Live Thread: Cavs at Timberwolves
2016-01-08The Cleveland Cavaliers take their five-game winning streak to the Twin Cities tonight as they face the Minnesota Timberwolves for the first time this season. While a contest between the 24-9 Cavaliers and the 12-24 Timberwolves seems like a ho-hum route waiting to happen, a little trade that took place on August 23, 2014 will always make it more than that.
The idea that Andrew Wiggins was too steep a price to pay for Kevin Love has been a common narrative among basketball pundits. There’s no doubt that Wiggins has shown tremendous promise, averaging 20.1 points per game in just his second season. Along with Karl-Anthony Towns, Wiggins gives Minnesota a tremendous duo of young players to build around, complimented by other young prospects such as Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng. But does that mean the Cavaliers made a mistake by trading the former number one overall pick?
Absolutely not. The Cavaliers are trying to win a championship while LeBron James is still in his prime, and the 27 year old Love is still a significantly more effective player than the 20 year old Wiggins at this point. Yes, Wiggins does have the higher scoring average by nearly four points per game, but that’s where it ends. Love has a significant edge in rebounds and assists per game, three-point shooting, PER, and RPM. While RPM isn’t a perfect statistic—what is?—it’s pretty significant that Love’s 5.41 mark is good enough for eleventh in the entire league, while Wiggins is rated 80th among shooting guards alone with a RPM of -4.20. He’s a long way from being a core piece on a contender, let alone a superstar. [Editor’s Note: RAPM over at least a season’s worth of games is superior to partial season RPM (or RAPM).  Over the last couple seasons, Love has posted a RAPM of ~3.2 while Wiggins’ first season netted him a MINUS 3.2]
Still, Wiggins seems to get up for playing against the team that drafted him, averaging 30 points per game against the Cavaliers in two games last season, his highest scoring average against any team. If he does that again, then tonight’s game could be much more of a battle for the Cavaliers than anyone expects. Be sure to tune in tonight at 8:00 on ESPN and share your thoughts on the game here at Cavs: The Blog!
That Mozzy drive looked like it was in slow motion, lol.
Wig still in there… had to get his 30…
I can’t wait for Kobe to retire, so they can stop giving that crappy team national TV games.
Neither can Laker fan…
JR said NYET!!! from the side line
Moz with the REJECTION!
I actually have no problem playing in the 4th Q tonight. Just got everyone back, let’s build some chemistry. No one has played more than 32 minutes, and we’re not on a back to back, and this team obviously enjoys playing together, so let em play!!!
Jefferson is gonna steal cage wrestle the officiating crew after this game.
Shump is such a good defender…
Where do Joey and I collect our 36 billion for the over?
Cavs shooting over 50%, 50%, 90% for the game…
Last Toronto game if I remember right they did 55 50 88 and I said I hope to see that more often. Guess they heard me. ;)
We MDN and Andy!
Shumptastic.big game by him…when Shump hits his outside shots you know its a good game
Shump is going berserk!!
Doing his best to make Blatt take Kyrie out.
James out, Irving still in. George is getting angry here!
Serenity now!!!!!!!!!!!
Like to see Mo come in. It’s time!
This is just silly…
Wiggins is actually -29
LeBron playing just to get a triple double is ricky davis level stupid.
Triple doubles are just a pointless thing that are important to players. Like 10 assists are somehow a much larger achievement than 8 or 9. Just arbitrary nonsense.
Well, it’s significant cause we have 10 fingers.
Nope… Bron and Ky still out there… smh…
Great 10-0 in bout 1,5 minutes
The Cavs’ top three scorers tonight are JR, Love and Shump.
Time for MDN and JFJ and it’s even ok if RJ comes back too.
I think Lue still has some game left.
Game over. Time to play AV, Kaun, Cunningham, Mo, and Lue.
Lol… if Lue gets to play… I want to see the Ukraine Train, Potopenko back out there too!
They should also play Billy, the white Iverson.
Apparently not.
