Live Thread: Cavs @ Magic
2018-02-06The Cavs travel to Orlando to take on the 16-36 Magic. In what has become an all too common theme this season, the Wine & Gold are trying to bounce back from a huge loss. The Rockets lifted off to a 32 victory point on a nationally broadcast game against them Saturday night. There’s really not a whole lot to say about the team at this point.
The Magic aren’t good. The Cavs should, from a roster comparison stand point, easily beat Orlando. The Magic are young, can’t hold leads, and lack a true superstar. And, their best players are sitting this game out. Nikola Vucevic is out with a hand injury and Aaron Gordan is also out with a hamstring injury. Terrence Ross and Jonathan Isaac will miss the game too.
The Cavs will most likely be without Dwyane Wade who is dealing with an illness. Kevin Love is out too.
I usually do some keys to the game, but with how the Cavs have been playing it would boil down to me saying the Cavs actually need to show some effort in a bunch of different ways. Here’s some things I’ve been thinking about the team though:
1. I’m thankful Kevin Love got injured. No, hear me out. Obviously, it’s never good for a player to get injured. In this case though, his injury has saved the Cavs front office from being able to trade him or put his name in trade talks. Love has been supremely professional and involved this season. He might be the lone bright spot, outside of LeBron Jame when he’s engaged, of the starters. When Love comes back, at least he won’t have the idea in his head that the team doesn’t want him.
2.Tyronn Lue shook things up by moving Jae Crowder to the bench and moving Tristan Thompson into the starting lineup a few games ago. Now Love is out and Crowder is back to starting. Lue needs to shake things up again. Essentially, the bench and LeBron should start. So that would be: D. Wade, Kyle Korver, Jeff Green, Cedi Osman or Channing Frye, and LeBron starting. Of those six guys, LeBron is the only one who has blatantly shown no effort through long stretches this season. Of those six guys, LeBron is the only one with a negative net rating of .8. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt though and let him hang out with the real A-squad of the Cavs.
3.Now that it has been announced that Tyronn Lue’s job isn’t at risk, the only way forward for the Cavs is to make a trade in the coming days before the deadline passes.
Cleveland Cavaliers official on Ty Lue: "We are not firing our head coach." ESPN story: https://t.co/wntuLZWZmh

4. It’s painfully obvious through 51 games that Lue cannot fix this team through coaching. Usually after making a statement saying the Cavs must make a trade, I would actually suggest some players they should go after, but this time I’m not. I don’t care who they get or send away and neither should they. Sure, there are better players, mainly the bench guys, they shouldn’t get rid of, but the Cavs are trading to change their attitude. And, let’s be honest: it’s essentially a roll of the dice. Their attitude might not be fixable.
5. If you’re reading this, you’re a true Cavs fan. I’m sorry. I really am. After witnessing what they pulled Saturday, I don’t want to watch anything they do right now.
5. Lastly, take this fact in that Jason Lloyd of the Athletic pointed out in his Saturday coverage of the Rockets’ domination. Outside of the Cavs 18-1 streak during November and December the team is 12-19. That’s about the same win percentage as the Brooklyn Nets.
The Cavs will probably drop this game pretty bad. They have shown they play down to competition all season, and that has given them issues. LeBron isn’t playing well enough to bail them out if they do that tonight. Magic, 121-111.
Was Lue fired in the second quarter? I hope so.
Later all. Thanks for the company in the dark times.
This is shaping up perhaps as one of the most stunning team collapses in decades in the NBA. It could actually be the most stunning ever if Cavs miss the playoffs
I hope LeBron verbally waives his NTC in his post gamer…
Nope!
Pretty dumb on his part…
All joking aside. I hope it’s nothing serious for Lue.
Agreed. Although I would not be surprised if he just couldn’t take snd did a butch davis.
Can we blame him? Watching this team makes me sick, how about you guys?

Just think, President Stevens would be forced to play him right now if Dan Gilbert hadn’t made that disastrous trade…

Really need a pod to hear you guys vent when I’m walking the dog tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow night we’re podding
I guess you’ll be able to talk about the blowout by the Wolves.
Could the Cavs be turning into the Jail-Blazers?
No. Those guys were mostly despicable people. None of these guys are like that. They’re just old, and in Thomas’ case, crappy.
Hm, so those things you said about Derrick Rose in the piece we posted today?
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/961065286601502721
Kevin Love is the MVP.
Man, 2016 was something, amiright?
Cleveland: where 0-16 isn’t even the worst thing happening.

