While the Cavs stole home court from the Hawks and jumped out to an early series lead after winning Game 1, 97-89, they head into Game 2 with a great deal of uncertainty regarding without Kyrie Irving due to an aching left knee. Irving missed the team’s morning shootaround, instead spending the time getting a further evaluation on his knee after treatment. The latest news had him getting another MRI on the knee, and he is listed as “questionable” now out for tonight’s game.
“This is obviously one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever dealt with,” Irving said after Game 1. “We do days and days and go out there and it’s nothing like simulating a game so for me, I just have to continue to do what I’ve been doing and do whatever is necessary to put myself out there. I’m all about winning. That’s the only thing that matters.”
Since Kyrie can’t go, LeBron, who himself is dealing with a tender right ankle after twisting it stepping on a sideline cameraman in Game 1, will be taxed with a larger share of the ball-handling duties.
“That means less touches in the paint,” James said. “If one of our ball-handlers is out, I’ve got to handle the ball more along with (Dellavedova). It changes my approach a little bit.”
According to David Blatt, Delly will likely start in Kyrie’s place at the point.
“I’ll be ready to go,” Dellavedova said. “Whatever the team needs.”
What the team may miss more than ball handling though, is the threat of Irving being on the floor, even though injured, as a decoy. No matter how hobbled he may appear, he still requires attention from defenders for his outside shooting. Even in his 27 minutes in Game 1, he chipped in 10 points on 4-10 shooting, including 2-3 from deep, as well as six assists.
Other Cavs will have to step up and help LeBron and J.R. Smith with the scoring load, and the team will look to get more output from Iman Shumpert, Delly and James Jones (who were a combined 1-16 from the floor, and 0-10 from three in Game 1).
The Hawks did not make it through Game 1 unscathed either, as Demarre Carroll, who suffered a sprained left knee and some bruising in the fourth quarter.
Initially, the injury looked much worse than it turned out to be, as he needed crutches to walk after the game on Wednesday night. However, he was back on the floor with the Hawks for shootaround and reportedly even took some shots. The Hawks are listing Carroll as a “game-time decision” for Game 2 tonight, even though his left knee was heavily wrapped, he walked with a limp, and Kent Bazemore said he expects to start in Carroll’s place. Bazemore gives up almost four inches and 50 pounds to the man he’ll be charged with guarding (LBJ), so he might have to take Paul Millsap up on his offer to help guard the King.
“It’s probably next man up for them, too,” James said. “They’ve played with injuries obviously less than we have but that’s not my concern about who is in their lineup. My concern is about who we got and who is going to be suited up for us when it’s time to get ready to go again.”
Despite the injuries on both sides, this is a critical game for both teams. Atlanta has their backs to the wall, and will be fighting hard to avoid an 0-2 deficit going to Cleveland. But, already down one of their big three and potentially missing another, the Cavs sound determined to take advantage of the opportunity to take the Hawks out as quickly as possible.
“We are just as desperate as we were in game one to win this one, as well; so we are going to come out the same way, stop their ability to make plays. We can try to slow them down; we can’t stop them. They’re a great offensive team but we just want to slow them down and do what we need to do on our end,” James said.
The running narrative with Kyrie’s injury issues has been whether or not the Cavs should just shut him down in the hopes that he can get healthier for a potential showdown with the winner of the Golden State/Houston matchup (the Warriors have a 2-0 lead in the series after a close 99-98 victory last night). However, they can’t afford to look past a still dangerous Hawks team and save Irving for a round that may never come if they don’t take care of business.
In other news, guess who’s birthday it is? Your favorite embattled “rookie” Cavs Coach, David Blatt. Ol’ Dave is 56 years young today. I imagine all the guys got together and got him something nice… or at least sang something like this…
“Happy Birth-day to you…
Just in time for Game Two…
We may not have Ky-rie…
But the bench mob will do!”
