Live Thread: Cavs vs. Sixers
2015-11-06Just six games into the regular season (thanks to injury and opportunity) the Cavs have apparently decided to “release the Ninja” on the Philadelphia 76ers in tonight’s matchup at the Q. According to Jason Lloyd at the Akron Beacon Journal, Jared Cunningham (aka Much Danger Ninja) reportedly appears to be in line for his first NBA start. Cunningham was wearing a red starter’s jersey during the team’s morning shoot-around, while Richard Jefferson was back in a bench player’s white jersey. Although, technically, as a ninja… MDN probably should have dressed in all black…
Jefferson started in Wednesday’s win against the Knicks, but he seemed a little out of sorts, getting off to a rough start on his way to nine points on 2-6 shooting (1-5 from three), with four boards and three assists. Most of this might be attributed to the fact that he was tasked with guarding Carmelo Anthony on the other end of the floor (which he did with some degree of success), yet it’s understandable why Coach Blatt would prefer to keep him in his usual role, given how well that’s gone so far this season.
Cunningham is averaging just 4.2 points, and shooting 50 percent from the floor, in about 10 minutes of play per game. He’s been an early sub off of the bench for Blatt, mainly because of his athleticism and his ability to defend well. Clearly, his assertiveness in limited opportunities has already paid dividends.
“I feel comfortable (in the Cavs’ system), it’s just a little bit different,” Cunningham said. “This is the first time I’ve gotten consistent minutes.”
Before finding a home with the Cavs, MDN was the very definition of an NBA journeyman. He’s been with five teams in his four years as a pro, playing in a total of 58 games with the Mavericks, Clippers, Hawks, Kings and now Cavs.
Lloyd got this quote from Cunningham fan and Mavs coach, Rick Carlisle, last month when the Cavs played Dallas in the preseason.
“He has NBA ability, there’s no doubt about it,” Carlisle said. “He has NBA skill, he just needs to find a niche. This is one of those situations where it could work out for him because he’s a terrific shooter, he’s got dynamic athleticism, he can defend and he’s playing with some great players here. He’s playing with the greatest player and oftentimes a situation like that helps guys like him stick around.”
We’ll see if MDN can help the Cavs get off to a faster start than they have in their two previous games. One thing that won’t be slowing them down are the now infamous sleeved jerseys from Wednesday’s game, as the Cavs will return to their sleeveless white uniforms for tonight’s tilt.
The Cavs will also look to continue their run on assists (they’ve averaged 25.8 per game), and of holding their opponents under 45% shooting. The Cavaliers are also limiting teams to 92.4 points per 100 possessions after allowing 104.1 in 2014-15 to rank 20th. That doesn’t bode well for the still winless Sixers squad which is averaging only 88.3 points on 39.9 percent shooting. The Cavs also finished them off on Monday, despite digging themselves a large hole to start. However, Philly has been the only team to hit the century mark against Cleveland, and with a promising front line, they can still be dangerous.
Other things to look for tonight:
- LeBron needs three made field goals to each 9,000 for his career. That would make him just 20th player in league history to reach that number.
- Tristan Thompson leads all NBA reserves in rebounds at 10.2 per game. He’s five offense rebounds shy of passing Phil Hubbard for seventh on the Cavs’ all-time list.
- Mo Williams is averaging 21.5 points on 55 percent shooting over the last two games. He should continue his hot streak against the likes of Isaiah Canaan and T.J. McConnell.
- LeBron hit just his second triple in 18 attempts on Wednesday. Will he keep firing away from deep, or work the ball inside with his post-game?
- The Cavs unleashed “The KRAKEN” against the Knicks… could we see it again tonight?
Game time is 7:30pm (EST), and the game can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio, and heard on 1100 WTAM. So, get your katanas out, Cavs fans… and get ready to flip the switch…
Btw EvilGenius Nice Bio on Cunningham. Didn’t get a chance to say before because everyone is jumping in on the game thread. Didn’t realize he played on those teams before.
Thx! Credit to Jason Lloyd though. I get a lot of my facts from his reporting. He is one thorough journalist…
Sovlebton vgxs awesome tonight.
Cavs averaging 26.3 assists per game…really could be 30 but that is up from last year. Super nice to have mo and Delly facilitating so well
Man…not having Lebron for Sunday would be interesting. Seeing a real motion heavy offense run through kevin love could be awesome…or could be Minnesota 2.0.
