Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls
2021-03-24Its the night you’ve been waiting for. The Cavs take on the NBA’s greatest unheralded player Thaddeus Young. To beat Nate Smith’s NBA spirit animal, the Cavs will have to do it without Collin Sexton, Kevin Love, and Matthew Dellavedova. That’s a tall order. Let’s hope the Cavs are up to the challenge.

Raps made a minor move, sending out a player I’ve never heard of to free a roster spot. Lowry deal incoming……
Nice move by the Clips. I guess dropping to 4th out west (Lakers, Nuggets, Jazz) & having Kawhi bolt spurred them to action.
A real, true PG can make a big difference.
Clips fans are pissed LMFAOOOOO

Sweet Lou back home to Magic City!!!!
Hate to say it, but the Clips need him.
https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1375150570944749568?s=20
interesting, Rondo will start trying again LMFAOOO
Sounds like the Lakers and Heat are trying pretty hard for Lowry, with Lakers refusing to involve THT, to which, if I were the Raps, I’d say FU Lakers. Report is that the Heat are Lowry’s preference, which might make a difference.

Guess I shouldn’t be to surprised by the limited action, the Cavs made their big trade months ago. Still the stupidity of the NBA never fails to amaze me, for what the Bulls gave up to get Vuce they could have landed Gordon and Drummond, considering the number of holes on that team that would have been a far better outcome for them.
IDK about that, Vuc can actually shoot and pass at a pretty high level for a Center.
Think I’d rather have Vuc than Dre/Gordon, especially as a fit with Lavine.
And he can’t anchor a defense, is 30 and has a long injury history. 30 year old massive Cs with injury histories are ‘avoid this guy 101’ in the NBA. Gordon and Lavine are the same age so you can actually hope/expect to get 5-6 years out of the partnership, which is pretty important when you are sending out 2 1st round picks in this deal- they aren’t getting young help through that door easily anytime soon. Oh, and they have a good shooting but poor defending PF who would benefit from having a massive body who rebounds and blocks… Read more »
i think thad’s a pretty good defender and will slot nicely with Vuc. Also Patrick Williams looks to be pretty legit defensively as well as 19/20 year old.
Vuc doesn’t have a “long injury history” either. pretty healthy actually.
Lavine sure, but that was already 3/4 years ago… looks pretty strong and healthy, and now with Vuc, will have to shoulder less load offensively.
agree to disagree Bacon.
Prince, windler, dotson for gary harris and a pick?
sure if you can get a good pick, otherwise no thanks.
One of the denver picks? Top 22 protected or something. Maybe cavs give back a second to even it out?
nah, that’s just re-arranging deck chairs IMO…
Harris sucks and is on a terrible contract. While the same can be said of Prince, he’s still a better shooter, and same with Windler quite frankly.
if you really believe in somebody at the lower end of the first round this year, then maybe??? that’s the only possible justification I can really see.
though on second thought, your move does open up time for Stevens and maybe if you threw in Cedi instead of Windler??? not sure if that/how that all works.
Surprised there is no buzz over Oladipo, but I expect him to get moved between 1430-1500e…
Koby needs to steal Ball from Griffin… and get that FRP for Bledsoe… GET IT DONE KOBY!!!
Murray, Barton, Porter Jr, Gordan, Jokic.
That looks pretty good. Monte Morris and Campazzo (sp) as backup guards. McGee, Millsap, and Green as backup bigs looks good. Backup SF a weak spot, but Gordon and Barton can both play there.
Keeping Barton was good for them…
he’s getting overrated here…. Dozier’s better IMO and has upside.
Trent to Raps surely meams Lowry is moving on. Philly, Lakers, or Heat?
Heat
I think so, too, but there is some noise about the Knicks getting in a three teamer to take contracts for a Lowry to Lakers trade. Please don’t allow Lowry to go to the Lakers.
Lowry to Lakers is the rumor mill, but apparently Lakers said no to trading THT LMFAOOOOO
To hell with the Lakers. “JUST GIVE US YOUR STUFF!!’ entitlement. How do the Lakers even do that deal? Still think for Lowry it’s Heat or nothing.
YUP!!! LMFAOOO
Lakers have salary. KCP. Schroeder. Kuzma. Harrell. They can make it work salary wise.
