Live Thread: Cavs @ Spurs
2018-01-23The Cavs are in San Antonio to take on the Spurs. This game is pretty big for Cleveland considering they just had a team meeting filled with lots of drama and finger pointing at…….Kevin Love. Yea, the one that came to the Cavs, gave up shots, has played out of position, become a serviceable defender, averaged near a double-double, had his role jerked around whenever another teammate needed something to change, and actually seemed to give some effort most of the time during this horrendous season.
Tyronn Lue actually defended him. Lue’s comment was in response to the team attacking Love for playing just 3:08 during a loss to the Thunder, where the Cavs gave up 148 points without playing overtime:
“I mean, that’s crazy,” Lue said. “If Kevin was out there we might have given up 170. Who knows, man. We’ve got to be better, got to just stay together. We’re being tested right now. This is when your true character comes out and the character of who you are as a person and as a player. We’ve got to step up and play basketball (Joe Vardon, Cleveland.com).”
My take: Kevin was actually sick. Crazy, I know. What I wished happened though: Love told the team that he was important and they didn’t believe him, so he decided to fake sick, leave the stadium early, and watch the Cavs embarrass themselves. Or, Love had a rap feature he needed to do for an Iman Shumpert track and didn’t want it to be late. He was inspired and just had to rap, so he left the court. Those are absurd takes, but for this team they’re actually believable. This team has almost reached what some people call the Tyson Zone. That’s a zone where no matter how absurd the story is about a person or organization, it is pretty believable.
Now, let’s look at the Spurs. Gregg Popovich had a talk with Tony Parker recently about going to the bench. Tony Parker pretty much replied, “awesome, I’ll help the team and talk about wine with Manu, while I keep the bench warm for my protege, Dejounte Murray.” True story.
In fact, the Spurs have built such a strong culture that even when Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Kawhi Leonard is frustrated with the Spurs, most people think it’s a bogus story.
Some outlets have said this game actually means something for the Spurs since they’re 4-6 in their last ten, have changed starting guards, and had to shutdown their best player to rehab a hamstring that’s been bugging him since before the season. It doesn’t. Let’s look at some keys to the game and see why:
- The Spurs still have the second best defense in the league. The Cavs have the 29th ranked defense by .4 points per 100 possessions. They are 3-7 in their last ten. Cleveland needs to defend if they want a win. In the last ten games, the Spurs have given up 100 points just twice, the Cavs have given up 100 points nine times.
- The Spurs have had random players step up and fill voids. Players are playing above themselves and contributing. Guys with no names. The Cavs, on the other hand, do not. The Spurs aren’t supposed to be in third place considering their best player has only played nine games. No player of meaning has missed significant time for Cleveland. Everyone on the Spurs can beat you, and Cleveland needs to play that way.
- The Spurs work teams in the paint. LaMarcus Aldridge often gets the ball, attracts a double, then whips a pass before screening to help another teammate pop open. And, he gets his. He’s averaging 22.3 points to go with 8.9 boards a night. Kevin Love has a task tonight covering him, which he most likely will considering Pau Gasol is out for the Spurs tonight.
- And, that leads to Cleveland’s defensive schemes. They need to play the Spurs straight up. They are too smart to switch and trap against without being precise. If any Cleveland player ends up in no-man’s land on switches the Spurs will seek the open man out and make the team pay.
I’m not sure the Cavs will pull a win out tonight or even if their meeting to air grievances will mean anything. The team has been complaining all season. This game may just be one more step in their downward spiral. I hope not, but I’m picking the Spurs 124-102.
Well ibguess get ready for heavy personnel changes. Kirby is dealing from a weakened position due to our struggles, but I definitely see the George Hill thing happening. If Korby knows LeBron is unhappy, he goes for assets and not stars and just screws lebron this year cuz dude has tanked the team to his own detriment. He grabs as many 1st round picks as he can for kevin love and TT and just gets fill in big men while we melt out of the playoff picture.
I wish I had any confidence in the Cavs FO. They have a puppet ‘GM’ in over his head who also got depantsed in a classic way by Danny Ainge. (And no, just because some national pundits call it a ‘great trade’ doesn’t make it one. It was a disaster unless the Nets pick pays off in some unlikely fashion)
How many first round picks are you hoping to get for TT?
The Cavs need to add some shooters and a rim protector if possible. I’m sorry for JR but he has to go. Again the only 2 players I would keep would be Lebron and KLove.
