Preview/Live Thread: The Finals, Game 7 (#AnythingCanHappen)
2016-06-19
“When you give a team life, give a team confidence, anything can happen in a Game 7.” – Paul Pierce
Way back when the 2015-16 NBA season started… all of 235 days ago, did you imagine it would end up here? Sure, it may not have been all that difficult to predict a rematch between the Cavs and the Warriors, given that they were each the odds-on favorites to capture their respective conferences… but could you have fathomed the historic significance of this one remaining Finals contest? Even as recently as a week ago… were you one of the stalwarts who believed in your heart that the Cavaliers could somehow, someway climb out of the 3-1 hole they had dug to force this seventh and deciding game?
No matter the victor, it will be an ending for the ages. One that will be long remembered in the annals of the sport. If Golden State holds serve at home in Oracle Arena (where they went 39-2 during the season, and are 11-2 in the playoffs), they will finish off arguably the greatest season in League history, cementing their place amongst the all-time elite teams. But, if Cleveland can parlay the momentum they’ve built behind their runaway locomotive of a leader, and rip glory from the jaws of what seemed like certain defeat a week ago, they will be the ones to carve their names into basketball lore. After all, in case you maybe hadn’t heard… no team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the NBA Finals. In fact, only two other teams had ever even forced a Game 7, and none in the last 50 years (the Knicks in 1951 and the Lakers in 1966), since before the ABA/NBA merger.
As Tom indicated in his brilliant piece yesterday… nobody really knows anything about how this will all play out. The patterns that have emerged (or haven’t as the case may be), the storylines, the history, the statistical information… none of it really matters in a Game 7. Everyone will leave everything they have on the court… from the MVPs to the X Factors… from the wiliest vet to the least used role player… to a man they will exhaust themselves in these final 48 minutes to capture a crown. There’s no next game that would require a monitoring of minutes played for guys like LeBron. There’s no next game for which guys like Draymond could be suspended. Win or lose, this is it. For one team, it’s a summer of jubilance… for the other a summer of second-guessing and might-have-beens.
So, which stars will shine brightest? Which MVP will prevail? Will the Splash Brothers break loose and throw cold water on the Cavs’ dreams of a victory parade? Or will LeBron and Kyrie continue to break down the once unbreakable Warrior D to dash the chances of a repeat? Which injury issue will loom larger… Iggy’s ailing back, or Kyrie’s banged up foot? Which missing man on offense will find his shot first, Harrison Barnes or Kevin Love? Who can push the right buttons at the right time… Steve Kerr or Ty Lue? How much of a factor will the refs be… and will Ayesha Curry break Twitter? These questions and so many more will all soon be a part of the amazing history of this game, this series and this season for the record books.
Beyond the game, there’s the question of what this will mean to the history of these two franchises, and their respective fanbases and cities.
If the Warriors find a way to finish things off on their home floor, they would effectively answer any doubters of their greatness. Their legacy would be ensured, and even those that debated the validity of their championship last year through the veil of significant injuries suffered by their opponents in literally every round of the playoffs, would have to tip their collective caps to this team. With 73 wins and a second straight championship, they would have to be considered a dynasty, and the odds-on favorites to do it again next year.
If the Cavaliers pull off the upset that many thought not just improbable, but downright impossible… the rest of the world should be put on notice for the audible roar that will be heard from downtown Cleveland. You know the numbers, so I won’t dwell on them here… but half a century of sports disappointment, bitterness and woe would evaporate in one glorious instant. LeBron James would fulfill his promise he and Lee Jenkins crafted so thoughtfully in the summer of 2014… finally bringing home a championship to Cleveland. The victory parade would not only be epic… it might require multiple days to complete.
I’m posting this early to get the conversation going, so there may still be changes to the lineups on each side. There may be multiple updates as we get closer to game time (8 pm EST), so look out for them. I’m also going to break from my habitual prediction of the winner and final score… not because I’m superstitious, but because, like so many others, I literally have no idea what’s going to happen. In the end, win or lose, I love this team and have been proud to cover it with our team at C:tB.
I will leave you with this… These teams have also had a history of playing on national holidays. Neither Christmas Day nor Martin Luther King Day worked out all that well for the Cavs. But today just happens to be Father’s Day. On a personal note… this is my first Father’s Day without my dad. He was the one who indoctrinated me into Cleveland sports, something I alternately loved and cursed him for over the years since my youth. Even though it’s been 20 years since I lived in Northeastern Ohio, not a day goes by that I don’t think about Cleveland. My dad was alive for the last Indians championship in 1948, and the last Browns title in 1964. He sadly never got to see a Cavalier championship… something I know he desperately wanted. He loved watching LeBron. He loved this team. I hope they win it for all the fathers who would love nothing more than to share a championship with their children. But, if they fall short… I will be comforted by remembering something my own father always said to me after tough losses…
“Son, it only hurts because you care. And, it’s good to care about Cleveland.”
Thanks dad. And thank you to all the fathers on this historic Father’s Day.
GO CAVS!

Too much street ball and we can not shoot.. The Warriors are a fundamentally sound team. They really have no weaknesses as a team. The CAVS are slow, can’t match up on defense. The Warriors will not quit or make a lot of mistakes. DEFENSE AND FREE THROWS WILL WIN THIS GAME!!!!!!!
Lebron picking up his dribble early too often tonight.
Wow. Ughly bucket but we’ll take it.