Theyrr not trading schruder or kuz
Wow. Also, Woj just reported the Sixers got George Hill.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1375126939078434817?s=20
WOAH!!!!!!!!!! Portland traded Gary Trent??????
He’s due to get paid, but I would have kept him…Toronto sells high on Powell…
ahh i see, that makes sense.
But Powell also will want paid. I don’t understand it, really. Unless they had other reasons to want to dump Trent…
win now, Powell is better today.
but yeah, interesting nonetheless.
I think both guys are due to get paid and neither team wants to pay them that much.
Same deal with Ball in NO.
SHOULD be the case with YB here.
Solid move for Philly. Hill chokes in the clutch, though.
George Hill to the Sixers!!!!
Good deal for them, if he’s healthy.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1375126441462009857?s=20
Nuggets just had to give up Harris, RJ Hampton and a first for Gordon. Less than I would have expected, I guess. And I’m not too high on Gordon.
yup it was a net positive trade IMO… Gordon fits what they need more, and Harris contract sucks.
Gordan becomes Jerami Grant. Harris was their best perimeter defender.
Harris’ shot is completely broken though, they need Gordon’s spacing (good catch and shoot guy)
and they have several guys who are performing better than Harris defensively, Dozier is probably the defensive stopper now.
Sounds like the Celtics are still trying to get Terence Ross. They didn’t want to move Smart for Gordon. Magic better hold their necks to the blade for Ross.
Here it is…
https://twitter.com/HarrisonWind/status/1375121587398045697?s=20
I’d take that as that it’s gonna happen. Pretty good pickup for the Nuggets.

Windhorst reported earlier that the two teams vying for Lowry were the Sixers and Lakers. Now it’s reported the Sixers are out. How the hell can the Lakers make that deal?
Correction: The Sixers not necessarily ‘out’, but they feel they aren’t the frontrunner, and are looking at other options. So they may still be trying…
Fournier is an UFA after this year.
Is this Ainge using 2/3s of that $27 mil exception?
Smells like desperation if so.
celtics fans like the move, except if it means they can’t move Kemba.
Aldridge saying lots of talk for Gordon to the Nuggets…but nothing done yet…
Celtics get Fournier for 2 seconds…makes me think Gordon is going elsewhere…
Fournier for 2 seconds is a steal IMO.
Yep…
Likely a rental.
A pundit on twitter said that the Celtics likely feel they can resign him, and intend to…fwiw…
ahh gotcha, still.
Rumor mill says the Pels are wanting to shed salary. Are wanting to attach Bledsoe/Adams (and give picks) in a Ball trade.
Bledsoe + Lonzo = Drummond salary wise. Though NO would need a sweetener (Sexton).
Sexton and Drummond for Ball, Bledsoe, picks, and another player?
I’d do that all day…. Ball and 1st round pick to take on Bledsoe?????!!!!
If the Knicks don’t trade for Drummond, he’s almost definitely getting bought out and going to the Lakers for free. Great job, NBA.
nice move to get Hartenstein I think…. 22 years old and a great defender already.
question is whether he can get more efficient offensively. turnover machine and not a great finisher.
That is a big trade. Lowry, Gordon, and Dipo to go. Maybe Powell, Drummond, and Aldridge. Dre and LA could be buyouts.
Hope the Cavs try to bring McGee back next year.
100% agree.
How the hell did i forget its trade deadline day?
Magic get 2 first rounders for Vucevic – they hit reset once again.
They could deal Gordon and Fournier as well. Ross too if he was not hurt.
Gordon going for sure. If it’s the Celtics, they’d better make them bleed.
Javale McGee!!!! gone and expect Drummond out later today…think that will be it for this team. They will roll with what they have and see what happens. Be shocked if they make any other big moves with the roster.
I could see Cedi getting moved. Prince is tough with that 15 mil next year. We’d have to take some back.
Bulls sick of losing. Vucevic & Aminu for Carter & Otto Porter + 2 firsts. Vuc has 2 years after this left on deal. Otto is expiring.
So:
Garland, Sexton, Okoro, Love, Allen
Delly, Windler, Cedi, LNJ, Hartenstein
Cook, Dotson, Prince, Wade, Drummond
2 way: Thomas, Stevens
Drummond won’t last the week. Cook on his 2nd 10-day. Delly nearing a return. Thimas & Stevens (and Wade) playing well.
