Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Celtics, Game 5 (#BestofThree)
2018-05-23I was tempted to make George Hill the poster child of this Live Thread… mainly because his number is “3” and because when he plays well, he brings out the best in the Cavs. However, since Mike covered G Hill’s effect on the Cavs in depth last week, I settled on a shot of the other crucially important matchup in this deadlocked Conference Finals. Kyle Korver is 16 years older than Jaylen Brown, but he’s been able to match the young Celtic’s energy and hustle over the last two games. Even though Brown wound up leading Boston in scoring (25 points) in Game 4, it took him an inefficient 23 shots to get there. Three of those were blocked by the craftily defensive Korver, who I always forget has good size at 6-7 (kind of like how Ty Lue forgets how old Kyle is).
Now that both teams have held serve at home, the series has effectively been shrunk to a “best of three” scenario… which you no doubt learned on Monday night when it was literally the most used quote by the President Genius Celtics hive mind in the post game pressers. Boston would presumably hold the advantage given that two of the three will be played in the always loud and annoying TD Garden… a place where they boast a 9-0 record in these playoffs. However, it’s never all that wise to bet against LeBron James winning at least one road game in a playoff series… in fact, outside of last year’s Finals, James has won a road playoff game in the other 32 previous series. He is unfortunately 0-3 on the road in Game 5s against the Celtics in his playoff career though, so he’ll look to change that tonight.
For the Cavs to put the first post season blemish on Boston’s home court record, their role players will have to exert even more of the hustle and intensity they put on display during the last two games in Cleveland. It will take more stifling defense, more teeth-rattling screens and more Kyle Korver blocks and floor burns. It will also probably take more threes from all of the Cavs’ gunners. They went just 8-23 from deep in Game 4, but still won by nine. A few more of those go in, and the game is likely not in doubt past the end of the third quarter. Korver went 2-5 from downtown and Brown wound up 2-6. Something tells me whoever can win that particular battle will make the difference tonight.
The rumblings are that President Stevens might switch things up in his starting contingency, and that he might go more defensive early with either Aaron Baynes or Marcus Smart (or both) to begin. Hard to say for sure, since Brad is keeping things close to the vest…
Brad Stevens says he doesn’t reveal lineups at media avail—as opposed to recent years, when he did—because he didn’t know he didn’t have to until before shortly before tip-off.

Ty Lue, on the other hand, will likely stay with what’s been working the last few games with Tristan Thompson in the starting lineup along with LeBron, Kevin Love, George Hill and JR Smith. We’ll see if any adjustments made by the President will force more tinkering by Ty.
Sticking to my non-predictions of playoff games, but I will say that I believe the Cavs will win once in Boston… either tonight or Game 7.
Catch all the action starting at 8:30pm EST on ESPN… and, as always, chime in below with your thoughts…
We’re about 10 minutes away from garbage time. Put em on the plane and rest up for game 6 and 7.
If Nance gets a Tech, so should Rozier…
i guess cavs don’t want to win this game… Bron still doesn’t want to go to Finals and get killed…
Love the fight. Don’t take it from that b***h
I know LeBron is trying to save some energy but he needs to attack now.
Morris, Nance, & Smart should all get techs.
Morris taunting again. Second time he should have had a T for taunting in this series.
Nice Nance. Don’t take that ****
Morris brothers are absolute trash
Finally Nance shows some heart!!! ABOUT DAMN TIME SOMEONE STEPS UP
This has to be on purpose. HAS TO. How do you explain the complete lack of intensity, running sets, having picks set
Good for Larry!
F u, Morris
Morris just freaking body checked him out of bounds.
Finally some fight! Should have been a foul call
This team is playing like a**. Not trusting the offense. Not trusting the defense.
Bron, Clarkson, Korver, Green, Nance.
Too many jumpers. Too soft.
Gonna be down 20 in a minute.
