Podcap: Cavs 140, Wolves 138 in OT (or, How You Remind Me)
2018-02-08https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/episode-159-or-how-you-remind-me
After reaching the lowest depths of doubt, denial and depression Tuesday in Orlando, the Cavs returned home and played possibly the game of the season in reminding us how good they can be when they try. There were contributions up and down the lineup in this unbelievable overtime shootout thriller with the Timberwolves, that saw both teams combine for an NBA record 40 (!!!) three pointers. LeBron James also reminded us of just how great he is… notching yet another triple double with 37 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds… the last few of which vaulted him past Zydrunas Ilgauskas and made him the all time franchise leader in all three categories. Yet, he saved his best for last… draining a turnaround jumper over Jimmy Butler as the final buzzer sounded. It was arguably his greatest game winning shot in a regular season game during the LeBron 2.0 era.

It was great to see LeBron smile again. It was also great to see the Cavs free Cedi Osman from the bench, as he came up with some terrific and much needed hustle and defensive ability. But, did it change the narrative going forward? Will it be a turning point in the season when we look back? Does it alter what the Cavs do in the next 12 hours or so with the trade deadline looming? To try and answer some of these questions, as well as thoroughly break down this dramatic and genuinely enjoyable victory, Nate, Tom and EG piled into the booth to chop it up.
And, if you’re wondering about the subtitle of this podcap… well, you’ll hear the inspiration for it pretty quickly as you tune in. As always, you can listen above, on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play.
Enjoy, and GO CAVS!

Why did the Lakers agree to this? (I’m thrilled)
So they can clear cap space to make a run at LBJ and others…
15 minutes to go… expecting at least a small flurry of deals…

People like Pelton killing the Cavs for the moves have never been forced to watch IT play ball…
Pelton thinks these moves were bad? What a moron.
Gave Cavs D for Laker trade…
Well he also liked the trade from the summer so I’m not surprised.
Too focused on trees and not the forest. Typical for a stat nerd.
This was a grade A day for the Cavs.
Sad to see Frye & Wade go. But really we got 4 rotational level guys, with at least one and possibly 3 starters.
We got younger, more athletic, better 3PT shooting (especially in the backcourt), better defensively, none of the guys we got are rentals, and we showed Bron we are all in.
I like the Lakers trade more juxtaposed to the acquistions of Hill and Hood who are much better players. in a vacuum it didn’t look great other than to cut bait on the IT/Crowder experiment
What kind of hallucinogens is he taking, and where does he get them? If he dislikes those moves, he clearly has never watched Rose, IT, shump, or Crowder play this year.
3 questions:
1) Who starts now?
2) Who starts when Love returns?
3) Who starts vs the Hawks?
Hill & Bron for certain. Love when he returns. TT has to start at the moment. Hood/JR at the 2. My shot:
Now: Hill, JR, Bron, Nance, TT.
Love: Hill, Hood, Bron, Nance, Love.
Atl: Calderon, JR, Bron, Green, TT. With Osman, Korver + Perrantes, Holland, & Zizic the only other guys we have.
Once Love is back, the starters (remember how reluctant Lue is to change out starters) would likely be
Hill
Smith
James
Love
Thompson
My question is more about the bench. Is the 2nd unit then
Calderon
Korver
Hood
Green
Nance
leaving Clarkson, Osman, and Zizic out except as injury replacements?
Clarkson will definitely play ahead of Calderon…
i like that love lineup!
Now
Hill 26
JR 28
Hood 30
LBJ 35 split btwn starters and bench units
TT/Nance depending on matchup 25
Clarkson 22
Korver 20
Cedi 15 Green/JR 3
Green 13
Nance/TT/Green 23
When love comes back
Hill 26
Hood 28
LBJ 33
Love 31
Nance/Tt 25
Clarkson 15 JR 7
JR 10 Cedi 10
Korver 15
Green 15 Cedi 2
Nance/Tt 23

LoL His humor
How long to we think it will take the Cavs to assimilate these new pieces?
3 seasons. :p
I deserved that… ;)
The Dan haters were right about one thing: He will be bringing up three Brink’s trucks for new contracts next year.
If, if he resigns hood. I could see him passing on matching if LBJ decides to go.
https://twitter.com/MarcJSpearsESPN/status/961684630645612544
He would be a great pickup for Cavs if it shakes out that way. I really like his game and I think he woukd be a great glue guy.
It helps bringing in players from even shittier situations than what the Cavs were in. Not playing in Minnesota. Passed over by organization in LAL (Nance/Clarkson). Playing for garbage organization SAC (Hill). Players coming from these situations to the Cavs are usually hyped to be playing for a contender (think Mosgov, JR, Frye, Korver, etc)
I’m sure you would Bill… would love to see Simmons’ actual face right now…

I had students attempting to derail our class to discuss these implications… needless to say, my professionalism was tested, but I passed…

Good news for the Nets pick.
Now I would love a Carroll or Dinwiddie deal.
Ante for dinwiddie

Good call! And they can probably get a serviceable big in the buyout market.