It’s a damn long season. He should rest it.
Well, most likely they won’t have Stuckey. I will say Paul George is 1/3 of their offense and damn near all their rebounds.
Anyone else watching Warriors nuggets? Green is literally setting lead blocks now. Like a fullback. Refs don’t seem to mind
Also…I want Kenneth faried.
When the refs stopped calling fouls on Green, he went from ‘undersized guy who is always in foul trouble’ to ‘GREATNESS!’
Jon Barry has to be the worst broadcaster. He’s like an angry camp counselor in a bad Adam Sandler movie.
Winslow is looking pretty good tonight…
How is Jon Barry employed?
And why is he complaining about free time outs?
Feel bad for Angry Smurf…
Who was providing the cheap shots this time. Green?
Really nice to see Paul George play. Great player.
I hate the twitter hearts from the regular favs stars
Yeah, when did they switch to that?
About 3 days ago. The explanation was sooo girly.
He has more than a third of the Pacers’ points…
PG-13 looking like a star again…
If the Heat make the playoffs I predict Whiteside getting suspended at some point.
Probably for getting upset w Delly
The Brow having a huge game tonight.
Man… the Pacers and Heat still hate each other… even without LBJ…
Freakin Korver 8 for 8 tonight
Whiteside showing his true colors as he almost gets into it with PG13
Cavs at full health are in a completely different stratosphere than the East. But the Warriors, look even better so far.
WILL TAKE THE WIN TONIGHT –2 STATS TO FOCUS AND IMPROVE ON—ONLY 12 FOUL SHOTS / ATTACK THE RIM MORE –DON’T SETTLE——–17 T.O’S / CUT IN HALF ( OR MORE ) —THAT HAPPENS AND IT BECOMES A 20+ BLOW OUT –GOOD WIN-GO CAVS !!
Glad raptors lost and pulling for a Pelicans win over Hawks.
Wade just got a taste of his own medicine…
Lionel Hollins and Byron Scott having a contest to see who is the worst coach. Byron can’t even win at that. Lionel is worse.
Lakers finally win a game .
We’ll have to check with the league office to see if it counts…it was the Nets, after all.
I know but even so this is the Lakers. Man they are a mess in that locker room. Lou Williams got arrested last night, Kobe taking over practices.
Shell of the once great Showtime….
Ridiculous three by PG-13…
I wish John Barry would go away.
I mean Jon Barry!!!!!
Love the nostalgia of the Hickory unis for Indy… but man, they look strange out there…
Very physical game. Lebron, TT & Delly getting some hard hits. 36pt Bench night. Delly somehow got 11pts. Mo with another sensational shooting night with 8 asst. Lebron and RJ shot the 3 ball pretty good. Love was 2-10 from the 3 Yikes! He had 14 rebs with TT 11.
Bench points were even at 36… RJ cancelled out Canaan with 17 points…
Just seen 76ers bench had 36 as well.
How does Portland have the third best record in the West?
Hoosiers are playing tonight and a DOLT (John Barry) is calling the game.
Guys… Cavs had another 29 assists tonight. The only reason it was even close was that the Sixers shot the ball like crazy (52% from the floor, 44% from deep), and the Cavs turned the ball over a lot (17 times)…
I agree. Hey, the Sixers just played well.
Thank you Griff for getting us Mo and RJ.
RJ really fits more with the bench tho.
He is much more comfortable there. The bench did click better from the last game.
What the heck happened? Had to go for a bit and come back to us barely winning? EG I know last year was tough but the cavs really have been inconsistent this week. Would have liked to see us not need Lebron to score 30 for us to win
They’re still working things out… this is like extended preseason for them…
As Hoopsdogg said… “Cavs are spending three quarters experimenting. And then winning.”
Lebron was just in a groove. As a result, the 30 points kinda happened. He had 13 assists, too.
Also… an inconsistent week last year would have resulted in a 1-2 or even 0-3 week… This year it’s 3-0…
Bad shooting night for KeV.
Good shooting night for LBJ.
So tired pf playing these boring terrible teams……..
Already? We’re only 6 games in… I’m just glad to be watching games that count…
Just win, baby.
Philly always covers the spread on the Cavs… LOL
