Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls
2015-10-27LeBron James lost a grueling six game Finals, with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love both unavailable due to injury. In the following weeks, he sat at a pool with Love and decided it would be best for both of them if he re-signed with the Cavs. He then cringed when J.R. Smith opted out of his contract and came back for slightly less money. He even lobbied for the Cavs to re-sign Tristan Thompson using social media. His lobbying was as passive aggressive as a significant other saying, “sure, you can watch this preseason game because it makes you happy, even though it’s completely pointless.” And, he sat on a banana boat with Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. The King did all of those things in just four short months and has to be feeling ready for opening night.
After just 48 minutes of preseason action, and one anti-inflammatory back injection, the King returns with his men to play real NBA basketball against the Chicago Bulls in under eight hours. The game tips off at 8:00 PM in the United Center, and can be seen on TNT.
The Bulls will be trotting out Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler, Tony Snell, Nikola Mirotic, and Pau Gasol. Joakim Noah will be their super in shape sixth man, and Mike Dunleavy will warm the bench after having back surgery this offseason. Rose will be wearing a face mask.
The Cavs are starting Mo Williams, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love, and Timofey Mozgov. Both Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert will not be available for this game.
Staff predictions:
Ben Werth:Â Cavs 110, Bulls 100. Kevin Love starts his All-Star season by humiliating the Bulls overrated frontline. Chicago already misses Thibs.
Nate Smith:Â Cavs 106, Bulls 102. Bulls try to prove something. Kevin Love proves they can’t defend like they did under Thibs.
EvilGenius:Â Cavs 97, Bulls 91. LeBron’s sore back outlasts D-Rose’s broken face as Cavs start out strong on their quest for a championship.
Mike Schreiner:Â Bulls 101, Cavs 96. Lack of time playing together in the preseason hurts them, but it’s nothing to worry about.
Robert Attenweiler:Â Cavs 92, Bulls 86. The rested and mostly reunited Cavs give Chicago a taste of its own defensive-minded medicine, allowing their offense plenty of time to shake the rust off. And there is definitely rust to be shaken.
David Wood:Â Cavs 95, Bulls 88. Love demands a double team at the elbow, and the Cavs are able to hit their open 3s. Matthew Dellavedova accidentally hits D. Rose in the face and the game gets scrappy.
Stuff to watch for this game:
1. Is Tristan Thompson in basketball shape? He just reported to training camp this past Friday after signing a deal worth $82 million over five years.
2. Will LeBron be on a minutes restriction? It’s never good to get shots in your back.
3. How many times does Love touch the ball in the paint? He had 2.9 elbow touches and 4 post touches a game last season. The prior season in Minnesota he had 11.6 elbow touches and 7.4 post touches a night. The team has said they want him to be more than a perimeter threat this season.
4. Is Chicago going to be an offensive minded team this year? Fred Hoiberg is an offensive minded coach, but it will be interesting to see what the Bulls do if they can’t run their offensive sets against the Cavs. Do they keep trying to or do they resort to playing lockdown defense?
5. Can Tony Snell be the quasi LeBron stopper still? During the regular season last year, Snell slowed James dramatically. James must have mistaken Tony for Kawhi Leonard.
Let us know your predictions for the game below.
Mo can fill it up, no doubt.
Mo on Butler is a definite mismatch…
Attacking JR: good. Passing JR: also good, but less good situationally.
Right now Mo looks better than Rose.
If they’re gonna call that garbage, might as well smack him in the face.
You have a lot of rage tonight. Chill mode.
They should smack him in the face on principle alone…
LeBron can go to the rack whenever it seems
Semi-heat check from King?
I don’t love that love only has 10 points. I’m pretty heavily drinking wine so I am not entirely sure what the case is. Can anyone tell me?
Not getting the ball down low. Wasn’t hitting from outside early on…
Cavs need to continue to go inside with the Bulls weak defending front court
Put Lebron at the four and just pound it. Have him crush Mirotic.
Love the low minutes for Lebron, Great spring in that jumper!!!
Did he have a foot over the line the Rest?
I really hate my autocorrect right now.
