Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors, Game 1 (#TryTryAgain)
2018-05-01The Toronto Raptors did not succeed against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 playoffs, losing in six games… so they tried again in the 2017 playoffs… and got swept. 2018 brings another year, and another opportunity to try, try again. Only, this matchup should be different because neither of these teams is really the same as they once were.
The team from the North may still have many recognizable names from their past two iterations, led by an All-Star back court tandem of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, and featuring big men Jonas Valanciunas and Serge Ibaka in their starting five. However, the difference isn’t only in their overhauled bench unit, but also in their overall philosophy of play as a team under head coach Dwayne Casey. The Raps have mostly transformed themselves away from an ISO heavy reliance on their star guards, and have embraced a balanced inside-out attack. They have real gunners on the perimeter, including CJ Miles, Fred VanVleet and Delon Wright, in addition to the already dangerous Lowry. Even DeRozan spent last summer focusing on his three ball with a decent degree of success. Add some length and energy in the form of Pascal Siakam and Jacob Poeltl, and there’s a demonstrable reason why Toronto finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Which leads to another thing that’s different… this being the first time the Raptors have home court advantage over the Cavaliers. That’s because the wine & gold limp across the border, battered and bruised from a roller-coaster season that landed them in the four seed, and led to a harrowingly physical series against the upstart Indiana Pacers. Injuries, roster upheaval and role uncertainty have all plagued the Cavs, requiring LeBron James to put forth a near superhuman effort to carry the team much sooner in these playoffs than anyone expected. Without some timely help here and there from the few veterans populating the Cleveland roster, the Raptors could have very well not even had the opportunity to try and redeem themselves against their biggest stumbling block to the NBA Finals.
So, all should be set up well for Toronto, right? They’ve got LeBron and the Cavs right where they want them, no? And, they’ll have all the fans in The Six screaming for possibly four home games, eh?
Yeah, not so fast. There’s a reason Canadians don’t typically have a high degree of confidence in these Raptors. Because when the pressure is on, they aren’t always the most mentally tough team. Sure, they finally exorcised the demons of playoff Game 1s in the first round against the Wizards (they had lost 10 straight Game 1s before that), but they also still seem to be at their shakiest when playing Cleveland. Even with this new, reconstituted squad, they went just 1-2 against the Cavs in the regular season… with the only win coming during that dark period when Isaiah Thomas started for Cleveland. They lost one of the signature games of the season (for the Cavs anyway) 132-129, when LeBron, missing five teammates and his head coach, scored 35 points with 17 assists and zero turnovers to overcome a 79 point half by the Raptors. During the second half of that game, Toronto reverted back to their old ISO ways as the Cavs applied pressure, and there’s no question Cleveland will look to do that once again.
No word yet on which starting five Ty Lue will incorporate in Game 1… although it does sound like George Hill’s back will allow him to suit up and be available…
Ty Lue wouldn't reveal his starting lineup for Game 1. Tristan Thompson was a hero in Game 7, but Jeff Green was very effective against the Raps in the Cavs' two regular season wins against them when they went small. Lue also said George Hill's back is "good" to go.

One thing for sure, however, if the Cavs hope to maintain their dominance over the Raptors, they will once again need some heroics from LeBron James, as well as solid contributions from their veterans. It would be a bonus to see one of their young guys (Hood, Clarkson, Nance Jr.) have a good series, but if the Cavs can defend the way they did against the Pacers (for most of the first round), they should have at least a decent chance to get back to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Sticking with my non-predictions for the playoffs, but I do think there’s a good possibility the Cavs can steal Game 1, especially if they can put the requisite pressure on the Raps.
Catch all the action on TNT starting at 8pm EST… and, as always, chime in below…
GO CAVS!
Boy love is tissue soft against true bigs. Not sure him at the five is sustainable
We need a C vs Jonas.
Terrible. Foul, kev.
Nice floater.
Get TT in NOW Ty…
LBJ was pissed at that love d. Can’t blame him
klove -50 this game
Take Love out now. Getting crushed by JV
Love CAN’T guard JV!!
Lue just failing to adjust again…
No idea what smith was doing. Completely hijacked that poss
Nice runner by Hill
Nope… back with the same 5…
Wow… Cavs 15-2 on points off of turnovers!
Yep. That probably won’t be there in the second half.
LeBron is still the best player in the world, but I haven’t seen him stay in front of anyone this Playoffs.
Jeff Green explosion mitigates Raps bench advantage. 22 pts for both benches
A hot start to the 3rd would have the Raps shaking in their boots.
I expect the raps to cut down on their sloppy tovs and cleanup their defensive rotations. Cavs will likely have to play better on d to keep up. Hopefully they have a semblance of focus after the half.
If LeBron shot his FTs like he did against Indy, the Cavs would have a one point lead…
Man, I am watching the stadium feed…a few of the Cavs doing some warmup shooting. Love missed 6 in a row from middle distance. Then walked off somewhere.
Lue should start TT at the 5 to begin the second half…
Ante’s warmup shot looks wet…
Don’t you love the Feed from League pass?
Can almost smell the stadium sauce!
Not good. Hope he isn’t broken mentally now
He’s shooting like 26% from midrange in the postseason…that dog won’t hunt…that freaking fluke injury pi$$es me off so much…
Amazing how much more physicality Indy played with. LeBron was constantly pushed and mugged by Bogdanovic when he drove

