Live Thread: 2020 NBA Draft!
2020-11-18We’re back, baby! First live thread in eight months! Man I missed it. Exciting goings on so far: the Cavs rumored to be trading back with the Knicks or Celtics, the TWolves reportedly listening to offers up until the buzzer, and an infinity of possible Danny Ainge trades (that will never happen) threatening to crash the multiverse.
As long as the Cavs are entertaining and still have Larry Nance Jr. and Kevin Love on their roster at night’s end, I’ll be happy. So chime in everyone with the latest, thoughts, takes, news, and humor.
Here’s Eli with a standard response for every one.

As always, go Cavs!
Keep up the good work gang!
NBA investigating Bucks/Bogdan deal for tampering. CYA not backing out. Deal is dead now.

Hayward opted out, so he’s an UFA. I don’t expect him back in Boston.
Not sure if anyone saw this:

Saw him play a fair amount. He’s a competitor, for sure, but so is everyone else trying to make an NBA squad. Doubt he plays much in the league. If he was a much better shooter, then sure.
Knicks just dumped 40 mil in salary. Gibson, Payton, Ellington, and Portis all gone.
gotta sign more CAA clients LMFAO

Why would Hayward leave that kind of money on the table?
He went to Boston thinking he would be the man, instead, he’s like the 4th or 5th option. He might just want more touches etc.
I want Payton if Delly walks.
I like the Okoro pick. As everyone has said if he can develop a jump shot then he could be one of the top player’s to come out of this draft. Long term I think we are still in for some disappointing years and could be awhile before the playoffs are a reality. I doubt TT re-signs and I think KLove will get moved for pennies on the dollar. Drummond re-upping was a no brainer for him. He could be a valuable trade piece at the deadline. No big name free agents will want to come here. I do really… Read more »
FWIW, I could handle a Drummond/Hayward deal. Get a multi-year commitment at a lower #. Bring back TT. And Delly. Use an exception for some more depth at 4-5.
G: Sexton, Garland, Porter, Exum, Delly
W: Hayward, Cedi, Windler, Okoro, Fonzie
B: Love, TT, LNJ, Bell, Wade. (FA)
3 non-Okoro thoughts on Okoro pick. 1) No backcourt panic. We did not reach for a guard in wake of KPJ issues or Garland’s poor rookie year. Garland’s progress in camp has FO optimistic on him. 2) Frontcourt stays static. Okongwu, Avdija, & Toppin were all there for the taking. Cavs still open to possibility of Love/Drummond beyond this year. Or found neither worth much in a trade so NOW are open to it. 3) FA. TT & Delly more likely to return as the leader/culture guys. TT playing more. That would make 12 guaranteed guys with Fonzie, Bell, &… Read more »
Some Okoro tidbits/stats:
1) Ranked in 90th percentile in 1v1 iso defensive possessions.
2) Ranked in 89th percentile in scoring at the rim in halfcourt.
3) 56th percentile on spot ups.
Per Synergy.
He’s a ridiculous finisher near the rim. Not so much a monster dunker (although of course he has highlight reel dunks), just super skilled putting it in off the backboard in traffic.
I like the pick just for the simple reason that he gives the Cavs someone who can actually stay in front of his man defensively.
Roster by age:
19-23: (6): Okoro (19), KPJ (20), Garland (20), Sexton (21), Stevens (23, 2W), Wade (23, NG).
24-28: (7): Windler (24), Exum (25), Osman (25), Bell (25, NG), Drummond (27), LNJ (27), McKinnie (28, NG).
29-33: (1). Love (32). (TT is 29, Delly 30).
34+: (0).
wow, when you put it this way, it’s clear to me that the Cavs are probably 5 years away from being competitive, barring any LeBron type of FA signings.
Honestly makes me feel better about the Okoro pick, they’re looking for a star…. he has the athleticism and mindset, they’re hoping he puts it together on offense to become a playmaker.
So, current state of the Cavs:
Roster (10): Garland, Sexton, Cedi, Love, Drummond; Exum, KPJ, Okoro, Windler, LNJ.
Non-guaranteed (3): McKinnie, Bell, Wade.
2-way (1): Stephens (Mooney?)
FAs (2): TT, Delly.

hope Cavs have a connect with Dotson, would be a nice camp flier.
nevermind, Bulls swooped him
Cavs pick could be solid on a team with plenty of guys that need the ball in their hands to be effective
Yeah, they really didn’t need a guy who has to have the ball. That;”s why I thought they needed a guy like Okongwo or Okoro.
I disagree with this… the guys who “have to have the ball” on this Cavs team all suck horribly outside of Sexton, a guy who’s unwilling to pass.
I didn’t watch enough to feel comfortable evaluating, but lots of rookies struggle. Garland may get better, he has some skills.
Absolutely… and I’ve probably been the biggest Garland fan around here. I’m strictly speaking about the current situation now without projecting into the future.
FWIW, I’ll take the Okoro pick as a good sign that Garland’s gonna break out and show us something different. Just really worried his shot won’t come back because his confidence isn’t high.
i’m torn… because i think that means they still believe in Garland and KPJ, but given where things stand now, I think that’s overvaluing them.

With what, I wonder? Drummond? Love? KPJ?
KPJ is untouchable, from what I hear. Maybe Cedi.
I wonder if a S&T involving TT could net a late first/early 2nd?

yup, Boston fans I chat with are very mad Ainge passed him up.
windler going to play this year ?
Yes
And he’s gonna be good.
He’s 24. He oughtta be.
Good pick for the Wolves, IMO. Project, but an All Star if he pans out.
