Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors, Game 1 (#TryTryAgain)
2018-05-01The Toronto Raptors did not succeed against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 playoffs, losing in six games… so they tried again in the 2017 playoffs… and got swept. 2018 brings another year, and another opportunity to try, try again. Only, this matchup should be different because neither of these teams is really the same as they once were.
The team from the North may still have many recognizable names from their past two iterations, led by an All-Star back court tandem of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, and featuring big men Jonas Valanciunas and Serge Ibaka in their starting five. However, the difference isn’t only in their overhauled bench unit, but also in their overall philosophy of play as a team under head coach Dwayne Casey. The Raps have mostly transformed themselves away from an ISO heavy reliance on their star guards, and have embraced a balanced inside-out attack. They have real gunners on the perimeter, including CJ Miles, Fred VanVleet and Delon Wright, in addition to the already dangerous Lowry. Even DeRozan spent last summer focusing on his three ball with a decent degree of success. Add some length and energy in the form of Pascal Siakam and Jacob Poeltl, and there’s a demonstrable reason why Toronto finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Which leads to another thing that’s different… this being the first time the Raptors have home court advantage over the Cavaliers. That’s because the wine & gold limp across the border, battered and bruised from a roller-coaster season that landed them in the four seed, and led to a harrowingly physical series against the upstart Indiana Pacers. Injuries, roster upheaval and role uncertainty have all plagued the Cavs, requiring LeBron James to put forth a near superhuman effort to carry the team much sooner in these playoffs than anyone expected. Without some timely help here and there from the few veterans populating the Cleveland roster, the Raptors could have very well not even had the opportunity to try and redeem themselves against their biggest stumbling block to the NBA Finals.
So, all should be set up well for Toronto, right? They’ve got LeBron and the Cavs right where they want them, no? And, they’ll have all the fans in The Six screaming for possibly four home games, eh?
Yeah, not so fast. There’s a reason Canadians don’t typically have a high degree of confidence in these Raptors. Because when the pressure is on, they aren’t always the most mentally tough team. Sure, they finally exorcised the demons of playoff Game 1s in the first round against the Wizards (they had lost 10 straight Game 1s before that), but they also still seem to be at their shakiest when playing Cleveland. Even with this new, reconstituted squad, they went just 1-2 against the Cavs in the regular season… with the only win coming during that dark period when Isaiah Thomas started for Cleveland. They lost one of the signature games of the season (for the Cavs anyway) 132-129, when LeBron, missing five teammates and his head coach, scored 35 points with 17 assists and zero turnovers to overcome a 79 point half by the Raptors. During the second half of that game, Toronto reverted back to their old ISO ways as the Cavs applied pressure, and there’s no question Cleveland will look to do that once again.
No word yet on which starting five Ty Lue will incorporate in Game 1… although it does sound like George Hill’s back will allow him to suit up and be available…
Ty Lue wouldn't reveal his starting lineup for Game 1. Tristan Thompson was a hero in Game 7, but Jeff Green was very effective against the Raps in the Cavs' two regular season wins against them when they went small. Lue also said George Hill's back is "good" to go.

One thing for sure, however, if the Cavs hope to maintain their dominance over the Raptors, they will once again need some heroics from LeBron James, as well as solid contributions from their veterans. It would be a bonus to see one of their young guys (Hood, Clarkson, Nance Jr.) have a good series, but if the Cavs can defend the way they did against the Pacers (for most of the first round), they should have at least a decent chance to get back to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Sticking with my non-predictions for the playoffs, but I do think there’s a good possibility the Cavs can steal Game 1, especially if they can put the requisite pressure on the Raps.
Catch all the action on TNT starting at 8pm EST… and, as always, chime in below…
GO CAVS!
Why? A driving layup with 2 seconds left on the clock. Ugh
James makes a jumpshot. Try try try until you succeed I guess.
Can’t let that happen on an inbounds… smh
Big three from LBJ! Finally hit one!
BOOM
Listen to that crowd get quiet!
So glad I’m not a Raptor fan…
Weird how love is able to beat demar baseline
Kev looking engaged
Amazing this is a two point game…
Yeah TT!
