While the Cavs stole home court from the Hawks and jumped out to an early series lead after winning Game 1, 97-89, they head into Game 2 with a great deal of uncertainty regarding without Kyrie Irving due to an aching left knee. Irving missed the team’s morning shootaround, instead spending the time getting a further evaluation on his knee after treatment. The latest news had him getting another MRI on the knee, and he is listed as “questionable” now out for tonight’s game.
“This is obviously one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever dealt with,” Irving said after Game 1. “We do days and days and go out there and it’s nothing like simulating a game so for me, I just have to continue to do what I’ve been doing and do whatever is necessary to put myself out there. I’m all about winning. That’s the only thing that matters.”
Since Kyrie can’t go, LeBron, who himself is dealing with a tender right ankle after twisting it stepping on a sideline cameraman in Game 1, will be taxed with a larger share of the ball-handling duties.
“That means less touches in the paint,” James said. “If one of our ball-handlers is out, I’ve got to handle the ball more along with (Dellavedova). It changes my approach a little bit.”
According to David Blatt, Delly will likely start in Kyrie’s place at the point.
“I’ll be ready to go,” Dellavedova said. “Whatever the team needs.”
What the team may miss more than ball handling though, is the threat of Irving being on the floor, even though injured, as a decoy. No matter how hobbled he may appear, he still requires attention from defenders for his outside shooting. Even in his 27 minutes in Game 1, he chipped in 10 points on 4-10 shooting, including 2-3 from deep, as well as six assists.
Other Cavs will have to step up and help LeBron and J.R. Smith with the scoring load, and the team will look to get more output from Iman Shumpert, Delly and James Jones (who were a combined 1-16 from the floor, and 0-10 from three in Game 1).
The Hawks did not make it through Game 1 unscathed either, as Demarre Carroll, who suffered a sprained left knee and some bruising in the fourth quarter.
Initially, the injury looked much worse than it turned out to be, as he needed crutches to walk after the game on Wednesday night. However, he was back on the floor with the Hawks for shootaround and reportedly even took some shots. The Hawks are listing Carroll as a “game-time decision” for Game 2 tonight, even though his left knee was heavily wrapped, he walked with a limp, and Kent Bazemore said he expects to start in Carroll’s place. Bazemore gives up almost four inches and 50 pounds to the man he’ll be charged with guarding (LBJ), so he might have to take Paul Millsap up on his offer to help guard the King.
“It’s probably next man up for them, too,” James said. “They’ve played with injuries obviously less than we have but that’s not my concern about who is in their lineup. My concern is about who we got and who is going to be suited up for us when it’s time to get ready to go again.”
Despite the injuries on both sides, this is a critical game for both teams. Atlanta has their backs to the wall, and will be fighting hard to avoid an 0-2 deficit going to Cleveland. But, already down one of their big three and potentially missing another, the Cavs sound determined to take advantage of the opportunity to take the Hawks out as quickly as possible.
“We are just as desperate as we were in game one to win this one, as well; so we are going to come out the same way, stop their ability to make plays. We can try to slow them down; we can’t stop them. They’re a great offensive team but we just want to slow them down and do what we need to do on our end,” James said.
The running narrative with Kyrie’s injury issues has been whether or not the Cavs should just shut him down in the hopes that he can get healthier for a potential showdown with the winner of the Golden State/Houston matchup (the Warriors have a 2-0 lead in the series after a close 99-98 victory last night). However, they can’t afford to look past a still dangerous Hawks team and save Irving for a round that may never come if they don’t take care of business.
In other news, guess who’s birthday it is? Your favorite embattled “rookie” Cavs Coach, David Blatt. Ol’ Dave is 56 years young today. I imagine all the guys got together and got him something nice… or at least sang something like this…
“Happy Birth-day to you…
Just in time for Game Two…
We may not have Ky-rie…
But the bench mob will do!”
According to his interviews at shootaround today, here’s what David Blatt wanted for his birthday…
It's #Cavs HC David Blatt's birthday. This is what he would like: A win, you all to be healthy, world peace & solution to high pick-n-roll
— Chris Fedor (@ChrisFedor) May 22, 2015
Health, world peace and a solution to the high pick-n-roll might be asking too much, but let’s hope even if Kyrie can’t go, LBJ and Co. can deliver a win for their birthday coach and head home up 2-0.
What’s your prediction for Game 2?
YAY! TT hits a FT
MOZ DUNK!!
HOW did Teague blow that layup?!
C’mon EG. He was intimidated by Delly . . . obviously. He thought Delly was going to pull a kangaroo out of his hat . . . or shorts or something.
Moz just can’t seem to stop Horford down low
I thought it was decent D, tho. Horford’s just good.
only player beating us right now is Horford I find
Ok. Going to take a break. Hard to comment and watch.
Crystal clean rotations on that possession
Free throws a problem tonight!
Thompson with the great block , Delly messing up those alley oops
Can’t believe Korver passed up that three…
Up by 11. We have another strong third quarter going.
Who’s our 3 point shooting coach?
TT with some serious Defense
TT with the MONSTER block!!
Anyone see he preview for Black Mass?
Yeah. Who is that about?
It’s about Joe!
That is why Lebron is deadly with the ball. Gives so many open looks. When the 3’s fall it can blow up a lead. Don’t know how the Hawks can adjust if jones delly and smith go splash.
Yeah. He gets those guys wide open shots. Just a matter of them making enough.
