Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors, Game 1 (#TryTryAgain)
2018-05-01The Toronto Raptors did not succeed against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 playoffs, losing in six games… so they tried again in the 2017 playoffs… and got swept. 2018 brings another year, and another opportunity to try, try again. Only, this matchup should be different because neither of these teams is really the same as they once were.
The team from the North may still have many recognizable names from their past two iterations, led by an All-Star back court tandem of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, and featuring big men Jonas Valanciunas and Serge Ibaka in their starting five. However, the difference isn’t only in their overhauled bench unit, but also in their overall philosophy of play as a team under head coach Dwayne Casey. The Raps have mostly transformed themselves away from an ISO heavy reliance on their star guards, and have embraced a balanced inside-out attack. They have real gunners on the perimeter, including CJ Miles, Fred VanVleet and Delon Wright, in addition to the already dangerous Lowry. Even DeRozan spent last summer focusing on his three ball with a decent degree of success. Add some length and energy in the form of Pascal Siakam and Jacob Poeltl, and there’s a demonstrable reason why Toronto finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Which leads to another thing that’s different… this being the first time the Raptors have home court advantage over the Cavaliers. That’s because the wine & gold limp across the border, battered and bruised from a roller-coaster season that landed them in the four seed, and led to a harrowingly physical series against the upstart Indiana Pacers. Injuries, roster upheaval and role uncertainty have all plagued the Cavs, requiring LeBron James to put forth a near superhuman effort to carry the team much sooner in these playoffs than anyone expected. Without some timely help here and there from the few veterans populating the Cleveland roster, the Raptors could have very well not even had the opportunity to try and redeem themselves against their biggest stumbling block to the NBA Finals.
So, all should be set up well for Toronto, right? They’ve got LeBron and the Cavs right where they want them, no? And, they’ll have all the fans in The Six screaming for possibly four home games, eh?
Yeah, not so fast. There’s a reason Canadians don’t typically have a high degree of confidence in these Raptors. Because when the pressure is on, they aren’t always the most mentally tough team. Sure, they finally exorcised the demons of playoff Game 1s in the first round against the Wizards (they had lost 10 straight Game 1s before that), but they also still seem to be at their shakiest when playing Cleveland. Even with this new, reconstituted squad, they went just 1-2 against the Cavs in the regular season… with the only win coming during that dark period when Isaiah Thomas started for Cleveland. They lost one of the signature games of the season (for the Cavs anyway) 132-129, when LeBron, missing five teammates and his head coach, scored 35 points with 17 assists and zero turnovers to overcome a 79 point half by the Raptors. During the second half of that game, Toronto reverted back to their old ISO ways as the Cavs applied pressure, and there’s no question Cleveland will look to do that once again.
No word yet on which starting five Ty Lue will incorporate in Game 1… although it does sound like George Hill’s back will allow him to suit up and be available…
Ty Lue wouldn't reveal his starting lineup for Game 1. Tristan Thompson was a hero in Game 7, but Jeff Green was very effective against the Raps in the Cavs' two regular season wins against them when they went small. Lue also said George Hill's back is "good" to go.

One thing for sure, however, if the Cavs hope to maintain their dominance over the Raptors, they will once again need some heroics from LeBron James, as well as solid contributions from their veterans. It would be a bonus to see one of their young guys (Hood, Clarkson, Nance Jr.) have a good series, but if the Cavs can defend the way they did against the Pacers (for most of the first round), they should have at least a decent chance to get back to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Sticking with my non-predictions for the playoffs, but I do think there’s a good possibility the Cavs can steal Game 1, especially if they can put the requisite pressure on the Raps.
Catch all the action on TNT starting at 8pm EST… and, as always, chime in below…
GO CAVS!
Looks like our badmouthing them is inspiring them to play better!! Let’s keep it up.
Jeff making me three-sick…
nononoyes
Bron just 1-5 on FTs…
Bron channeling De’Andre Jordan at the line.
Jesus Lue, put Nance in so Green is not on JV.
VanVleet like
lol
Weird call on van fleet. LBJ fts not great tonight
Should have been a no call or foul on Bron, looked like…that will get the ref truthers going amongst Rap fans…
If James made the freebies and Cavs got anything from Love, this game is even
Jeff! Green machine!
Cavs are so fortunate they’re down by single digits. Toronto can’t let this happen.
Who you rooting for?
Let’s get this down to 6 before half.
Eff that, house these punks.
YES!
Big three by jr
Yeah… come at the King VanVleet… LOL
Good charge taken by green. Saved a layup
PIPE!