Add Noel if he gets bought out?
Sure.
OW I HAVEN’T BEEN THIS EXCITED SINCE WE WON THE NBA CHAMPIONSHIP—MAN DO I FEEL BETTER ABOUT THIS TEAM ALREADY——-LARRY NANCE ” IS COMING HOME ” WHERE HE BELONGS —-GOOD PERSON ALOT OF UPSIDE —-A.C. AND CAMPY SHOULD BE HAPPY AS HELL TOO !!!—–BELIEVELAND ONCE AGAIN !!!!
Crank up the Pointer Sisters!
“Cakewalk into town” (PS + T. Mahal)
If you look at how much younger the Cavs just got: http://www.espn.com/nba/team/roster/_/name/cle/cleveland-cavaliers. You add the Brooklyn pick and its now a no-brainer for Lebron to return next year (if you factor in roster ability, age, and legacy narrative).
Certainly a lot better chances. He could still bolt to SA, or Houston if Morey pulls some magic out of his hat, dumps a bunch of salary via trades and convinces Bron and Paul to take a little less money. Lakers are possible but I think the cavs and SA are by far the only realistic scenarios.
LeBron will go to the Lakers to be reunited with IT!
LOL Let’s see LA sports media sell that narrative.
Lol that would be hilarious, but LA isn’t keeping IT.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/961680848872443907
If the Cavs could somehow get Dedmon it would be awesome, but failing that, I would take one bought out Brook Lopez…
Well… I guess it wasn’t one magic bullet… but several…
I just had a terrible thought… what if IT and his hip fail the physical in LA?
Haven’t you seen him play? He’s 100%! Anyway, the Lakers just want to dump the contracts, so I doubt they care…
This is true. Plus the Lakers know exactly what they’re getting from his past 15 games. This is nothing like when Danny Ainge said IT’s recovery was on track even thought the Celtics hadn’t seen him all summer.
No. No. No. No. No. No. Why would you pop my balloon of happiness like that?
He can play but he just sucks. Not sure what the threshold would be to pass or fail.
Eastern conference thought 1 Lebron was unstoppable. Wait until we use the Nets pick to get a 2nd Lebron.
https://twitter.com/ramonashelburne/status/961679964096507904
Will the Heat keep Wade, or cut him? I wouldn’t mind Wade coming back as a mentor/12th man…
Oh for sure they will keep him! He will bring up ticket sales and besides that organization owes him. He brought them 3 championships.
https://twitter.com/AmicoHoops/status/961679123528802304
Gilbert could have a $100 million dollar tax bill next season.
I could refer to it as paying 10 figures in tax.
Nate, do we need an addendum to our Duels?
Part II coming in 12 months!
Congrats guys, all the players that frustrated ctb are gone and added some exciting players. Two months to figure out lineups.
For the first time this season, I am actually optimistic about this team’s future and this season.
Me too
https://twitter.com/SInow/status/961679366370549760
Lol! Wowser! Don’t often see such blatant shade like that thrown to an individual player by a national sports media group. That was beautiful.
Love it. But brutal coming from SI
https://twitter.com/WindhorstESPN/status/961679425795510273
We got Gudaitis!!
https://twitter.com/WindhorstESPN/status/961679133792141315
Who won the 2024 draft pick trade?
Getting taller…
IT 5’9
Rose 6’3
Wade 6’4
Crowder 6’6
Hill 6’3
Clarkson 6’5
Hood 6’8
Nance 6’9
Pretty crazy Cavs were able to pull all that off with the crappiest players possible on the team…now its time for all of us to calm the eff down….could still be dicey early on with new faces, but end game is very exciting…as Bart Scott once said ‘ CANT WAIT!!’
True, but we can’t be worse defensively, so that will get better by default by replacing IT, Rose, and in a way Crowder.
Cavs just added like three feet of height…
And became about 20 years younger

