Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Celtics, Game 5 (#BestofThree)
2018-05-23I was tempted to make George Hill the poster child of this Live Thread… mainly because his number is “3” and because when he plays well, he brings out the best in the Cavs. However, since Mike covered G Hill’s effect on the Cavs in depth last week, I settled on a shot of the other crucially important matchup in this deadlocked Conference Finals. Kyle Korver is 16 years older than Jaylen Brown, but he’s been able to match the young Celtic’s energy and hustle over the last two games. Even though Brown wound up leading Boston in scoring (25 points) in Game 4, it took him an inefficient 23 shots to get there. Three of those were blocked by the craftily defensive Korver, who I always forget has good size at 6-7 (kind of like how Ty Lue forgets how old Kyle is).
Now that both teams have held serve at home, the series has effectively been shrunk to a “best of three” scenario… which you no doubt learned on Monday night when it was literally the most used quote by the President Genius Celtics hive mind in the post game pressers. Boston would presumably hold the advantage given that two of the three will be played in the always loud and annoying TD Garden… a place where they boast a 9-0 record in these playoffs. However, it’s never all that wise to bet against LeBron James winning at least one road game in a playoff series… in fact, outside of last year’s Finals, James has won a road playoff game in the other 32 previous series. He is unfortunately 0-3 on the road in Game 5s against the Celtics in his playoff career though, so he’ll look to change that tonight.
For the Cavs to put the first post season blemish on Boston’s home court record, their role players will have to exert even more of the hustle and intensity they put on display during the last two games in Cleveland. It will take more stifling defense, more teeth-rattling screens and more Kyle Korver blocks and floor burns. It will also probably take more threes from all of the Cavs’ gunners. They went just 8-23 from deep in Game 4, but still won by nine. A few more of those go in, and the game is likely not in doubt past the end of the third quarter. Korver went 2-5 from downtown and Brown wound up 2-6. Something tells me whoever can win that particular battle will make the difference tonight.
The rumblings are that President Stevens might switch things up in his starting contingency, and that he might go more defensive early with either Aaron Baynes or Marcus Smart (or both) to begin. Hard to say for sure, since Brad is keeping things close to the vest…
Brad Stevens says he doesn’t reveal lineups at media avail—as opposed to recent years, when he did—because he didn’t know he didn’t have to until before shortly before tip-off.

Ty Lue, on the other hand, will likely stay with what’s been working the last few games with Tristan Thompson in the starting lineup along with LeBron, Kevin Love, George Hill and JR Smith. We’ll see if any adjustments made by the President will force more tinkering by Ty.
Sticking to my non-predictions of playoff games, but I will say that I believe the Cavs will win once in Boston… either tonight or Game 7.
Catch all the action starting at 8:30pm EST on ESPN… and, as always, chime in below with your thoughts…
Hill with some hustle.
Headed for another 85 pt night.
Sit down Ainge, you douche…
Too many defensive lapses… no plan on offense…
Gotta foul there, Bron.
Another TO. FCUK.
No chase down block by James. Not even an attempt. Wow.
Love seems to be the only one bringing it tonight
And Nance…
Nance.
Gotta play D without fouling. No more free ones.
Tatum literally just takes the same side step shot every time… shouldn’t be that hard to defend…
Green for Smith. Be careful what we wish for.
Smith has been less than useless, so I’ll take Green in that trade…
Don’t worry guys. Jeff Green is back. All will be good now.
Oh, goodie…Jeff Green…
lue keeps JR way too long all the time.. when things aren’t going in.. u have to take JR out.. he doesn’t just suddenly show
Stupid foul JR. Momentum killer.
Sub JR. Jesus.
Jeff Green of course.
Get JR the F out of there…seriously, wtf, JR…
There we go. If Houston can come back from 12 down in the 4th at Oracle, we can do this.
More Love in the post please. Nice feed to James
Wow. Fantastic pass love and a a finish by an exhausted looking j
I’m done watching this one.
Lue needs to be fired between quarters.
Other than Love and Korver, no one else that Lue is playing will be rotation player for a playoff team next year unless of course Lebron comes back.
Not entirely untrue…
This crap is unwatchable
Jesus, George, how do you miss that badly? Even Nate Smith makes that shot…
:p
Back to 15. Damn. Time to bear down & attack.
George Hill. Whaaat was that?
Cavs blow a 5 on freaking 4
Could have been 8… now it’s 15
Cavs will win this game
Get JR out!
