From Distance: Vlogging Kawhi to the Clippers
2019-07-06four point play….
1. I wanted to wait for Leonard’s decision before From Distancing it up this week. Boy, am I glad I did.
2. The Clippers got the job done late last night, signing Kawhi Leonard and acquiring Paul George via trade.
Wow.
3. I give my initial reactions to the NBA landscape altering event in this week’s Vlog.
4. What do you think? If you had to rank the fortunes of the teams involved, who would you have on top?
https://twitter.com/BR_NBA/status/1149712816674430977?s=20
If you can’t see IT, it’s because he only goes up to Tacko Falls ankles.
Color me skeptical on the Kyrie/KD and Harden/Russ things working out.
Much more optimistic on LBJ/AD & Kawhi/PG13. Though for the Clips, those guys do play the same spot. One guy is either going to have to guard SGs or PFs.
Yeah I would agree with you there.
Wings are interchangeable. SF/SG doesn’t really matter much anymore as long as you have guys 6’6″ to 6’9″ at both spots. Which they have. PF and center distinction barely matters save for against the very few guys like Embiid out there. Having two mobile, 6’6″+ sized, strong wings switching multiple positions makes positional difference between SG/SF irrelevant. I will say what matters most for differentiation between player roles in guys 6’6″ to 6’10” in today’s nba are mobility, shooting ability, and ball handling. Guys that are slower or can’t shoot and handle are more in line with interior roles. So… Read more »
The League seems so much more balanced when it’s a bunch of Big Twos running around rather than Big Threes. Really excited to see how all of these pairings turn out.
According to spotrac, 4 teams are in the tax with us at the moment: Miami, OKC, GSW & Portland. Don’t know it cap holds are a factor or not.
Seems like those are the likely JR destinations.
OKC = Robertson ($10 mil expiring). Moving him & waiving JR would get them under.
Miami: J. Johnson ($15 mil + PO), Olynyk ($12 + PO), Dion ($12 for 2), Leonard ($11 exp) seem decent fits.
We’d need assets there.
I don’t think OKC is any longer. But Houston may now be.
Too bad the Knicks signed all those Power Forwards, they could’ve taken Westbrook.
And waste a roster spot on a non Power Forward?? Silly.
What was I thinking?
https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1149650443020058629?s=20
There is a weird scenario where if okc were to use every single first rounder from next year until 2023 and Miami was a playoff team the previous season they could have 8 guys on 1st round rookie contracts to start the 2023-2024 season. Don’t think it would be a good idea, but it would be a fascinating scenario in a comical way.
Alternative: Cavs trade for Wiggins and get 12 picks (4 of them firsts)
http://tradenba.com/trades/SkDIiFH-r
I’m feeling inspired by all this pick hoarding…
In this trade:
Cavs get: John Wall, plus 9 picks (3 firsts, and 6 seconds)
Wiz get: TT and JR
http://tradenba.com/trades/SJr8OtSbB
Then because MJ is cheap:
Cavs get: Batum, Bridges, and a top 5 protected 2020 first from Hornets
Hornets get: Clarkson, and Knight (both expiring)

CP3 for John Wall and 15 first round Wizard picks!
It would be nice if the Cavs could get the type of return OKC and NO have had. They got just one pick for Kyrie! Granted it was a lottery pick, which it is unlikely to be for OKC (with those Houston picks).
Both those teams were in perfect situations with desperate teams on the other end. Okc was in that situation twice. Perfect storm of absurd leverage. 2026 houston is 1-4 protected. Still could be a decent pick unless houston wins in the lottery.
I expect they’ll use some of the picks to move up in multiple drafts anyway.
Chris Paul for Johnson and Dragic works. If I’m OKC I wouldn’t give up picks for that trade. I’m sure Miami will push for at least one pick.
Maybe. Depends how much Riles wants to try to win now. They might even settle for multiple seconds. Which if you’re Okc why would you care considering how many firsts you have.
Yeah I just generally hate the Heat and want them to lose every trade.
Oh me too. Don’t really expect more than a second going to Miami, if that.

