Playoff Live Thread: Cavs vs. Celtics (#FlipTheGlitch)
2017-05-23After 10 straight playoff wins (13 straight if you count the Finals), many of the convincing variety… the Cavs finally, and unexpectedly, ran into their first glitch in the post season on Sunday. Yet, it wasn’t so much that they lost that was bothersome… but rather how they lost. Blowing a 21 point third quarter lead to an inferior and undermanned opponent, as they coasted to the finish line, was enough to make the average Cavs fan quote Keanu… “Whoa. Deja vu.” For the first time since the regular season, the Cavs seemed to replicate a bad habit of building large leads only to let them slip away as they took their collective foot off the gas. You only have to go back as far as the final week of the season to recall the historic 26 point choke job the wine and gold pulled against the Atlanta Hawks.
Still, this setback was a little different. Mainly because LeBron James reminded us that even he can be human some days. LBJ had a most un-Kingly 11 points (breaking his streak of 30+ scoring games), on just 4-13 shooting (0-4 from deep). He had just as many turnovers (six) as he had rebounds and assists, and generally seemed off of his game for most of the night. Other Cavs weren’t, as Kyrie, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson all had terrific performances that should have been enough to put the team in the win column, even with their leader’s rare below average game.
This is not to overstate either the importance of the loss, or to suggest that things didn’t have to break exactly right for the Celtics to steal Game 3. After all, Marcus Smart arguably had the game of his life filling in for the injured Isaiah Thomas. An abjectly terrible career three point shooter, Smart scored 27 points… with all but two of them coming either on made threes (7-10) or free throws after being fouled beyond the arc twice. That’s unlikely a sustainable occurrence. Likewise, Boston got incredible production out of both Kelly Olynyk (15 points on 5-8 shooting in 23 minutes) and seldom used forward Jonas Jerebko (10 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting in 13 minutes). And, they also got a tremendously fortunate bounce on Avery Bradley’s game winning three… not just because it went in, but also that it took so long to do so that it left the Cavs without even a second on the clock for a retort.
If the Cavs want to avoid seeing the black cat cross a second time in Game 4, they’ll have to flip the glitch by embracing the same mentality they had when they flipped the switch to start the post season. It starts and ends with defensive intensity. LeBron’s bad game aside, the Cavs played with noticeably less hustle on their traps and switches in Game 3 as they had in the previous two against the Celtics. Maybe they were overconfident… maybe they thought Boston would just roll over and die without their star PG… or maybe the Cavs just didn’t properly game plan given the Celtics no longer had to play 4-0n-5 themselves on defense. Whatever the reason, expect the Cavs to bounce back in Game 4… and for LeBron to channel his anger towards everyone who pissed him off on Sunday into a stellar performance.
Prediction: LeBron goes full Neo, and does his Superman thing, en route to helping the Cavs fix the glitch in their Matrix, and take down the Celtics 124-98.

Gif of last irving bucket pls?

Cavs outscored Celtics in 2nd half 65 -42ā¦.wow!
no effin around for Game 5ā¦.close it out and give them zero hopeā¦.that fans base will be going nuts Cavs got to get out early and get fans out of game
Wow that Irving move. I really hope that game didn’t cost us in bodies… missed opportunity last night.
Kyrie playoff career high 42
#defendtheland
LeBron finished it off… but Ky and Kev have both been huge the last two games…
Amen. Long term that is good thing.
Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love saved this game…
No question. Great effort by those two, and amazing shot making by KI
Well, I wasn’t expecting to win this one at the half…
Tonight’s MVP

Well, Mike P… I wasn’t as far off as thought in first half…
You rallied EG! Just one point off the Celts total
Looked like someone fell into Kev’s leg that last possession…
Sit love and irving bring in swish and shump
Ok, so now all of the Big 3 are hurting.
Seen a concerted effort by boston to hurt guys.
They are just ‘passionate’….they are too awkward to intentionally hurt anyone…just ask Simmons…if a team like that played one of the historical actually good Celtic teams, Simmons would be demanding hits on their players via twitter…
So weird. Korver has been out for his D more than his offense. He’s getting the rotations that JR and Iman were missing.
He’s actually missed several this quarter…but overall he’s been better yeah. Tristan needs to open his mouth and communicate on switches
Somebody just pull an Oubre and knock Olynyk down.
Cavs are shooting 78% in second half! 60% for the game!
Really? Wow!
ok, 2 minutes to win it.

