Live Thread: Cavs vs. Sixers
2015-11-06Just six games into the regular season (thanks to injury and opportunity) the Cavs have apparently decided to “release the Ninja” on the Philadelphia 76ers in tonight’s matchup at the Q. According to Jason Lloyd at the Akron Beacon Journal, Jared Cunningham (aka Much Danger Ninja) reportedly appears to be in line for his first NBA start. Cunningham was wearing a red starter’s jersey during the team’s morning shoot-around, while Richard Jefferson was back in a bench player’s white jersey. Although, technically, as a ninja… MDN probably should have dressed in all black…
Jefferson started in Wednesday’s win against the Knicks, but he seemed a little out of sorts, getting off to a rough start on his way to nine points on 2-6 shooting (1-5 from three), with four boards and three assists. Most of this might be attributed to the fact that he was tasked with guarding Carmelo Anthony on the other end of the floor (which he did with some degree of success), yet it’s understandable why Coach Blatt would prefer to keep him in his usual role, given how well that’s gone so far this season.
Cunningham is averaging just 4.2 points, and shooting 50 percent from the floor, in about 10 minutes of play per game. He’s been an early sub off of the bench for Blatt, mainly because of his athleticism and his ability to defend well. Clearly, his assertiveness in limited opportunities has already paid dividends.
“I feel comfortable (in the Cavs’ system), it’s just a little bit different,” Cunningham said. “This is the first time I’ve gotten consistent minutes.”
Before finding a home with the Cavs, MDN was the very definition of an NBA journeyman. He’s been with five teams in his four years as a pro, playing in a total of 58 games with the Mavericks, Clippers, Hawks, Kings and now Cavs.
Lloyd got this quote from Cunningham fan and Mavs coach, Rick Carlisle, last month when the Cavs played Dallas in the preseason.
“He has NBA ability, there’s no doubt about it,” Carlisle said. “He has NBA skill, he just needs to find a niche. This is one of those situations where it could work out for him because he’s a terrific shooter, he’s got dynamic athleticism, he can defend and he’s playing with some great players here. He’s playing with the greatest player and oftentimes a situation like that helps guys like him stick around.”
We’ll see if MDN can help the Cavs get off to a faster start than they have in their two previous games. One thing that won’t be slowing them down are the now infamous sleeved jerseys from Wednesday’s game, as the Cavs will return to their sleeveless white uniforms for tonight’s tilt.
The Cavs will also look to continue their run on assists (they’ve averaged 25.8 per game), and of holding their opponents under 45% shooting. The Cavaliers are also limiting teams to 92.4 points per 100 possessions after allowing 104.1 in 2014-15 to rank 20th. That doesn’t bode well for the still winless Sixers squad which is averaging only 88.3 points on 39.9 percent shooting. The Cavs also finished them off on Monday, despite digging themselves a large hole to start. However, Philly has been the only team to hit the century mark against Cleveland, and with a promising front line, they can still be dangerous.
Other things to look for tonight:
- LeBron needs three made field goals to each 9,000 for his career. That would make him just 20th player in league history to reach that number.
- Tristan Thompson leads all NBA reserves in rebounds at 10.2 per game. He’s five offense rebounds shy of passing Phil Hubbard for seventh on the Cavs’ all-time list.
- Mo Williams is averaging 21.5 points on 55 percent shooting over the last two games. He should continue his hot streak against the likes of Isaiah Canaan and T.J. McConnell.
- LeBron hit just his second triple in 18 attempts on Wednesday. Will he keep firing away from deep, or work the ball inside with his post-game?
- The Cavs unleashed “The KRAKEN” against the Knicks… could we see it again tonight?
Game time is 7:30pm (EST), and the game can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio, and heard on 1100 WTAM. So, get your katanas out, Cavs fans… and get ready to flip the switch…
Cavs are experimenting for three quarters and then winning in the fourth.
Damn these 76ers played like their life depended on it!
Sixers are still the only team to score 100+ on the Cavs…
Cavs are missing something right now. They don’t have that angry edge like when Timo, Shump and JR joined last January. I hope they toughen up in the second half of the season when it’s money time.
Well, considering two of those three are out right now (along with Kyrie) and Moz hasn’t played since the third quarter… not too concerned…
Delly back in for D
6 players in double figures, great balance tonight and we had 29 assists on 45 field goals, 10 3 Pointers and 20 fast break points. Solid game all around
God the Nets stink…and the Celtics have their #1 pick. #simmonsorgasm
TT! Bailout J! Would a been a max player if he could hit that last year.
TT nailing the right handed jumpers….
Love to keep seeing that!!
Delly had his work cut out for him tonight with Canaan. It’s not often that happens.
He still managed to get under Canaan’s skin though…
Delly taking a beating tonight.
Man… Delly took a rugby shot that time….
That was like the 3rd hard hit he took tonight.
Delly got jacked in the face and it was an offensive foul?
Delly drawing a silly foul… but also got a Tech on Caanan…
Disagree . Not silly. Not in the penalty. Be aggressive. Piss Canaan off.