And with that 3 maybe Kyrie is done for the night…
That should just about do it for the starters… right?
JVG must be joking when he says the Texans could go to the Super Bowl.
I heard he put 12 Billion on the Texans to win it all… Hoyer The Destroyer!
Zingis has 24 points and 10 rebounds in26 minutes vs the Spurs. Yeah he sucks.
Wiggins has 28 pts, but is a team worst -19.
Great defensive sequence there !!
Uh- can we see more JR? 19 minutes and 27 points. What is Blatt saving him for? Rest LBJ.
Lebron needs two assists for a triple double.
I’d be cool if LBJ sat the ret of the way…
Amen. Cripes. Sounds like Bron has to hit his nut first.
He’s only played 31 minutes. Think he’s done though.
JVG just said he thinks Blatt is making smart decision to cut rotation down to 8-9 players.
I can’t think of anything more disturbing than DeAndre in a blonde wig… as the “mom” in the Hoopers…
Except for maybe the giant people in the Tamiflu ads…
Whole damn commercial is disturbing, lol.
Shump has a quiet 16 points
Shump-dilly-icious!
God love Mozzy. Fights for the rebound, goes to the floor and ………. tosses it to Minny.
I think Kyrie is pacing himself in this one.
Yeah, no need for him to put the cape on tonight.
argh. Lebron still fading to his left.
We need Kevin Costner to point it out to him… over and over again…
Fred- you know what time it is? MFQ.
Here comes the MFQ!
I really like KAT’s game…
That was a great finish to the quarter from the bench.
great inbounds play for the delly layup, good passing for that KLOVE and IMAN 3 too
And Delly almost stole the inbounds pass too.
Well, the Wolves had their run, but Cavs increase lead to 19 by end of third… hope LBJ is done for night…
After he gets two more assists.
lol… would rather him get another fourth quarter off…
Delly did a great job there.
Loved the layup by Delly and the passing on the almost-slam by Moz there.
Has anyone ever seen two players get triple doubles from the same team at the same game?
I can’t remember seeing it…
Yes… MJ and Pippen in 1989, and then Kidd and Vinsanity in 2007…
http://www.examiner.com/article/nba-teammates-with-triple-doubles-the-same-game
SHUMP-TASTIC!
Great find by Delly… that pass was King-like…
Just like that, Kevin…
He needs lessons from JR in not having a conscience.
Mohammed just bounced right off Mosgov there
Seem like Petrovic and Shabazz really giving TT fits.
really thought would have Mozzy in here by now.
He’s about to check in…
Really wish Love would just shoot the damn ball sometimes…
Sorry. Got a little caught up in #bundyeroticfanfic . Looks like the Cavs got a little sloppy in my absence.
I’m afraid to ask…
The best thing on twitter.
How do the Lakers wind up on national TV twice in two nights?
Kobe fever. Catch it.
Here comes Jefferson. Already has 3 fouls. Shabazz kinda owned him
Wolves have a slight edge in this quarter.
There goes that 20 pt lead.
I never thought I’d be comfortable with pull-up Delly treys… but there it is…
The Aussie Steph.
JVG: Rubio can’t go under the screen. Delly shoots it too well.
Delly Trey!!!!!!!
Hey gotta take off guys… have a great night. O and by the way, EFF SHABAZZZZ!
Have a good one CLF!
Cavs acting like the game was over already… just like they did against the Wiz…
Cavs getting complacent.
LeBron 2 assists shy of triple double.
Someone said it earlier… but Shabazz is the scrub-fuego of the night…
I got you EG… ;)
C’mon on these mistakes Cavs.
Kyrie threw that ball away like a drunk juggler…
Good idea, poor execution.
Time for Kyrie to go after Rubio
Kyrie with some sloppy passes here.
Yeah, they need to clean things up a bit. Don’t give the Wolves any hope.
Circus Kyrie…
KAT, meet the Layup King.
Wig with another three… smh
Never makes that against any other team… smh
