Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls
2015-10-27LeBron James lost a grueling six game Finals, with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love both unavailable due to injury. In the following weeks, he sat at a pool with Love and decided it would be best for both of them if he re-signed with the Cavs. He then cringed when J.R. Smith opted out of his contract and came back for slightly less money. He even lobbied for the Cavs to re-sign Tristan Thompson using social media. His lobbying was as passive aggressive as a significant other saying, “sure, you can watch this preseason game because it makes you happy, even though it’s completely pointless.” And, he sat on a banana boat with Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. The King did all of those things in just four short months and has to be feeling ready for opening night.
After just 48 minutes of preseason action, and one anti-inflammatory back injection, the King returns with his men to play real NBA basketball against the Chicago Bulls in under eight hours. The game tips off at 8:00 PM in the United Center, and can be seen on TNT.
The Bulls will be trotting out Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler, Tony Snell, Nikola Mirotic, and Pau Gasol. Joakim Noah will be their super in shape sixth man, and Mike Dunleavy will warm the bench after having back surgery this offseason. Rose will be wearing a face mask.
The Cavs are starting Mo Williams, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love, and Timofey Mozgov. Both Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert will not be available for this game.
Staff predictions:
Ben Werth:Â Cavs 110, Bulls 100. Kevin Love starts his All-Star season by humiliating the Bulls overrated frontline. Chicago already misses Thibs.
Nate Smith:Â Cavs 106, Bulls 102. Bulls try to prove something. Kevin Love proves they can’t defend like they did under Thibs.
EvilGenius:Â Cavs 97, Bulls 91. LeBron’s sore back outlasts D-Rose’s broken face as Cavs start out strong on their quest for a championship.
Mike Schreiner:Â Bulls 101, Cavs 96. Lack of time playing together in the preseason hurts them, but it’s nothing to worry about.
Robert Attenweiler:Â Cavs 92, Bulls 86. The rested and mostly reunited Cavs give Chicago a taste of its own defensive-minded medicine, allowing their offense plenty of time to shake the rust off. And there is definitely rust to be shaken.
David Wood:Â Cavs 95, Bulls 88. Love demands a double team at the elbow, and the Cavs are able to hit their open 3s. Matthew Dellavedova accidentally hits D. Rose in the face and the game gets scrappy.
Stuff to watch for this game:
1. Is Tristan Thompson in basketball shape? He just reported to training camp this past Friday after signing a deal worth $82 million over five years.
2. Will LeBron be on a minutes restriction? It’s never good to get shots in your back.
3. How many times does Love touch the ball in the paint? He had 2.9 elbow touches and 4 post touches a game last season. The prior season in Minnesota he had 11.6 elbow touches and 7.4 post touches a night. The team has said they want him to be more than a perimeter threat this season.
4. Is Chicago going to be an offensive minded team this year? Fred Hoiberg is an offensive minded coach, but it will be interesting to see what the Bulls do if they can’t run their offensive sets against the Cavs. Do they keep trying to or do they resort to playing lockdown defense?
5. Can Tony Snell be the quasi LeBron stopper still? During the regular season last year, Snell slowed James dramatically. James must have mistaken Tony for Kawhi Leonard.
Let us know your predictions for the game below.
GREAT pass from KLove to Moz!
Nobody ran with Bron!
Still, he should have just taken it to the rack…
What the hell was Bron doing on that breakaway drive?
Mo looks fantastic so far.
Except when He’s playing defense or jacking long Twos.
Delly will be starting by next week at this rate.
JR having a tough time with Snell on him…
Yeah I agree!!!!!!
Andy can still contribute. He’s still everywhere on the floor and doing a nice job in making the offense a little fluid.
Kevin Love, get in your spot. The rest of the Cavs, give him the damn ball.
I didn’t think we’d be losing at half time the entire season. Delays shot looks quicker which is nice. Rest of the team looks good.
Is that sarcasm, Cols?
Do I sense a Colorado accent there?
Chuck is the best —
Refs are in postseason form.
AGREE WITH YOU EVIL TOTALLY UGLY BALL BY THE CAVS YET ONLY DOWN BY 6 —T.T. BETER GET USED TO THE BIG CONTRACT —WITH THAT CONTRACT COMES PRESSURE TO PERFORM EVERY NIGHT !
I didn’t think the defense was horrendous. Mozgov is playing the scheme well and covering a lot of mistakes. I didn’t enjoy watching Love on Mirotic, but overall it was passable.
The boxing out was horrendous… and guys were losing track of their man repeatedly…
Boxing out was bad, but looked worse because they kept calling the fouls on us.
Ironically, they only have one less foul than Cavs…
Got a feeling we’re not going to get much out of TT for a couple of weeks…
He looks out of shape.