God, Jeff Green sucks…please get him off the court…
Hill just goes into offensive shell… amazing…
He did the same thing in Indy v Miami.
Absolutely no movement on offense. No one is trying to drive the ball.
Clankson
Doris: Ty, Jeff Green has brought you nothing, why are you playing him??
I don’t see how we win tonight with the lack of intensity we are showing.
Love 10, Bron 8, TT 1. Zero for Hill & JR.
If I told you before the game that Hill, JR, Green, Nance and TT would share time together on the court, you would guess that we’d be down 13 at the end of the first quarter.
Love got 2 fouls. Who else do you bring in for him but tt?
Cedi Osman, Kyle Korver, hell, Zizic.
Here’s the thing, TT and Nance is already playing with fire. Throw Green in and its a dumpster fire. Now add to it that neither Lebron or Love are on the floor.
I get that Love had two fouls, but you’re going to get killed with that lineup. May as well roll the dice with Love fouling out.
Lol
Cavs ain’t winning this one if the Celtics are allowed to grab and hold while calling fouls on Cavs on minor contacts. Lue needs to get a tech to turn the tides of officiating.
If I’m. Lue, I’m screaming at Hill to look for his own shot. They’re not respecting him at all.
Yup… he’s taken one shot… not gonna cut it.
Five pretty ugly turnovers vs one for Boston. And that was supposed to be a point of emphasis. And awful officiating
Worst start one can imagine….lack of aggression is telling…hill and J.R. back to being stupid…nance looks clueless
Gonna take some intestinal fortitude to get back into this… more than what Green, JR and Hill have shown thus far…
Absolutely no aggression from the Cavs…. on top of getting no calls…. could be over early tonight.
another stupid lineups….. Lue at his best on the road…. moron
Definitely not the right way to begin the game.
Jesus. Freaking Lue. Freaking refs.
Get Jeff Green the hell out of there, Lue…
WTF is Lue doing. Seriously. That line up was criminal.
Again: 2 on Love, resting Bron til end of first. Yeesh. It was only for a minute.
Down 13. Ugh.
I could see that Brown play coming from a mile away… why can’t the Cavs?
Bird’s eye view helps but yeah they arent even a little locked in
stupid stupid stupid
Terrible lineup…. where’s Korver???
So Thompson Green Nance Smith and Hill lineup. I can’t wait to hear the justification for that idea. No Love or Lebron and three guys who can only score around the rim.
2 on Love. Bron resting until end of quarter.
Refs just have to be held accountable for that garbage
5 TOs. This is not going well.
Someone told the Cavs this was the third quarter
These refs make me pine for Tony Brothers…
Jesus. Get the ball to Nance. This is awful offense. George Hill has to take over in those possessions.
+1 on Hill. Invisible
JR and Jeff Green, a match made in Hell…
Love the only bright spot & he has two fouls.
Quite a reel of “not a foul” fouls on Love this series.
Love gets the most awful calls of almost anyone. BS
Cheap foul, what else is new…
Two absolute horse crap fouls on love. Unreal.
Well boys… the fix is apparently in…
Hilariously poor decision making all around the team. Use their aggression against them
THAT’S NOT A FOUL JESUS!
Not the right intensity defensively from the Cavs.
If LeBron rolls instead of posting, that’s a layup
Green in for Lebron in the middle of a celtics run. This should go well.
Nice shot Kev!
They’re not calling anything for the Cavs…. Horford illegal screen on that 3 pointer.
Floodgates. TOs. Lucky Horford missed.
Green for Bron.
So sloppy so far, Awful passes by Nance and Hill
As usual, Boston scrubs hit almost every three at home…
Need Korver in there…
So many travels…
These TT/Nance post ups are pissing me off.
Mayday. 15-3 run.
I forget – are Game 5’s feel out games for us?
Cavs not taking care of the ball…
These refs…barf
LeBron is playing poorly so Lue leaves him in longer tonight
