CtB Trifecta: Cavs @ Knicks Part 2 (or, Where’s Mobley?)
2023-11-01 Off By Chris FrancisGood evening CtB!
The Cavs were easily dispatched by the New York Knicks 109-91 last night in front of a nationally televised audience, a game that bore a familiar resemblance to the 4-1 beatdown of last year’s playoffs. The Cavs are in the heart of the Big Apple tonight for a back to back rematch that promises to be Nightmare on 4 Pennsylvania Plaza. How did we get here? Let’s figure it out…
1. Where’s Mobley?
The most alarming part of the brand new season is how ineffective Evan Mobley’s been for a supposed “future MVP” player. His scoring efficiency has plumeted (51% TS) and his passing is still not close to good enough for an offensive hub (14.3% assist percentage). He has the worst net rating (-12.4) by far among rotation players.. the next closest is Caris LeVert at -4.3.
There are signs of improvement, mainly his paint protection on defense and rebounding. But he and the Cavs’ coaching staff need to figure out how to get him into an offensive rhythm. If they don’t and DG and JA continue to be out for an extensive period of time, then the Cavs are staring down the barrel of a possible 1-9 start before facing the Portland Trail Blazers a few weeks from now. He’s the new “chosen one,” it’s time for him to show a more serious level of competitiveness, especially in a game where he specifically tried to hype it up:
2. The shooting still stinks
Max Strus, Georges Niang, and “James” Dean Wade are all crapping the bed from three. Thankfully it’s game five of the regular season, so there’s still time for improvement. It’s also an indication that the offense is completely out of sync: they don’t know when they’re getting their shots and they’re not ready to shoot when they do get the ball. Better passing from Mobley and Donovan Mitchell might be an antidote to their offensive struggles? Maybe they’re all cooked or too scared of the moment? They all better figure it out if they want to stop the losing streak.
3. Give me the Summer League Stars
Sam Merrill and Isaiah Mobley should be seeing the court this early in the year with this many injuries. Georges Niang clearly isn’t in playing shape yet and no one outside of Isaac Okoro can make a damn catch and shoot three. Hell let me see the whole Summer League starting lineup out there, they played with a competitive edge that has been non-existent so far this season. Shoutout to Nate for the good idea!
4. A quick word on the Knicks
The Knicks flat out humiliated the Cavs last night, and they didn’t even play all that well shooting only 44% from the field and collecting only 18 assists. They were able to beat the Cavs with good defense and mediocre isolation offense from the trio of Jalen Brunson, RJ Barrett, and Julius Randle. But they clearly play Cleveland with an edge, and the Cavs will have to learn how to beat them if they have any designs of actually being a good team.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:30PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio, Go Cavs!
Pod up!
Jarrett and Darius upgraded to “questionable” for Pacers
damn Vogel just said Cedi made the most important play of the game in their loss to the Spurs, Cedi, Vassell, and Wemby new big 3
good for Cedi, I always liked him. Although he was a -16 in 22:29
C:tb should pitch in and get Nate a Niang jersey.
According to Robert Fenbers, CleveDOTcom, Jellyroll roughed up Randle:
“Georges Niang received his first start with the Cavs and shined in a defensive matchup against Julius Randle. According to NBA.com player tracking matchup data, in 9:54 matchup minutes, Niang held Randle to just four points on 2 of 9 shooting. Overall in 35 minutes, Randle finished with six points on 3 of 15 and 0 of 6 from beyond the arc. In two meetings this season, in 13:02, Niang has limited Randle to 3 of 13 and 1 of 6 from deep.”
I want him to be playable.
Georges or Nate?
Nice find.
Good move by JB to put another vet around Mobley/Okoro
I think some of us had PTSD flashbacks to Anthony Bennett when we see Niang. The small-sample stats suggest Randall’s arm bar doesn’t work as effectively against a barrel-chested defender.
Randle roughed up Randle.
haha
The Bally’s app is working again. Hopefully it’ll work tomorrow night. Anyways if you want to watch last nights game it’s available via the app.
WILL TAKE THE ROAD WIN ———-STILL NEED WORK ON REBOUNDING——THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD 2 MORE JUNK YARD DOGS——- T.T. ——CARIS / WHO I WILL SAY AGAIN/ OUR BEST FR
FREE AGENT SIGNING——NEEDED THAT. “ W” LAST NIGHT. 2-3 IS MUCH BETTER THAN 1-4 GOOD FOR THE TEAM PYSCHE// MORALE 👍👍
celtics going for the nba record in wins, and another title.. i think they run through the regular season and the post-season like a hot knife though grass-fed butter.. probably no $$ to be made betting on this outcome, but i may place a small wager.. i don’t think milwaukee can touch them, even with the dame add
the Mavs also going to go undefeated?
no idea, but nice start.. perhaps they give DEN some sleepless nights
the FlatEarther is not playing due to a foot owie. as soon as he is back, complications will arise.
I think the Celts are going to the finals this year.
Even if/when Porzingas gets hurt, it probably doesn’t matter.

Wow! Just tuning in. Cavs win in NYC!
Double Wow! JellyRoll G leads team in rebounds!
Also known as the JYD winner! 😂
Niang got the junk yard dog award. He’s just stacking those damn body bags!
😂😂😂😂
Cavs are 2-0 on the road and 0-3 at home.
2-0 in NYC lol
love it!!!
BTW, didn’t the AL playoffs just go 7 games with the road team winning every game? Didn’t hear anything about it, and I doubt if its ever been done before.
The Nats/Stros 2019 World Series also featured seven road wins…though we know the Astros brought the trash cans with them…
It was difficult to stay engaged in this one, watching it on the computer w/out sound.
I imagine!
THANK YOU SPIDA CARIS AND MOBLEY
Sweet! Good win. Played hard and Knicks were out of gas at the end of the B-to-B.
After going cold for almost 5 min, we made some big shots to extend the lead and win.. good job!
But we need to stop fouling stupidly.. last 4-5 possessions we have fouled and Knicks went to the line.
Nice to see the foul shots down the stretch.
Niang has the second best +/- of tonight’s starters. He’s on his way to winning over Nate.
Bodybagging the haters!
LETS GO HOMER SIMPSON WITH A JUMPER
Insert funny Homer Simpson gif
