Live Thread: Cavs @ Spurs
2024-02-03Outside of Charles Bassey and TY Jerome, these teams are FULLY OPERATIONAL tonight in San Antonio. Though Jarrett Allen twisted his ankle against the Grizz, he’s supposed to play tonight. So get ready for a red hot Cavs squad versus Wemby, Cedi, Pop, Dougie McBuckets, Mimadi Diakite, and Keldon Johnson. I expect Allen and Mobley to try to beat Victor with strength while the Cavs to try to run these Spurs out of the gym. I’m taking the Cavs +9.5, the Vegas line. I’m also 100% kidding cuz gambling sucks. Go Cavs.
LT up
We are gonna need a big game from a 2nd tier guy tonight. Maybe more than one. LeVert, Strus, Okoro, Wade, Niang.
My gut is that we are probably due for an ugly loss before the ASG.
Just like to add, if Allen is iffy, I probably would sit him. If he can go full, then let’s go.
DG questionable too.
He’s been questionable even when he plays.
He’s definitely the X factor. I’m super excited for his next big game. Just love watching him.
AGREE WITH MOST Of YOUR POST JASON—— AS A COACH WHEN IT PERTAINED TO INJURIES I ALWAYS LISTENED TO THE TRAINERS AND ALWAYS “ ERRORED ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION ⚠️ “ ———- SHORT TERM SACRIFICE— LONG TERM GAIN——IF TRAINERS GIVE 👍——THEN LET JA “ ROLL “ 👍🏀
TOTALLY AGREE WITH WHAT NATE POSTED—— NETS ARE PLAYING HARDBALL WITH DFS —- WANT 2 NUMBER 1 s —- GOOD LUCK WITH THAT—— SHOULD BE SOME GOOD BUYOUTS—- WONT HAVE TO GIVE ANYTHING UP —- REST JA TONIGHT— NOT WORTH THE RISK OF MORE SERIOUS ANKLE INJURY—- GO CAVS 👍🏀
He was questionable vs SA too.
I’d go ahead & play him tonight and plan to rest him vs the Wiz if necessary. If Mobes is still not platlying b2b’s, the JA can play vs the Nets while Mobes sits. Then both back for the Raptors.
I’d be cautious, but not overly so.
Good point.
Looks like JA is questionable for tonight’s game.
Win tonight and we are the 2 seed!
Lots of good vibes. Trade deadline approaching. If one of the nets wings is available, do you put together a package?
I doubt it. I wouldn’t do anything to this squad. I think they try to move TY Jerome to get under tax, then sign CPJ and watch the buyout market for a vet.
I am pretty sure we are already under the tax. Around $3 mil or so.
when i browse the NBA standings, i am most pleased when i see where GS is sitting.. they had a nice run, did some good drafting (made easy by the incompetence of many front offices).. the tank is now empty.. a great team.. a dynasty ? (that’s a stretch).. the next gen is in control.. it’s just “nature’s way” (anyone know the early 70s band with that great song ?)..
Spirit.
I probably have that album in the crates in the attic.
They are a dynasty for sure. They Steph-Klay-Dray core being the constant. From 2015 to 2022 they won 4 titles and apieared in 6 Finals. 4 titkes and 6 Finals in 8 years. They had the best record 3 straight. Thiugh missing the POs twice & being dead last one year mars it some. It is still a top 5-ish run. 1. Celtics: 1957-1969. 13 years. 11 titles. 12 Finals. 8 straight at one point. 9 of 10 with 10 straight Finals on the front end. 10 of 11 on the back end. Russell there for all of them. Best… Read more »
2. Minneapolis Lakers: 1948-1954. 6 titles in 7 years. 6 for 6 in Finals. One being NBL. Two three-peats only interrupted by Mikan getting a hairline fracture in his leg in the POs one year. Mikan won in 1947 with a different team. 7 of 8 for him. Best record 4 times (1 tie). 6 for 6 in Finals.
3. Chicago 1991-1998. 6 in 8 for MJ & Scottie & Phil with MJ out for 1 playing baseball, almost 2. Best record 3 times, tied for a 4th but lost TB. 6 for 6 in finals.