McGee to the Nuggets, hate to see him go honestly but hope we are getting something back
Hartenstein and two 2nd round picks…I guess? Just really liked what McGee brought to this team
2nds are a 2027 unprotected and a 2023 protected thru #46.
Not real excited about Hartenstein. If he could impact winning, a winning team would not have traded him. But we do need a backup C, so he’ll get a chance to claim that spot. Still, decent value for McGee.
Thoroughly was entertained by McGee and thought his leadership was great for the team. Going to help out the Nuggets and seems like fair value for him given he is an expiring.
me too…. agree with everybody, brought leadership and hustle to the game.
the young two way guys like thomas and stevens just play hard and smart and its noticeable even with small sample sizes. liked that Garland attempted 3s but he is pretty predictable when driving in a screen/roll with Allen…would like to see him attempt 8-9 threes a game…he has a nice touch and even 40% clip nets around 10points at least. Bulls look like a modge podge of guys with no discernable roles. LaVine is really good and would be a star if on a better team. Cavs should be beating them like this regardless of who they have in… Read more »
Deep dive into Brodric Thomas’ numbers:
Showing a lot of NBA ability on the defensive end. Excellent defender for a rookie, above average steal (1.5%, 57th percentile) and block rate (2.5%, 73rd percentile) so far. Poor rebounder (8% defensive rebound rate, 7th percentile), but a relatively easy area to improve IMO.
Offensively, great passer (22.7 assist ratio, just behind DG and LNJ) and a decent enough jumper (57% TS) that shows potential.
If he can cut down the turnovers and rebound a bit, it would be impossible to keep him off the rotation.
From what little I’ve seen of him, he seems ready to grasp the opportunity and doesn’t seem fazed by the moment, unlike other rookies we’ve seen so far this year. This doesn’t delineate their ceiling of course, but it’s a good sign for the short to medium term.
Very poised for a rookie, that does come with being 24 years old!!! LMFAOOO
Updated EPM:
#46 Allen +2.4
#126 Dre +0.7
#127 LNJ +0.6
#170 McGee -0.2
#214 Sexton -0.9
#225 Wade -1.1
#226 Thomas -1.1
#248 Cedi -1.4
#276 Prince -1.8
#296 DG -2.1
#307 Stevens -2.3
#339 Cook -2.9
#342 Dotson -2.9
#347 Love -3.0
#380 Okoro -3.6
#384 Windler -3.7
EPM uses bayesian priors as does RPM and I think raptor. I suspect Garland’s stagnating in this rating is due to bad or too small sample priors. Based on the ratings you’ve posted, no matter what, he has seemed to hover based on the ratings you’ve posted around -2.0 to -2.4. That appears to be the rookie/sophomore priors bias known in RPM. I have wondered about this for some time. On the one hand EPM seems to match my eye test as the best out of the all in one plus minus regression stats. On the other, it also seems… Read more »
You’re 100% correct, there’s really no difference essentially between Sexton and Garland defensively.
Offensively, Sexton’s a more efficient scorer and better decision maker with the ball (turnovers).
I’m willing to bet there will a massive leap for DG once he cuts down the turnovers and scorers a bit more efficiently.
Also remember, Sexton’s trending in the wrong direction for the last month or so and even more concerning, his year 2 to year 3 growth suggests only marginal improvements in the future.
Cory Joseph going to the Pistons. Had a solid start with SAS, now fourth team in six or seven seasons?
They have to clear playing time for the hali/buddy/fox trio. Joseph is a solid bench guard. Actually would make a great Garland backup.
Would love to see him on the Cavs.
Delon Wright is averaging 10 ppg and is top 10 in steals. I think the Kings think he can play a bit. Not a tank move for them.
Joseph reunites with Casey in Detroit.
OMG the Raptors, LOL!!! Got the yips out of their shooting over the last few games, clearly.
they won me my bet tonight!!! LMFAOOOOO wish i had bet more on them!!!
DG really was really special down the stretch tonight… nearly total command of the game and it felt pretty damn good.
Cavs held the Bulls to 39 points in the 2nd half.