And Calderon just gets minutes in garbage time again. Cannot fathom the stupidity
In a way, I kinda don’t want the Cavs to do anything. This is at least interesting. Like, they’re going to just keep jumping out on teams and see how much of a lead they can lose each night. They’re going for history here.
Lol
AC starting to wonder about their talent… LOL

Can’t wait for LeBron’s remarks…
The IT era will begin in July 2018. I’m ordering his fathead but it’s the size of a magnet.
LOL
Nice.
I can’t remember ever seeing anything like this. It’s kind of shocking when you think about. The players didn’t even act like this with Donald Sterling. This only seems to end two ways – Gilbert selling the team, or Gilbert running the Cavs into the ground for fun and the fans just watching in horror for the next 10 years. Gilbert can’t win this fight. Even if Lebron’s hands are dirty – and make no mistake, they are – Gilbert pushed his chips into the middle of the table and lost. He can’t win this.
The important thing is that CavsDan got over on both Griffin and Lebron…
Napoleon wants a statue.
Magic close on a 73-34 run after being down by 21… amazing
To the Magic no less down several players too.
3 starters: Gordon, Vucevic, Ross.
Wow. How low this season could be?
This is beyond humiliating for James too. Tarnishing his reputation
Another ping pong ball in the hopper!
How come this team went 17 of 18 at one point and then all the sudden they are playing like this. I’ve never seen something like this happened before. But there’s definitely something happening behind the scenes that we don’t know.
So the Cavs will probably lose the next 4 games and I bet there’s still not going to be any changes for this team.
The King is dead. Long live the Cavs.
You stole my recap subtitle LOL
Were the Cavs up by 20 at one point? Looks like they lost by 18.
21 pt lead evaporated by the end of the third quarter.
Just looked it up:
2019 1st to ATL: protected 1-10 in 2019 and 2020.
Gritty effort from the Cavs tonight…
LOL
Gritty – like sand in my sub.
Jesus, put Cedi in for fuck sakes.
It’s too the point where there might be an investigation of throwing games, right? I mean, should the commission get involved?
Interesting point, but I don’t think that’s what is happening. Cavs are just a terrible team right now.
You can’t tell me this team is that bad if they’re trying. They are intentionally letting the other team score.
Nope ImthinkmCavs are that bad
I was thinking the same thing…at least with Blatt they only threw one game…Dan is getting them to throw every game…
How to turn a 21 point lead into an 18 point deficit in less than two quarters…
No shooting on the floor. 4 pts in nearly 10 minutes.
Thomas hasn’t scored since the first quarter. Now a tidy 3/13
Lol…IT…most exciting player in the league…
LOL… when you gather for three seconds for a wide open corner three… and still can’t hit it…
Isaiah Thomas is so bad.
Brooklyn putting up more of a fight against the Rockets than we did.

It’s pretty explainable. The team is quitting on… not the coach… but the owner. The coach might be quitting on the owner, too. This is insane.
How does Ty Lue not bench Lebron. Any self respecting coach would bench the guy if he’s not even going to try. If only to make a statement for himself. How can any job be worth this garbage. Someone else will hire him.
Why won’t LeBron waive his no trade clause? Legacy issue?
Lol
Isaiah.
3 pts in 7+ minutes.
25 second half points. Unbelievable
It’ll be a lot different next season with a team built around IT, with players surounding him hand picked by Dan and Corby…
At least we’ll be in prime position to tank and get the #1 overall pick
Interesting question. What are the protections on the 2019 pick.
Top 5…
I’m not following – we have our own pick next year, right?
Totally forgot we traded it to Atlanta. Yikes!
No sent in Korver trade last year…
I don’t think we have our 2019 first. Could be wrong there.
Hawks have, but it’s top 5 protected
If Lebron leaves and IT is the face of the team, Cavs keep that pick…
LeBron almost accidentally made that three a few minutes ago.
Yeah Tye, I’d be hiding in the locker room too.
On the one hand, shame on him. On the other hand, how much must LBJ hate Gilbert to be willing to just ruin his chance at another MVP, another chance at a title (even if it’s a small one), and disgrace his image like this. It would be less obvious if he took out a billboard saying F Dan Gilbert.
At present, we are the worst team in the league. Bar none.
Exactly.
Thank God. The worst thing that could have happened to the Cavs this game is winning and giving Dan the illusion Thomas is playable.
This team just quit. They just don’t want to compete. Plain and simple.

I think this increases our chances of trading the nets pick, since ours will be higher.
37 point swing in the second half
Unless Lebron ever starts trying, this is the worst team in the NBA…with a bullet…
TT would make a fantastic General…
Jeez the Cavs suck at guarding the strong side.

Dan Gilbert just took the team to Seattle and sold the team to LeBron. LeBron will be the first owner/player in professional sports history. This is all a distraction from The Finals.
Lol. Thomas. Off the backboard
I don’t think I could miss a corner three worse than IT just did…
… And it is back. Game over.
A new rock bottom every game…
So….with a fair chance of a Cavs slip into the bottom half of the 8, it should be noted Detroit are in 9th but are likely to be ascending from here on. PO’s in real jeopardy.
Cavs are not winning another game before the All Star Break…
Man. Kyle cannot buy a call tonight.
Losing to Orlando in a b2b game for them with so many of their best players out will reach a new low….if that is even possible. Wonder if any team has ever went to the Finals and then missed the playoffs the next year? My guess is no.