I would also stop playing KLove at the 5.
No one will take JR with his contract. Cavs are stuck with him
JR would be rejuvenated in a Kings’ uniform, imo…
The toll of these long playoff runs/3 straight Finals is showing. Other than Lebroninator, these players are human. KLove. JR. Frye. TT. They are just tired bodies. Crowder is emotionally broken. Rose, IT, Shumpert are all physically broken. This was inevitable. Now we have to watch Boston squad of young studs play just to rub it in. Ugh.
Cavs just took 72 shots, the Spurs took 96. Turnovers and rebounding were the culprits as usual.
But ‘lol like these games matter’, right? People here don’t say that, but you see no end to this idiocy on other forums.
The wins themselves don’t necessarily if they are competitive or play well against good teams. However, what matters is how they look and why they look the way the do, and whether they look that way because of systemic reasons or other coaching decisions, effort, or straight up personnel issues. One of those is fixable. The other two are not without changes.
Cavs refusing to play shooters with Lebron is stupid and gross. Also, former shooters like JR Smith.
I agree.
I don’t think LBJ is enough to carry this team anymore if he isn’t shooting like he was at the beginning of the season, which I think we all realistically expected to fall back to earth given his career. Unfortunate because he probably knows this too.
Seriously, where has the real JR swish gone?
And KK too.
when kk is by far only shooter on floor its very hard to get looks , frye and him together was a beauty
And Frye will be gone in the Hill deal. A key player in going 18-1 and Lue totally mismanaged him
whereve u been for last 2 years
Wow. Just wow. Watching a group of youngnplayers develop makes losses somewhat palatable. Watching this team turn into the garnet and pierce Brooklyn nets is freaking torture
Ooof. While LBJ is still better than those two combined were at that point, the comparison is horrifyingly similar.
Wow Scotch, that comparison is brutally on point.
ty lue why your rotations so bad???????
start calderon, move IT to bench
permabench JR, start cedi
permabench TT, play frye
enjoy a few wins
keep job
yes do that now we get trip to finals without a doublt
All that is worth a try. I bet at least JR would welcome a reduced role the way he’s played this season. Give him a chance to regroup mentally and physically.
I endorse this.
Except I wouldn’t permabench JR… I think he’s still salvageable. They need to do the Shump/George Hill deal IMO.
This would be far better than what they are actually doing.
this website/ blog ks amazing , and is only decent coverage and smart people commenting ive seen anywhere on internet
What a terrible game to detract from James surpassing 30000 pts too
no driving lanes for lebron wade or green cause we got lue keeping 1 -2 of the useless players on floor at all times= jr tt shump rose
Thunder sneaking home against Nets?
Who’s got the recap on this one? I think we’d all be okay with a dumpster fire GIF in place of an article.
Agree. It’s really too much to ask of the CtBers to keep documenting these…games.
I would just post a picture of that shipwreck. The team’s play isn’t worth the writing effort
Yup. No need to recap it. I’ll take a pic of my dogs’ morning dump and email it to CtB. Just use that.
That, however, would insinuate good “movement”…. ;)
lol
I now don’t see how this team gets better with the personnel that Lue plays. Either they need a coaching change and bench guys who will throw fits if they don’t play, or they need get new players.
To me they need both.
Probably. I have given Lue the benefit of the doubt on rotations, but there really is no excuse for what he has done in the last month.
What’s amazing is that despite the mini comeback… this game never really felt in doubt after halftime…
Agreed… hardly watched it.
The only guys I wouldn’t trade from the Cavs would be LeBron and KLove. Is like the Cavs need a full restart.
I’m not lying when I say I would trade LeBron in a heartbeat. Thanks for the ring but your bs drama and lack of true leadership has led us here.
Thought they might come out with fight this game, but it was just surrender…Lue can’t survive this…
IT literally can’t stay on his feet he has such bad balance. He seems like he has a crazy Michael phelps like torso with the baby legs. I am not making fun. That is what his proportions look like to me which make him somehow top heavy with a high center of gravity. Weird.
It may be partly the lingering effects of the injury. Core/quads/etc. may not be back to normal. It looks like his walking gait is still messed up.
Which may leave the door open for his play to improve as he recovers further. But I think that’s over a longer time frame than the rest of this season.
Then he shouldn’t be playing. The cavs should of insisted on him rehabbing longer. His contract and attitude be damned.
