Podcap: Cavs 140, Wolves 138 in OT (or, How You Remind Me)
2018-02-08https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/episode-159-or-how-you-remind-me
After reaching the lowest depths of doubt, denial and depression Tuesday in Orlando, the Cavs returned home and played possibly the game of the season in reminding us how good they can be when they try. There were contributions up and down the lineup in this unbelievable overtime shootout thriller with the Timberwolves, that saw both teams combine for an NBA record 40 (!!!) three pointers. LeBron James also reminded us of just how great he is… notching yet another triple double with 37 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds… the last few of which vaulted him past Zydrunas Ilgauskas and made him the all time franchise leader in all three categories. Yet, he saved his best for last… draining a turnaround jumper over Jimmy Butler as the final buzzer sounded. It was arguably his greatest game winning shot in a regular season game during the LeBron 2.0 era.

It was great to see LeBron smile again. It was also great to see the Cavs free Cedi Osman from the bench, as he came up with some terrific and much needed hustle and defensive ability. But, did it change the narrative going forward? Will it be a turning point in the season when we look back? Does it alter what the Cavs do in the next 12 hours or so with the trade deadline looming? To try and answer some of these questions, as well as thoroughly break down this dramatic and genuinely enjoyable victory, Nate, Tom and EG piled into the booth to chop it up.
And, if you’re wondering about the subtitle of this podcap… well, you’ll hear the inspiration for it pretty quickly as you tune in. As always, you can listen above, on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play.
Enjoy, and GO CAVS!
Just making sure…Cavs are keeping Cedi?

What?

WTF?
Heck, I forgot about Wade. This makes no sense at all.
I have no idea how they pulled those four guys out for the guys we gave up. That is pretty nuts. I could have seen us getting Hill and maybe clarskon, but not Hood, and Anance as well for the pieces we gave up. Cavs dan going all in in terms of contracts. Clearly wants to prove he is still committed to LBJ. Kudos. I think they just turned our season around. We are certainly more setup to defend and play gs now.
Love Cavs Dan!!
I am pleased. This is good news.
I will credit Dan and Corby for this…who knows how it will play out, but they needed this sort of transformation. Got rid of a lot of trash.

They got George Hill too!?
Yes, Hill in place of IT…what a difference.
Need another Pod tonight…
This team makes more sens on paper…what they had just made no sense…
Hell yes.

That outgoing dumptruck is glorious to see outside of Frye…
holy sh*t! We’re getting Hill and Hood? Is this real? My head is spinning.
I will be excited to see this team…
DAN AND KORBY!!!

Damn. So we get Hood & Hill for Rose & Crowder? That is stealing.
HOOD AND HILL!!!
CAVS!!!
WE GOT A WHOLE NEW BACK COURT!!!
WOW!!
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/961660720642445312
Thank god…Hill for IT has to be worth 32 wins alone…
Woahh!! This is insane value. Holy cow. Nance, Hood, and Hill for IT, Frye, Crowder, Rose and a first?!! That is a pretty darn good haul in my opinion.
Oh…. My…. God………. Is this for real??
For Crowder and DROsee!
FORMER MVP DERRICK ROSE??

Hmm.
Wtf?!! That would be awesome, for the right price! Who could they have fleeced Utah into taking?
Oh no, probably cedi. Hope not, but no idea what other pieces, other than TT they could send out.
This is important…

Yes, he’ll have more open catch-and-shoots with LeBron.

Sucks that Frye is gone but no way they were getting a deal done without including him. I like the deal. I’m excited to see Nance. Clarkson has some shooting struggles at times but I don’t get why everyone is down on him. The few times I have seen him play I have liked what I saw. These additions and some extra PT for Cedi could make for some fun games.

God, IT is gonna look so great in the Purple and Gold…

I’ll be really interested on who backs up the Brinks truck for IT this offseason…maybe Danny Ainge will do it.
Lakers are gonna tank with IT. They don’t want Boston to get their pick! ???
They won’t win another game if they play IT 30 minutes a night…
They’ll get a version of it next year if they don’t this year.
Bottom line… even if this helps the Lakers pursue LeBron… at least we won’t have the option for Dan to overpay to keep IT if LBJ leaves…
I am psyched for Nance.
I do not think this deal helps us much this year. Neither Nance or Clarkson can shoot. Nance isn’t a C. And his most likely spot in the rotation is Green’s spot. Clarkson, JR, Bron, Crowder/Nance, TT is gonna struggle. And we gave up a first needlessly.
However, agree 100% that this is an appease Bron deal. We got younger. Green may leave next year and Nance is good insurance.
And we could field some interesting lineups with everyone 6’5 to 6’9: Bron, JR, Korver, Green, Nance, Cedi. Perhaps Crowder. Love at C when he gets back.

