While the Cavs stole home court from the Hawks and jumped out to an early series lead after winning Game 1, 97-89, they head into Game 2 with a great deal of uncertainty regarding without Kyrie Irving due to an aching left knee. Irving missed the team’s morning shootaround, instead spending the time getting a further evaluation on his knee after treatment. The latest news had him getting another MRI on the knee, and he is listed as “questionable” now out for tonight’s game.
“This is obviously one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever dealt with,” Irving said after Game 1. “We do days and days and go out there and it’s nothing like simulating a game so for me, I just have to continue to do what I’ve been doing and do whatever is necessary to put myself out there. I’m all about winning. That’s the only thing that matters.”
Since Kyrie can’t go, LeBron, who himself is dealing with a tender right ankle after twisting it stepping on a sideline cameraman in Game 1, will be taxed with a larger share of the ball-handling duties.
“That means less touches in the paint,” James said. “If one of our ball-handlers is out, I’ve got to handle the ball more along with (Dellavedova). It changes my approach a little bit.”
According to David Blatt, Delly will likely start in Kyrie’s place at the point.
“I’ll be ready to go,” Dellavedova said. “Whatever the team needs.”
What the team may miss more than ball handling though, is the threat of Irving being on the floor, even though injured, as a decoy. No matter how hobbled he may appear, he still requires attention from defenders for his outside shooting. Even in his 27 minutes in Game 1, he chipped in 10 points on 4-10 shooting, including 2-3 from deep, as well as six assists.
Other Cavs will have to step up and help LeBron and J.R. Smith with the scoring load, and the team will look to get more output from Iman Shumpert, Delly and James Jones (who were a combined 1-16 from the floor, and 0-10 from three in Game 1).
The Hawks did not make it through Game 1 unscathed either, as Demarre Carroll, who suffered a sprained left knee and some bruising in the fourth quarter.
Initially, the injury looked much worse than it turned out to be, as he needed crutches to walk after the game on Wednesday night. However, he was back on the floor with the Hawks for shootaround and reportedly even took some shots. The Hawks are listing Carroll as a “game-time decision” for Game 2 tonight, even though his left knee was heavily wrapped, he walked with a limp, and Kent Bazemore said he expects to start in Carroll’s place. Bazemore gives up almost four inches and 50 pounds to the man he’ll be charged with guarding (LBJ), so he might have to take Paul Millsap up on his offer to help guard the King.
“It’s probably next man up for them, too,” James said. “They’ve played with injuries obviously less than we have but that’s not my concern about who is in their lineup. My concern is about who we got and who is going to be suited up for us when it’s time to get ready to go again.”
Despite the injuries on both sides, this is a critical game for both teams. Atlanta has their backs to the wall, and will be fighting hard to avoid an 0-2 deficit going to Cleveland. But, already down one of their big three and potentially missing another, the Cavs sound determined to take advantage of the opportunity to take the Hawks out as quickly as possible.
“We are just as desperate as we were in game one to win this one, as well; so we are going to come out the same way, stop their ability to make plays. We can try to slow them down; we can’t stop them. They’re a great offensive team but we just want to slow them down and do what we need to do on our end,” James said.
The running narrative with Kyrie’s injury issues has been whether or not the Cavs should just shut him down in the hopes that he can get healthier for a potential showdown with the winner of the Golden State/Houston matchup (the Warriors have a 2-0 lead in the series after a close 99-98 victory last night). However, they can’t afford to look past a still dangerous Hawks team and save Irving for a round that may never come if they don’t take care of business.
In other news, guess who’s birthday it is? Your favorite embattled “rookie” Cavs Coach, David Blatt. Ol’ Dave is 56 years young today. I imagine all the guys got together and got him something nice… or at least sang something like this…
“Happy Birth-day to you…
Just in time for Game Two…
We may not have Ky-rie…
But the bench mob will do!”
According to his interviews at shootaround today, here’s what David Blatt wanted for his birthday…
It's #Cavs HC David Blatt's birthday. This is what he would like: A win, you all to be healthy, world peace & solution to high pick-n-roll
— Chris Fedor (@ChrisFedor) May 22, 2015
Health, world peace and a solution to the high pick-n-roll might be asking too much, but let’s hope even if Kyrie can’t go, LBJ and Co. can deliver a win for their birthday coach and head home up 2-0.
What’s your prediction for Game 2?
I hope Horford is okay. I always loved him. So underrated. Hawks are toast now!
These commentators tend to forget we are without 3 starters and its like all the sympathy are on Atlanta , just amazing
Two starters… we just swapped JR Swish to the bench
Clean block
Except for the left hand, dumbass.

DO WE REST LEBRON WITH THE CHANCE YOU GIVE THE HAWKS MOMENTUM OR TRY TO KEEP / BUILD THIS LEAD AND GO UP 2-0 IN THE SERIES
lol…………….
We need to see a Delly to TT alley oop for the 4th quarter lol, reward the big man
I need a cigarette after that quarter. Need to keep it up for 6 minutes then we can go to the prevent.
