Live Thread: Cavs @ Spurs
2018-01-23The Cavs are in San Antonio to take on the Spurs. This game is pretty big for Cleveland considering they just had a team meeting filled with lots of drama and finger pointing at…….Kevin Love. Yea, the one that came to the Cavs, gave up shots, has played out of position, become a serviceable defender, averaged near a double-double, had his role jerked around whenever another teammate needed something to change, and actually seemed to give some effort most of the time during this horrendous season.
Tyronn Lue actually defended him. Lue’s comment was in response to the team attacking Love for playing just 3:08 during a loss to the Thunder, where the Cavs gave up 148 points without playing overtime:
“I mean, that’s crazy,” Lue said. “If Kevin was out there we might have given up 170. Who knows, man. We’ve got to be better, got to just stay together. We’re being tested right now. This is when your true character comes out and the character of who you are as a person and as a player. We’ve got to step up and play basketball (Joe Vardon, Cleveland.com).”
My take: Kevin was actually sick. Crazy, I know. What I wished happened though: Love told the team that he was important and they didn’t believe him, so he decided to fake sick, leave the stadium early, and watch the Cavs embarrass themselves. Or, Love had a rap feature he needed to do for an Iman Shumpert track and didn’t want it to be late. He was inspired and just had to rap, so he left the court. Those are absurd takes, but for this team they’re actually believable. This team has almost reached what some people call the Tyson Zone. That’s a zone where no matter how absurd the story is about a person or organization, it is pretty believable.
Now, let’s look at the Spurs. Gregg Popovich had a talk with Tony Parker recently about going to the bench. Tony Parker pretty much replied, “awesome, I’ll help the team and talk about wine with Manu, while I keep the bench warm for my protege, Dejounte Murray.” True story.
In fact, the Spurs have built such a strong culture that even when Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Kawhi Leonard is frustrated with the Spurs, most people think it’s a bogus story.
Some outlets have said this game actually means something for the Spurs since they’re 4-6 in their last ten, have changed starting guards, and had to shutdown their best player to rehab a hamstring that’s been bugging him since before the season. It doesn’t. Let’s look at some keys to the game and see why:
- The Spurs still have the second best defense in the league. The Cavs have the 29th ranked defense by .4 points per 100 possessions. They are 3-7 in their last ten. Cleveland needs to defend if they want a win. In the last ten games, the Spurs have given up 100 points just twice, the Cavs have given up 100 points nine times.
- The Spurs have had random players step up and fill voids. Players are playing above themselves and contributing. Guys with no names. The Cavs, on the other hand, do not. The Spurs aren’t supposed to be in third place considering their best player has only played nine games. No player of meaning has missed significant time for Cleveland. Everyone on the Spurs can beat you, and Cleveland needs to play that way.
- The Spurs work teams in the paint. LaMarcus Aldridge often gets the ball, attracts a double, then whips a pass before screening to help another teammate pop open. And, he gets his. He’s averaging 22.3 points to go with 8.9 boards a night. Kevin Love has a task tonight covering him, which he most likely will considering Pau Gasol is out for the Spurs tonight.
- And, that leads to Cleveland’s defensive schemes. They need to play the Spurs straight up. They are too smart to switch and trap against without being precise. If any Cleveland player ends up in no-man’s land on switches the Spurs will seek the open man out and make the team pay.
I’m not sure the Cavs will pull a win out tonight or even if their meeting to air grievances will mean anything. The team has been complaining all season. This game may just be one more step in their downward spiral. I hope not, but I’m picking the Spurs 124-102.
How do two guys close out on a corner shooter? Do they practice any defense. Got so lucky on that brick 3.
TT not sucking!
Mr. Forth Korver? Anyone?
God I hope so.
His shot being lost is our only point guard hope
His shot has sadly been lost too
I think that is more due to the quality of shots his is getting with Lue’s rotations since mid December rather than his shot itself.
They run two plays for him. Two.
True. Those plays work better with a 3 or 4 shooter scheme though.
Life. Considering the guys who are out for SA winning this game we be a bandaid on an amputated limb, but at least maybe you could stem some of the arterial bleeding.
Cavs should trade for Parker as part of a youth movement.
Wade gets a seeing eye jumper to go.
I think RJ was the glue who brought the team together. I miss him.
You might be onto something here…
Nice point.
i dont miss him , liked him on the bench but he always got lots of min from clueless
Even as a bench warmer he would have brought joy to this team.
Korver had to foul there on the floor.
Thomas was most valuable to the Cavs as a street clothes bench cheerleader…
A LeBron-Wade semi-Kraken
CavsTheTeam crying while it’s a 5 point game on the Spurs in the 3rd. TNT says “A Small Silencer…”
Help us Austin Carr… You’re our only hope.
I really feel bad for that dude during the regular season. I kind of wonder if his doctors might advise him to quit to avoid increased risk of an aneurysm.
I don’t even care about IT all I see is a Cavs team that just continue to allow paint points like crazy. Again the Cavs FO has to do something about it.
Because IT is a traffic cone.
Well IT is on the bench now and they allowed a wide open dunk to Anderson and a wide open jump shot to close the quarter to Mills. But I guess that’s IT’s fault.