Yeah I came up with about 6 trades in a post awaiting moderation that don’t involve picks, just salary matching to teams that might want Paul for the next two years if they literally have to give up nothing but an expiring and other less bad longer term contract. NO wins the offseason by rebuilding teams by virtue of lottery luck and savvy trades/drafting. But OKC is set to possibly rebuild quick as well. They have so many tradeable assets it is absurd. And they would still have picks to boot even if they traded for a star or moved… Read more »

OKC did exactly what they needed to do. CP3 probably could still go to a team that wants to win now for simple expirings or shorter contracts. I fully expect that to happen. There are a number of teams that might do that who could use pgs and who are under a time crunch either by having a star who is due for UFA in a few years or by their own desire to be competitive now. Additionally CP3 becomes the largest expring in the league after two years. http://tradenba.com/trades/S1GGpUrWr http://tradenba.com/trades/r1FGwCI1B http://tradenba.com/trades/S1fKPwS-H http://tradenba.com/trades/BJdOuDBZS http://tradenba.com/trades/BJGQuaLJB Just replace houston with OKC. Minny (multiple deals involving just salary matching) or Miami. But who knows maybe other teams might be interested who are borderline playoff teams, Orlando, Detroit, etc.
If Miami wants to win now, which seems to be the case I expect Paul for Dragic and Johnson in January. Straight up. No picks on either side. Miami wanted RWB without giving up much. Now they could just get Paul to help them be the mediocre selves they would have been with russ and butler, except they only give up an expiring and a not great contract.

https://twitter.com/WorldWideWob/status/1149488118396932097?s=20
I wonder if OKC will flip Paul to Miami? They could just swap for cap relief, since they’ve already got picks.
All of OKC acquired picks are gonna be late firsts. LAC. HOU. And Denver are all gonna be pretty good for a while.
Definitely the next few years but they have picks until like 2026
Those picks have major trade value when packaged. Key are the later ones. Also who knows what Kawhi and PG do after two years. Could see them moving on again. Maybe they age quick. Who knows. Houston is going to be not great in 2024 or 2026 in all likelihood.
Fully expect the thunder to move way up in the draft over the next few years. Or trade for another star. They have picks to spare.
I hope Chris Paul poisons The well in OKC, so Presti has to use multiple picks to get rid of him.
Like effing fire.
He’s following the Carmelo Anthony path to retirement… get traded to OKC, play mediocre at best for a year and then basically be out of the league the year after because nobody wants him

Yeah I think Morey was lying thru his teeth when he said the relationship between CP and Harden was fine. Clearly it was unsalvageable, otherwise why would Houston make this trade and give up picks? Maybe in 3 years Durant can join them in Houston?
I’m sure Harden being fed up played a part in the trade…at least he’s played with RWB before…

That deal is so goofy. I don’t know wtf okc is thinking.
Just wait till they rob the Knicks in December…
I like it for OKC.

Jesus… 8 new first rounders.
I am happy for them. They are setup to be restocked in perpetuity or make big trades……Beal. I mean they have stocked more assets than any team in history for guys who couldn’t get them past the first round, one of whom who has a bad contract. Basically they swapped one bad contract for another and they got a haul for that swap. Absurd.
I predict CP3 will be there only til January.
Hard to believe the CP3 contract was considered that much more toxic than Russ’s. But sounds like Harden and CP3 were ready to kill each other, so maybe Morey just decided he had to go. May be a good place for Russ, at least Houston does have shooting. He’ll have to let Harden do his thing, though.
I can’t imagine that Chris Paul wants to stay in OKC, but how will they unload that contract?
K. N. I. C. K. S.
He’ll have to wait until January. Then OKC can trade for 15 of the 80 PFs the Knicks stockpiled.
Knicks or Minny for cheap. OKC already got literally every pick. I might even take on Wiggins plus teague for a single first rounder. CP3 goes to try to help Minny win now. He actually probably works ok with that team, if healthy.
Now how can the Cavs get some of those OKC draft picks?
https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1149476838227337223?s=20
Wow. What an awful trade for the thunder.
I don’t think it’s that bad. They weren’t going anywhere with Russ, and they picked up 2 more firsts. I think it’s a bad deal for Houston IMO.
Huh? CP3 isn’t going to be there long. He’ll be traded. Cheap. Probably for expirings to another contender or borderline contender. Minny could be possible. Teague, Dieng and filler. No picks. Minny gets their PG to make a run with towns over the next couple years.
OKC literally has all the picks to trade for younger players or move up in the draft. I mean how many picks do they have now? 10, including their own? Plus like five swaps? That is insane.