Can’t leave Van fleet open like that. Way too much space
Lowry always has bedhead…
REVERSE JAM!!
Reverse jam!
Green playing well. JC not too bad.
Bad foul on Demar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HktV2yGtLv8
Derozan dumb foul!
Cans in bonus the rest of the way
i like resting zz and cedi – gotta save them. for the finals
Same old, Lebron efficient, rest of team shoots 25-30%…
Offense does do them a ton of favors.
Doesn’t
Let’s make a run here.
Even considering the injury Love’s drop off in production is really just hard to fathom. He hit several threes in game seven, but passed on a wide open one tonight. I hope his confidence isn’t totally shot
Without a fundamental change, we don’t seem to have any chance in this series.
Cavs getting outrebounded, out-assisted, and trash shooting from the field.
I always suspected that having KLove as the second option wouldn’t be the same as KI as the second option but he is totally broken right now. No confidence at all.
I think his thumb is seriously bothering him in gathering the ball.
Man if someone else could get going. Maybe Clarkson. Cavs hanging around though.
Love looks old and slow….Jeff Green can’t guard anyone…but lets sit Zicic and Cedi while Raptors are playing practically everyone…come on Lue open up that rotation….not gonna kill ya bud!
JC doing work.
I know it’s unlikely but I’m hoping Cavs can stay in touch into the 4th. I forget who, but some NBA writer was talking about the crowd in Toronto & how they go from loud & excited to quiet & fearful if the Raptors start coughing up a good lead, “here we go again”, Casey starts calling timeouts too quick etc. LBJ can make them panic like no other. Fingers crossed.
Vleet would be starting for the Cavs…
Has Kevin sat?
Yes.
I don’t think so?
He sat for a while early in the 1st…
Think I was buttering my toast – breakfast time here. Thanks for the inspiration, EG!
At 6 minutes in the first. Sat and TT came in. Didn’t help.
Couple of awful threes there…
If Love could make a layup and Bron had made his FTs, we’d have the lead.
If my Aunt had balls she’d be my Uncle.
Poetl is pronounced like purtle. Didn’t know that. I like Poetls.
Jc! Great reverse
Maybe this will get Clarkson going?
Nice sequence by JC and Hood…
Well… so much for LBJ’s FT%
KLove’s missed layups plus LeBron’s missed free throws and the Cavs should be down by just 4 pts maybe.
Way to pick up morels on poeltle, lebron
Fouls
If Miles is gonna hit those…

😂😂😂😂😂
Bron got away with a walk
Kev gotta be stronger around the basket
Love is a broken man. Gonna need to see his therapist after this game.
Hoping the plan is leave him out there & play himself back into form eventually. Not many options.
love·less
[ˈləvləs]
ADJECTIVE
having no feelings of love.
“I was trapped in a loveless marriage and there was no way out”
synonyms: passionless · unloving · unfeeling · heartless · undemonstrative · unresponsive · cold · cold-hearted · icy · frigid
k love is just terrible…
How many easy layups is Kev gonna miss??
Gum Drop Bear.
And he was a solid 20/10 guy until IT came back. He has missed bunnies with his good hand too
He has really small hands. Don’t think he can palm it, so if his thumb is bothering him, it will affect him more than other guys in all likelihood.
At least 3.
Finish, kev!
This is kind of the way Lue used to use LBJ… take him out with a few minutes left in the first and then let him lead the second unit to start the second…
Cedi > Hood.
No Nance yet.
Fall of my chair if Cedi gets non-garbage minutes.
Love is playing like Gum Drop Bear the last two weeks. Wish I was joking.
Silly Hood foul.
I miss Channing.
Sad when Hood can’t hit a wide open corner three…
Clarkson scratches!
Clarkson… finally
Clarkson finally….
Can’t wait to hear Ty’s pearls of wisdom… lol
The NBA must be covering their eyes. The thought of Toronto in the Finals is not music to their ears.
33 points allowed, I don’t believe the Raptors can defend like the Pacers do but they will definitely put more points than the Pacers.
If the Cavs bench and KLove don’t contribute enough the Raptors could win this series in 5 or 6 games.
Love shouldn’t play this game , play nance at least u get defense
Not sure about Love, but I think I’m having a panic attack.
Clarkson, Hood, TT, and Green…reminds me of the Showtime Lakers. Who the hell thought that was a great idea? Did that lineup score a single point?
Love continues to be trash
We need Cedi.
crisp defense
You forgot the “y” at the end of crisp…