4. . Los Angekes Lakers. 1980-1989/91. The Magic & Kareem Lakers won 5 in 10 years, with 8 Finals appearances. 5 in 8 form 1980-1988. They had the best record twice. Kareem-less they had the best record in 1990 and got to the Finals in 1991. Peak Magic era, 1980-1991, 5 titkes, 9 Finals, 3 best records.
Definitely top five as much as I dislike them. Especially considering the Russell and Mikan dynasties were in a very different league.
Depending on how one wants to parse the Duncan era Spurs and Kobe era Lakers, I think the Dubs are in that conversation once you get past the Mt. Rushmore era Dynasties. I’d put the Spiluts next, then Kobe, then the Dubs, but it is close.
5. Duncan era Spurs. 1999-2014. 5 titles, 6 Finals. Won 4 titles and had the best record 3 times from 1999-2007 (9 years) (2 ties). From 2008 to 2015 they added another title, 2 Finals, and 2 best records.
6. Kobe era Lakers. 2000-2010. 5 titles, 7 Finals in 11 years. 2 best records. Shaq & Kobe three peated 2000-02 and added a Finals in 2004 with 1, best record. Kobe & Gasol went to three straight from 2008-2010, winning 2 with 1 best record.
7. Dubs.
8. Bird’s Celtics. 1980-87. 3 tirkes, 5 Finaks, 6 best records. Three titles & 5 Finals in 6 years from 1981-1986, plus another Final in 1987. Had the best record in the league 6 times from 1980-1986. Best record in East in 1988.
I think those are the top 8. The ABL Original Celtics were broken up by the league after winning two, and various members went in to win more with different teams.
Tha ABA Pacers got 3.
After that it is all two-titles. Frazier-Willis Reed Knicks. Bad Boy-Zeke Pistons. Havlicek-Cowens Celtics. Olajuwon Rockets. Dr. J ABA Nets. Billy McDermott ABL Fort Wayne Pistons. Leroy Edwards’ Oskosh in the ABL. Akron NBL.
A great team, to be sure, but all those pieces about how the organization was way ahead of the league by having high tech special sauce were bull. They had a core of great players, and kind of lucked into it with Draymond being unlocked by Steve Kerr.
Embiid to have knee surgery.
76’ers might be sellers at the trade deadline.
Bucks lose in Utah after being outscored 13-40 in the 4th.
wow!
Cavs now 1/2 game out of second, 1/2 game out of fourth.
“Evan Mobley Just Showed Exactly What The NBA Feared” on yt.. nice..
If he becomes an even passable 3PT shooter, we become a different animal completely.
The starting group can still attack the paint with the bigs, but Allen is really the only non-shooter from deep.
The 2nd unit can go 5 out.
And there might be room for another non-shooter in some lineups (Okoro, CPJ, etc).
It’s a little scary: the bigs are ahead of schedule: JA needed to become a better rebounder more physical and a better playmaker. He has been doing it since a December. Mobley has already improved enough on rebounding and playmaking to be great, and I was good with the shot coming along a little slower.
But maybe he’s where Isaac was at the end of last year. In which case we are the second best team in the East, and probably knocking on the door.
Mobley essentially doubled his 3PT% in one game.
He was 2/11 coming in: 18.18%
He is now 5/14 after going 3/3. 35.71%
Made more last night than he had all year.
that’s the Mobley we have been waiting for!
Inspired by Wemby? I’ll take it. He was one competitive mofo last night.
He whipped his ass man. I loved it
The loss column:
12: Boston
—————-
15: OKC, Minny, Clippers
16: Denver, Bucks, Cavs
————-
18: Knicks, 76ers
19: Kings
WATCHED REPLAY 👍🏀👍🏀👍🏀——- MOBES — (LIKE NATE POSTED) — LOOKS SMOOTHER/ NO HITCH/ BE NICE TO SEE HIM BECOME A 35% – 3 PT SHOOTER—- THINK DG STILL STRUGGLING IN THIS NEW OFFENSE/ THINK HOPE HE WILL ADJUST/ HIS PPG WILL TAKE A DIP ——— HOPING STRUS FINDS HIS STROKE AGAIN— HOPE EVERYONE CAN STAY HEALTHY/—- SPIDA WONT BE SUSPENDED ( FOR HIS PUNCH) WILL HE —— TEAM IS A JOY TO WATCH—- KEEP IT GOING CAVS 👍🏀👍🏀🍺🍺
A really good point on DG is that the minutes restriction really hurts him, bc he’s so cerebral and takes his time to figure out how to hurt defenses. So an 8 minute shift becomes 4-6 minutes, and that hurts.