Woj bomb. The NBA is crazy.
Apparently the Rockets are still lingering on a Russ trade. Per Windy they would trade CP3. “ESPN’s Brian Windhorst (video link) hears that Houston is attempting to slip into negotiations with the Oklahoma City, focusing on the possibility of a three-team trade. It’s unclear which players the Rockets would offer up in such a scenario, though I’d speculate sending Chris Paul elsewhere is the angle.” https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2019/07/latest-on-russell-westbrook-thunder-2.html?fv-home=true&post-id=134063 My trade proposal to bring CP3 home: Hornets get: Chris Paul Rockets get: Westbrook and JR Cavs get: Miles Bridges, Marvin Williams, and a top ten protected 1st rounder from Charlotte (2021) OKC gets:… Read more »
Nice, but Hornets are probably not quite that incompetent…or maybe they are, but they are also too cheap for that…
I wonder what the market is for Russ? If it is really soft, I wonder if we get involved? I do not like him as a player, but… Heard OKC asking for Bam & Herro from Miami. Miami wanting to keep both. If it is all gonna be salary relief + a guy you flip for more assets (Dragic) we could get involved, especially if we take Adams as well. Cavs get: Russ ($38 mil) & Adams ($25 mil) = $64,349,179. OKC gets: TT ($18.5), JR ($15.6 really $4), Knight ($15.6), Clarkson ($13.4) = $63,300,380. Plus minor tweaks. No way… Read more »
Well it’s certainly better than Cam Reddish and Bol Bol!
Adams is a really nice player and still only 25. Huge upgrade over basically every center we’ve had for years. But as you said I can’t see OKC ever giving up Russ without some young players or picks coming back. Definitely not Adams. And I’d be surprised if we take anything back for JR even as a facilitator for Russ going somewhere else. Doubt we would get any assets worth that much savings. As of now we have the highest cap via sporttrac and are 12 mil over the tax. That may not factor in other team’s FA signings this… Read more »
I would agree. They’d probably want Garland and a pick at the minimum.
I also think Miami is willing to include Herro, from what I’d read. They just don’t want to include Herro, and Bam, and/or Winslow.
ESPN HAS A VERY GOOD ARTICLE ON THE GROWING CONCERNS OF –AAU BASKETBALL—–SOMETHING I HAVE DISCUSSED OVER THE YEARS AS A HIGH SCHOOL COACH
That was fascinating. The effect of heavy stress during musculoskeletal development makes sense. Bones and joints aren’t fully developed structurally since they are still growing. I think leg bones fuse/stop growing anywhere from like 14 to the early 20s in men. Remember someone telling me when I was around 14-15 that heavy lifting in the weight room and stress on my joints wasn’t a good idea at that age because my skeletal frame and joints were more vulnerable because I was still developing. Also logically, the earlier you put wear and tear you put on your body, the sooner it… Read more »
ARE THE CAVS DONE WITH SUMMER LEAGUE —–IF NOT WHEN DO THEY PLAY NEXT —THANKS !1

