Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Celtics, Game 5 (#BestofThree)
2018-05-23I was tempted to make George Hill the poster child of this Live Thread… mainly because his number is “3” and because when he plays well, he brings out the best in the Cavs. However, since Mike covered G Hill’s effect on the Cavs in depth last week, I settled on a shot of the other crucially important matchup in this deadlocked Conference Finals. Kyle Korver is 16 years older than Jaylen Brown, but he’s been able to match the young Celtic’s energy and hustle over the last two games. Even though Brown wound up leading Boston in scoring (25 points) in Game 4, it took him an inefficient 23 shots to get there. Three of those were blocked by the craftily defensive Korver, who I always forget has good size at 6-7 (kind of like how Ty Lue forgets how old Kyle is).
Now that both teams have held serve at home, the series has effectively been shrunk to a “best of three” scenario… which you no doubt learned on Monday night when it was literally the most used quote by the President Genius Celtics hive mind in the post game pressers. Boston would presumably hold the advantage given that two of the three will be played in the always loud and annoying TD Garden… a place where they boast a 9-0 record in these playoffs. However, it’s never all that wise to bet against LeBron James winning at least one road game in a playoff series… in fact, outside of last year’s Finals, James has won a road playoff game in the other 32 previous series. He is unfortunately 0-3 on the road in Game 5s against the Celtics in his playoff career though, so he’ll look to change that tonight.
For the Cavs to put the first post season blemish on Boston’s home court record, their role players will have to exert even more of the hustle and intensity they put on display during the last two games in Cleveland. It will take more stifling defense, more teeth-rattling screens and more Kyle Korver blocks and floor burns. It will also probably take more threes from all of the Cavs’ gunners. They went just 8-23 from deep in Game 4, but still won by nine. A few more of those go in, and the game is likely not in doubt past the end of the third quarter. Korver went 2-5 from downtown and Brown wound up 2-6. Something tells me whoever can win that particular battle will make the difference tonight.
The rumblings are that President Stevens might switch things up in his starting contingency, and that he might go more defensive early with either Aaron Baynes or Marcus Smart (or both) to begin. Hard to say for sure, since Brad is keeping things close to the vest…
Brad Stevens says he doesn’t reveal lineups at media avail—as opposed to recent years, when he did—because he didn’t know he didn’t have to until before shortly before tip-off.

Ty Lue, on the other hand, will likely stay with what’s been working the last few games with Tristan Thompson in the starting lineup along with LeBron, Kevin Love, George Hill and JR Smith. We’ll see if any adjustments made by the President will force more tinkering by Ty.
Sticking to my non-predictions of playoff games, but I will say that I believe the Cavs will win once in Boston… either tonight or Game 7.
Catch all the action starting at 8:30pm EST on ESPN… and, as always, chime in below with your thoughts…
These refs are cancer…
Ya. It’s been really really bad
George Hill with some life
Yeah… IDK why James doesn’t drive on Baynes like that all day long… especially if they’re not giving him any help..
He was also fouled
I totally agree with those analytics…. A lot Celtics hit shots that they shouldn’t have… hopefully regression to the mean happens.
But they only shot 38%. How much more regression from that?
Oh I thought they were upper 40% from three…. sheesh…. I think the Cavs are just screwed.
They were good from deep & perfect from the line, more FTAs, & had fewer TOs. Plus they won the glass.
Oh yaya, JR misses wide open look…he may be useless tonight…
I wish Hill had JC’s confidence in his shot… and I wish JC had some of Hill’s restraint…
Cavs settled for way too many contested Js. Rather have a shot clock violation than those.
No hit bid over for Plutko in the 7th, but man the kid pitched pretty well for only his second start in the bigs… in Wrigley…