I think I’m in that boat – DG needs longer shifts bc he tries a lot of high risk high reward stuff when figuring out a defense. He’s still really good, it’s just part of that re integration process
Kinda disagree. My humble take is he doesn’t need to do the high risk stuff because this is a very different team that is deep and talented. He needs to reduce his careless turnovers and improve his defense. Everything else will work out fine. He will gradually get more minutes as time goes on
I did not realize that JB would have coached the ASG if the Mavs had beat the Bucks tonight. The lead by 24 after 1 but gave most of it back before half.
It would be lame for Glenn to do it: he was on ESPN last week.
Low key if JB coached the Allstar game someone here would be complaining about the rotations
Giannis points out, rightfully, that the Bucks coaching staff has earned the honor.
Hard guy not to like m.
ha-ha!
Box score only for this one for me.
Gotta love Allen getting 18 shots and Mobley 15. Them being #2 & #3 in FGA’s is a thing I wish we’d see more often. And DM, JA, & Mobes all over 60% FGs and the bigs at 66.7%+.
Mobley hit 3 triples? 3-3 from deep. Wow.
Niang 0-9 and 0-8 from deep. I always seems to miss his stinkers.
Knicks and 76ers lost.
Couldn’t watch this one. Will load replay shortly. But I am officially ashamed of hacking on Mobes’ 3pt attempts.
No. He fixed the hitch. We motivated him.
Cavs.
cool!
The aggressive, young Kings gave us fits last year. Looking forward to the game on Monday.
Sabonis as good of a big as there is in the league. I’m in love with this team.
Cavs vibing right now!!! Woooot!
Great looking game — many open looks down the stretch. Didn’t shoot great but could have won by more if the shots were falling. Just super ball movement and fine D the whole game.
Just a freaking pleasure to watch.
If the Cavs were hitting threes…
Related to rotations, what I saw was the core four starting the game, and then the pairs of DM/JA or DG/ EM taking turns running the offense. I think it’s not a bad idea during the regular season.
I can’t complain about anything.
We are now 3rd in the East!
Number one in my heart.
Curry had 60 in a loss to the Hawks
Lakers win.
Lakers up by 6 with 11 seconds to go
Cool that Cedi and Darius still recall their high five routine
Guys. This Cavs team feels pretty special.
Yes
I think that every year.
This year I am right!
Go Cavs!
George’s! Pop has a sense of humor.
Pop goes after minivan 😂
Were the Mobley 3s wide open? Did the defense come out at all?
I only saw highlights,Looked like he had room on most of them.
Shouldn’t the Cavs select the tech FTs for the Spurs?
Mitch shouldn’t get ejected but whatever, there’s 54 seconds left.
I’d have beat the shit out of Collins.
Fuck u Collins.
Zach Collins should get ejected
w 54 sec left
McBuckets auditioning.
SPIDA!!!
Thank you JA!
Spurs making a run
Nah
Abolish replays. Abolish challenges.
Abolish FT’s.
Haha the explanation is silly by the refs.
Let’s go Lakers! 100-96 LAL
Was about to post this…. Go Lakers!
Looks like another challenge
Holy shit. Merrill. What hustle.
Strus is loose!
JB coaching the ASG???
Fo rizzle!?
If we’re in the two seed…
Bucks and Knicks need to lose I think
Bucks winning in Dallas.
(not sure how you have the Bucks coach coach the ASG after 5 games or whatever)
Man. This team is amazing.
Close it out Cavs!
MOBLEY 3-3????
count your days, East
Damn Mobley!!!
Niang laying bricks tonight!
Bad idea
Looks like JB is challenging
I might challenge that last call.
Mobley with 5 fouls
Really liking what I’m seeing from Mobley tonight. Make me eat my words dude!
Money Mobley with another 3!
This team is fun to watch. They’re just on another level RN.
We lost that quarter by 1 point.
They’re gonna tie the game sometime in April at that rate :)
Lol
Wheres Merrill??
Ditto….
Niang struggling tonight
Spida-Time
Failed challenge
Nevermind
Come on pop.
Spurs really lose their edge without Wemby
OMG that Allen outlet.