JR just can’t hit anything but his scoop shot tonight…
What the hell was that floater Bron?
Cavs within 10. 6-12 FTs.
So many missed FTs…
Great D kev!
Love rejection!
that Love block could be big
hes played banes well
BLOCKED BY LOVE!
Weird… both JR and Hill score their first buckets in the last minute
Hill with bucket #1.
JR and Hill. Two shots in a row.
Things are changing?
More of that G Hill!
This is a perfect game for Love to go nova. Someone has to step up, and he can.
Down 15. JR scores on some iso.
JR finally on the board… 21 mins in…
How do you let Tatum get that off?
Get JR out.
Get JR the hell out…he has nothing tonight…
Get JR out of there.
Nice aggressive back down from Love…
Did he just turn it over again? Ugh.
Way to start the post-commercial posession…
I can not believe the Cavs stil have JR Smith as a starting shooting guard, or he plays 75 percent of the game scoring 0 points. ! He may start for team’s that did not make the playoffs but he will not be a CONSISTENT difference maker.
james is either tired… checked out… don’t care….want to go to Caribbean early… or all of the above
just checked to see score via espn.. haven’t watched a minute, nor will i.. CLE got a gift from LBJ last 4 years.. the man is super-human.. sadly, i think he leaves, and will not blame him at all.. the celtics are loaded.. the team of the next decade or so.. they have the best combo of luck and smarts.. (you think ainge would have wasted a #1 on bennett!!).. could have had olidipo.. bird said he used to practice 700-800 shots a day.. to keep up with magic.. i can’t believe any of these guys take 100.. time to… Read more »
You know… I was thinking of deleting this comment… but I think I’ll just let you get roasted by actual Cavs fans…
i am a clevelander, born and bred.. i am not reveling in this.. i am sick, even when i don’t watch.. just venting spleen.. not a celtics fan.. not a fan of any team.. just telling it like i see it.. how do these guys go from smoking the celtics on their first game together, and then OKC.. to this? LBJ needs some help.. and his support is minor league..
Venting is easy… we all do it… your last line in particular makes you seem extremely trollish…
the last team the cavs should have traded kyrie to was the celtics.. that was perhaps one of the dumbest moves in pro sports in decades.. so, gilbert wanted olidipo, ans allowed grant to draft bennett, but then he wanted IT etc? who knows what the truth is, but they were very stupid, franchise-destroying moves.. so the celtics are close to going up 3-2 on the cavs, without hayward and kyrie, and i am supposed to wave the flag and say “go team”.. nope.. did that through the 60s with the indians when i was a child//
sadly.. the celtics also have something like 6 or 8 1st round picks over the next few years.. who can the cavs trade to try and get kawhi? love? (love and additional bodies?) or is gilbert going to drop @200 million on payroll?.. the celtics have built a juggernaut, and still have massive flexibility.. I AM NOT A CELTICS FAN.. they can trade kyrie and a few 1sts for kawhi.. and we will have the number 8 pick.. trey young??? really?? LBJ gonna stay to play with peewee herman?
we had daddy wags and little vic.. and the yankees had mantle..
thanks for stopping by bud
You have a lot of takes for someone who refuses to watch games…
You have got to be kidding
…………… what is this dude on about?
No energy from the starters…
I’d rather win tonight than face Game 7 in Boston. Idk if the Cavs are mailing it in, tired, or just all coincidentally off during the same game.
James…dude…gotta be sharper
LeBron is checked out mentally.
Lue is an idiot for playing JR to start the quarter.
damn james… TOs killing us.. and not making shots when Celtics are cold… could easily have gotten within 2-3 possessions.. but now 13 pts again…
LeBron again with the careless passing.
He is a prolific passer and makes some good ones. But he also forces a ton & turns it over.
Not a great QB. Too many TOs. And another.
Another five point swing. That’s two this game. Brutal. James is just off tonight.
Lebron is playing us out of the game. It should be a 5 point game.
Korver or Cedi for JR or it’s over…
Certainly looks like a JR -20 game…
Cedi can’t play, though…foreign rookie…
Turnovers equal loss
Dammit Bron. That hurt.
What a terrible sequence by LeBron… JUST DRIVE TO THE DAMN HOOP DUDE!
Sigh…this sucks
LeBron is tired already?
Cavs right there but have to stop taking the good shot and look for the great shot.
Jsmes off a bit ronif
D finitely ronif…
Ronif all day long…
