Live Thread: Cavs vs. Heat

We’ve got an earlier than usual game tonight as the Cavaliers have returned from their three game road trip and prepare to host the Miami Heat.  Dion Waiters will have to sit this one out as he is still being punished for his gummy bear incident.  For the Cavs, Kevin Porter Jr. and Matthew Dellavedova are both listed as questionable while Dylan Windler apparently is still at least a couple weeks away from returning.

After the nail biting loss to the Sixers this Cleveland team has shown that they can scrap and have a chance against most any opponent.  Tonight that means trying to contain Jimmy Butler while also getting their first shot at break out undrafted rookie Kendrick Nunn.

If it helps their confidence, the Cavs can look back to see the Last Two Minute Report from the previous game admitted that the refs missed Embiid throwing Collin Sexton out of the way for a rebound, so there is that.  Now it’s time to look towards the future and hope that a mix of bonding on the road and the return to home cooking puts the Cavs in the right mindset to take down the current third seed in the East while inching towards a .500 record.

One continuing trend to watch is the consistent plus/minus studs of Tristan Thompson and Cedi Osman.  Thompson’s rating is +27.9 and Cedi’s is +24.9 (via Fear the Sword).  While both have had some good moments (TT having a lot of good moments) it is most telling that they are the two players that don’t have a true positional backup.  Until Windler, Henson, and Zizic get back it is just something they will have to fight through and hopefully the Cavs can hold things together through force of will like they have so far many times this season.  If they can limit Jimmy Butler and keep the Heat’s youth contained Cleveland has a real shot to steal a win here tonight.

I’m going all in on hope and predicting Cedi does a surprisingly sufficient job containing Butler while Love and Sexton have some good bounce back shooting.  It’ll be close, but Cavs 111 to Miami 107.

Go Cavs!