Windler needs some G league time
Too bad g league season over right?
@ Vintage you’re absoltuely correct.
@ DanK, what??? it is????
Oh wow, didn’t realize that
No. Windler needs the minutes.
Thomas is a guard. Windler a 2/3. Maybe even small ball 4 if the matchup is right. Some overlap, but not like for like.
But our G league/undrafted contingent looks pretty strong: Wade, Stevens, Thomas + Delly.
Windler needs to figure out what he can do best and practice that ad naseum…he looks uncomfortable out there and not sure he understands his role or knows what he can do best yet.
11 turnovers….that might be another effect of having a true point guard….
Or two. Or three.
Real glad JB experimented with some lineups tonight and gave minutes to Stevens, Wade, Thomas, etc. All the starters played pretty well too
Thomas = baller. Should get Dotson’s minutes ASAP
true, but it’s really dumb on his part at this point to not be giving steady minutes to Stevens and maybe even Thomas.
Is it crazy to think they could be keeping Sexton out because he’s on the block? I like Sexton a lot but his size is always going to be a liability and you could make an argument for trading high… Koby/Grant up to some weirdo hijinks?
almost no chance… they’re leaking BS left and right to the beat reporters about how he’s “part of the core”.
they absolutely should be shopping him though if they think he wants nothing but a max deal.
So many max deals being given out these days. I’d rather let somebody else wager that money on him. Love the heart. Love the Athletic essay. Love the Nets game. We might be better without him.
yup… all of those things are true. Well, I’d rather keep him, just move him to the bench where he belongs.
How much money would you be OK with the Cavs giving Collin if less than the max?
15k/ year, but he’s getting the max…
err, 15 mill/ year…d’oh…
yeah that’s a fair for both side deal.
overpay, but only slightly, and becomes a steal if he actually does learn how to pass or defend.
I guess it’s wishful thinking on my part that the Cavs would be able to negotiate down if they look at his advanced metrics. To give max money to a guy that’s not even an all star and has clear limitations is crazy to me, no matter how hard of a worker he is.
preach it until we’re blue in the face.
That was exactly the number I had in mind. 4 yrs/60mil
Really, really, really think Sexton is not on the block.
No, he almost certainly isn’t, but I don’t know how you succeed with TWO undersized guards. Gotta have some height/wingspan in the backcourt to have a chance. Mutliple games in playoffs with Sexland would be a defensive bloodbath.
I wish this were true, but I seriously doubt it.
DARIUS GARLAND TEAM HIGH +14!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOO WHAT A WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Celtics lose, Cavs win. Good times.
Thomas nice recognize. Allen great finish
WHAT A PASS THOMAS ALLEN INCREDIBLE FINISH!!!!!!!!!!!
How did Allen flip that in?!?!?!
Nice win for the young guns!!! Maybe some of these undrafted types going to stick
HUGE REBOUND OKORO!!!!!!!!!!!
This one is OVA!
oh no, DG with the missed shot, but they’re managing the clock well.
Oh boy dg. Lavine got hammered what a finish.
How did he make that..
Danger time
It’s just one game, but Cavs look like a much better team without Sexton.
It’s been refreshing.
Damn patrick williams
helluva dunk
Great great pass in a crowded space by Nance
https://twitter.com/jlkocher2/status/1374904722109390850?s=20
Thomas has something.
Not sure what to think of Thomas. He flashes athleticism, and can defend, but there are loads of those guys who never stick in the NBA…
he’s a scorer by nature, if his jumper is legit, he can stick.
WHAT PASSING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DG NANCE ALLEN!!!!!!!!!!!
Carter reminds me of Inspector Todd, Axel Foley’s captain.
Was hoping you would find it Nate!!! Made my night.
DG FOR THREEEEEEEEEEEEE HUGE THREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okoro eith a phenomenal pass to garland!
Celtics lost, may be a great night…
James Dean Wade
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT CALL REF!!!!!!!!!???????????
Why the hell is JB playing buddy buddy with the refs – he should be PO’ed
I’m glad he didn’t get a tech actually LMFAOOOOOOOO
OH NO DG that’s his fifth foul.
THAT WAS A GOALTENDING!!!!!!!!!
Officiating….
THOMAS FOR THREE!!!!! GREAT READ WADE!
