Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Celtics, Game 5 (#BestofThree)
2018-05-23I was tempted to make George Hill the poster child of this Live Thread… mainly because his number is “3” and because when he plays well, he brings out the best in the Cavs. However, since Mike covered G Hill’s effect on the Cavs in depth last week, I settled on a shot of the other crucially important matchup in this deadlocked Conference Finals. Kyle Korver is 16 years older than Jaylen Brown, but he’s been able to match the young Celtic’s energy and hustle over the last two games. Even though Brown wound up leading Boston in scoring (25 points) in Game 4, it took him an inefficient 23 shots to get there. Three of those were blocked by the craftily defensive Korver, who I always forget has good size at 6-7 (kind of like how Ty Lue forgets how old Kyle is).
Now that both teams have held serve at home, the series has effectively been shrunk to a “best of three” scenario… which you no doubt learned on Monday night when it was literally the most used quote by the President Genius Celtics hive mind in the post game pressers. Boston would presumably hold the advantage given that two of the three will be played in the always loud and annoying TD Garden… a place where they boast a 9-0 record in these playoffs. However, it’s never all that wise to bet against LeBron James winning at least one road game in a playoff series… in fact, outside of last year’s Finals, James has won a road playoff game in the other 32 previous series. He is unfortunately 0-3 on the road in Game 5s against the Celtics in his playoff career though, so he’ll look to change that tonight.
For the Cavs to put the first post season blemish on Boston’s home court record, their role players will have to exert even more of the hustle and intensity they put on display during the last two games in Cleveland. It will take more stifling defense, more teeth-rattling screens and more Kyle Korver blocks and floor burns. It will also probably take more threes from all of the Cavs’ gunners. They went just 8-23 from deep in Game 4, but still won by nine. A few more of those go in, and the game is likely not in doubt past the end of the third quarter. Korver went 2-5 from downtown and Brown wound up 2-6. Something tells me whoever can win that particular battle will make the difference tonight.
The rumblings are that President Stevens might switch things up in his starting contingency, and that he might go more defensive early with either Aaron Baynes or Marcus Smart (or both) to begin. Hard to say for sure, since Brad is keeping things close to the vest…
Brad Stevens says he doesn’t reveal lineups at media avail—as opposed to recent years, when he did—because he didn’t know he didn’t have to until before shortly before tip-off.

Ty Lue, on the other hand, will likely stay with what’s been working the last few games with Tristan Thompson in the starting lineup along with LeBron, Kevin Love, George Hill and JR Smith. We’ll see if any adjustments made by the President will force more tinkering by Ty.
Sticking to my non-predictions of playoff games, but I will say that I believe the Cavs will win once in Boston… either tonight or Game 7.
Catch all the action starting at 8:30pm EST on ESPN… and, as always, chime in below with your thoughts…
Jc hammered by baynes.
Too many jumpers. Not enough aggression.
I just don’t get Bron’s passivity…
He does this quite frequently.
Clearly a grab… one so obvious even these refs had to call it…
That’s a shooting foul?! Does he have pictures of these refs with a circus midget?
Korver just 1-4 so far. They’ve come to depend on him so much.
Another empty possession… at least it was an open shot for Korver… gotta knock those down Kyle!
seriously, why is Lue play Green so much? really…. is there one strategic reason to do so? or do we have no other player ? it’s really shameful how bad Green is for us on D… and his stupid attempts at 3…. i don’t mind him going to the basket for a potential layup
He lurves Green.
Cedi or Hood are your non-Green choices.
I know. I’d use Cedi.

Why play the 2nd best performer in playoffs for Cavs in Korver, so few minutes ?
Excellent question. Seriously.
He’s 37?
When I see him, he seems younger than everyone but King. JRSmith and Hill look older and slower. What are you saving Korver for ?
Instead of playing Green, I would easily play Love with two fouls…

James is not doing enough LeBron things…..yet
he tried early Q1 and failed
i trust TT’s FT’s more than Bron or Nance…

does Green know how bad he is? god he’s awful… i guess it’s good thing he knows no shame…
Let ‘s see if Lue can play Green 18 straight minutes again. Bad momentum breaking three
Nance misses both. Damn. 3 empty trips down 8.
Cavs needed to score on a couple of those possessions… Bron too passive for my tastes…
Clarkson with a nice dump off to Nance! Drew the foul!
Nance & Clarkson getting us back in it.
I remember LNJ being a better FT shooter with the Lakers…
That is true of every player that ever comes here. It goes back years. I don’t get it.
COME ON Larry.
At least JC will pass to Larry…. Laker connection
Jeff Green is as useless as tits on a tomcat.
At least tits on a tomcat could get work at a circus.
Useless as tennis shoes on a porpoise…
Damn. Korver needs to cash that. Could be within 3.
Bron needs to shoot more.
JC getting hot when we needed it!
Now he’s just going to ISO three every single time he touches the ball, because he’s an idiot.
CLARKSON THREE AGAIN!!!!!!
Clarkson is good at catch and shoot threes when he has room…not good at too many other things…
Captain Bandaid got his blue shoes on tonight!
Jordan Clarkson. Getting hot for one game to just tempt us all. Resist Lue, REsist!
Nance is a fire starter!
sad that that was what it took to play with any intensity
CLARKSON THREE!!!! But Nance you gotta cut to the rim.
Who doesn’t love them some Jordan Clarkson!
AGAIN!
JC for THREE!!
NANCE WITH THE STUFF!!!!!!! TAKE THAT!!!!
CLARKSON BRINGING THE ENERGY!!
Even ex-Lakers hate Boston.
Nance is awesome!
Morris might have just woken up a giant…
The block! Nance! Way to wake em up, JR!
Junior
Larry!!
Clarkson with a nice defensive play after missing that steal.
Nance is all-world since the T
BLOCKED BY NANCE!
Nance and JC with the hustle on the glass!
Nance!
can’t stand Clarkson…
Dude’s playing his best ball of the offs right now.
JC with some D!
Kover should have been in this game much much earlier…
You can’t put him before Jeff Green!
LeBron dont help up fat knot. Thats too much exertion!
Just grab the damn ball Clarkson.
Lol. Baynes flop.
that Korver 3 was ridiculous
Man, LeBron is tripping over his own feet tonight
Nance fighting got us 4 points there!
Save us Threezus.

The Cavs need to show some fight like Nance just did. Even if the game gets ugly they need to up the physicality on defense.
Nice. Cavs got the better end of it!
Did the refs actually get this right in Boston? My goodness!
this delay could be a good momentum shift for us and rest for LeBron
How about we let Nance and Morris square off? Pretty sure Morris doesn’t want that…
LOL… Rozier with the scratch… fight like a man Scary Terry…
The longer they talk the more worried I get.
Morris is such a fake tough guy.
The NBA will be a better league when both of the Morris trash twins are gone
you couldn’t possibly do any better in showing complete lack of ‘intensity, give a hoot factor, in a key game 5 … no one on Cavs other than Love seems to have shown up… Bron is lost so far
Morris twins are pieces of sh*t…
Love that reaction from Nance, Morris being a punk b—–