I agree. But they’re in a position where they 1) can try to get something out of him, or 2) sit him and tell the world they got fleeced in the trade.
If they can’t trade him, sit him. If they sit him, they will play much better. Better to acknowledge the gaping hole flooding the Titanic and do something about your mistake than to allow the ship to sink while pretending everything is peaches and cream.
Start the slow clap…
For the first time, I think Lue may be gone soon…but there will be no Fizdale, it’d be Larry Drew or some other assistant…
gotta love pops coaching on defending lebron , u
hes unreal
Bron’s new logo…
Time to go take a shump… G’night guys and gals.
IT was going to take that three. Can’t backdoor anyone because he is too short.
JR is broke.
Remember JR for President? Wasn’t that long ago.
Wrong. He’s PAID. That is the problem!
Are those awful individual plays IT because you trusted each other more in Boston?
IT will be a good fit on the Kings…
Looking at the schedule… I don’t know if Cavs have another win in them this month… Maybe one against the Pistons, but I don’t know…
Cavs will be closer to the 8th seed than the 1 seed.
With this team right now, it’s not a playoff team. We’ll have to see what team it is after trades…
JR is working on an 0-fer tonight.
Yet he played 27 minutes
Wow… utterly pathetic effort. No heart. I have to admit I was dead wrong about IT. It seems he’s much better suited on this team as a 6th man than starter. Lue’s a moron for keeping Calderon, Frye, and Osman on the bench. Calderon and Frye would help the Cavs’ pathetic 3 point shooting. Osman would give them some energy and youth.

Box outs are an anathema to the cavs
This is beyond embarrassing.
I’m absolutely done watching this team till a trade happens or Lue is fired.
trade does nothing as long as lue is still here
I do have to say, they would not have these problems if IT wasn’t playing, Frye was playing all TTs minutes, and they had three of Love, Frye, Korver, Calderon, LBJ, smith(maybe?) out there all the time.
They just don’t show any urgency.
Cavs have taken 68 shots while the Spurs have taken 88 shots – 20 MORE SHOTS… we need a rebounder.
A loss to this depleted Spurs team may be almost as bad as the OKC loss. Particularly after all the practice and team meeting/gripe session.
When IT enters the game…
?fit=960%2C540
I’ll need something stronger…
Defense is pitiful but lebron drove at 3 guys to basket….team just can’t get consistent stops
I would trade IT for Backpack Kid straight up
Wide open three for Spurs, in the background LBJ jogging back through the middle of the court…
“Well… at least I outlasted J Kidd…”
IT’s defense…

Somehow, I despite disliking getting IT in the trade, I really couldn’t imagine how much worse his d could be than Ky. Amazing.
And the lane parts for Forbes, generously listed at 6-3.
Incredible how IT and TT returning has destroyed the Cav offense…
Isaiah just gave up.
And again.
Nevermind my stream just rewound.
Be nice to see some intestinal fortitude for this final 6:24…
The Cavs just don’t care. Maybe coach Lue needs to make them practice until they get it right.
It is back. This game is over.
Spurs play such a simple, yet beautiful brand of basketball: quick decisions, either shoot, drive, shoot, off ball movement. Such a contrast to Lue’s “play your game” system
Exactly, it’s beautiful to watch.
So where we’re at is that Derrick Rose is an upgrade from the Cavs’ starting point guard.
Calderon had actually been the most effective
Yep, I forgot about Jose, because Lue has also.
I hate to say it but yes, because somehow he is a better passer and defensive player than IT????? Wait, what did I just say? Hold on, I thidk I smel bunnin toaoost.
I think Love and Frye would help in the game. Too bad if they were in they wouldn’t get any shots.
KLove in
Awful basketball…but good basketball by a skeleton Spurs team…
LeBron’s turnovers have been brutal this game.
F that. Bertans just ran fullback lead for that dunk.
Cavs at least getting some stops.
Oh I immediately regret my words.
I agree.
This group can’t really score… but at least they hustle on D…
Aldridge best player in this game.
No Cedi… sad face
Argh. Hate that Wade shot.
That was the best catch I have ever seen TT make with his Trump hands. Too bad it only led to a foul
Don’t put LeBron back in….yet
Nice hands, TT!
Wade has almost countered the Parker effect… almost…
Rose jump passes…
TP is quicker than IT at age 34
Jesus Parker just danced in the lane for like five steps
