Preview/Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls, Game 3 [UPDATED: Iman reportedly will play]
2015-05-08[Make sure you read David’s excellent piece on the best Cavs lineups…]
J.R. is back for three. Will he reclaim his starting spot? Will Iman be good to go? How about LeBron’s headband? Game 3 should be an interesting one, filled with more gripping drama than your average Cavaliers promo video.
After being banned from the Q (90 minutes prior to Games 1 and 2), due to the suspension that stemmed from his flagrant takedown of Jae Crowder in Game 4 against the Celtics, Earl brings his well-rested artillery to the United Center tonight to try and provide the Cavs with some additional scoring punch. J.R. had some success against the Bulls in the regular season, averaging 17.3 points while going 15-31 from deep in three games against Chicago after joining the Cavaliers in January.
According to media reports, Smith, along with LeBron James, arrived at the arena this morning to get some extra work in an hour before the team’s scheduled shootaround. J.R. sounded excited to be back with his team.
“There’s no better feeling,” Smith said. “Being able to go out there and play playoff basketball with your teammates and a great team is something that I definitely don’t take for granted. Especially after missing the last two games.”
Tempering J.R.’s return a bit is the question of Iman Shumpert’s availability following a groin strain he sustained in the third quarter of Game 2. At the moment, Shump’s status is a game-time decision according to the Cavs. In addition to the lock-down defense he provides, Iman has also been able to channel his inner J.R. during the first two games on offense, totaling 37 points and going 8-17 from beyond the arc.
“I’m going to do whatever I can to get on the court,” Shumpert said when interviewed before today’s shootaround. “I haven’t given it a go. I haven’t really done anything to test it out or anything. Rest and treatment right now.”
[UPDATE: It’s being reported that Iman will play in Game 3]
David Blatt's pregame press conference begins 25 mins late because of weather/traffic. He says Shumpert will play.

His performance has led some to speculate that, despite J.R. being back, Shump should remain in the starting line-up. Obviously, his level of health will play a large part in whether or not this becomes a question for David Blatt to ponder.
The other big story going into Game 3 is the ongoing saga of a 7.5″ long by 2″ wide continuous loop of absorbent terrycloth…

I’m not sure what the over/under in Vegas is on The King deciding to wear his cotton crown for Game 3, although I would certainly bet on him sporting it after the results of Game 2.
Almost lost amid the hub-bub of “Headband-Gate” and “Promo-Gate” is LBJ closing in on yet another playoff milestone. Sitting currently at 1,059 assists for his playoff career, with his next one, he passes Tony Parker for 6th place on the NBA’s all-time playoff assists list. With three more, he passes Steve Nash, and with four, he passes Larry Bird for 4th place. Not to mention, the next time he scores at least 30 points with at least five assists and five rebounds (as he did in Game 2), he will tie Michael Jordan for the most (51) times ever doing that in the playoffs.
One other Cavs franchise playoff record was also set in Game 2… but not by LeBron (mainly since he doesn’t come off the bench). Yes, Matthew Dellavedova set a new franchise playoff record for the most assists (nine) for a player off of the bench. Those nine dimes, in addition to his nine points, certainly came in handy for the Cavs, especially once Shump went down with the injury in the third quarter.
On the Bulls side of the equation, the focus is squarely on the shoulders of Derrick Rose, who is probably just as sick of the “he’s much better on two days rest than one” narrative as Kevin Love was of the “fitting in” one. The new-ish wrinkle for him is his glaring 0-0 stat from the foul line. DRose has just four points on 17 drives in the first two games, and hasn’t actually attempted a free throw since Game 5 against the Bucks. According to ESPN Stats and Information, it’s the first in his career that Rose has gone three straight games without a free throw attempt.
“If they’re not calling it, they’re not calling it,” Rose said. “I can’t worry about that.”
His coach felt a little stronger than DRose, and expressed his frustration after Game 2.
“I guess he’s got to go harder, I don’t know,” Thibodeau said after a long pause. “It looks like there’s a lot of contact to me. But obviously others don’t see it that way.”