Back to back fouls though… and other than the tech, it didn’t really affect Canaan…
I’m a little concerned with how the Cavs are playing against the Sixers.
Really? Why? They are a desperate team trying to get their first win… Cavs are missing their top three guards…
Hate to sound like Cols, but R-E-L-A-X….
That’s why I said I was a “little” concerned. There’s a lot of issues the Cavs are showing both offensively and defensively, thankfully it’s early November and they’re playing the Sixers.
Exactly… just remember last year at this time… nothing to worry about… extended preseason until December or January… plenty of time to work out the kinks…
Absolutely! It’s a long season. I heard this line recently and and it sounds cool, although it may not be completely accurate — “Either you’re getting better or you’re getting worse” — the Cavs team last year this time is not something they should use as a barometer. That is somethings that may make themselves feel better, but it doesn’t make them BE better.
Yeah I agree. I mean the game should be done at the end of the 3rd. On both games.
RJ 6-10 FG, 3 3pointers made, 17 off da bench, coming on strong in da 4th.
We have a good veteran group on the floor: LBJ, Jefferson, Love, Tristan, and Delly.
K-Love playing so weak
My new favorite AC phrase “speeded up”
Take out LeBron.
Richard Jefferson. You complete us.
Or Jeff Richardson…
buh ey ey RJ scoring on da break now man
WOW Another nice play reverse layup
RJ turning back time on the REVERSE!
Really nice bounce pass there by LBJ. RJ is an obvious upgrade from Shawn Marion.
Delly definitely picking it up in the fourth.
LeBron not in chill mode tonight. Meanwhile that was the dozenth blowby against Jefferson. He makes it up with a three and a soft slam from the king.
LOL JEFF RICHARDSON! Thanks AC
RJ with the flush, sweeet scores from the team in this 4th, even though Lebron walked on that pass lol
Details… ;)
The refs owed us one after that last out of bounds call…
WOW WOW WOW!!! Great floor passing… Four pass fast break!
Great ball movement!
Very Sweet Play!!
Bad call, should be Cavs ball.
I think Tristan is the new “Mr. 4th Quarter.”
He was bound to hit
So can the Cavs!!! RJ again!!
Uh, why are the Cavs playing like this again………….
Like what? They’re up by 11?
Le-Iso, no ball movement
How’d you like that last play for ball movement ;)
And… they have 25 assists…
LBJ goes for the steal, but Sixers wind up with the three… although he looks just fine on the jumper on the other end…
Wow They can shoot the 3!!
YES!!! Delly Trey from great feed from Bron!
DELLY!!!!!!!!!!
Need some more Love on the inside… there we go…
Think he’s fine. Charlie horse.
Get the Mustard!!!
Pray it’s not a tear or broken. This is our Year!!
Looked like he was trying to avoid landing on Noel’s foot…
Well, he’s back on the floor… looks like a quad bruise maybe…
Okay he’s back on the court. Gotta be okay.
He is fine, there is nothing there
Gotta hope that’s not serious… bad landing on the knee for Bron…
Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
Uh, oh!
This is scary listening on radio, yuk
Looking like raptors might get their first loss tonight 4 secs left down by 1
LeBron gonna have to bail out the Cavs bench tonight. Wish love was shooting better.
Wish JFJ was shooting better, too.
RJ hasn’t been bad…
Celtics are killing Washington 102-88
President Stevens!!!!11!!
Bet Love doesn’t see the floor in the fourth. Windhorst penning his next Blatt hit piece.
Worst game by Delly this season. Got smoked by Canaan
Yeah, he’s -18… yikes!
Cols gonna have a feast on Delly on the recap.
That’s more like it Bron…
I think AC is broken… he just keeps repeating “They won’t go away…”
He repeats a lot of lines.
You can say that again.
He repeats a lot of lines.
Just wish he would say “Much Danger Ninja” for us…
It will come. It will come.
Down to the wire in Orlando
PHiladelphia is shooting 52%. A lot of easy baskets. 42 points in the paint.
Delly should have taken that baseline drive…
Second time Sixers have run that play…
RJ gaining a ton of new fans
Cavs not messing around with LBJ back on floor to start the fourth…
RJ!!!!!
Cavs have 21 assists though, so they’re still sharing the ball well…
Odd to see both teams shooting 50%…
Terrible end of quarter D. No one aware of the clock.
Damn… yet another bomb at the buzzer for the Sixers…
Damn… What a Canaan!
Cavs have had a bad week, even though they’ve won.
Um… compared to last year at this time, I don’t know how you could say that…
Gawd. The Sixers stole Stauskus from the Kings.
Rookies rarely do well in the NBA. Shouldn’t give up early on a guy. Especially one that shot as well as Stauskas in college. He’ll be a top shooter in the NBA soon.
Meanwhile Ben McLemore sucks.
You mean the guy with D Wade athleticism, but shoots like Ray Allen?
I’m not high on him, and I thought he was a terrible pick for the Kings, but giving him away for nothing is the kind of thing the Kings do. And the fact that they gave him to Philly just fuels the Hinkie legend. #trusttheprocess
Stupid nickname too… Sauce Castillo… smh…
