Live Thread: Cavs @ Hawks (#OnTheFly)
2017-03-03The Cavs wing their way to Atlanta tonight on the second stop in their three game flight down the Eastern seaboard. The trip began with a bit of turbulence on Wednesday night in Boston, as the wine & gold took a close loss to the crumb-snatching Celtics, who clipped the Cavs’ conference lead down to three games. However, the outcome was mere inches away from being a very different story, as Deron Williams’ last second, wide open three attempt just missed giving Cleveland the lead and potential victory.
To be fair, Williams had played almost the entire fourth quarter (24 minutes in total) of his very first game as a Cav, despite only expecting to play 10-12 minutes off the bench. It was his first game action in almost two weeks, and only his fourth game back since being sidelined with injury as a Maverick back on January 25th. But, that’s life these days as a new Cavalier… you don’t get much of a chance to acclimate and adjust. Coach Lue just throws you into the mix to see if you can catch up on the fly…
“They really don’t practice here, and they told me that coming in.” — Deron Williams
Another relatively new addition, Kyle Korver, will receive a homecoming of sorts to his old roost, as this will be his first visit back to the team he played for the past 4.5 seasons. The Hawks reportedly have plans to honor Korver before tonight’s game. After a scorching month of February for the sharpshooter, he had some trouble getting open looks against Boston. Hopefully, La Flama Blanca can recapture some of his hot shooting touch against his former team (make sure you check out Mitch’s terrific analysis of what Kyle brings to the team if you haven’t already).
Though the Cavs completed their deal to pick up Andrew Bogut, the Aussie big man won’t be in uniform until Monday night’s game back at the Q against the Heat. The Hawks also won’t have their newest addition, Jose Calderon, available until tomorrow night, but they will have Ersan Illyasova, who has been heating up in his first few games with the Hawks since joining them at the trade deadline.
This is only the second meeting of these two teams this year, and the Cavs owe Atlanta one for handing them the first loss of the season back on Election Night, November 8th in Cleveland. The Hawks are hovering at fifth in the EC (1.5 games behind Toronto), and are at the front end of a six game homestand. I’m sure they’re hoping to avoid the 4-5 spot and a potential third sweep at the hands of the King and all his men. Speaking of LeBron, he notched his seventh triple-double of the season on Wednesday, and was named the EC Player of the Month for February yesterday (his sixth straight year of winning the award for the month of February).
Probable starters:
Cavs
F LeBron James
F Channing Frye
C Tristan Thompson
G Iman Shumpert
G Kyrie Irving
(Coach Ty Lue is sick and missed shootaround, but is reportedly going to still be on the sidelines for tonight’s game)
Hawks
F Thabo Sefolosha
F Paul Millsap
C Dwight Howard
G Kent Bazemore
G Dennis Schroder
Prediction: The Cavs ruffle some feathers and fly past the Hawks, 115-107.
Catch all the action on ESPN starting at 7pm EST… and follow along here at C:tB.
just saw very end of game, like last minute…..thought at first this was close game and back and forth throughout…then looked at box score and saw hawks drop 40+ in fourth quarter hahaha….guess some guys will rest tomorrow’s game…is Bogut ready for tomorrows game or next week?
Reportedly his first game will be Monday at the Q against the Heat…
First game is Monday
Bad way to finish a game after such a great first half. Glad they got the win but this game should had been over in the 3rd.
Lue is horrible at subs/rotations…
I guess LeBron will not play tomorrow. Too many minutes again.
Have you met Ty Lue?
I just hope he gets the night off.
Bogut will probably play 35 minutes on Monday to break him in
Lol
KLove weighs in…

