Live Thread: Cavs @ Rockets (#HoustonWeMightStillHaveAProblem)
2017-11-09Tom Hanks is a great actor. He’s been in a lot of movies… many of which he’s been able to save with his performances. Likewise, LeBron James is a great basketball player. He’s been on a lot of teams… many of which he’s been able to save with his performances. Yet, there are always the rare cases when no matter the efforts of one man, great though he may be at his craft, can elevate the supporting cast enough to produce an entertaining or satisfying outcome.
This is to say that, despite the two wins in the past three games by the Cavs to bring some sense of stability to this rocky early ride, the challenges standing in the way of a safe landing at the top of the Eastern Conference still loom large. It took 87 points from LeBron in those two contests (with also possibly Kevin Love’s best game as a Cav in the second one) to navigate the team to victory. And, it’s not like they gave up any less points to the opposition (122 and 119 respectively), while also dropping a clunker that appeared much closer than it was to the lowly Hawks in between.
The obvious issue is defensive. The Cavs have burned points to their opponents like rocket fuel, and when they’re not hitting on all offensive cylinders themselves… it can get ugly in a hurry. Speaking of Rocket fuel, Cleveland arrives in Houston to face possibly their biggest challenge to date in James Harden and his skyrocketing mates. The Rockets are 8-3 to start the young season, doing it mainly without the services of newly acquired banana boat buddy, Chris Paul. Oddly, both teams average the same 109.9 points per game, yet Houston is also giving up 10 points less per game defensively. They still shoot the lights out from the perimeter (a sore spot for the Cavs so far), and are coming off a 137 point performance against one of the stingiest defenses in the League against Utah. And, oh by the way, Harden almost matched LeBron’s season high with 56 of his own in that one.
So, the question will be whether or not the Cavs can do enough to slow down the Rockets from deep, while doing their best to fire off their own shots. Derrick Rose will sit this one out with a sore ankle, and Iman Shumpert takes his place in the starting unit. Not sure if that’s good or bad news. The best news, though, is that this is another nationally televised game… and the Cavs usually fare pretty well in those.
Catch all the action starting at 8pm EST on TNT, and don’t forget to chime in here… Let us know if you think the Cavs will prevail or if we’ve got a problem in Houston.
Crowder should have shot the first time
Iso offense? Is this how they came back? On shoulders of unsustainable green/good mode LBJ. Not a good recipe
Why would you pull up on Capella, Jae?
Bad switch…
Why is Crowder shooting contested 3s?
There was no chance that Crowder shot was going in…
Good drive by JR…
Love with two closeouts resulting in fouls where he is not nimble enoguh to stop. Good god. Houston in penalty at 9:16. Going to be a long quarter. Expect Houston to feast
Both were flops.
Early Jeff Green…
Incapable love d.
Are you just channelling Jason tonight John B?

So many touch fouls on Cavs.
Crowda chowdah!
Here comes the rain. Get your umbrellas. Love gets switched on Gordon in transition, Anderson bricks. Ariza makes love contested threes. Maybe this team knows I am watching
Looked like Love got held… no call
Cavs offense getting dumb.
Kev fell for his own banana in tailpipe trick…
Lol. That call was ridiculous
Not smart to jack threes in transition…
Gordon picking up where he left off…
Don’t love the LeIso as first option
Crazy stat: we score 67 pts with just one off rebound. I guess shooting 62% helps
Bit seriously what was the lineup from 6 minutes to 1 minute? Clearly it worked.
Just realized Shump had 5 assists that half.
So am I the only one who noticed that Shumpert is leading the team in assists right now?
I love Barkley. So dismissive of anything he sees as weak sauce
Shump and Green did awesome on both Gordon and Harden…Cavs need to keep one or other on those two….JR didn’t do much…Love has his chances but not getting calls….Harden has 60% of points from FT line….unreal from a guard and pathetic for the league….if Lebron gets Harden calls he’d score 40/game
and we are doing this all without drose—–just saying
Good riddance
And sadly another 0 pt half from Jae Crowder, who I am trying hard to still like
I have zero doubt we’d be down double digits if Rose had played big minutes…
shump playing another solid game—-stay within yourself young man——hope we don’t come out an lay our”proverbial 3rd/ turd qtr egg “
So did the Cavs have like zero mental miscues on d from like 6 minutes on? Clear Jeff Green kept scoring but I am curious what lineup defensive ly did so well. Didn’t catch the last 5 minutes
It was just focus. Korver started it and everyone else picked up.
Hmm. Well korver is usually in position. Lowe had a piece about him being an underrated defender I think a few years back.
if green plays like this every game…championship
Jeff Green is balling…Lebron getting angry and taking it on Ariza….Harden gets a foul called EVERY time he drives….Eric Gordon is unreal from 3….believe the Cavs just scored 42 in the second quarter….GO CAVS!!

Feels good going into half time without boiling blood in my system.
Amen
Nate might have to buy a Jeff Green jersey…

I just tried ordering one from cavs.com, was told ‘Nate’ just bought the last one…oh well…
Vintage DWade on that pass…
I love that when they foul the Turd, they are really fouling him…
If he’s gonna act like you broke his femur then break his femur!
So best Jeff Green has ever played I think.
Man, if there was a way to bet on this game every few minutes…I would have lost a lot of money.
Lol.
What. A. Quarter.
Best quarter of the season.

Hahahahaaha
Shump! Don’t let Harden go left! Ugh.
That was Green
Oh. Thanks.

LBJ!!! Best dunk I have seen in traffic for awhile feomhim
Gotta make Harden go right.
The defense the second half of this quarter has been revelatory…
LeBron just assaulted the rim!

I must say I am thoroughly enjoying this game. Loving the team’s effort on all the small things.
How quickly things change. What happened? I go out for a smoke and suddenly…
When did Capela start hitting free throws?
This year
Impressive 2nd qtr for Cavs, led by MVP candidate Jeff Green…
Great comeback k. Sparked by Green, and dare I say some shustle
20 points in the quarter!
TOs killing the Rockets…
20 points for Green this Q
Quite the comeback!
Great rally to tie this one…

Nene playing dirty again. Glad they called that.
Although Shump flopped there
Wow… that was actually a great defensive play by Shump but Harden turded his way into another foul…
Gets more calls than Curry now or Iverson back in the day, at least in reg season
The Golden Turd tricks the refs again.

Finger roll!
That shouldn’t be a jump ball.
How is that a jump ball? Tucker just mugged Love…
well at least we are keeping our defensive stats right up there —-this defense is getting rather “offensive “–
Wham with both hands…
The King!
