Preview/Live Thread: The Finals, Game 7 (#AnythingCanHappen)
2016-06-19
“When you give a team life, give a team confidence, anything can happen in a Game 7.” – Paul Pierce
Way back when the 2015-16 NBA season started… all of 235 days ago, did you imagine it would end up here? Sure, it may not have been all that difficult to predict a rematch between the Cavs and the Warriors, given that they were each the odds-on favorites to capture their respective conferences… but could you have fathomed the historic significance of this one remaining Finals contest? Even as recently as a week ago… were you one of the stalwarts who believed in your heart that the Cavaliers could somehow, someway climb out of the 3-1 hole they had dug to force this seventh and deciding game?
No matter the victor, it will be an ending for the ages. One that will be long remembered in the annals of the sport. If Golden State holds serve at home in Oracle Arena (where they went 39-2 during the season, and are 11-2 in the playoffs), they will finish off arguably the greatest season in League history, cementing their place amongst the all-time elite teams. But, if Cleveland can parlay the momentum they’ve built behind their runaway locomotive of a leader, and rip glory from the jaws of what seemed like certain defeat a week ago, they will be the ones to carve their names into basketball lore. After all, in case you maybe hadn’t heard… no team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the NBA Finals. In fact, only two other teams had ever even forced a Game 7, and none in the last 50 years (the Knicks in 1951 and the Lakers in 1966), since before the ABA/NBA merger.
As Tom indicated in his brilliant piece yesterday… nobody really knows anything about how this will all play out. The patterns that have emerged (or haven’t as the case may be), the storylines, the history, the statistical information… none of it really matters in a Game 7. Everyone will leave everything they have on the court… from the MVPs to the X Factors… from the wiliest vet to the least used role player… to a man they will exhaust themselves in these final 48 minutes to capture a crown. There’s no next game that would require a monitoring of minutes played for guys like LeBron. There’s no next game for which guys like Draymond could be suspended. Win or lose, this is it. For one team, it’s a summer of jubilance… for the other a summer of second-guessing and might-have-beens.
So, which stars will shine brightest? Which MVP will prevail? Will the Splash Brothers break loose and throw cold water on the Cavs’ dreams of a victory parade? Or will LeBron and Kyrie continue to break down the once unbreakable Warrior D to dash the chances of a repeat? Which injury issue will loom larger… Iggy’s ailing back, or Kyrie’s banged up foot? Which missing man on offense will find his shot first, Harrison Barnes or Kevin Love? Who can push the right buttons at the right time… Steve Kerr or Ty Lue? How much of a factor will the refs be… and will Ayesha Curry break Twitter? These questions and so many more will all soon be a part of the amazing history of this game, this series and this season for the record books.
Beyond the game, there’s the question of what this will mean to the history of these two franchises, and their respective fanbases and cities.
If the Warriors find a way to finish things off on their home floor, they would effectively answer any doubters of their greatness. Their legacy would be ensured, and even those that debated the validity of their championship last year through the veil of significant injuries suffered by their opponents in literally every round of the playoffs, would have to tip their collective caps to this team. With 73 wins and a second straight championship, they would have to be considered a dynasty, and the odds-on favorites to do it again next year.
If the Cavaliers pull off the upset that many thought not just improbable, but downright impossible… the rest of the world should be put on notice for the audible roar that will be heard from downtown Cleveland. You know the numbers, so I won’t dwell on them here… but half a century of sports disappointment, bitterness and woe would evaporate in one glorious instant. LeBron James would fulfill his promise he and Lee Jenkins crafted so thoughtfully in the summer of 2014… finally bringing home a championship to Cleveland. The victory parade would not only be epic… it might require multiple days to complete.
I’m posting this early to get the conversation going, so there may still be changes to the lineups on each side. There may be multiple updates as we get closer to game time (8 pm EST), so look out for them. I’m also going to break from my habitual prediction of the winner and final score… not because I’m superstitious, but because, like so many others, I literally have no idea what’s going to happen. In the end, win or lose, I love this team and have been proud to cover it with our team at C:tB.