Just because of the Barrett discussion below…
https://twitter.com/MZavagno11/status/1149338884519710720
He hasn’t been good this SL, but in the grand scheme, it doesn’t mean anything. Just don’t let Knicks fans crow about how awesome he’s been in SL.
SOME PLAYERS ARE IMMEDIATE SUCCESES / FLOPS ( GUMMY BEAR ) ——-SOME TAKE 3 YRS TO DEVELOP -( AKA : ….” SMOKIN JOE )—AND SOME HAVE IMMEDIATE SUCCESS UNTIL THE SCOUTING REPORTS ATTACK THEIR WEAKNESSES …….TIME WILL TELL ……………………………..BIG WEEKEND SERIES FOR TRIBE / TWINS…..IF INDIANS FLOP IS THE SEASON OVER OR STILL PLENTY OF TIME TO RECOVER …………………THIS IS FROM A FAN WHO HAD THEM WRITTEN OFF SEVERAL WEEKS AGO/ GO TRIBE !!!
They’ll at least still be in the pack vyying for the wildcard spots. I wrote them off too. But their schedule has been crazy weak of late. They may fade again if they run into another rough stretch off schedule. Offense has picked up though.
It’s definitely nice to see them hitting again.
Chilling watching some spots on ytube.. looks like cavs dodged a bullet with RJ (can’t miss) Barrett.. so much for the group-think consensus.. who’dja rather have.. RJ #3 or nik-akex #17?? Watching RJ jack bricks suggests a “major malfunction”.. at least it is blowing up on the Knicks..
I was never that high on him, but it’s way too early to judge him.
Was never too high on him (as anyone can look up here), but yeah, it’s summer league. Give him a year or two in the NBA before saying anything much.
Bit early to judge. Barrett is a guy that will take a few years, just like all these one and dones who are expected to carry teams. Easier for guys like hayes to succeed when they just simply have to finish and block shots.
Give me a break guys.. if the Cavs had traded up to get Barrett you all would be apoplectic cardiac cases
I wouldn’t. I didn’t want them to trade up to get him, but he will probably suck his rookie year, like most other rookies, especially 18-19 year old rookies. What exactly were you expecting?
better
You know who absolutely sucked last year? Who had one of the worst rookie years in modern history? Who is now tearing it up in summer league? Kevin Knox. I don’t put much stock in summer league efficiency or overall performance. Knox probably still sucks. Some guys having good games probably suck. Some guys underperforming probably will be good players eventually. And IF Knox doesn’t suck, it pretty much proves a rookie could suck their rookie year and turn into a vastly different player. Barrett might suck this year and turn into a good to great player in three years.… Read more »
Nope. I am on the record as saying “take the double”, especially two doubles, rather than swing for the fences.
Heck, I am disappointed we did not take on more salary for JR and nab a pick in the teens and nab Clarke, Herro, Alexander-Walker, Washington, Okeke, or Kabengele.
His hips are too tight. I have never understood the excitement. His measured athleticism isn’t game applicable excepting some transition moments because of his lack of hip fluidity.
He will be a solid rotation player, but I have never seen star potential. I think Jalen Rose is about his ceiling, though I would be surprised if he were to reach Rose’s top level.
Yes, he is a bit stiff. That is true. Something I had concerns with watching him at duke. A more consistent j would help him a lot. He doesn’t have it right now and that stiffness may be exposed if guys sag off him.
Man buck, you stray a bit towards sensationalism. I’m certainly not all that high on Barrett and didn’t even want him as our pick, but it is way too early to declare pretty much anything as significant as Barrett having a “major malfunction” or proclaiming Alexander-Walker the second coming of the splash brothers.

Believe cavs had no interest in using MLE which would likely preclude Nwaba.
Not sure there’s enough money out there for Nwaba to get a bigger deal?
yeah, money’s pretty much gone. He could still get more from some teams depending on the exception contract, but options are starting to dwindle.
Very hopeful he just wants to come back.
I expect there are probably still some teams with MLEs.
Yeah, a MLE to a contender/near-contender would probably be a safe bet for Nwaba.