You can be sure that Thibs will be in Tony Brothers’ ear early and often in Game 3 to plead his case for his star player.
Needless to say, the Cavs will have their hands full with the Bulls as Chicago tries to hold onto the home court advantage they gained with a win in Game 1. With J.R. back in action, it should improve their chances. The big question mark will be the health of Iman. Even if he’s able to go, will he be operating at peak capacity, or will the injury slow him down on defense?
I believe the Cavs can force the issue and win Game 3 in a closely contested tilt, especially since the pressure is back on the Bulls to adjust. Even if the Cavs lose this one, a split in Chicago with a win on Sunday should still keep them on track to win the series.
Chime in with your thoughts and predictions for Game 3.
Why not a T on Brooks there?
It was, right?
LBJ clearly gassed by looking at that last play…
That was a bs call.
These 3 pointers are keeping us in this game for real, 11-23 at this point
It’s this kind of stupid defensive philosophy that will lose a lot of games…letting players drive to the basket untouched is one I truly don’t agree with…a “hard”foul would suffice…let them earn it from the free throw line
I agree but I’m not sure if some of the Cavs players are a bit tired.
How many minutes has LeBron played? Let’s hope the Cavs can get this game because all this minutes for LeBron can take his toll for the next one.
31 out of 33 so far.
Playoff games are a phenomenon. Having a stake in them is all the more exhilarating
Well said Bimmy
Yeah that does help on the enjoyment factor
Man, Shump has such good hands on defense. He smacks that ball perfectly without hitting hands. You can always hear it’s all ball!
cavs are still withstanding each Bulls run to tie or barely take a lead…intense game so far
JJ deep loving it
Delly and TT are FREAKING BULLDOGS out there!!
Boyyyy James Freaking Jones
JAMES MOTHERFREAKING JONES!!!
Kyrie needs to hold better defense on Rose, Rose is getting to the rim at will this quarter. Cavs need to take better shots and drive to the rim, Bulls are being more aggressive and getting fouls
Need to put Shumpert on Rose
Is anyone else out there sick of listening to the Bulls-loving announcers! I can’t take it anymore!
The announcers said the refs should call it both ways. I’d like to hear the announcers call it equally both ways. Not pro-Bulls!
Car dale Jones continues to do god’s work on Twitter.
I like how Lebron is looking for Timothy this quarter
after that Tech by lebron that was good chance for Bulls to gain momentum but Cavs still have solid lead so far….very big cajones by this team
That’s there all night for LJ, they should try that again.
Thompson is absolutely abusing Noah and I love every second!
Nice rebound from Thompson, thats what I love from him
I love it even more when he’s drawing fouls with guys trying to contain him. Got to be so frustrating.
What a freakin blond!!!……
Tt hosting a clinic c out there.
Moz just can’t hit that little open jumper…
He should take a step to his left and use glass on that jumper
SHUMP!!
I guess Bulls fans can stop crying about Rose not getting any FTs now.
Noah is such a privileged rich kid poser.
Nice adjustment by Cavs to stop Rose from driving…
Love games like this. Missed it for 4 years.
I feel like a kid in a candy store.
This game is reaching another level!! If the Cavs can get this win I think it will take a lot from the Bulls emotionally.
Most def., it will take fight out of em
Cmon cavs! Love the intensity. Irving 3 for 3 from deep is key
Best game of the playoffs so far outside of that Spurs-Clippers series
That tech seemed to pump LBJ up
I was hoping that might. Over Noah
its on like donkey kong!!! LETS GO CAVS!!
that LeBron pass….thats why hes 4th on the assist list!! this series finally feels like playoff basketball after the 1st 2 games were washes
Love that Lebron went at em and the Cavs playin with immense intensity
I love seeing that kind of fight out of LBJ. He needs more of that. I love it!
WOW What a pass by Lebron
No kidding. I’m always amazed when Timo handles those passes. Hat tip.
Hehehe i loved that one!! I don’t care about the tech
I swear Noah said F U Bitch
Love this, ohhhhhhhhhhh mannnnnnn lovin itttttttt
Our big men have no lift on these put backs! What the heck.