Im assuming if Love continues to stink maybe nance would work but he has to roll hard and slam it home…no soft layups that Love is trying to do and failing miserably
Best JR and JG have been so far in the playoffs offensively…
Surprised at no Nance in first half…
all about match ups….this may be where Green really shines, Raptors really don’t have anyone to guard him consistently, look for Lebron to go nuts if its still close end of 3rd
This was hilarious…

Love should stick to the bench…just rotate TT and Green and put in zicic if necessary…Love needs few more days off….3 pointers started falling in 2nd quarter….if not for missed FTs Cavs would be winning…Raptors hilarious….you know that VanFleet craziness got in their heads….Cavs gotta fix interior defense….dont think Raps are THAT lights out from 3…literally all their guys are making 3s….that won’t last…start strong 3rd and maybe they take this one
Is this the first half of playoff basketball this year where LeBron wasn’t the Cavs’ leading scorer?
Korver, Green, and Smith hitting shots…. this is good.
Something gets into Jeff Green when he plays the Raptors…
just a better matchup for him….he kinda stinks on D but can do anything on O so it cancels out
Dude was goof on both ends.
Cavs should feel good. Raptors played really sloppy but also broke down a ton on d. Committing too hard on collapsing. That is fine if you do it only off certain guys like Indy. But you can’t commit off JR and Korver. If I were them I would be totally fine with green shooting.
Great quarter, allowing us to dream…just imagine if Cavs take this one. Just imagine the panic.
Within 3. I will take it after that start.
Bron, JR, & Green have been great. Korver & & JC OK. TT & Hood meh. Love & Hill have to do better.
If Love can’t play with force and aggression and make a flipping shot, they have to go with Green…
Love may indeed be sitting a lot and deservedly so
Do you even play Love the second half?
Missed one!

Thought you were slipping. Glad to see this.
Why hasn’t Nance gotten in the game?
Great second quarter! Nice to see some shots fall
Korver shouldn’t have pumped.
Heck of a second quarter by the good guys!
FANTASTIC BALL MOVEMENT AGAIN!
Awful breakdown by the raps on that ok 3.
Kk 3
Do it, EG!
PIPE AGAIN!
This is why I have a hard time slamming Lue. He gets NO consistency from his players
Helps that Toronto’s defensive rotations have been awful compared to Indy.
Great ball movement!!!
Bad foul by hill. You have to know the situation and that the raps are in the bonus. Completely unnecessary full court pressure.
Korver… terrible game plan discipline there on defense. Got suckered.
Monster game by green so far.
Green outplaying Love by 900 miles…
Green x2! Stupid Hill foul.
Snuck flop, Kyle.
Nice flop Kyle (Lowry)
The raptors are going to wish they wore their black shorts.
Great pass!
Don’t poke the bear OG
Green really stepping up so far…
That was a no no no yes midrange step back by JR.
Love leaves and people start playing with confidence. Huh
Toronto mentally weak this quarter…
Green machine!
Some good D at the rim there!
Green Machine!
Down to 6 with Bron 1-5 at the line and Love missing 3 bunnies.
Win the last 3 minutes of the half & we will be in good shape.
When TT does not start, Nance does not get to play. This is bad.
If Cavs can keep it close into the 4th, I think as AC says pressure may break the Raps’ pipes.
Yep. Mental fragility is their biggest hurdle.
Can’t believe the Cavs are only down by 6. LeBron needs to hit those FT’s.
The rotation is so out of whack. Lue is like a chicken with his head cut off.
I honestly can’t figure the guy out. Sometimes he makes ok calls like tt in for game 7. Other times I can’t figure out his rationale for some of his decisions.
The downside to every made Green three is the 6 inevitable misses coming…
I think LeBron really wants to hammer dunk on someone.
VanVleet I would suppose…
Raps can’t feel good about a 6 point lead after all that…
TOJ was right, they’re softer than Charmin.
Green three. Nice. Down to 6. Hard to believe they are only down this much.