4th qtr is IT TIME…
LeBron hit a three!
Eight games is about 7 too many watching IT.
Lol Thomas.
Wowser. So I have admit I haven’t watched too many games since IT came back, but…Calderon is better than him if just for defense and the ability to run an offense/know his role. Even with my extreme dislike of the IT trade, never thought I would say that. This is bad. Not only do we have liabilities on both sides of the ball (TT, IT, JR, Rose, Shump) Lue doesn’t even play the guys that aren’t liabilities.
-Lue
I see you guys talking about offense when clearly the main issue is that the Cavs can’t get defensive stops. Plain and simple.
Defense is the bigger problem, but the offense sucks rocks, too…
That won’t change with IT, JR, TT. So basically they need to outscore the other team.
One clearly affects the other…
hey very simple why – make some easy simple coaching decisions and offense can be amazing like during big win streak, with defense there isnt much we can talk about
and obviously when offense is rolling our d will be substantially better -prob somewhere close to middle of the league
How do you not double team LMA in the paint?
You are right, Nate. These Isaiah flops are so old.
I understand IT is not close to in shape (so why is he killing the Cavs with 30+% usage?), but President Stevens must be the best coach in the world to have him in the MVP conversation last year.
Even when isaiah gets to the rim, he’s not blowing by anyone. Just doesn’t have the step.
Not with this spacing certainly. But you’re right. He is not quick. I never thought he was all that quick with Boston. He has such short strides to begin with. With the injury, he looks like a cartoon character whose legs are moving quick but not going anywhere.

In which Lue plays Gorman.
Hard to shoot with your hand on your head all the time…

Love finally gets a shot!
Feeding Love in the post is a too complicated play
How depressing to hear McHale contrast the Spurs’ handling of LMA trade request with Cavs/Kyrie.
What are JR and Isaiah doing?
Isaiah’s only offense is drawing cheap fouls by falling over.
At this point he is a vet minimum guy. He is a turnover machine, a gunner, not a good passer, and obviously the worst defensive player in the league
IT also doesn’t have very good handles for a guy that size. Dribbles high. Trips himself up and gets off balance easily.
IT can only score on cheap fouls…
Jesus. This Isaiah is DONE
How bad is this going to get? Worst 2 minutes I’ve seen so far.
They have no idea what they are doing on o. We shouldn’t talk about d.
If IT was a free agent right now, would he get more than vet minimum?
God, giving IT 30% usage is a disaster…just brutal…
Trade Isaiah… seriously
He may be untradeable at this point.
IT is not very good. Gets himself into trouble way too easy. As much of a gunner as Ky. Yeesh. How did Boston win with that dude?
Except he’s a worse shooter, cant finish in traffic or with the right hand at all, and has way worse handles. Ugh.
Yeah, all true. I didn’t realize he was this limited as a finisher though.
It’s like it gets worse after halftime…
This team has zero fire…it’s ridiculous…
Oh my JR again
Why is JR on the court?
The Cavs have 7 assists…
AGREE 100% WITH YOU NATE
TOO BAD—TRADING THE WRONG PLAYER
If LeBron leaves I want them to build the team around Love.
If LeBron leaves, Love will ask for a trade if he has any sense.
My tin foil hat says Channing Frye not being in the box score at all on ESPN means change is coming
Or just another day at the office for Lue.
OKLA/ KANSAS DARN GOOD GAME—–WATCHED SOME REAL BASKETBALL WITH REAL SPIRIT / HUSTLE / ENERGY/ “GALVANIZED TEAMWORK “——GOING TO ” TAKE A BREAK ” FROM WATCHING THESE CAVS AND GETTING FRUSTRATED
I am in with the boycott.
Of Gasol, Kawhi, Ginobli were playing tonight, how many points are we down? Over/under 25?
Keep the picks. Try to deal the husks/useless: JR, Shump, TT. Rose & IT are on expirings.
Keep Cedi & Zizic. Fire Lue. Start over next year.
Anyone think TT, Rose, JR, shump, and IT bribed Lue/Colby with 25% of their salaries to bench Frye, Cedi, Calderon and refrain from cutting Rose and shump and trading TT, IT, and JR?
lol ! things are really pointing ion that direction!
Spirit is lacking on this team…
Spurs average just over 100 per game and put up 63 with many reserves.
Maybe they’re waiting for the trades to happen before they start playing.
maybe
That’s my optimistic take.
IT is still killing the Cavs.
IT shouldn’t be playing alongside KLove. I do beleive that IT, Crowder and Love are the shortest PG-PF-C starting combo in the league. To make matter worse, they are not exactly very athletic. Lue is just dumb, very, very dumb.
TNT panel: “didn’t think this Spurs lineup could score 60 in a half”. Cavs: “We’re here to help!”.
Still looking for signs of galvinization…
Wow. Phantom call on TT there.
Parker embarrassing the Cavs
only gave up 63 at the half!
Has love had more than one shot this game?
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/955984701491163136
His rotations are pretty much indefensible. Worse than Blatts, who literally forgot how many minutes guys played and that guys were on the bench.
I think the Kings might score 130 on this team…
They already did, didn’t they?
Lbj shot is insanely flat. Flatter than Crowder
This is just unsustainable… it’s not even basketball…
Cavs gonna give up 60 to SAS B team…
At this point just buyout JR. He is that bad. Golly
I wonder if he is just totally done with no gas left in the tank
Probably part of it. His confidence is also probably permanently shattered b/c of that
Poor JR…
Jesus, JR.
Hot mess
