Live Thread: Cavs @ Pacers (#Physicality)
2018-12-18The Indiana Pacers are a tough team. They showed as much last season in the first round of the playoffs. Physicality is the name of their game, and they’ve shown it off this year as the stingiest defense to score on in the League allowing just 101.2 points per game. To accomplish this, they feature a strong mix of individual and team defenders. They average more than nine steals per game, with five players each having at least one per game. They also block over five shots per game, with more than half coming from C Myles Turner who leads the NBA with 2.72 per contest. Despite missing their All Star guard, Victor Oladipo, for an 11 game stretch, defense has driven the Pacers on their current League high seven game win streak.
So, how do the Cavaliers compete with the physicality of this Indy team? Well, re-inserting David Nwaba and his tough nosed defense into the starting lineup is a start. The last time Coach Larry Drew did that (correction, was able to do that), it produced arguably the best three game stretch of this season. With Nwaba plugged in as the designated defensive stopper, the Cavs nearly beat the Lakers before upsetting the Sixers and Rockets on back-to-back nights. Unfortunately, a sore knee kept him out of the next nine games, depriving the Cavs of his toughness and defensive ability. Nwaba returned in last week’s win over the Knicks, but has been on a minutes restriction ever since. That could be changing with Drew reportedly leaning towards starting him tonight… which is probably a good idea against a now healthy and resurgent Oladipo.
Though it may be a challenge to play physical with Tristan Thompson still out for a few more weeks, the Cavs could take a page out of Indiana’s playbook by toughening up their level of defensive play. Having the newly re-acquired Matthew Dellavedova should help, as should the athleticism of Alec Burks and Jaron Blossomgame. Collin Sexton and Cedi Osman are also capable of being tougher defenders (when they’re not worried about their offensive games as much). Let’s hope the Cavs can toughen up and start tightening the screws on their opponents.
Prediction: This is the part where I poke the bear and predict a tough and convincing Pacers win over the undermanned Cavs… say something to the tune of 108-94. But, let’s not forget what day it is… (victory Tuesday for those of you who forgot).
Catch all of the physical action starting at 7pm EST on FSO. And, of course, make your feelings known in the space below…
GO CAVS!
Great win! Delly +18 in 15 minutes, wow.
Not sure there is a way to check, but pretty certain Delly’s RPM has skyrocketed the last few games relative to where it. At -.48. Not bad terrible for a backup pg. I think it was at like -2.5 or something when he came here. His BPM was a whopping -8.0 for the bucks this year. For the cavs it is an excellent +3.0. Small sample size, but that is an absurd difference. Still unclear why RPM is different than bball ref BPM. Both re regularized in some way, but clearly they must be calculated differently. Obviously he has been… Read more »
Regularized
Look at the brain on John!
Cavs win, Lakers lose, Hawks win… a good night!
If the Cavs are serious about tanking, they are going to have to trade Delly… and maybe LNJ… they are going to win games they should lose due to their intangibles that rub off on others. Delly was +17 in SIXTEEN minutes…
In related news, if they want to tank, they have to play Clarkson.
We were 6-31 from deep. 19%. And won.
Holding Indy to 91 points is a hellava good sign. LNJ in a rich run of form. Led team in rbs, dimes, steals, and blocks. 2nd in scoring. As is, you figure he is a good fit with Love (especially on offense). If his spot shooting gets to the point where you can play him at the 4 with TT or Henson (which should both on defense) or Zizic, we really become versatile. Another game where Delly led bench unit was awesome. Team high +18 for Delly (10/1/4 on 4-6, 2-4 triples, 3 TO). And every bench player in +… Read more »
I was the only one in the blog fantasy league willing to take a chance on young Junior. You should all be ashamed.
Lol. I had no faith in lue.
I’d forgotten about Lue so much that even seeing his name made me shudder a bit.
AS WELL AS T.T. IS PLAYING THIS YEAR–AND HOW HE HAS TAKEN ON THE LEADERS ROLE —WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH NATE—IF A DEAL COMES ALONG THAT ” KNOCKS YOUR SOCKS OFF “—–ALL IN —–ENHANCE LNJ’S ROLE—-START TO BUILD /MODE THIS TEAM AROUND THE YOUTH—CEDI LAST 2 GAMES —SHOWING BACK TO EARLY SEASON FORM —STAY CONFIDENT/ STAY CONSISTENT YOUNG MAN !!———–AS ROUGH AS THIS SEASON HAS BEEN AT TIMES ——-I CAN HONESTLY SAY I AM ENJOYING WATCHING / ROOTING FOR THIS TEAM MORE THAN LAST YEARS TEAM
You would not enjoy this season if the LBJ hangover was still on board, Korver, Smith, Hill , Lue. They were all LBJ water carriers, too old, too slow, or too sad. Love being out and Delly coming back has started to get the ball moving. Kevin is a good soldier but his value will ultimately be in what he can yield in youth and picks. Is there another LNJ out there? Koby go find him.