LOL…Jeff Green only Cav with positive +/-
Ready to see hustle from Hill
Cavs need 3rd quarter of lifetime or this game is over….Hill needs to drive to basket and he will get fouled, not wait around passively 25 feet from basket. JR needs to catch and shoot every time he gets a pass (unless somehow double covered). Cavs need to crash the boards on both ends and play aggressive defense we saw in last two games. Not complex formula; time for this team to put up or shut up
This is exactly my point Hill needs to try more.
Horford got every call and Kevin Love got absolutely hosed by the refs that half.
Lue would not make in game adjustments but if he wants to win the game, start Korver in 2nd half in place of Hill or JR or even Love.
Korver in for JR.
Korver was just 1-4 in the first half because, you know, he is injured. Maybe KK’s injury will get better in the second half
Korver has missed some wide open 3’s…. JR has missed some horrific shots from the 3s…. Bron has more or less been an observer in 1st half… Hill – don’t get this man… just so unlike what i used to watch for past 7 years w/ other teams….
Green – absolutely the worst player in my mind.. but he prob thinks he will get max contract with this stint w/ the Cavs… Lue loves him so it must mean he’s good right?
Korver is +ve even when he misses shots. Cavs can use his game of high IQ.
Hill should talk to Korver about adjusting to LeBron. It’s like Hill hasn’t figured out how not to just be passive most of the time.
If JR doesn’t get it going I’m riding with Clarkson.
Agree. JR and Green have more zeroes in their line than Corey Kluber locked in.
now that’s funny.
We could hope for Cedi, but Lue gonna Lue.
If you get a chance… watch this Plutko kid pitch during halftime… he’s doing a number on the Cubs…
That was admirable discretion on your part, Evil
I tried… didn’t work though :(
JR – 16 minutes, 0 points, 0 assists, 0 rebounds, 0 blocks, 1 foul, 1 turnover
Wow, what a waste of a spot.
Lue, for the love of God please play Cedi.
Well, at least it didn’t balloon to 20+. Score the first possession & it is under 10.
Need something from Hill, JR, Korver, Green, Thompson.
Some fair officiating would help.
we had 4 seconds and best we could do was have TT dribble for 3 sec and shoot a half courter? what a crazy stuff
If we can’t withstand a hot half from the Celtics, get it together and turn it around, then we have no place in the Finals. Houston took a stronger punch from the Warriors and found a way to come back. It is just 11 points. Get it together.
Agreed.
Completely true.
+1
Cavs need to muck it up. I’d have dressed perk tonight.
Yup they need to play with more urgency. And our guards need to be more aggressive.
Hell yeah. I’d love to see Perk flex on the C’s in the paint. And throw Cedi in there to Delly-aggravate them in a full court press.
This team wants to quit so bad this game. Will figure out in third if early bed time
I wonder if there is data to show that the more minutes guys play together, the more effective they are. It makes intuitive sense.
It’s just strange that we still seem to be mixing up lineups. In the ECF.
I love my Cavs.. but if Lue keeps playing Green… i might just get really angry…..
11 point lead isn’t insurmountable by any stretch… overall a good quarter from the Cavs… wish they had taken advantage on some of those empty possessions that followed the 12-3 run…
Fine empty trips in a row led off by a missed corner three by Green
Jr Smith with the big donut again.
Can’t win like that.
Down 11 is almost a moral victory as badly as they played for most of the half.
Very lucky to be down 11 despite playing 5 on 8 and passive on o.
Hate the Jeff Green toreador fly by defense…
The classic Horford flinch on that TT heave…
that James layup was unreal
Gotta have Korver in for this… need his shooting…
I’m kind of okay if the Cavs are down by a bit at the half… better that than a lead that they would inevitably choke away in the third… maybe they’ll actually come out with some energy…
Again the Cavs backcourt getting outplayed.
JR got mugged by Horford. No call
Forget it, Jake. It’s Celtic-town.
James back in. That was different.
I actually like this move. They’re relying on James too much. Someone else has to step up
Ya. It’s still early and Lue is sending a message.
I actually just think he needed a blow.
Plus James hasn’t played well. One of those nights where he’s out of kilter.
And as I type that he bullies his way to the rim.
Gonna need to make FTs, guys…
What is this lineup?
Green in for James to finish the half.
guys, this is what Hill and JR have done … just very inconsistent or consistently bad on the road.. Hill goes into shell, and JR is asleep on the wheel…. i don’t get it but Lue just never adjusts.. take them out sooner… stop putting in Green… i rather see Cedi any day over Green
Stevens is running a 7 man rotation…
I can’t wait for the postgame comments where LeBron James recites the entire second half play-by-play and Ty Lue says that he had no idea what happened and needs to watch the tape.
Bring back Nance. 8nly one playing hard.
i think Bron still is waiting for Rockets vs GS series.. If Rockets win the next one, Bron might play harder… I really believe Bron does not want to go to Finals and get beaten by GS in 4 games… that really hurts his legacy…
No way
The Cavs starters are being just too soft on defense again. The Cavs will not win this game or even game seven if it goes there.
The Celtics are getting great shots and the Cavs are struggling to get theirs.
In 35 combined minutes Green, Hill and JR haven’t scored. That is just so pathetic. And TT with one point
Smart is a terrible offensive player. Hill is either hurting or completely unprepared to play a playoff game.
What a mess…
Do the Cavs even care tonight? They all seem a half step slow right now in the 2nd.
I get that we are mot getting calls. But you cannot get passive. Bron has to attack more. With more force.
Not much space when the Cavs have bigs in there…
This is frustrating. It would be nice if they would at least compete.
LOL

Yeah, home court Smart…think they widen the rims for him…
So now Hill can’t even stop Smart? SMH
Celtics getting every bounce. Too. Many junp shots. By Cavs.
That might be the first time ever Marcus Smart intentionally used the glass…
Love cant shoot those turnaround 3’s like Korver
Happy birthday douchebag… Morris making me wonder if he and Markieff didn’t pull a Prince and Pauper switcheroo for this game…
It is truly ridiculous how the Celtic sub scrubs hit threes at home…
LL Cool J
what the hell is Bron doing tonight? just passing? just don’t care…
Cavs perimeter D…
It’s been really bad.
Has LeBron driven more than twice this game?
Exactly.
Love needs to elbow Horford in the grill to get him to back off.
End of rally. Down 13 again
Clarkson really needs to begin a rap career and then quit basketball to focus on that.
Hopefully by the second half of this game.
Dude played his best stretch of the playoffs…
How many times is Baynes allowed to foul Clarkson?
Clarkson looks so tiny next to baynes