KEVIN LOVE!!
Kyrie is limited now — keeping his feet under him so there’s no lateral pressure on the ankle. Lue should at least go offense-defense with him, if not just replace him.
And James is taking us home.
HAHA go take a seat Jerkyboy. You flopped. No call for you.
The balls to argue after that flop makes the Celtics soooo much more unlikable
Really pushes them to 11…most annoying team in the league…
IDK. Rockets, Dubs, Celtics.
Rockets are close just because when it comes to annoying, Harden is an MVP caliber turd. Warriors would be there, but they can at least play. This team is so full of mouthy, flopping scrubs that they are unbearable…
The way he showed up the refs, he should’ve been teched. I think after last year’s finals there’s been a playoff edict to cut down on the techs.
Can’t believe he didn’t get a T last game when he threw Love down and stood over him jawing like Cassius Clay over Sonny Liston.
Yeah, that’s saying something.
Screw you, Jerebko…
Hate jerebko what a whiny face
Go flop in the EuroLeague Jonas!
Jonas Je-flop-ko
Kevin Love’s d this game has been phenomenal
Completely agree!
Who would have thought? He is our most consistent defender all season long.
Where is our pace???
LBJ doing the prevent offense thing…
LeBron for three!
Jerebko nailing threes and talking shit. Like Draymond without the D and playmaking
That was a nononono YES! three from Bron…
How does someone get that wide open
Stupid Korver… can’t leave Jerebko…
James great bounce pass through a crowd to Tristan.
That was unreal. Couldn’t even tell what happened.
Amazing. How does he do that?
Bron starting to feel the passing…
Big-time 3 from Love
And then LBJ!
HUGE Love shot!
Has Thompson played the whole game?
He’s at 34 minutes — actually a minute less than LeBron.
Nope. Love, Irving, & James all with more minutes.
If I never see this stupid Mac and Cheetos commercial again, it will be too soon.
Cs getting some lucky bounces & most of the bad calls in their favor.
Celts have had the rubber rim on so many shots
I guess the good news about Bron’s 4 fouls is that he’s more rested…
Was this a legal move?
https://twitter.com/cavs/status/867207878402121728
i dont think so.
How many lucky bounces will go their way? It’s getting old.
Horford is such a never was. Most celebrated least accomplished player in the league.
Nonsense. Horford is excellent. He just isn’t a franchise level guy.
He is just so lauded and has gone nowhere. Lowe just a year ago was calling him a top ten player which is absurd to me.
Dangerous time. Gotta keep the momentum going. They got Kev a great look, but he was too strong on the shot. Kinda bummed we’ve gotten so little from Korver.
Yeah, would like to go back down to him another time or two to see if he can get going.
We’re not looking for korver. Like not at all.
so many chances to create some separation. just not doing it.
wow how many lucky shots does Hortford has already?
He’s had a four leaf clover jammed up his butt most of the playoffs…
Lol
He also had that near game winner against Washington in Game 6, before Wall’s 3. He admitted he didn’t want to bank that shot too.
Cmon Kev needed that easy jump hook
That play looked so nice until it rolled out.
how was that not foul on crowder like wtf hahaha
Another crazy lucky bounce for Boston…
I lost count of how many times Crowder hit LeBron on that drive. No call.
Korver shoulda shot that…
If LeBron didn’t get fouled on that drive… I’m the Pope…
Young Pope.
That shirt behind Brad Stevens is blinding.
Too early for prevent offense…
Another blown possession call…
Lullabye time. Hope Kyrie’s ankle is OK.
LeShot Clock awareness.
OMG he saw the clock on the other side of the court. Brilliant.
That was SICK!
Hope Korver is ready for some kicks from LBJ.
Kevin Love has been so great this quarter. Big three tonight have been fantastic.
I mean more of Love and Irving carrying the weight tonight.
What footwork by Lebron.. He has come so far as a basketball player as far as skill is concerned.
so nervous about this defenseā¦..just way too leaky
We need Good LeBron to hold them off.
Insane that until the 2nd half of the last game there was no reason to believe in anything else.
I really think Frye could have helped some this game… probably too late to stick him in there now though…
Wow bron double dribbled
Refs are atrocious right now. Smart is such a freakin cheater
Smart is a huge scrub…his flopping keeps him in the NBA…
Makeup no-call on that smart drive.