Kudos to Dan!
Looks like cavs dan hasn’t given up, which is good.

????? Now he knows he we feel!!!!
LMAO
They kept the Brooklyn pick which is the true value for the cavs while getting rid of IT, and getting a pretty good young player in return, and a point guard who is an instant upgrade over IT and Rose. Frye was the only valuable contract they could send out and was likely going in any trade that got rid of IT and got anything of value back, which the cavs did. You could argue that to pawn off IT as an expiring since his contract is so small and since he is so awful you would need to sweeten… Read more »
My first glance as a fan is I can’t quite grip what this means in which side made out here. My second thought, is NO NOT CHANNING FRYE!! I just love this guy. And yeah I’m more upset he is gone than a trouble maker wobbled IT. Geez, how bad is it we still can’t get rid of Shump for box of fruity pepples. I plan to stay on CTB to be educated on the upside of this. I thank you ahead of time to enlighten me.

One of my all time favorite Cavs!
Dude’s a great guy.
LOL… “Don’t go 0-6 or they will trade your ass…”
I wish we could buy him back! He is loved that much here. Put him in our Hall of Fame of favorites next to Delly and Jefferson too.
That would be a coup if the lakers bought him out. Too bad they seem intent on keeping him.
Wish every pro athlete could be like Channing. Sports would be so fun.
I like this trade. I was hoping we could keep our first but that’s ok if it is going to be in the 20s.
So, the Kyrie trade plus our first and Channing essentially has been the Brooklyn pick, Crowder and the two Lakers. That’s not too bad. Also, we get younger and we have two good contracts for a change. Now, if we can offload Shump and TT that would be a great deadline.
I think the Cavs will be watchable again!!!
Just getting rid of IT is pretty rad!
Solid trade – they got younger and still have BKN pick which can’t be moved now. Think Clarkson and Nance JR going from lottery to contender and playing with Lebron will be big factor, young guys will take advantage of that opportunity. See what else may transpire….
I kind of like the deal. I’m glad we got rid of IT. Sad to see Frye go. Never thought Dan would cut his losses with IT. Cheers Dan!
For once… I agree with something Jeremiahs said…
https://twitter.com/JerryEngelmann/status/961654459892948992
I hope Nance as “one of the best contracts in the league” is better than that other player with “one of the best contracts in the league” from Boston. And I do think Nance will not be a bust like Crowder has been so far.
I don’t think the cavs had any chance of retaining James if IT stayed. Their season and chance to get to the finals would be over.
Truth
IT was never going to get better physically out there & then you got that crappy attitude on top of that.
https://twitter.com/JerryEngelmann/status/961654459892948992
He is an instant upgrade over tt if he can stay healthy.
I can’t contain how excited I am by this…
https://twitter.com/YahooSportsNBA/status/961654617023987712
Yeah, that’s pretty cool. And Larry Sr. still lives in the area, doesn’t he?
Yes
yeah he does corporate events all the time – met him a few times in the boxes
LOL
https://twitter.com/WayneEmbrysKids/status/961652686981685250
Ohhhh That’s Right!!! Awesome!!
Any chance Cavs have another deal in them? Shump and TT and a second for Walker?
lol why would the Hornets do that?
I know there is no chance of that deal happening…
Hornets not taking anything less than Nets pick for Kemba… (not available now without another first coming back) and even then it probably wouldn’t have been enough.
Could still trade picks with hornets
Obviously they wouldn’t lol but what’s another deal we could make? Hill for JR and Shump? lol
YESSSSSS

totally disagree on altered carbon…first three episodes were fantastic. Then went to complete and utter shit. What was that 30 minute random cop drama thrown in there. Should have been 6 episodes and taken their time developing the plot. It was rushed and shallow after an incredible initial set up.
Was true to the books… which I loved… to each their own…
There was so much good to it, it set my expectations so high up front. The visuals were great, had many interesting technology takes (still trying to figure out how Poe worked). Loved Poe, and the incredible sneaky odd job-esque assassin, meths were vile people, the idea of an envoy was very intriguing. The plot just became a mess, because I think they tried to fit it all into the season. Happy you enjoyed it though, and reflected the books.
It was kind of a mess in parts, but I enjoyed it.

