Trifecta: QuickCap, Preview, and Live Thread
2022-01-10Sorry for the lack of a timely recap, the snow storms in Virginia took out power for nearly a week and it’s been a scramble to catch up on the time lost! Some thoughts on the game last night and the game tonight…
1. Mid-season Crisis
The biggest thing that stuck out from the game last night was how much the team misses Ricky Rubio. It’s not hard to think that the guys are all heartbroken for their teammate. The Cavs are 2-4 without Rubio, 2-5 if the New Orleans’ game is included. How the team responds to this adversity will shape the rest of the season.
The Cavs lacked competitiveness (outrebounded 54-42 and that was without Draymond Green) and unselfishness (outassisted 24-21). Ironically, the defense was still incredible with the Warriors shooting 40% from the field and only 23% from three. But Rubio’s leadership void, especially with his experience in big games, is a daunting basketball problem that they have to solve in order to keep their playoff status.
2. A solution to Lauri’s shooting woes?
These are the top five combos of the main rotation bigs: Lauri, Love, JA, and Mobley. The thing that jumps out is that three out of the top four lineups have Lauri playing at the power forward or center positions. It begs the question, “is Lauri at the small forward position the way forward for the best version of the Cavs?” There’s no question Lauri’s shooting this year the worse numbers of his young career. But the big three’s defense is near elite. A thing to watch going forward is if J.B. deploys Lauri at the 4/5 with more regularity to get his shot going.
3. A couple of great quotes from last night
Jarrett Allen on the Warriors outrebounding #Cavs 54-42: "First and foremost, I’m going to take responsibility for that. The offensive rebounds, the rebounding, I should have done better going out there. If anybody else takes the blame, they're just being humble. That’s on me."
— Kelsey Russo (@kelseyyrusso) January 10, 2022
#Cavs J.B. Bickerstaff said tonight's game was a learning experience for them.
"Our message to our guys is, we're good enough. So we're gonna find ourselves in games like this. And we have to be prepared to be more forceful and more determined."

4. Back to back in NoCal
Tonight, the Cavs take on a floundering Sacramento Kings that has fired its head coach and is looking to possibly overhaul their entire roster. It’s the perfect opportunity to erase the bad taste of last night’s beatdown. Darius Garland sounds like a “go” even though he came up gimpy at the end of the game last night.
In a contrast of styles, the Kings play no defense while the Cavs do. If the Cavs can stay gritty on the defensive end, they can win ugly. They may have to given the reality of dead legs on a back to back.
Tip off is scheduled for 10:00PM ET and will be broadcasted on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes, GO CAVS!
2of the next 3 would put us in great position…and is doable as long as JB remembers he has more than 8 players.wade was useless on offense but still acquitted himself well on d and on the boards (zero stats but he made two guys miss and purchased one hustle d board that made a huge diffference). Almost like he needs rhythm minutes to be effective.
Is JB actually Mike Brown in disguise?
Sorry to see Tacko go. But we need guards more right now.
the vultures are swirling:

Kings have to offload some guards. Fox. Heild. Haliburton. Mitchell.
Now Jazz, Spurs & Thunder….
4-2 would be fantastic!
Gobert has been out with COVID. That game may be winnable.
Jazz have lost 3 in a row, including to Detroit
Spurs have been pretty good lately. OKC is b2b.
Holy cow Mobley played 42 minutes in a non-overtime game?! JB getting desperate maybe.
thank god he’s 20 LMFAOOOOO
Definitely need a combo guard soon for this squad. Could Eric Gordon be had?
Sure but there might be better options.
I fon’t like spending capital for a (likely) short term guy. Not until we are legit contenders.
Eric Gordon is probably the skillset we need one offense…i kinda remember him being a sieve on d though. Am I wrong?
You are not wrong – leaves a lot to be desired on the defensive side of the ball. Someone like Terrence Ross could be interesting.

I can’t believe it worked.
great move, Rondo knew exactly what Fox wanted to do!
That seems to be a desperation move cuz DG has back issues. I was actually shocked Barnes didnt get a pass. He was wide open and has hit numerous buzzer beaters
FWIW, the Blazers, without Dame & CJ, gonna beat the Nets, with KD & KI (no Harden).
no easy nights in the NBA!!!
Excellent!!!
Whew!
Scoreless the last 2:30. But held on.
Gritty win. Shorthanded. On road. B2b and 3rd in 4.
2-1 so far on the road trip.
LOVE IT!!!! BUILD SOME GOOD VIBES@!!!!
Great win indeed…and not to be debbie downer…but how are we shorthanded? Or I mean any more short handed than the Kings?
Not more than Sav, but it’s a dog day of January win. I’m taking it and moving on.
Sexton. Rubio. Okoro. That is 3 rotation guys. And all rotational guards. Rondo has been here like 4 days.
Kings are thin at C. Holmes and TT.
I think we are missing more.
yup
I don’t count sexton as making us short anymore. He wasn’t all that helpful when he was around…but missing him at this point doesn’t mean anything. Okoro sure. But every team is missing at least 1 rotation player. Cavs missing rubio as well…and Sac missing Holmes and TT. This was a normal NBA game with both teams as healthy as expected at this point in the year. Not hating the win obviously but we gotta stop being the browns and claiming injuries make a difference. The Grizzlies have dealt with as many injuries as we have and are 5 games… Read more »
DG seems a lot less than 100%

Good OOTO result there.
Well, DG needs to play through here.
JB managed him well tonight.
Good Timeout. Bring this one home.
On a bad cavs team Mobley is a 25 point scorer and we lose a lot of games. His midrange is gonna be so valuable in the 1st round of the playoffs this season
Good TO. Catch our breath. Up 4.
MOBLEY TO ALLEN MAGIC!!!!
Keep attacking.
Hali doing too much.
Mobley fell asleep on Metu. Redeamed on floater.
DG FLOATER BABYYYYYy
DG saving the Cavs
Big. To. Big.
HI LO BIG TO BIG@@
So do NOT tell me Lauri hitting that 3 wasnt a consequence of him getting some rest. jB pmaying Wade a few mins makes such a big difference
Beavis from deep!
We hit the glass, Lauri 3. All tied up. Rage TO.
LAURI CLUTCH GREAT DEFENSE LETS GOOOOOOo
Good D.
CEDI WHAT A FINISH!
Think Cavs have lost this one. Kinda shocked they are playing DG hurt…
Why is Lauri in instead of Stevens?
DG TAKOVER
Playing through clear pain…this is impressive
Dean getting zero respect. Gonna have to bring back Stevens.
Hali just out there hunting
Big bucket DG.
DG THANK YOU!
DG when we needed it
BS. Hali hooked him.
Bad start to the 4th. 8-1 Sac.
Yikes getting bad now
Halliburton was always going to shoot that
Rondon’t.
We have begun to act like he is Rubio. He is not anything like Rubio. Need JB to effing coach
SHOOT THE BALL WADE, WHERES WINDLER????
Buddy giveth. Buddy taketh.
GREAT DEFENSE CEDI!
Gotta get Allen in sooner than later.
Getting nervous
Grwtty rebound Wade. Gonna have to win this ugly.

Less 3s, more 2s.
