Live Thread: Cavs vs. Trailblazers (#ReturnOfTheSleeves)
2015-12-08On the heels of their first three game losing streak since the Finals, there are a few things the Cavs can look forward to tonight… a return to the Q where they’ve been 9-1 (vs. just 4-6 on the road), a return of LeBron James after a night off in South Beach, an imminent return of Kyrie and Iman from injury… oh yeah, and also a return of the infamous black sleeved alternate jerseys. The last time (which was also the first time) that the Cavs went with their brand new, poly-blend mini-straightjackets, the King was not amused. After shooting just 4-11 in the first half of the November 4th contest with the Knicks, he went full on LeHulk and ripped the offensive sleeves almost entirely from his body. Though he didn’t wind up shooting much better post-rip, he did manage to rally the Cavs to victory that night, scoring 11 points in the fourth… sleeves flapping behind him as he raced past Knick defenders. We’ll see how long the sleeves survive tonight, although it does seem appropriate that they’d show up against the squad from “Rip City.”
According to LeBron, though, he’s much less concerned with what he wears versus how his team is currently playing…
“Whatever uniform is put in my locker I’ll wear and be ready for the game,” James said following this morning’s shootaround. “The last thing on my mind right now is our uniforms. It’s playing better.”
The Cavs could certainly use a few well played games, and hopefully victories, over their next few games. It’s a relatively light week, with just two games (Portland tonight and @ Orlando on Friday) and only three the following week. Mo Williams is considered probable following an MRI on his left knee after tweaking it against the Heat, although Kevin Love is a game time decision with an illness.
Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers, who many expected to be in complete rebuild mode, are a surprising 9-13 so far this season. They’ve found a serviceable big man rotation to complement their dynamic backcourt duo of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum. They’re coming off a tough loss (90-88) to the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday, but their two guards should warrant plenty of attention from Cavs defenders (Lillard is eighth in the league in scoring, averaging 24.1 points).
Probable lineups: for the Cavs, Matthew Dellavedova, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love, Timofey Mozgov; and for the Blazers, Damian Lillard, C.J. McCollum, Al-Farouq Aminu, Noah Vonleh and Mason Plumlee.
Tipoff is at 7 p.m. (EST), and the game will be shown on Fox Sports Ohio.
I’m predicting a bounce-back game for the Cavs (despite the uniforms and the dangerous backcourt duo of the Blazers), and believe they’ll put this one in the win column… 107-97.
What’s your prediction? And also your over/under on how long the sleeves last?
Let it RIP! And GO CAVS!
It’s hard to believe that it took 15 years to put a hole in the bottom of the basket. Players used to have to get on a ladder after each possession.
How was that not an and 1 for LBJ?
Nice footwork by LeBron. No more fadeaways.
Plumlee looked like he just threw himself into the pile there to get the foul…
Don’t let up now Cavs!
Oh, Jared… that could have been special…
Poor Timo… He’s gonna have a rough year with all this small ball…
Exactly. And that’s why I think that the Cavs are better trading Kaun
Allen Crabbe has a Chia Pet on his head.
He went for Odell Beckham, but didn’t maintain it…
Finally! But to be honest I blame all the laziness from this team up late to Coach Blatt. He is responsible for this team effort on both sides of the court.
I screamed out OHHHHH on da alley oop, I did not expect that
WOW!!!! Way to go Mo! What a high handoff!
Uhm.. Time to bring KLove back in.
That was a sick alley Oop from Mo to TT!
Good god, TT on the oop….why can’t they play like this every game?
Man… the Cavs sure woke the hell up this half!
Delly with a teardrop from heaven…
That was pretty close to a Kraken!
THEEEEEE KRAAAAAKENNNNNNN
The Kraken !!!!
Kraken time!!!!
I wish they had replays for egregious calls like that…
How in the world was that an offensive foul?
That’s a BS call against LeBron.
Wow, that was a bad call…..Lebron pushed, but he got fouled first
If the Cavs keep playing this way I’ll have to resort to jersey complaints.
Kyrie and Shump having a good time…
Veteran foul draw by Delly there.
Heat chuck by LeBron.
Cavs have forced Portland to go bigger… LOVE it!
Lebron heat checks never go in anymore
Did they ever? ;)
Mo in for da offense and Delly fighting on defense on Lillard, nice balance
Man Delly running like a maniac!
Terrible heat check though… bad idea…
Lillard can’t handle Delly’s speed dribble
Why cant the Cavs play this kinda determined defense for atleast 32 minutes a game
RJ does NOT look old. IDK who said it earlier but he is a DRASTIC improvement over the Matrix.
I agree and they shouldn’t be compared other than they were pick ups by Griffin
LBJ with a three! You know they’re going good now!
Cavs staying and going over in the P&R.
That was a tough shot by Mo… as long as he’s hitting them, I can live with his D…
KLove earned the right to play majority of the 4th. Rest him the opening minutes. Lebron must take over to build a cushion until Kev returns.
Best quarter in four games for the wine and gold… Great lineup moves by Blatt…
That was the kind of quarter they should be playing consistently.
Cavs ATTACKING the RACK this quarter!
Drive it RJ!!
JAIL BREAK!!! KLOVE!!!
THE NINJA finally finishes a fast break!
That was a tough finish too
Finish the quarter strong guys. Build some momentum
Klove diving! It
Shoot em underhand Jackie!!!
Argh. RJ, foul harder!
Driving Kevin Love might be might favorite version of Kevin Love… just sayin…
Nice. Kill em on free throws Kev.
I wonder if we will get a JRJ?
You mean JFJ?
I think Mo had a foot on the line…
Nice shot Mo!!!!!!!!
GOTTA make Lillard pay for going inside… can’t do the ticky tack foul…
Yeah, that was a horrible, lazy foul….even Dion was shrieking “AND 1!!” on that one
They need those 3s from Mo….if he hits those, he’s playable
Yep another layup..
Mo comes back in. Can they keep the defensive pressure?
Love taking a beating in this one
The engineer! For three!
Nice comeback Cavs!!!!!
Oh, and the warriors have 102 points with 3:30 left in the third…
Video game…
Video game + cheat codes.
And Stef only has 18 of those… yikes!
Thompson went bananas all over the Pacers.
Yeah, they are smoking the Pacers with Curry in chill mode….Klay had a huge first half, though
Fred: “This has been like a root canal in the third…” I’m assuming for the Blazers…
All of a sudden I like Jefferson now that he’s on our team haha. Used to hate that guy.
Me too… always felt he was overrated… but he’s been a decent complement…
YES! RJ Triple for the LEAD!!
Ninja doing his best Shump impression this quarter…
The Cavs have looked like two different teams in this game. It’s hard to understand.
JR gets zero respect. great strip on Lillard.
So true… JR playing like a man possessed out there on D…
DELLY TREY!! Love the two man game!