It was a clear 2, unfortunately.
So now comes “the we haven’t played together line up” and the offense goes crazy.
Totally expected but at what point will Blatt sit LeBron and K Love with another tough game tomorrow?
Angry LeBron on that drive…
I think Blatt hit the button too early… should have left the hot lineup in a little longer, despite the Moore three…
Need Mo to shoot more.
Klove with McDermott on him and they can’t get him the ball.
He and Jefferson both passed up open shots on that last possession.
Need to take TT out for Andy, TT is useless on offense
There’s such a thing as too much motion. Why didn’t RJ just take that 3?
Blah. Bad possession.
That McDermott kid is annoying lol
Bulls have an annoying shooting guard off the bench. Shocking.
Guys gotta know the shot clock is running down…
Andy flying around on D. Suck it, other prominent Cavs blog.
Andy looks terrible.
You’re freaking blind.
What game are you watching?
TT looks terrible for sure… but AV has been the one big bringing energy out there…
Andy is a facilitating all star right now.
That was probably a little too far out for AV…
Love that Blatt starting this quarter with the same dudes…
New ball game to start the fourth.
MO GOTTI!!!
Kyrie and Shump get back, James Jones drops out the rotation.
K Love looks gassed on the side lines.
Good rally to end the quarter. Let’s hope the Cavs can pull this one.
Btw I’ve seen LeBron lay on the court like that 10 years ago.
He used to do it in Miami as well…
If Cavs could hit their free throws, they’d have the lead right now…
Mo is keeping us in the game. Great pickup.
If you look at the +/- it’s Delly.
Great run to close the quarter: Delly/Mo backcourt is solid.
Mo still looks like mini-LeBron. More hair now though.
I’d like to see Delly, Smith, James, Jefferson, Love/Moz to close.
Andy. Delly. Mo. RJ. Bron.
Good close out by Cavs!
Why does the second line run an offensive better than the starters?
Probably because they actually run the offense.
Starters have had almost no practice time together.
They’ve been playing together in the preseason.
Second line has played throughout training camp and preseason games.
I think we can get a few more people to find another way of saying what we’re all saying. Any takers?
Mo totally sold that call.
Crafty vet move…
MoGoTTI is everything right now
Crafty move by Mo!
They look like they woke up coming out of that foul timeout
Cavs making good run without Bron…
Hard to believe the Cavs are within 5 with a chance for 3 or less.
Mo filling it up that time…
Jesus, TT. That’s an awful foul.
Love the extra pass from Mo there…
Need Delly to Close this game. Ain’t gonna get stops with Mo.
@DreKnott: It’s game 1 I won’t freak out, but last stars I saw laying down cuz of there back was Steve Nash and Larry Bird.
I thought it was Kevin Love.
2 of the six Cavalier threes off offensive boards now.
Way to ice that p/r, boys.
RJ for Three!
TT still isn’t boxing out. He’s literally getting paid $82M to do one thing and failing at it.
He probably shouldn’t be playing yet… he’s clearly not in bball shape…
I don’t know how many minutes he’s played tonight, but seems like very few…
11 minutes… 0 pts, 2 rbs, -13
That’s a max level line. (sorry, just getting my snark on)
Nice drive by Delly, but he’s not getting it done on Brooks…
What the hell is JR doing on these drives?
Cavs gonna need to go Thibodeau on the Bulls this game.
Some bad calls against Cavs.
Four fouls on Mirotic!
Great big man passing play with Moz to Love!
Nice finish by Love.
Love Kevin ‘s defense there.
Yuck… Cavs just 3-9 from the line…
Having JR and Mo out there leaves them too exposed defensively in the back court…
Now the defense is bad. And Mo has to figure out he can’t be by Rose like that on the drive. Same call 2 times now.
i get that there is some rust, but come on at least put in the effort
I can’t believe Cleveland was getting five in this. Would totally have bet the Bulls if it wasn’t against my religion.
Ugh! Not fun to watch!
Nobody getting back on defense for Cavs…
Rose just abusing Mo.
JR still shooting like it’s the Finals…