Wow Delly three!!! James is such a weapon. Gets shump and Delly 3 wide open threes. So great. Delly!!! Unreal. Love it
Delly went from 1-12 in the series to 3-14
Wow. Nice. And he does an ok job on Teague.
Welcome back Delly!!!
There you go Delly and Shump Treys!!!!!!
Law of averages three by Delly.
Atlanta’s going to have to put two guys on him now. It’s going to open things up for Lebron.
Delly feeling it self hahaha
DELLY HEATING UP!!!
Somebody should have helped on that Horford shot.
Shumpert feels like a nut tonight.
Shump taking over for JR this game!
Shumpert for 3, Loving this
Teague is getting his way right now
Law of averages. -> Delly
Delly needed that 3.
finally DELLLYYY
DELLY TREY!
Moz has been absent this series so far
He had a double double in Game 1?
This is starting like the second half of the final game against the Bulls.
Delly has to make those shots.
Don’t understand Bron taking that three…
C’mon Moz. Give us a few good minutes here.
I thought this was a free flowing conversation.
Need Delly to stay out of foul trouble so he can defend Teague.
Yeah, he’s already got three…
The West finals seems so much sharper, more athletic, more intense, faster paced. This series is geriatric in comparison
I think the Cavs have played with the most intensity these playoffs with the clipper vs the Spurs a close second.
Overall, but not in this series. Might be playing down to the granny level of intensity the Hawks are bringing
How important is winning Game 2 for Hawks? A LeBron James team has never lost a playoff series when taking 2-0 lead. NBA on ESPN Twitter Feed.
I like jewelry commercials.
Aren’t you married?
Prob why he hates em
Yep. I just hate jewelry commercials.
Diamonds aren’t forever. Graphite and graphene are forever.
Graphene is amazing. Might be the key to next gen batteries.
This team…
No. I told you earlier in the year I was and had several kids, but it was just to throw everyone off. I’m actually 18 and single (of course).
I think the Jewelry commercials must be a Colorado thing.
Watch the language. Last Warning.
Thanks Nate. C:tB is great because it doesn’t deteriorate into crudeness.
So how many minutes will delly get tonight? If need be could iman play the point?
I think he would have played the whole game if it wasn’t for foul trouble.
Will bet that Hawks come out like last game in second half and go inside to Millsap and Horford…
It would be nice to see Miller make some contributions.
James jones has been money all playoffs.
In the off season Thompson needs to go to finishing school.
Hakeem the Dream School you mean?
Not that fancy. A couple steps below. Just dunks and up and undwrs.
That’s the best school to go to.
Shocked that Carroll has played as much as he has…
TT needs to shot better from the FT. That could be game.
Matthew Dellavedova held Jeff Teague and Dennis Schröder scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting when he was guarding them. The Hawks duo scored 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting when guarded by anyone else (via ESPN Stats & Info)
Uh. Uh. Uh. So?
kudos on your umlaut
The Jet said that the Hawks are playing like its a regular season game. I agree, there just isnt much intensity in these games so far, especially compared with the Bulls and Celtics series
The Celtics series got us ready for this.
Yeah and the Bulls.
Kenny Smith re: Teague
“In the regular season you make your name. In the playoffs you make your fame.” In this series Teague isn’t making his fame.
agree with both of above comments—-2nd half is going to be tough without the deep bench / fresh bodies —great job by both players / coaches to be competing / winning in a hostile environment / playoff game –without KYRIE / LOVE AND OH YEAH ANDERSON —- WHAT A TOUGH BUNCH / ” NO EXCUSE ” TEAM —GO CAVS !!!
Cavs shooting 63.6% from three.
Thought the Cavs played some inspired basketball there. Contributions from deep off the bench.
Agreed. If Thompson could get his act together we’d be up a lot more.
Meh. Cavs 7/11 from three. That balances TT. Thompson just needs to board and D. Offense will come.

Hahahaha. Gotta love it when others are salty.
Up 5 on the road is nice but I’m a bit concerned with how they closed that quarter as they were up 10 at one point. Need to step on their throats NOW!
It’s tough. We are tired. Chasing Korver everywhere is tiring.
Well. I hope we can keep up this energy level. We look tired.
We are playing great on offense, everyone is contributing. Our defense need to step up, we held them to 38% in the first quarter and now they are up to 48%,not good.
Kinda weird that crawford picked up carroll’s mouthguard for him. Also gross that Korver licks his hand before shooting free throws. The ball goes through everyone’s hands….
I think Bron just yelled at him about that last inbounds… Don’t think he’s hurt or anything. Delly was just pumping him up
The Cavs are gased….. Is hard when you are missing guys from your regular rotation and the Hawks are playing 10 deep into theirs.
Let’s hope the Cavs have enough energy to finish this game.
After we score to close the quarter we usually don’t get a stop on the other end, it’s like I just knew ATL was gonna score. Don’t know what happened on that last play, sigh
what happened to JR at the end there?
Ah, jeez. Now what happened to JR?
Bron pissed off with that last play… Was he mad at JR?
JAMES FREAKING JONES!!!!!!!
Pretty nonexistent contact on that horford foul..
Bron shoulda mugged Horford there…
Ok. Shump is on tonight.
When you’re Shumpert –
Sometimes you feel like a nut.
Sometimes you don’t.
SHUMPTASTIC!!!
Shump told by Blatt to go at Korver.
