Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls
2015-10-27LeBron James lost a grueling six game Finals, with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love both unavailable due to injury. In the following weeks, he sat at a pool with Love and decided it would be best for both of them if he re-signed with the Cavs. He then cringed when J.R. Smith opted out of his contract and came back for slightly less money. He even lobbied for the Cavs to re-sign Tristan Thompson using social media. His lobbying was as passive aggressive as a significant other saying, “sure, you can watch this preseason game because it makes you happy, even though it’s completely pointless.” And, he sat on a banana boat with Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. The King did all of those things in just four short months and has to be feeling ready for opening night.
After just 48 minutes of preseason action, and one anti-inflammatory back injection, the King returns with his men to play real NBA basketball against the Chicago Bulls in under eight hours. The game tips off at 8:00 PM in the United Center, and can be seen on TNT.
The Bulls will be trotting out Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler, Tony Snell, Nikola Mirotic, and Pau Gasol. Joakim Noah will be their super in shape sixth man, and Mike Dunleavy will warm the bench after having back surgery this offseason. Rose will be wearing a face mask.
The Cavs are starting Mo Williams, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love, and Timofey Mozgov. Both Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert will not be available for this game.
Staff predictions:
Ben Werth:Â Cavs 110, Bulls 100. Kevin Love starts his All-Star season by humiliating the Bulls overrated frontline. Chicago already misses Thibs.
Nate Smith:Â Cavs 106, Bulls 102. Bulls try to prove something. Kevin Love proves they can’t defend like they did under Thibs.
EvilGenius:Â Cavs 97, Bulls 91. LeBron’s sore back outlasts D-Rose’s broken face as Cavs start out strong on their quest for a championship.
Mike Schreiner:Â Bulls 101, Cavs 96. Lack of time playing together in the preseason hurts them, but it’s nothing to worry about.
Robert Attenweiler:Â Cavs 92, Bulls 86. The rested and mostly reunited Cavs give Chicago a taste of its own defensive-minded medicine, allowing their offense plenty of time to shake the rust off. And there is definitely rust to be shaken.
David Wood:Â Cavs 95, Bulls 88. Love demands a double team at the elbow, and the Cavs are able to hit their open 3s. Matthew Dellavedova accidentally hits D. Rose in the face and the game gets scrappy.
Stuff to watch for this game:
1. Is Tristan Thompson in basketball shape? He just reported to training camp this past Friday after signing a deal worth $82 million over five years.
2. Will LeBron be on a minutes restriction? It’s never good to get shots in your back.
3. How many times does Love touch the ball in the paint? He had 2.9 elbow touches and 4 post touches a game last season. The prior season in Minnesota he had 11.6 elbow touches and 7.4 post touches a night. The team has said they want him to be more than a perimeter threat this season.
4. Is Chicago going to be an offensive minded team this year? Fred Hoiberg is an offensive minded coach, but it will be interesting to see what the Bulls do if they can’t run their offensive sets against the Cavs. Do they keep trying to or do they resort to playing lockdown defense?
5. Can Tony Snell be the quasi LeBron stopper still? During the regular season last year, Snell slowed James dramatically. James must have mistaken Tony for Kawhi Leonard.
Let us know your predictions for the game below.
Detroit took out Atlanta. I’m telling y’all, keep an eye out!
Mo was tremendous.
He really did have a good game offensively. He got abused a little by Rose, but balanced it out with his scoring and passing…
He missed a couple open 3s down the stretch but overall cant blame him fir that. Had a pretty goid game, i would agree.
Yeah. Very solid. RJ was good too except that he didn’t really gave Lebron much rest on the second half.
Looked like an early season game. Guys were tired and defense was poor. I look forward to Kyrie and Shump returning in the coming months. Go Cavs!
I think we would have a really good chance of winning tomorrow against Memphis even if we rested Lebron.
Almost pulled it out and Cavs didn’t play very well. Some clutch shots/plays to catch up at the end. Nice to see KLove hit some clutch shots.
Despite no single play run for Kev, he still managed what 16 points? Please run a LOT of plays for him coach.
18 points I believe. He ha! Like 8 in the last minute or something absurd.
The thing that I’m most looking forward to was how are they gonna incorporate Kev. That’s the talk of the offseason with our offense but welp.. Also no LeIso yeah!!!! ?
Now EG gets to watch his boy, Steph. :D
Lol… I hope he gets stuffed by The Brow to end the game… of course, they’ll probably give him that call… since he’s the reigning MVP… ;)
Chill guys is OK ! The Bulls played great and the Cavs still had a chance at the end.
Can’t ask for more. I wonder if LeBron will play tomorrow?
I wouldn’t say the Bulls played great… Cavs played poorly, but still had a chance to win in the end. Not terribly upset, but disappointed to see some of the more basic mistakes…
Cavs outrebounded, out-assisted and had less turnovers than Bulls. Foul line was the difference…
They shot the 3 ball pretty bad. Bulls were +40% there.