Barkley can’t pronounce Dellavadova still.
I’ll be honest, I don’t care if we lose. Might be better for the team down the line as it helps to calibrate them.
Yeah I have taken cols advice and relax.
Way too many long twos early in the shot clock in that half. Thank God For Andy and Delly helping to put some rhythm into the offense late.
Couldn’t imagine a less sloppy, worse defensive half by Cavs… yet they’re only down 6…
This feels like an extension of the preseason.
Bad half, but their defense has limited the damage of the cold shooting.
You have one job Tristan. Box out Noah off those threes.
Poor shot selection….
Rose looks pissed when delly puts the arms all over the place.
DELLY!!!
No one likes dudes in man-buns!
Andy destroying Pebbles on the attempted dunk…
Good foul when you turn an easy deuce into nothing.
Nice foul, AV. Always get your money’s worth on Noah.
KLove has had 7 shots, just not going in.
As I bite my tongue
Feelin the Love!
KLOVE!!!!
KLove, JR and Moz are a combined 2-14… That will change…
@mcten: There’s still more than 3 minutes remaining in the first half and CLE has already played 11 guys. Blatt taking “All In” quite literally
Okay now I want to see JR hit a deep 3 and windmill air guitar
I think the Cavs aren’t posting Love cause he isn’t getting deep and sealing for a spot.
No. They’re not even looking for him. And then he stopped trying.
It’ll be nice when the first quarter ends.
Great break by KLove and RJ…
Andy making things happen.
Sweet pass by Love into a small window for the RJ transition hoop.
I thought the Cavs would try to post Kevin more……..
Thought so too… not sure if it’s him or the game plan?
Finally. Andy. Thank God. I hope we don’t see James Jones again.
AV in there fighting for boards and making his presence known…
AV with the offensive board and Mo with the three. Like old times.
I know exactly what I was thinking! Is it 2009?
Second that. I wish I could have gone back and told myself to enjoy the season. Where is the delorean when I need it?
What is this camera angle? What we really need is a shot that doesn’t show the entire half court.
Cavs seem to be telegraphing many of the plays they run. This is clearly a team that hasn’t been able to practice together. Also a lot of shots look flat. Is everyone in game shape today?
PS – every time I see Mo Gotti flash on the screen in that good ol Cavs jersey I get a warm, fuzzy feeling inside (or is that just the imperial stout I’m sipping?;)
MO GOTTI!!
AV sighting!
The Cavs offense is not looking too hot. It’s purposeless passing. I’d rather the iso action.
And it’s not good that Mo looks like the second best cav out there right now.
I don’t get the new Seth Rogen X-Mas trailer? Seemed like they wanted to go Bad Santa-ish.
Mozgov might have a second career in Vaudeville. That was a stooge-worthy pratfall
That was pretty awesome… but I’ll take any foul Cavs can get at this point…
Will the hipster beard be for millennials what the mullet was for us gen xers?
i feel like we should be down by 20
JR really looks wild out there… don’t understand why he’s not looking for his threes…
JR looks lost. James Jones looks useless, Tristan looks like he’s carry 82 million dollars worth of coal from the mines.
Wish I could stay up for warriors and Pelicans. Davis might put up and “oh my no he didn’t kind of season”. Can’t wait to see the cavs play the pels
Come on LeBron. You’ve been in the league 13 years. You’ve been to the finals 6 times. You shouldn’t have a problem with concentration here.
Free throws looking rough for Lebron
Bulls getting every call. Thanks a lot, Obama.
Butler just falling down trying to draw fouls now…
Look out Aaron Brooks!
What the hell was that call away from the ball that they pre-empted for the POTUS?
Come on Obama root for the Cavs!
OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!
Missed most of game so far. My boys had an audition for a Christmas carol play. Hope the injured guys shake the rust off. Plus tt getting back to rebounding and playing switch off defense. I’m sure the guys are gassed considering the offseason injuries.
@talkhoops: Cavs -12 in six Tristan Thompson minutes. PREPARE THE PITCHFORKS AND TORCHES!
Tristan has put himself in a really tough position. It will take about 7 or 8 games for him to get up to speed, and those couple weeks will be so rough for him with criticism.
Love needs to be more authoritative down low or face up.
You mean all the times he’s gotten the ball?
This is a bully game. Blatt’s James Jones substitution was a wtf move.
Reggie is right on. Everyone looks so gassed.
Most of lucky they called the foul instead of the travel. Not sure which happened first.
Jesus. Love got hammered.
This is pretty ugly from both teams.
Bulls seemingly getting away with a lot inside…
Get the ball to love, Jesus.
Yeah… lip service so far not materializing about getting him more involved in the offense…
Much better ball movement Cavs. Time to wake up & play!