I will leave you with this… These teams have also had a history of playing on national holidays. Neither Christmas Day nor Martin Luther King Day worked out all that well for the Cavs. But today just happens to be Father’s Day. On a personal note… this is my first Father’s Day without my dad. He was the one who indoctrinated me into Cleveland sports, something I alternately loved and cursed him for over the years since my youth. Even though it’s been 20 years since I lived in Northeastern Ohio, not a day goes by that I don’t think about Cleveland. My dad was alive for the last Indians championship in 1948, and the last Browns title in 1964. He sadly never got to see a Cavalier championship… something I know he desperately wanted. He loved watching LeBron. He loved this team. I hope they win it for all the fathers who would love nothing more than to share a championship with their children. But, if they fall short… I will be comforted by remembering something my own father always said to me after tough losses…
“Son, it only hurts because you care. And, it’s good to care about Cleveland.”
Thanks dad. And thank you to all the fathers on this historic Father’s Day.
GO CAVS!

Hoping that Lue’s strategy was to keep the game close with TT not racking up fouls. Then run him the entire second half. Desperately need his defense and rebounding.
I think Lue’s strategy was to hope Shump wouldn’t suck….he needs to change his strategy…
I think you are right. Cannot come up with another explanation. Actually, that may be why we saw Shump and Mo, too. Could be Big Four for whole second half. In early games of the series, I think Cavs starters got too tired early.
Nate get that jr smith jersey mojo going pls
So frustrating to see the effort out there …wait there… Iman played all of the second quarter, Mo with 4:45 minutes and TT 3,5 minutes and Love 4,5 WTF…unacceptable….no burn for Delly, Frye and TT/Love
This made no sense whatsoever. Cannot fathom Lue’s rationale
Nate Duncan @NateDuncanNBA 5m5 minutes ago
Cavs shot chart. 1/20 outside the paint.
Oops, missed EG posting this below…
I get not playing Delly against Livingston or Barbosa. They have toasted him. But I can’t see Shump blow any more assignments or totally kill the offensive flow. He is a mess. Glad he had that one four point play, but other than that, he has been a disaster. Delly is big enough to do whatever they think Shump is capable of doing.
Well.. we’re “only” down 7. GS is shooting lights out from 3… but we’ve also decided not to defend any three pointers. That needs to be an adjustment. None of our guys have gotten hot on offense. LeBron has willed his way to double digit points. Nobody else is doing much of anything. Kyrie, JR, and Love need to get hot in the second half. This game is there for the taking, we just HAVE to stop shooting ourselves in the foot. Mo Williams can’t continue to play. TT needs more minutes. He’s played 13? Are you kidding me, Lue?… Read more »
we can say steph and Klay haven’t hit much but either has kyrie JR Love or Lebron…everyone capable…think 2nd half Cavs will be bit more relaxed here
This has to change…

That’s unbelievable. Beta blockers all around. Or meditation. Whatever. Calm the heck down, guys.
Defense was poorer second quarter. Offense still struggling. Good news it’s close and cavs are scoring in the paint and gsw is scoring from three. Gotta keep it close and keep attacking the paint. Jumps shots get tougher in a close game second half.
Does anyone get a game 5 feel for this game? They have thrown their best punch in the first half, he have persevered and will strike back harder in the second half.
Sounds good!
Can’t understand why TT played 13 minutes and Shump played 13.
cavs have hit one 3 and i think 5 outside shots and only down 7…they need to start hitting outside shots and playing insane defense and rebound the ball
SOMEBODY PLEASE WAKE UP T.T/ I MEAN BOTH HIM AND DRAY-MOND ARE MAKING THE SAME SALARY
I mean; draymond is wildly underpaid (i still hate him)
To be fair, there wasn’t much TT could do from the bench for most of the second quarter.
Cavs need to defend the 3 like crazy, like da game went the Warriors went 3- something in da second half after they had a strong first half from 3…
JR has killed us in the first half. He had three wide open threes and missed them all. Kevin Love had 2. Meanwhile, Draymond Green , of all people, is 5 for 5. Come on guys.
Is Mo really a better player than Dantay at this point ? Seems like Dantay gave us much better minutes last game…
Forget where I read this, but when Cavs score over 100, they are 15-0 in playoffs. Less than 100 record is much worse.