Nice to see a 3 by shump
Lol I aint think Shumpert called that bank shot lol
Convenient banking hours for Shump!
That was a nice play run there and Kyrie got foul.
At least Cavs bench is outscoring bulls;
Ey ey Delly getting some ESPN airtime with some highlights showing him and lebron :P
Let’s hope Kyrie’s injury is no that bad. Maybe the Cavs should try to run some picks for Kyrie so that he can get his shot more easily.
Kyrie hurting, for sure. Ankle and hip.
This is a huge problem. Need big 2nd half from JR.
LBJ still not finding the range on the jumper. It is coming…
Amazing to see Delly checking D Rose on multiple possessions. Desperate times. So far prayers have been answered.
Anybody’s game in the 2nd half. If Kyrie and Shump weren’t hurting we win this going away. As it is it’s going to be tough. LBJ has coasted a fair amount on D so with any luck we stay in it and ride the train down the stretch.
Cavs missing K-Love’s defensive rebounding right now
Cavs would sweep them with KLove
I agree he covers all the holes we have right now.
Whoever jumps out on a run first has this.
I agree! Is imperative that the Cavs get the a good start and don’t relax.
I think the Cavs played well but they can do a lot better next half easily IMO….. If LeBron starts to hit his jumpers maybe the Cavs can build a decent lead going into the 4th.
Bulls can say the same thing though; they’re shooting terrible, rose and butler are 4-18, and they’re still in it.
Your right but I think some of the Cavs players are just a little bit nervous do to the environment.
I think Kyrie’s hip is an issue. He has looked less than 100% since end of celtics series. Can’t explode by his guy. Its crazy that none of the announcers have noticed it. They are using him purely as a decoy right now to space floor.
Yeah but he’s solid enough as a catch and shoot guy that he can space.
That is scary, we need him healthy.
I don’t think it’s his hip. He clearly turned his ankle earlier…
I think you’re on the money EG.
F Jalen Rose! That’s why Chicago Bulls will win the series.
he’s also said bulls would win the East so still sticking to his pick
key for Cavs to start out hot in this 3rd quarter and not let crowd into it, they have been doing well on certain runs by Bulls but 2nd half is crucial
Delly really gave the Cavs a boost.
Hope LeBron figures this out. Halfcourt offense is just painful
Blatt tells huddle: “Run your sets.”
LeBron thinks: What’s a set?
I can’t wait to see Simmons with the Tnt guys next year.
In place of Shaq, pleaaaaaaase
Way to call it, Nate!
Jalen, you can’t stop Delly, you can only try to contain him.
Jalen can’t hope to pronounce him…
As much as I have criticized Delly throughout the season,I can admit that he has been playing well the past few games
Tristan is one of the weakest big man in the game when it comes to taking it to the hole “strong”
Ever have a positive thing to say George. Are you sure your a cavs fan
They’re doing a great job keeping him off O-reb too. TT would be that much better if he could learn the ben wallace tap out
If we win the half after the mistakes and shooting by Lebron we got this. Great game by Delly and bench. Is Irving hurt?
Jason Lloyd insists he is fine per Twitter. But the grimaces give me pause.
hurt ankle in first quarter still think its bothering him
Thanks between radio and play by play it is hard to get full picture.
He’s hurting. He rolled his ankle early on.
A little sloppy, but very good game so far, unlike games 1 and 2
Really hoping Blatt doesn’t forget Mozgov.
Great half of basketball, great game so far
Do they sell Delly fatheads?
once lebron ever wakes up and hits mid range jumpers cavs can win this…mirotich is highest scorer for bulls right now and have feeling cavs will adjust to him…also rebounding needs to improve
Pump fake, TT!
yah he should’ve done that gotten noah his 3rd foul
At least that would have him at the line to shoot 2. Plus a foul for Noah.
Looked clean, and the way they’ve been calling it…….
I’m all in on Delly being main backup pg next year.
I work with a guy who thinks Aaron craft will be the one. No way in my book. Unless Gilbert wants to sell his jerseys.
Craft got no shooting range, let alone from 3
Cavs bench a big factor tonight. Delly, JFJ and JR have 18 points so far.