According to his interviews at shootaround today, here’s what David Blatt wanted for his birthday…
It's #Cavs HC David Blatt's birthday. This is what he would like: A win, you all to be healthy, world peace & solution to high pick-n-roll
— Chris Fedor (@ChrisFedor) May 22, 2015
Health, world peace and a solution to the high pick-n-roll might be asking too much, but let’s hope even if Kyrie can’t go, LBJ and Co. can deliver a win for their birthday coach and head home up 2-0.
What’s your prediction for Game 2?
Schroder led Atlanta with . . . 13 points.
Charles just called that Kyrie shouldn’t play the rest of the series…
The guys on NBA Network said the same thing.
I totally agree….
GOING TO FINISH MY LAST ” ALL FOR ONE ALE ” —-HERE’S TO YOU ALL MY FELLA BLOGGERS ( WISH WE COULD ALL GET TOGETHER AND DOWN A FEW )AND HERE’S TO YOU COACH BLATT–HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
That was amazing. Watching Fox. So much fun.
I love LeBron!!!!!!!!!!!
Cavs lead for the final 38 minutes of the game…
I’m scared of GS!
After what you’ve just witnessed the first two games??
Don’t get carried away…. The Warriors are waaayyyy better than the Hawks.
Eff that and Eff Golden State… they’re lucky they won last night…
Yes, Atlanta is in no way the same level as GS. Curry is almost unstoppable. And if you try and stop him his got soooooo many weapons.
You guys can keep on being scared… not me
Whose better LeBron or Curry?
LeBron and it’s not even close…
I’m talking about the teams…. Obviously LeBron is a better overall player than Curry but the Warriors have a better overall squad than the Cavs have right now.
Definitely. Hawks are soft as marshmallows
You’re scared of GS, but GS is scared of the Cavs!
Maybe? I’d be scared of LeBron. But GS is much better than ATL.
Believe in the power of the Cavs my friend…
I love the defense they are now presenting.
Yeah the defense is keeping me confident and not afraid. I think warriors could easily of been down 1 and even 2. Rockets don’t play defense like us and lebron is just lebron and teams play like they know he is the best
All smiles on that bench. HAPPY BIRTHDAY COACH BLATT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be honest the Cavs should not play Kyrie unless the Hawks find a way to win games 3 and 4 at the Q.
Does anybody have a link to a Cavs post game show on Fox Sports Ohio?
Looking ahead a bit here but maybe a future article about the feasibility of having 4 max contracts on the team. And if not, which one is going to be the odd man out. Kinda starting to look like Love at this point maybe?
No. Love is getting a max.
Who is the fourth?
TT
Max?! I think not. Unless it’s pre-inflation
LeBron is 14-0 when leading 2-0… Hawks are 0-16 when trailing 0-2
Cavs/Bulls was the REAL ECF…
Looks like you’re right. Nice Sherman line upthread, by the way.
Just wait for the recap… ;)
Series over! On to the next.
Joe Harris shot has been better…
Give him a few minutes. Law of averages.
Would be nice to see Joe make a shot. They could use a few minutes from him now and then while Kyrie is out.
Happy Birthday Dave!!!!
Hahahahha look at those Atlanta fans, loving it , #1 seed what ?
#NOEXCUSES! Cavs are just awesome
Every article on ESPN about this series has been “how the Hawks will win and/or even the series” and we just crushed them down a point guard. So pleased.
Yep so impressive on so many levels! We are looking more and more like champions every game. We keep getting better!
Great D tonight by Delly on Teague and Schroder when they tried to drive. Helped by the team’s scheme of giving them, and only them, the outside shot.
CURRY AND HARDEN ARE BOTH HAVING NICE SERIES —BUT GIVE ME LEBRON OVER THEM ANYTIME !!!
No triple double for Lebron, aww
The Hawks really look defeated.
How i n the world are these announcers harping on the injuries of ATLANTA???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I guess because its fresh injuries and its like our injuries are so “old” thats its not a factor anymore.