Fantastic pass by Love
Not an easy shot by smith at all.
Two great passes in a row by kev.
SWISH!
James really wants to see if he can get his jumper going. Raptors super sloppy this game.
Raps making me realize just how good the Pacers were defensively…
Great pass, kev!
Why Bron? Don’t take that shot
CJ Miles had a firm grip on LeBron’s arm there…
I feel like I’m watching the inverse of the last series this game…
Love doesn’t foul on drives. Get it if he is worried about his thumb but would have been nice to hammer Siakam there.
Love is unplayable
Need to control the defensive rebounds to finish this game.
Argh JR. You cannot watch that ball go out of bounds.
Let love play the 4 and keep him away from physical play. It is the only way he is playable
Cavs are hanging tough… bodes well for the series…
Think the raptors have played kind of terrible. Sloppy. Maybe that continues.
They were good in the first half…
Gave up a gazillion turnovers and points off those turnovers.
Give the Cavs a little credit for those why don’t you ;)
It’s unbelievable that the Cavs still have a chance to pull this one with LeBron’s bad FT shooting and KLove’s poor offensive contribution.
Love hits a three. Yay. Now stop giving him the ball in dumb situations and he will probably do fine.
Pfft. Dumb possession. Trying to post love against a 2-3 zone. Yeah, an actual 2-3 zone. Watch the replays.
Exactly.
Kevin! Big three.
God, Love hits a couple…
HUGE three by Love that time!
Totally over the back by poeltle
LBJ looks disengaged this second half.
Fonally
Hopefully that gets Love going
Thompson the only one not playing like an idiot
Wtf got into tt
Terrible shot, Bron…stop
James will not roll. Think that is in his contract or something.
Clarkson gotta. Make that
James settles for a three after holding the ball for 13 seconds with Poetl ISO on him…..why?
Argh. LeBron.
Please LeBron to the hole against the big slow guy ! Horrible J
sometimes i feel like Lebron makes his teammates worse
How?
It happens occasion when he holds the ball and then throws a skip pass with 7 seconds to go which almost always results in a Contested three. That isn’t doing them favors. If the three is made, more a great shot than an easy shot.
Do not understand how kevin love was completely dominated physically against the pacers and then you place him on the most physical player on the raptor. Great strategy
This game is there for the taking. Let’s hope Lebron can work his magic. It would be nice if the Cavs try TT, KLove, KK, Jr and Bron.
It’d be nice if Love came in and hit some shots, but I have more confidence in anyone else shooting the ball…anyone else…
Has Lue lost confidence with Nance? Or does Ty have a strategy here?
You forgot the /s
“Going with guys he trusts”
Kind of think tt will probably grab nances minutes. I don’t think you can stop playing love. Dude’s confidence may not recover. Just have to play him with TT or Nance from now on.
Cavs lucky they are only down 5. Bad qtr. Bad offense. Love at 5 not working and Lue takes way too long to sub.
Well, kept it in reach with Lebron sitting… too bad Korver couldn’t hit that follow…
Could been a hell of lot worse. I hate to say it, but kev can’t play in the fourth. Rather see Nance.
Imagine if we had a competent coach.
Sigh Clarkson.
Tt bailing out a dumb green iso
Close to start the 4th, I like this.
TT playing some great minutes here…
Green bad tov and then three point play for siakam.
TT’s shot looking much more confident
Dunno what hood was doing on that shot with a 7footer on him. Turned out about as expected. Tt gets board and jump ball thankfully
Hood makes his shots attempts more difficult than they need to be.
Banana in da tailpipe…
Raptors playoff inexperience showing.
Their bench’s
Raptors are trash. Worst number 1 seed in years
You’re forgetting the Celtics last year…
Rodney got fouled. By poeltle. Rodney gotta exaggerate that contact
Meh he shot a j with a 7fter all over him. Dumb
Terrible possession by Hood… partially saved by TT
TT!
C’mon fellas, hold on!
Lue does sit Bron for a couple… nice
TT with a great tip in!
Korv r hits another contested three nearly blocked. Thank god he is hitting contested shots.