Record win!!!!! What a game. I love this team.
Campy sports a damned fine beard.
TT not too good tonight. Just 5 boards, and we got out rebounded by 10. Need that 20/10 guy back
Lue says he’s got tendonitis… also fewer boards to get with all the threes…
Dwight is a tough guy for him
That was kind of a hot mess.
That was awesome. 3 point record. Easy win.
It was great troll fodder!
Don’t love giving up 42 in the fourth, but man is this offense potent…
Perfect victory. Great play but the coach still gets to chew them out.
He’s prolly too sick to do it… even better, maybe Phil Handy will…
Oooh… that shoulda been continuation…
Lol NBA refs
That’ll be in the 2 minute report
We give up 40 in the 4th quarter. Hard to fathom
42
That’s what gritty teams do???
If we were not gritty the Hawks would have scored 43.
Loving James tonight.
Our defense needs a ton of work. As does our mentality.
Irving and James. There’s no other pair better at the end of games.
Gotta love the grit of this team. They take the Hawks best shot yet keep on scoring.
That’s not grit… unless you’re talking about people’s teeth…
You think the Hawks are that good huh? Interesting.
Embarrassing comments by you now
You don’t tug on Uncle Drew’s cape Umlaut…
Haha.
Down two starters yet have the best offense in NBA since january
Cavs are awesome
Two best closers in the NBA with James and irving
By close you mean able to blow an 18 point lead?
Lol. Left Lizard they were up 19. Got home and they were up 1.
We escape, barring miracle.
Like I posted below, too many times this year 20 point leads in the third which should result in big rest for the starters turn into dogfights, often due to complacent, dumb plays..
“Too many times…” to what end? Do you believe they are going to lose in the playoffs because of this behavior? Why are you getting so frustrated?
Thanks Kevin.
If someone gets hurt playing in a fourth quarter when they should’ve closed out 20 minutes earlier? The Cavs could certainly lose because of. That behaviour.
No but this causes the starters to play way too many minutes.
Who cares? They win.
Mike and Myself, obviously.
Count me in the “cares” side.
Complacency for sure…
They don’t like blowing teams out. It bores them.
Ballgame!
#Kylutch
25 ties our post-season record.
I’d rather the record than win
Looks like you’ll get both…
Hardaway just killed them…
Cavs are so good
Whew! Korver! We needed that.
Epic meltdown. Move the rock.
Was that the record or did it tie the record?
Broke the regular season record (24 Rockets)… tied post season (25 Cavs)
Broke the record… won’t matter if they lose though…

Iso time for us.
One possession game.
James is aw some
Offensive carnage has turned into Defensive carnage…
TT not his usual dominant self against the Hawks tonight…
Again the Cavs not being able to get stops.
All that movement is gone. The King cares not.
The king has 38 points
Exactly, it’s hero ball right now from the Cavs.
Six. Plenty of time.
Time to get some stops
Tied the record! 24
Not sure why Korver is still out there…
Spacing
A little bit of D would go a long way to getting this team more rest…
I mean it’s not like this wasn’t predictable. This is their regular season MO at this point. Get big league turn it into a playground sloppy game for half a quarter, let a team get back in and then fail to put them back down.
Amen. Play more guys. Play harder while you are out there.
Eight. Lue needs to play some more defensive guys. Time to see Shump.
Well 25 points to 8.
Hard to believe the Hawks are back in it
We need to stop fouling. Still time. Lead at 11.
There’s no reason for this to be an 11 point lead at this point… Cavs getting complacent
Tomorrow’s a b2b… wonder if anyone will sit out?
Well, no one has played real hard. James did the first half.
Kyrie back out there…
Is 25 the record for the team (post-season)? What is the league reguglar season mark? 24?
I believe so… I think either the Dubs or Rockets did it this year

No wonder people don’t go to these games. The arena sounds like a damn fun house.
Mark Jones on ESPN asking if Griffin should be the Executive of the Year
Unquestionably!
Franchise record! (not including post season)
RJ 23!!
http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists//lessonsfromarecoveringdoormat/files/2011/12/enchilada.jpg
22!!
Umlaut flops like a Frenchman, not a German…
Schroeder is too quick for anyone we have out there.
Luckily, he can’t shoot…
Amen.
I’ve never seen anyone who does the reverse without the glass as much as RJ.
LeBron not defending anymore.
Before he shut it down, there was this
https://twitter.com/cavs/status/837839374729404417
Deron may get 10 assists tonight.
Bron just 4-8 from the line… literally the only wrinkle for him…
Thihs is going to turn into a game if we aren’t careful.
He didn’t miss that one… lol
Show us what you got DWill2
How did LBJ miss that DWill2 pass?
That was a bad pass from RJ…
Wow… Liggins might even play
Uncle Drew! 21!