That was as great of a quarter of Cavs basketball as has ever been played.
True statement…
Lebronis getting everyone great looks and then he can go to the hole and shoot over whoever is on him.
Atlanta blog – yes it’s come to this point:
“I’m just thinking of possible improvements we can make
who’s in free agency? maybe this system will work with some tweaks personnel wise
by Robert Freeman on May 22, 2015 | 10:12 PM reply
Geez. Thompson is crazy good right now.
See?
Seriously they should fined that ref for calling TT’s block a foul.
Man does it feel good to watch such good basketball being played by the good guys for a change. Just enjoying the hell out of this!
dude what was that at the end there…..is LeBron going Rabid Dog on em? Mad Cow?
He is just PUMPED UP!!!
Give LeBron some rest now….. 3 minutes at least.
Yeah CAVS killing em!
Put em in a body bag!
Lucky that shot by Bazemore missed, we always have lapse at the end after a score
JFJ comes to the block party.
LeBron just went NUTS on the board at the end!
Don’t go to the floor against Delly. You’ll get hurt.
Schroder felt he was hot man lol
Shroder BLOCKED!
Wah wah wah. I never wanna see injuries. but cmon, no KI no love
Has any of the announcers mentioned that the Cavs are doing this without Kyrie?
Pretty sure I haven’t hear a single mention…
TT is the new rodman.
Cols is insane… TT is a game changer
Cols wants everyone to be LBJ.
I love TT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did JR come into the game this quarter ?.. I dont think so
oh he just came in
LeBron hitting threes. Hawks are screwed.
My thought exactly.
OUCH for Korver… got his ankle crushed
Korver limping , too drives from Dennis, cant have that
Schroder keeping Hawks from getting blown out…
No. He’s just got his finger in the dike.
German Rondo is killing us!
Haha worst call ever. Unbelievable block.
GREAT BLOCK BY TT—BS CALL BY THE REFS !!
We need to close this quarter good, keep the pressure on
Hawks aren’t in this game… but their fans are. I can’t believe it.
When did TT become a shot blocker!?
TT said recently that he’s learned about protecting the rim from Moz.
JAMES finally hits a big time three!
Tt straight stuffed him. Refs robbed him blind.
Like I said the refs are trying to keep them in the game…….
Gotta close out the quarter.
“That looks like one of the best blocks I’ve seen!!!” Pay the man!!!
Remember when opponents used to get free layups against the Cavs?
TT WITH THE CLEAN BLOCK! CMON! WOWOWOWOW
Clean block from TT, wow , Ball dont lie
That was an AWESOME block… Refs suck…
That was a clean block by TT!
LeBron’s passing this game is insane
TT with the great block!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Delly taking step back threes? What universe are we in?
Too easy for LeBron. Had Shump in the corner and no one else on the ball side, so no help available on D.
Is 4 minutes left in the third quarter too soon to go into the prevent defense? ;)
More:
3 POINT DEFENSE? WE DON’T NEED NO STINKIN’ DEFENSE!
I KNOW THAT’S BAD! LET’S GO HAWKS!!!

I LOVE this! Just great! At least they aren’t going the petty route!
Remember the talk after the last game that the Cavs couldn’t count on JR to go off like that again? Well…
Despite JR’s performance in game one, the Cavs only shot 39% as a team from 3.
Tonight JR is only 1-2 but they’re 11-17 from deep as a team, or 65%.
we are not worthy #witness
I’m really starting to believe that the Cavs should rest Kyrie for the remaining of this series…. I think they can sweep this series.
This defense is just a clinic. Every shot is contested! The Hawks can’t get a decent look.
Yes yes yes. Hopefully Dr. Andrews gave them some guidance today that will help them rest him.
Cavs bench outscoring Hawks 18-12 and this time its not just a JR explosion. Plus our defense is the best in the league? What a season!
CAVS went from the best offense to the best defense.
At the beginning of the year, who would have dreamed we would ever be saying that???
Forget the big three. This is an tough and awesome team. Our guys are winners and are on a mission. Atlanta happy to have a nice season.
Loving this game !!!!!! whooiii glad I stayed home and watched
I wish my 6 year old could have stayed up. He fell asleep fast. These are the kind of games that I will not forget.
Cavs are like a VICE grip on the Hawks right now!!
Really can’t think of an adjustment Hawks can make. The shots are open and falling.
Where you been dude?
Shump is comin for JRs record! hahahaha
Atlanta really pressing on their threes. Can’t take playoff pressure. At home to boot!
Just toying with them now guys.
Lebron with the sweet pass and shumpert finishes
WOOOOOWEEEE that was pretty!
LEBRON just skipping and playing Globetrotters with Shump!
I know. What was the and1 player. Skip to my lou
Shumpert:
Sometimes you feel like a nut, dude!
Cavs are putting to rest the ghost of Jiri Welsch.
What a memory. I knew a guy who insisted he was going to be better than drazen petrovic.
The Cavs defense is just so impressive! I’m really amazed!
There ya go TT get back in your groove