Perk coming to town!
Fizdale on The Jump loves these moves…
https://twitter.com/TheSteinLine/status/961677468468957184
That’s weird.
They couldn’t add Perk with IT on the roster because Perk would eat him.
As an appetizer

https://twitter.com/CavsTheTweets/status/961676732058275841
Wait, that didn’t end well for Leeroy or his group, if I recall…
Based on timing and schedules, looks like first game with all new players will be against Boston on Sunday….that will be fun
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/961676997775773696
Meanwhile, there’s only an hour left until the Trade Deadline…

https://twitter.com/TheSteinLine/status/961676130880237572
Whelp, don’t think there will be any nonsense going on in the Locker room anymore if that is the case or as many crazy hard fouls on LBJ.
Sure.. Why Not?
https://twitter.com/RustCoastSports/status/961676343640510464
Lmao…IT is the gift that never stops giving…like an STD…
WTH? This guy’s leg could be hanging by a thread and he would still make demands to start. Dude is Not a Team Player. It’s all about him. And THIS is his very first hour on a brand new team!
Lue might have already had the communication with him and waited to deal him than create chaos.
As long as Ty can coach these guys… feels like these moves get the Cavs back to the Finals…
It would be hard not too, now. I think they are certainly better positioned to defend against gs than they have been since LBJ came back.
Wait a minute! I keep reading that Lue is an idiot on CtB. How can he coach?
Lue could screw it up. However, with the pieces he has been given it will be much more difficult for him to have the utterly insane and indefensible rotations he has had throughout his tenure.
do you think you sometimes need bad trades in order to get good trades? I feel like no one wants to even talk to Danny Ainge now. Maybe this was Koby and Dan’s plan all along. Trade Kyrie and dump trash for 2018 pick, Hood, Hill, Clarkson and Nance. Insert “think about it” meme
Live look at Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens
Cannot believe they are balking at giving up a first for Tyreke…but it’s fine, just go to war with what you have, Danny…
Inwould not be surprised if Crowder is actually decent to good in Utah…they actually have a system there. In Cleveland he really sucked, though.
Completely agree. He’s a good player but Lue and Longabardi didn’t know how to use him.
LOL… they’re debating on The Jump how IT will fit in LA once Lonzo comes back…
It would be disrespectful to not start him…
It’s weird to think that a rookie averaging like 10ppg and shooting like 35% from the field and like 25% from three is better than Thomas, but it’s true.
I feel sort of psychic…
https://twitter.com/TheSteinLine/status/961673755813703681
That could he beneficial for both
He could take Tyus Jones’ minutes…Wolves fans would love that…
https://twitter.com/joevardon/status/961669005122654210
Well, Tom… Cedi’s going to get his 30+ against Atlanta at least…
hell yes he is.
So will Zizic…and maybe a few Charge players…
they will have to play Perrantes and Holland too from G-league
https://twitter.com/mcten/status/961672439515185152
Man what a long wait now to see the team play…. glad they get to do this with the positivity of last nights win rather than if they had been blown out again
Magic is going to fall in love with IT…he plays the game just like Magic did…load up the Brinks truck…
https://twitter.com/RoRoBoom/status/961672504258584576
Whoa. Stunned. I was wrong about Gilbert. The irving trade still sucked and he screwed up with Griffin, but he’s trying to make it right with money and smart moves.
I feel like we gave up too much in the Laker trade, but getting Hood and Hill is a heist. I guess we just needed to get rid of IT so needed to overpay for that? Sad to see Frye go. Also wish we could have kept Wade – he was doing a nice job coming off on the bench and holding that unit together.
We’re in much better shape to match up against GS, but will need at least one more big to get through the East.
Unless you think Crowder and IT were going to get back to last year’s form – the Cavs improved at 4 positions without giving up the Brooklyn pick.
Rodney Hood is legit. George Hill was the guy I wanted if I could have anyone. Clarkson and Nance are at least younger and not toxic. This seems majestic to me. Of course, it’s only possible because our self-made owner keeps shelling out 10s of millions of dollars every time LeBron starts frowning.
i see what you did there. :)
Yep! Who Loves you baby!!
https://twitter.com/KevinKleps/status/961670623159357443
Think there’s anything left in the tank to trade?
No but three roster spots for buyouts
JR has been pretty solid in previous 5 of 7 games. At least offensively. Let’s not give up on “The Pipe”!
He’s beginning to feel himself again…
EG: Ya Boi….
https://twitter.com/JerryEngelmann/status/961671028521959424
LOL… he’s not wrong
Read that whole thread
Yeah, it made sense for LA, but Utah, and Sac deals leaves me wondering what exactly those FOs are thinking. Sac is likely tanking, but it seemed like Utah is trying to make playoffs?
Utah was losing Hood after the season, and Crowder is under contract and cheap for the next two years. He will also probably be a decent player for them, Snyder runs a regimented system.
I mean, they had Hood’s bird rights, so if they wanted to spend, they could have. I agree on Crowder though. His individual d is probably a wash with Hood’s at this point though.