Maybe because our subs could be starters for them? They have no bench? Our bench guys play like regular and the announcErs forget/
First time all season Atlanta will have lost consecutive home games…
Bron is one board away from triple double…
Yeah he’ll get that and then sit down probably
Bron looks like he’s just practicing shots out there now…
Just dit LeBron already……..
Hawks look like they have given up…
They have! No real heart
Is it Miller time?
Wow. Just wow. Doing this down two starters is amazing.
Cavs loaded with winners and good coaching. Both unquantifiable by announcers and most fans.
Playing this kind of defense we might beat the other dominant team of the regular season. This is so goof to see and everyone keeps talking about Hawks and their injuries. Let’s go cavs
TT’S AGENT IS SMILING EVERY REBOUND THAT HE GRABS —WOW HAS HE INCREASED HIS VALUE !!
Incredible performance. Such an admirable team. Such impeccable character players.
LeBron is Sherman… and he has set fire to Atlanta!
Game over! Series over!
Lebron not off on the oops…
NOW THAT’S AN OOOP!!!
I’m just glad we scored lol. Finally TT get his alley oop !!!
What was a certain CtBer saying about Delly? Give him some warm up threes and he’ll become automatic.
DELLY!
We could have been up 20, these free throws are killing us
Dude… you are nitpicking…
Yes thats true, I’m just stating the obvious. That’s the only thing not going our way tonight.
Very glad we are getting to the line though, 24 FTA to 9 for Atlanta
Reggie: Pot of gold coming his way (re: TT)
Cavs cant score right now , wow only 4 points in almost 6 minutes. Good thing Atlanta cant score either.
Atlanta can’t score because the Cavs won’t let them…
Atlanta 5-23 from three. Remember when teams shot threes at 65% against the Cavs. Can’t be coaching, can it?
Cavs D is just SWARMING like BEES right now
No need for that Delly three
We’re letting them shoot threes. And they can’t hit at home.
WOW! I love Shump!
Hawks coach looks so confounded and defeated.
All right. Let’s keep this lead. I don’t want to sweat this one out.
Another Hawks blog comment:
“Bulls fan here, dropping by to commiserate.
Welcome to playoffs vs LeBron, in which you get to watch Shumpert hit stepbacks, Dellavedova sinks turnaround floaters in the lane, the Cavs team is unconscious from three, and even the few shots they miss are rebounded by Thompson. Not to mention that by some twisted voodoo, every player that sits for the Cavs only seems to make your own team worse…
“You’re either in my corner, or you’re with the trolls.” – Charlie Sheen

Delly initiating the offense is so funny.
30-17 in the third…..Cavs third quarters have been great this postseason. Third quarter was Mike Brown’s circus time
Is it time for the prevent?
As long as Lebron stays with his promise not to let the clock run too low.
I think they’ve scouted that Delly to Thompson lob.
Delly just throwing them too high tonight… even for MOz
Agree with Reggie, why is Delly letting the ball roll w/out time coming off the clock?
Exactly, Phil. Reggie needs to learn the rules. The game clock rolls, but the shot doesn’t. As usual, Delly is making the smart play.
Thanks! I never knew that!
The shot clock wasn’t running, but the game clock was. I think it’s only in the last 2 minutes or something that the game clock stops after made shots.
Um, Reggie, time WAS coming off the clock while Delly let the ball roll.
LBJ biding his time on the bench before he comes in to trigger the ground and pound offense…
Delly has been off on his oops tonight…
Delly really messing up those alley oops tonight
JFJ with a steal??
JAMES STEALING JONES!!!
sprained right ankle for horford
my bad, it was Korver, didnt hear da beginning
Korver doubtful to return…
I feel sorry for Korver and Al but to be honest if they can’t play then the Cavs should rest Kyrie for the remaining games of this series.
I love when Delly hits threes, but when he misses them, he really misses them…
@ATLHawks: Kyle Korver has a right ankle sprain and is doubtful to return, per our PR team.
So they feel sorry for the Hawks!! Ohh geez these announcers!!
Well, TNT is in Atlanta…
Good point lol…….