Kevs not going anywhere for a while.
JUST WATCHED LNJ’S BUZZER TIP IN FOR ABOUT 20 TIMES —-WOW –CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF IT ——-IT IS GOING TO BE A ‘CHALLENGING ‘ SEASON BUT GAMES LIKE THESE ARE WHY WE WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT / BELIEVE IN OUR CAVS ——” BELIEVEINTHE LAND ‘
Checking back in to see how the defensive identity is shaping up and … what!? Really? WOOHOO!!!!
Junior was special tonight.
Kuzma is sooo bad on D. Deangelo Russell drains a dagger in his eye.
RJ is so good on the broadcast. This announcing crew on yes is fantastic.
Jared dudley with a dagger j. Lol.
I’d build this team around nance/love. Wish cedi could figure out his shot.
FT% way up so far. I kind of like that he hit a big 3 late the other night. After shooting like crap the whole game.
Nets up on Lakers late on nba TV.
Nance surrounded by competent a competent PG and more shooting is a fun thought.
I agree with the argument below about trading TT – especially with Henson on the team. When will Henson be back?
EG – the Tuesday recap is uncanny!
Delly apparently on minutes restriction.
Someone make a gif out of vic throwing his hands up on the floor.

Fantastic defense tonight by the Cavs. Zizic with some key minutes off the bench, along with Blossomgame. Delly was special, minus the TOs.
What a win…so unexpected. Thanks Oladipo!
Junior with 15/16/6/3/1 line… doing it all with the basketball…
Tuesday magic!
Cool win for Cavs….my brother in law is pacers fan he called it ‘worst loss of pacers season’ haha
They played down to the Cava for sure, but the Cavs played some good d.
SIX CAVS IN DOUBLE FIGURES!!! EVERYBODY CHIPPING!
THE ” EVIL TUESDAY ” STREAK LIVES ON ——KOLBY SIGN HIM UP RIGHT NOW !! : )
This is why they need to find a place to send Thompson. Lnj has a chance to be special.
Co-sign
Thirded…. motion carries.
Objection.
If Larry improves as a spot up shooter (and it is looking good) you can pair him OR Love with TT/Henson/Zizic, or with each other.
Then we have a ton of frontcourt versatility. If we get an offer we cannot refuse, sure. But the thought of TT&Nance on D and effective offensively, that could be dynamite.

LARRY NANCE JUNIOR!!!!
Junior!
Great game to watch either way. Can’t help but to be rooting for Zion… and if we win, hooray for that too.
I want a redux of that Burks down the lane dunk walk off…
Two really nice game winners this year.
WOW. HE MISSED THEM BOTH!!!!
Choke oladipo!
Dipo anti-clutch tonight…
Wow… Dipo out here bricking FTs…
Helps the Cavs… but not my fantasy team…
Hood had a hitch on that miss…. GREAT TAKE BURKS!!! ONE POINT GAME!!!
Delly out there! They’re trying to win this one!
Wow. Oladipo absolutely walked on that rebound. At least Burks got it backm
I like it… keep it close and play the free throw game…
Not the best shot Rodney…
LNJ has become the Cavs best player.
Indy’s inability to make clutch FTs is keeping the door open…
WOW>>> Hood couldn’t get the same call Oladipo just received.
Not many calls going Cavs way…
Refs giving this game to indy.
NICE HUSTLE AND FINISH HOOD!!!
#BeTheFight!
Nice up and under, Rodney!
AW DAMN.. Hood should’ve shot that.
NICE FINISH SEXTON!!!
Nice pass Sexton, Cedi can’t hit the stand still 3 again.
Damn… needed that three Rodney…
This. Officiating. Is. Trash.
Way to hustle guys!
Lnj!
Terrible time for a brain cramp like that…
Gotta watch the clock fellas…
Gotta shoot that, Nance. Argh.
Nice pick up Young Bull!
Nance needs 4 assists for triple double…
Astute observation by Angel…