Lol…now THAT’s funny…

Windy calling it a home run… for the Lakers
I think both sides can win in this one. We aren’t trying to open cap space for next year but the Lakers are. The Lakers don’t care that IT is a cancer and the worst player in the NBA, but we do. Our first rounder should really be in the 26+ range, assuming the recent skid had a lot to do with players forcing the front office’s hand to trade IT. I’m not worried about losing a late first round pick.
Sneaky conspiracy theory… by helping the Lakers clear cap space, Gilbert paves the way for LeBron to leave to Lakers this summer if they can also get PG-13… but, he brings in helpful players and gets rid of IT (won’t be tempted to back up Brinks truck this summer), and looks like less of a bad guy in the LeBron drama… So, banking on LBJ to stay, but also keeps the Nets pick if he leaves…
Why are people down on the lakers trade? The only bad part is giving up Frye, which isn’t good obviously. You are getting rid of IT which solves a ton of problems and getting back Nance who will be an upgrade over TT in my opinion. Clark son is ok, but he will likely be better at running the offense than Rose and certainly better on d than IT. The cavs first may be overkill, but at least they didn’t use the bkn pick to go for Walker or Jordan, two non-starter in my opinion.
Also getting rid of Shump’s contract (in exchange for the future money on the young guys) is a big plus. Shump provided zilch.
I’m dumb, nevermind the Shump comment.
Cavs needed to make the Lakers take trash like Shump…instead, they moved a helpful player in Frye…
The thinking goes:
We helped the Lakers out by taking on long term salary while they get two expirings & Bird rights to the most accomplished player in the trade.
And we gave them a first round pick to do it.
Who is the most accomplished player? IT is donezo.
Frye was going out in any trade. Only value in the Hill, or this trade. You can’t expect a team to take awful contracts or awful players without sending something in return.
So send them a second rather than the first. Lakers were desperate to clear Clarkson’s salary…
If Clarkson and Nance help Cavs get back on track and to the Finals… the first rounder will essentially be a second rounder…
Also to me, subtracting IT is almost as valuable as getting Hill. Either way, Frye would have been gone. So it comes down to getting rid of IT which is huuuuge while getting back an upgrade over TT and an upgrade over Rose, versus getting Hill while having to keep IT and another piece.
Giving up the first was a huge overpay
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/961649269609508864
I guess my question is whether you think the cavs had any chance of going to the finals while keeping IT? I don’t. And if they don’t go to the finals, I think there is no way James resigns.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/961651399590318080
Sucks we lose Channing. We didn’t get any shooting. I do like Nance Jr (should have drafted him) and Clarkson is a serviceable rotation guy who is overpaid.
We did get younger.
Any chance Frye gets bought out?
According to Ramona, they’re keeping both IT and Frye…
I think I like this trade… Cavs HAD to get rid of IT, and they instantly get younger and more athletic with Nance and Clarkson… Will miss Channing, and wish it didn’t take Cavs first rounder… but still a net positive as long as LeBron stays…
Wondering if there is any chance LeBron stays? If any of the rumors are true the he and Gilbert have a poisonous relationship, I don’t have a good feeling about him staying.
I like the trade though. IT gone is huge. Not sure how we can nab anyone else meaningful, though (e.g., George Hill), which would have been great.
I wish they had either kept Frye or the pick…Lakers needed to suck up Shump or JR contract in this…
I think I am with you.
As much as I loved Frye, Lue would not play him vs GSW. IT is unfortunately addition by subtraction & Bron clearly hated him.
So: Kyrie & Frye & our 2018 first for Clarkson, Nance, Crowder, Zizic, & the Nets 2018 first.
At least we cut our losses.
LOL

Thoughts on Clarkson? Solid PG who can’t shoot that great? How is his defense?
Mediocre at everything, honestly.
Per Woj – Frye, IT, and our pick for Larry Nance Jr, Jordan Clarkson ?? Hmm…