Great offense out of nothing by LBJ and KLove that time…
https://vine.co/v/5BBTeDXapXj
I truly would like to see the Cavs break the ” curse ” I just don’t see it happening
We will. Just stay put
Stay focused!! We got this!
bet if JR drives a foul is called on Curry he was up in air…refs woulve called it too…damn
This is kind of a boring game 7. I was expecting more energy from the Cavs. Are they seriously letting these elitist white collar Silicon Valley jaggoffs disrupt their play by making noise?
agree, barely any energy on the defensive end so far imo
Kyrie needs to take his own advice, “don’t reach”
They get a good shot of a simple screen and the Cavs just can’t do the same. And JR had a simple bounce pass opportunity and just pass the ball right to Curry.
why cant we have 5-7 minutes of good defense AND offense ?
JR went up weak. Don’t know what that was. Gotta dunk that.
We’ll talk more in a different thread, but i think basketball would be better if the 3 was worth like 2.25 or 2.5
They need to do something….I think they need to slightly shrink the rim, or increase the size of the ball….right now, the three ball is just too efficient, even if you shoot a low %
I agree.
That sucked.
game of runs here…cavs have to figure something out and lebron can’t hit outside shots
Jeez. Kyrie. Awful D. Just awful there.
First MVP play I seen from Curry in this series. Can’t believe he broke that up.
KLove has to put Curry on his azz on that breakaway…
Standard klove weenus play /smh
yepp..like he could have seen Curry coming from a mile away and still no hard contest
Warriors flopping all over the place.
Some bad TOs from the Cavs….cannot afford this crap…
What a horrible turn of events… gotta be smarter
UGH. Four point play, JR.
Ohhh JR………….
Good rally, now stop missing guys on defense.
Now they can exhale. Or we can, at least.
Hope this changes in the second half with NO uncontested 3
From ESPN Stats & Info: the Golden State Warriors attempted 14 uncontested 3-pointers in the 1st half. They’ve averaged 14 uncontested 3-pointers per game this postseason
important about timeouts is cavs not losing focus here need to guard perimeter like they did last possession
Let’s start rtaining threes now. Give them a taste of their own medicine. Don’t hesitate. Don’t go up soft. All in!
Keep riding JR as long as it is a good shot.
Let’s go Caaaaaaaaaaaavs
Come on Cavs
Alright need to take over and win everything from here.
So Nate , how long have you lived in Cleveland?
Wooo!!
Thanks nate for getting swish going
I rubbed some hot sauce on the jersey.
Did you take it out of a KFC bag?
I miss Delonte.
great start here in 2nd half….Cavs have to keep going after it here…once other guys step up then Lebron can take over
F yes!!
Big time response from the Cavs after going down 9!
21 minute fight!
Great job coming out of the half…thank you, JR
Kyrie shake and bake!!
God bless Festus Ezeli.
https://vine.co/v/5BBDZW5VJVh
If the Cavs win, I’m going to send Barnes and Ezeli a fruit basket.
They went back to switching Curry on LeBron.
SWISH AGAIN!!
https://vine.co/v/5BBpQ1O5MAF
Take over Cavs!
Eat it, Steve from NY!
Barnes is a lifesaver.
SWISH!!
https://vine.co/v/5BBpXEELOtZ
Gotta watch Klay this quarter… he is usually a handful in third quarters…
FEEL LIKE I HAVE JUST BEEN KICKED BY THE “GROIN REAPER ” AAAAAGH !!!!!
Yeah TT
TT with the soft touch…
https://vine.co/v/5BBpZrUDMhb
Would love to see Swish get going here…
There you go. Keep it coming JR
Peefexr timing
He heard you
https://vine.co/v/5BBdYXnFb2F
I SAID WHEN WE 1ST GOT FRYE ( AND HE DIDN ‘T PLAY ) GOING TO SAY IT AGAIN—WE TRADED FOR HIM TO DO WHAT –SIT ON THE BENCH ?——HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO AT LEAST GIVE US AT LEAST 8 PODUCTIVE MINUTES ????
Shumpert ( damn spell check)
Stumper will grow crocodile arms in the second half
If Schump/Mo play more than 15min combined in the second half, Lue needs to be fired right after the game… WTF
You’re damn skippy
warriors not running anything tricky on offense cavs have to stay with their man all the time
Get ready for Bray to win the least deserving FMVP ever if the Dubs win….
Defend like hell
Like I told you all, JR Smith is a choke
I’m having this game on mute the rest of the way….Cavs need to defend like crazy, can’t play bad defense on a do or die Game 7 on da damn road….didn’t see energy at all
Well, I got down on my knees and said my prayers to whatever gods were listening… Hopefully one heard them…
It’s not supposed to be easy!! Let’s hope the Cavs have the fire to step up to the moment!
Time to go TT RJ Lebron Kyrie JR Kev all second half
Lebron has 4 turnovers (8 as a team) and Warriors have 5 as a team.. we need to clean that up
Refs calling a tight game, and you’d think it’d favor the Cavs, but they’re not hitting their shots. Gotta loosen up.
Cmon aaaaarrrrgggghhh.. I can’t do anything on work right now
Just a monstrously bad half by Lue. The Mo/Shump backcourt? Not giving Love more burn? And the Cavs nervous as hell with their shots. Have to settle down and play.
And TT with only 13 minutes. Lue has really been bad so far. He better make up for it in the second half.
LeBron will be LeBron. We need Ky, Love, and JR to provide a spark.
It’s time to dig deep and go win a championship. We are only down 7 points. We are 1/20 outside the paint. Nobody is hitting three pointers. And our defense has been average at best.
Get back to playing championship defense and we win this game. Be relentless. Give 200% for the final 24 minutes, and go home a champion.
You should be giving them the half time speech haha