They ain’t gonna beat thise team by scoring less than 100…
well this is a hot steaming pile of gross. running prevent offense from start of game
Cavs just gotta loosen up. Someone needs to put a whoopee cushion on someone’s seat in the locker room.
Awful shooting first half…only down 7. Lue needs to make adjustments to get people in that will make shots and play hard
And play focued
Ugh…focused
Never would have thought the Cavs would be down if you told me the numbers of the splash brothers. But Draymond is willing this team to victory. It’s freaking sad.
cavs can’t hit 3s and leaving guys wide open for 3s…not sure what happened but they are going back to bad habits here for no reason
Can someone please explain to me how Shumpert and Mo Williams are getting this much burn? This is patently ridiculous
Ty lue took meth before the game
There is no explanation. No sane one, anyway.
Lebron needs to stop with the overpassing.
What.is.ty.lue.doing
Man… I really don’t get this rotational “strategy” by Lue… Mo/Shump backcourt absolutely killed the Cavs that quarter…
This offensive production ain’t gonna cut it…and Curry and Klay haven’t done much (yet)…
That was tough. Cavs played like garbage in that second.
Geez what a mess finish
UNCLE DAN MIGHT MEET TY AT HALF TIME —WTF LINE UP ARE YOU PLAYING —-DO YOU KNOW YOUR JOB MIGHT BE ON THE LINE —AM BAFFLED LIKE THE REST YOU
Lue’s lineups have been insane tonight
Are we really relying on Mo Gotti for defense? ugh
why is Mo in da game? I WANT DELLY
Was it the lack of a training camp for Shump? He was solid last year. This year he looks like everything that has ever gone wrong for the Knicks.
Rumor has been all year that after his contract, he hasn’t been hungry….I believe it…what a waste of 40 mill…
The ever classy Oracle crowd…
Hey a bad play by Shump went favorably.
Where is TT?
I guess Lue doesn’t want to bring a title to Cleveland with Schump still out there…
Wow! Three on Curry!
Man, that is one stupid foul by Curry
On second look, a bad call against him.
Rigged.
#RIGGED
Can’t remember the last time we shot threes so bad
another 3 for Barbosa…. 10-20 3 pointer for GSW… Cavs need to come better
I think someone from Vegas is making the Cavs rotation decisions.
Shump is KILLING us!
He has been freaking terrible…again…
We’re not playing at highest output yet we’re only down 4. We need to start revving up NOW.
Cavs not running an offense or defense right now…
LeBron blocks Barbosa
https://vine.co/v/5BB1BuDLAmD
Man… that last Bray three was so clearly LBJ’s mistake on D…
LeBron on the drive…
https://vine.co/v/5BBJT20tlPW
Don’t let them get any momentum
Lebron needs to shut Green down.
Why isn’t Love or TT in da game for rebounds…. I hate that its Green killing us..like really hate
Wouldn’t mind seeing Dahntay field goal kick Donkey in the nuts when he’s doing his ridiculous flex…
Of all of the Warriors players the Cavs are going to let Draymond “big mouth” Green beat them?
Imagine an aluminum bat hitting bray in the teeth.
Argh. Have to foul Dray harder there. Send him to line.
Green murdering us and we cannot hit a three to save our life! Their threes and our nerves/inability to hit one may be the difference in thus game
cavs letting draymond beat him by himself…pathetic..come on CAVS!!
Needless to,say ourn3 pt shooting is killing us
but we are rarely getting open looks and giving up wide open 3’s giving Green time to even gather… like really ? How bad do you want this game Cavs ?
Seriously, F Bray….why are they letting that jackass have so many gimmes?
Is this really going to be the nut punch finals MVP game?
I mean this guy is a disgrace to the game.
K.LOVE AFTER GOOD START HAS SLOWED SOMEWHT
So, typical klove?
Story of this game so far is Cavs giving up uncontested threes… missing all of theirs… then getting to the line for the old fashioned ones…
Too many Shump minutes. Too many Draymond 3’s. Other than that it’s been a decent half.
hhAhhhhhhhhhh
Why Shump is playing over Jefferson is a total mystery.
Our defensive switching has to be better!
I mean 5 FOR 5 WHAT
Are the Cavs seriously going to let Green beat them.
Anytime someone wants to guard Donkey on those wide open threes… be my guest…