Who says that? He had an awful miss on being one of the major proponents in the Cavs FO for Bennett (Grant and DG I think were for someone else), but other than that he has had positive moves.
I think he was very average with Cavs. He mostly spent assets accumulated by Grant. He missed on Wiggins (everybody did but he passed on Embiid). The JR and Shump contracts were horrible. He had 3 head coaches in 3 years. I think he was good at reading the mood of his roster, which is obviously paramount with James. He’s getting tons of credit now but he got the first overall pick and a top 5 player to trade. I would certainly hope any GM would be able to turn that into something.
JR and Shump he had little choice with Lebron having a dagger to his neck (also, both of those players contributed to the Cavs championship). Exactly why you can’t evaluate his moves with the Cavs in a vacuum. He also surrounded Lebron with a team that made sense, which apparently is not so easy to do, looking at that ridiculous team the Lakers put together last year.
This is very true. It’s almost impossible to really build a team with GM Klutch Sports running the show.
They contributed to the championship before they signed those contracts. A good GM doesn’t pay for past performance. I think the one thing you can look at in a vacuum is completely whiffing on consecutive number one overall picks.
Yes but I think they were also trying to appease LeBron.
I think Griffin gets lionized by Cavs fans because he got stiffed by an unlikable and mostly incompetent owner.
There are worse owners: Sarver, Leonis, MJ, Dolan are all much worse. Not sure the Magic owner is all that competent either. Lakers are pretty bad too. Heat fanboys adore their organization, but the owner was a bit cheap during their LeBron years and pushed both LeBron and Wade to other teams. Not sure who owns the Pelicans but they’ve been a wasteland for years. Houston has a new owner who seems off his rocker. I forgot Sacramento. That guy has been pretty awful since he bought the team. Detroit has a new owner that picked up Blake Griffins contract.… Read more »
Don’t forget Minny’s owner who decided to sign Wiggins to that contract.
OKC’s owner is el cheap-o!
Agree that Dolan, Sarver, and Leonsis are worse. Ranadive has been pretty awful. I mean sure they have had some decent moves recently, but damn they were doing some baffling things in Sactown for a long time. Jeanie Buss has incompetently lucked out due to the city’s draw. That team may seriously regret the AD trade. MJ takes the cake though. Their drafts have been awful What have they been doing for ten years? What the hell were they doing with Kemba? But also we had zero options for getting replacements equal to their level of contribution in a win now situation. No choice as far as TT, JR, Shump. Lbj walks unless they run it back or improve the team. No choice for improvement.
I like Griffin and didn’t want to see him go, but I believe he wanted Anthony Bennett in that 2013 draft.
Anthony Bennett.
Hits and missess. JR/Shump trade was good. Overpaid for Mozgov. Let Delly walk. Korver trade was good. Love trade was good. No blame for doubling down on JR/TT. If KD doesn’t run to GSW, we win 2 more titles.

I wouldn’t read too much into a single summer league game. Especially when Windler is the only one of our picks playing and by all accounts he has had a target on him. I think it’s a good idea since it will be implemented only in timeout scenarios and since they will only have one per game. The slowdown/stoppage shouldn’t be more than a regular timeout which would likely be used anyway in close games.
Ideally could possibly help to eliminate at least one egregious call or non-call per game.
Figured he’d retire.

Now there is talk about Livingston taking a FO position in GS, which makes more sense, frankly…
If OKC wants cap relief, JR is their guy.
Keep Love. Make it happen Koby.
Miami may need it more than OKC.
https://twitter.com/Lefty_Leif/status/1148670899677257728
That is interesting, but I don’t see why they wouldn’t. Can never have too many picks. More picks means more trade assets even if you don’t want to use them all.
Yeah you don’t trade a player the caliber of Westbrook for just cap relief.
If the Cavs traded Love and didn’t get back at least a solid young player and a pick, we’d all be in an uproar. And Love isn’t the caliber of player Westbrook is. Granted, we also don’t have as many picks as OKC, but still.

My proposed trade:
Heat get: Westbrook, JR Smith
Cavs get: J. Johnson, B. Adebayo, Miami 1st Round pick (unprotected)
Thunder get: G. Dragic, T. Herro, D. Jones Jr.
http://tradenba.com/trades/SyWLDPfWB
Forgot to mention: Miami’s 1st Round pick is from 2026.
No way will the Heat want to give up Bam.
If we land a pick/prospect for JR I will be ecstatic. Both would be over the moon.
Yeah the Heat could include another player to make salary work.

Heat fans are suggesting that the Cavs are helping Miami/OKC complete a deal. I haven’t seen any news on it though.
According to Heat fans: “Meyers Leonard was listed on Miami’s roster as #0, he isn’t anymore 👀”
I don’t want to trade Love. I want him to retire a Cavalier. However, if we have to trade him and we can get real assets for him then Portland would be my choice.
