CtB Trifecta: Caps, Preview, and Live Thread (or, RICK ROLLING)
2023-01-12Good evening CtB!
Time to clean out the backlog and get back to business! Some random thoughts heading into tonight’s action…
1. Quickcap: Cavs 112, Suns 98 (or, Pro-Caris, Pro-Neto Agendas Victorious)
The story of this game was about the bench gang of Raul Neto, Caris LeVert, and Lamar Stevens clamping the game down on defense and putting away the hospital Phoenix Suns in the Valley of the Sun, 112-98. Those (me) who have been clamoring for Neto backup PG minutes have won the war of ideas. He’s been playing winning basketball for the past couple of weeks, and it would behoove Coach J.B. Bickerstaff to get over his trust issues with Neto and put some respect on the man’s game. Any time the point of attack defense is lacking, Neto should be in the game to change the dynamics.
Even though the counting stats don’t pop off, Caris LeVert may have had his best game as a Cav from an impact standpoint with a +28 plus/minus in 28 minutes off the bench against Phoenix. He’s been trending in the right direction over the past few weeks (Utah notwithstanding) looking more decisive with the ball (6-10 shooting, seven assists to one turnover), and being extremely active on defense (three steals). After some cursory research, Caris is comfortably a top 10 third offensive option in the NBA. This is relevant given all of the trade talk surrounding LeVert. Trying to improve upon LeVert means trying to acquire a player too good to be available for cheap: guys such as Bradley Beal, Jimmy Butler, Malcolm Brogdon, Michael Porter Jr., or CJ McCollum. Given the smoke regarding Tim Hardaway Jr., it’s safe to say any player the Cavs do acquire in a LeVert trade is highly likely to be a lesser player that they’re banking on “fit” to make up for the loss in talent/skill. To that, yours truly says “that’s some bozo shit!”
2. Quickcap: Cavs 114, Jazz 116 (or, Fat Cats, the Sequel)
The Cavs fell into their “fat cats” trap in this game, getting torched on the boards (outrebounded 54-37) and playing selfish basketball (outassisted 21-18). There were bright spots starting off with Donovan Mitchell entertaining the former home crowd with a 40-burger (46 points total). Also, Lamar Stevens had a great game off the bench and guarding Lauri Markkanen. But Cedi Osman was awful off the bench, NBA Champion Kevin Love had an ice cold night shooting, and Caris LeVert got refballed into oblivion. J.B. could’ve helped sticking with some more Love for rebounding and some more Neto for perimeter defense. All in all, it was a game the Cavs deserved to lose and did.
3. RICKY RUBIO IS BACK
ESPN Sources: After a full year of rehabilitating an ACL tear in his left knee, Cavaliers guard Ricky Rubio is targeting a return against the Trail Blazers on Thursday. Rubio will practice today, and if all goes well, play in Portland tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/wB5RzNhRdy

WELCOME BACK KING! LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
4. NBA Champion Kevin Love goes home
The Cavs travel to the City of Roses to take on the Portland Trail Blazers in some late night basketball action. It’s a homecoming game for Love so hopefully he can get his shot going in the friendly confines of Moda Center. This season the Blazers are the poster child of mediocrity. The Cavs need to handle their business and it starts on the defensive end forcing turnovers against the turnover-happy Blazers. Ricky’s back, the squad is deep, it’s time to get excited about the second half of the season, Go Cavs!
Garland dribbling the air out of the ball like 2012 Kyrie!
Time to bench him. I’ve seen enough.
Another 3… sigh .. and a open one too..
Stevens has a windup like Byron Leftwich.
Pass the ball Garland
Love what open.
Speaking of open, Eubanks had a mile then.
Ricky’s feeling it
Need some lake Oswego magic
Rubio already controlling the game. Genius
Remember a couple years ago when they stopped callin stupid fouls and players didn’t fall down every play?
Garland clobbered by Hart and no call.
Seems like nothing new.
Garland havin a rough night.
These damn 11pm game is going to finish late because of all these fouls and free throws.
Jesus. Darius.
The rip thru, even the new call, sucks and ruins the game. On the playground if you called that shit you’d get punched in the face
Klove in. Run coming for someone.
DG and DM should just start usin the rip through move to get to the line too then.
Cedi should be in this lineup instead of Caris with Rubio and Garland also on the floor
Gotta pop him when he rips through like that.
Lame rip through move
Good D. Lucky bounce
Can you imagine blazers are shooting 28/49 57% and 7/17 41% from 3.. WE NEED STOPS!
Rubioooooo!
I’ve missed Rubio’s 3ball.
Nice 5 point scoring.. now lets get some more stops… seems like we can’t get lately, especially with all the fouling and free throws…
With a late start time of 11pm.. we need to win this game.. have us fans staying up
RICKY
Rubio comes in and the ball starts zipping around.
Yes!!! RUBIO!
JB Goin full thibs.
He’s been resting for a year, lol
can’t blame Okoro for that one.
How is that over and back if possession changed?
Had his foot down in bounds. Sucky call but the right one.
Blazers are drawing So much fouls sigh
Bonus baby
Put em away Donovan
Much better pace to offense.
DG3!
I hate these refs
At least DM draws the foul for 3.
blazers are just getting to the lane at will.
Ball is moving a bit now.
Fantastic finish okoro
Nice play by Allen and Okoro .. now make your free throw.
LeVert at the 4?
Hope Mobley is better after the rest. Looks sharper.
Oops, spoke too soon.
Two quick ones. Let’s get in the bonus.
Allen just a black hole. Ball goes in. Doesn’t come out.
I wish this stupid game would stop interrupting all my gambling commercials
Yeah Mr. White! Science!
Wade gonna be out longer than expected. Argh.
Really?
Rolled ankle or something. Not serious, but will add time to return.
So, 2025 now?
Cavs are on pace for 18 3pt attempts, WTF LMFAOOOO
They just run offense with zero thought about a game strategy.
running offense from 1994 LMFAO
That shot putt by Allen from the left elbow was my least favorite shot.
Spida Dance to the hoop.
Dame goi g right around whoever is guarding him
Spida Magic!
Get a stop and a bucket to close it out
Garland without a plan gets bailed out
Dumb fouls too. Gotta let that one go. Nurkic actually used the bump to get his balance.
JB should Chuck his clipboard at Scott Foster
Why do we look like a ymca pickup team in offense? JB instill some effing discipline dude. This is a clown show.
Cavs just taking dumb shots.
Yezus. What a garbage call.
Getting refballed
That should be a jump ball
Spida slam!
I’ll take it but that looked like offensive interference
That sonics team might be best to never win a ship.
Time for a run I like this lineup
Ice!!!
ICE ICE BABY!
Lots of missed shots at the rim, as Allen slams it in.
Cavs playing dumb.
I know Mitchell is good, but maybe 1 on 4 isn’t the answer.
God I hate watching them on the road
Refs not calling shit. At least not against the Blazers.