Is nobody else going to point out that the Cavs were out of timeouts and there was clearly no inbounds play called there? I know it’s game one, but that’s pretty inexcusable…
Wasn’t there a timeout called after the Gasol block? Possibly from the Bulls side. They had the opportunity to design a play.
Even so… you want to have at least one left in that situation so Mo can call one with the five second clock running down. Doesn’t seem like they had anything discernable called for that last play…
Every single team in the league practices end-game situations like that… except for the Cavs.
Not the greatest play call at the end. If you have no TOs you have to be ready to pitch it deep. One game, moving on.
Great game to start off. I’ll take it. Saw a lot of good things, time to get to work.
Why TT was in during crunch time is beyond me. Wouldn’t even roll in the P/R
He’s a near max guy, gotta be in there. /s
Does a younger LeBron get blocked there? Great play by Gasol but cwean’t help but wonder.
only time I saw LeBron got blocked in crunch time before last season was in 2005. Sean May of Charlotte blocked him at the rim to end the game.
No. Also a younger Lebron won’t be put in that situation because at that point we already won the game and he be dancin’ on the bench.
That was a great block got to him credit…..go for the win now
I would if he hadn’t fouled him with the body….
Sorry EG. You’re not getting that in the last five seconds.
Jordan always did…
But they are not going to call that at that point of the game.
Well, not in Chicago anyway…
Congrats Chicago! You won NOTHING!
Ghosts of last year… no timeouts and no discernable play called for the inbounds play…
Freaked no move LeBron.
Oh well. At least they made it a game second half.
Pau got all ball, but he definitely fouled Bron with the body…
Definitely contact, but completely unsurprised there was no call.
Yeah. He never gets that call at the end of games. That’s why he normally doesn’t take it to the hoop there.
You’re never getting a body call in the last five seconds.
Jordan always did…
They should run the same play that got Kevin the low post opportunity and foul.
That’s a foul if the situation is reversed… just sayin…
Great job TNT with managing the score. You had one job!
Let’s go Cavs!
WOW!!! Hell, at least they made it interesting! Gotta go for a three to win, right?
Nice uncalled travel on the Bulls.
So now they decide to post Kevin? ???
KLOVE!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally, they called a foul on Bulls down low…
Kev’s gotta stuff that in.
Love really needs to start finishing around the rim. C’mon, man.
Might be too thin.
Just so we’re clear, it’s three fouls before it gets called, right?
If this game isn’t fixed by the refs, I just don’t know what to believe anymore. Awful calls against the Cavs almost every possession.
Strange game for Love. Almost no post plays at all the entire game. He’s so slim now, can’t really tell if can even take anyone on down there.
Ugh! I hate losing, especially to the Bulls. But I’ll give the Bulls an early season game, for a meaningful May match-up.
Ugh. Love not rolling, not rebounding, not getting inbounds. Not his best game.
It was a good game for the Cavs given the fact that they haven’t played together that much. The bulls role players played great for them.
Cavs can’t buy a shot right now… or a break…
Cavs in trouble if they’re not going to hit shots…
Makeup calls on snell?
How do you not box him out on that?
Obama looks good. Gonna miss him.
Same, it’s so disappointing to follow the 2016 campaigns.
You and the Bulls’ refs are enough to make me vote Republican.
Sad, decaying party. Shows the ignorance of the country.
Pretty funny Nate.
Refs not going to give anything to JR after he showed them up for the Tech…
NBA is a joke! Gotta make it interesting on the first game of the season.
Free Taco Bell breakfast November 5 because KC stolen base!!!!
JR gets hammered, no call. Touch on snell, foul. Refs giving this game to Obama.
Playing some 8 on 5 again
JR was fouled with no call, then they call the Cavs the other way. Merry X-Mas Chicago!
Did he even touch anything there?
Disparate amount of fouls called this quarter…
Nice four step drive.
Glad they showed the replay…. he clearly took at least three steps…
Seems like bulls are getting a lot of calls.
Why you need Moz in there in the fourth…
LeBron. Still great.
Need Mo buckets!
BS call on JR!!!!!!!!!
Gotta get JR outta there… too hyped…
“CLEVELAND SUCKS”?! Oh no they didn’t!!!
They’re still bitter from getting knocked out of the playoffs…
What was the foul there? He backed into JR’s elbow.
Bad call on KR.
Mirotic might be the second most punchable Bull.
I think this is the season he pushes for #1. What a chicken$hit foul.
Mirotic just made TT his *****
This will be Mirptics best game of his career.
*pats you on the head*
Nice pushoff there by Mirotic…
Yeah, sure looked like it.
Mo alley oop to TT looks just as good as the delly-oop to him last year.
James plus Mo!!! Love it.
Wow, nice move by Lebron.
Great pass from Mo to TT…
So gasol can just throw that elbow in Mo’s face whenever he wants?
Ha. It’s rose vs Mo!!!!
Mo. Killing it right now.
