Live Thread: Pistons @ Cavs
2023-02-08Good evening CtB!
The Cavs welcome the Detroit Pistons to the shores of Lake Erie for a classic Central Division showdown, a game that will be made much harder to win for the Cavs given the breaking injury/rest news:
#Cavs Donovan Mitchell (groin soreness) and Darius Garland (thumb soreness) are both OUT tonight against Detroit, sources tell @clevelanddotcom. Raul Neto and Caris LeVert will be stepping into the starting lineup, sources say.
— Chris Fedor (@ChrisFedor) February 8, 2023
Ironically, the Cavs played without both DG and Spida and blew out Detroit in their first matchup of the season 112-88. But in that game NBA Champion Kevin Love played an instrumental part (21 points, 10 rebounds, +30 plus/minus in 23 minutes) especially on the offensive side to help win that game. Perhaps KLOVE will make a return? Stay tuned.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:00PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes, Go Cavs!

So we need to actually play our best and win the games we need to win and stay competitive with the tougher matchups.

If we can stay consistent and healthy and reach 2nd in the East, that would be huge !!
Knicks at Philly tonight. If Philly wins, we solidify our hold on a top 6 spot. If the Knicks beat them, we are closer to #3.
What’s your preference ? I want both in general.. The ones above us and below us losing. .. we also need to win the games we need to and not play down and be inconsistent.
I want NY to win. If we play well the last 25 games, they should not be able to catch us.
If NY is playing Boston, Milwaukee, or Philly, then go Knicks! Anyone else? I hope they lose. Well, maybe not Denver (ahead of us), Memphis (close to us), or Dallas/Phoenix.
But I certainly understand the “safety first” approach. Philly blew two 20 point leads last week. One to NY. A bit wobbly with a tough schedule incoming.
Philly (1st), NY (4th), Brooklyn (5th), and Milwaukee (7th) all have pretty tough closing slates.
Tonight is tough & then a b2b. Philly before the break.
After the break is tough. A Denver/at Atlanta b2b. Tor, at Bos, Det, Boston, at Miami, at Miami.
Easier after. Home for Philly & NY and twice away in Brooklyn is a tough as it gets after that. At Atlanta. No back to backs after Den/at Atl.
Philly looks like they’ll win, up 6 with 80 seconds left.
BTW, congratulations to Browns OT Joe Thomas and Bengals CB Ken Riley in making the HOF. Much deserved in both cases. Too long overdue in Riley’s case, and sadly, posthumously in Riley’s case. At least his family can be there.
Riley is only the 2nd Bengal to get in (Munoz).
Jimmy Haslem is planning to buy part of the Bucks. Here’s our chance to advance in the standings.
Hahahahahahahaha
They are gonna need his money when Giannis needs another contract.
For me, in the East:
Top Tier: Milwaukee & Boston
Next Tier: Philly, Cavs, Heat
———–
Straddling #6/Play In: NY, Nets, Hawks, Raptors
———-
Trying for 10th: Bulls, Pacers, Wiz, Magic.
Wemby: Pistons, Hornets
I think I agree with you. But Cavs have held down that #2 net rating and #1/2 defense the whole season. At some point it’s not just flukey right? And that’s with Mitchell, Garland, and Allen all missing time.
I know they haven’t proved anything yet and that certainly puts a gap between the Cavs and the top dawgs.
I tend to be a “show me” guy in the NBA. It is pretty rare for a team with no playoff experience to make the Finals. Usually the core has to get there, fall short and improve.
The Big 3 Celtics kind of did it. But KG & Allen had made deep runs before and Pierce had PO exp (I believe). Mitchell & LeVert are our only guys. Allen, maybe 1 year? Rubio has some. Nothing beyond Rd 2 besides Kev.
Osman has also been to the finals.
True enough. He was mostly watching, though.
and in the big 3 Celtics game 7 against the Cavs it appeared the refs would not let Boston lose under any circumstances.
The Cavs taking that Boston squad to 7 games is an underrated series
It was without question the toughest anyone played Boston that entire postseason, even though (if I remember correctly) all their series went 7. The Lakers laid down for them in Game 7 of the Finals.
The Pierce/Bron duel was that year, correct?
And the “no regard for human life” dunk?
I don’t think we are flukey. We’re good. We are better faster than I thought we’d be after adding Michell. That 8-1 start without DG was amazing. The D has held up better with those 2 in than I thought it would. The O has held yp better with Ice starting than I feared.
But I just think our high end guys are not at the level of some of the others (Giannis, Curry, Durant, Tatum, Jokic, Embiid, Luka, Butler) nor has our core been battle tested together like some others (GSW, Bucks, Miami, Suns, Nuggets).
I’m not expecting too much THIS year, but Cavs are kind of built the right way for playoff success. Elite defense and a pair of dangerous isolation scorers.
True. My worry is we need better shooting from our “others.” Currently, we have 4 rotation guys above league average of 36%: Garland 41.5%, Mitchell 38.6%, Wade 41.7%, and LeVert 36.7%.
The Nets have 8. Wanatabe 49.1%, Johnson 45.5%, Curry 42.5%, Harris 41.3%, Thomas 40.7%, O’Neale 40.0%, Bridges 38.7%, Mills 37.2%.
Nor do we have a post-up guy.
I just think we are probably 1 year away.
Don’t get me wrong. Fight for that #3 seed. I think we are favored in Rd 1. Though Miami or Toronto would suck. I am not a believer in Harden/Embiid come crunch time. Jimmy Butler is a different story, though. I could even see us upsetting one of Boston/Milwaukee. But both?
Though I’d note Okoro is up to 35.5% and has been rising steadily since that awful start. Over 40% the last two months and darn near 50% since January. On low volume, but still.
And has gotten a lot better attacking closeouts.
West:
Top Tier: Suns, GSW
Next: Nuggets, Grizz, Clippers, Pels (w/Zion)
—————–
Straddling 6th/Play In: Kings, Mavs, Wolves, Lakers
Battling for 9th/10th: Blazers, OKC, Jazz
Wemby: Rockets, Spurs
IDK how the standings will play out. So tight. I guy staying out a bit longer or not getting back to full speed could make a big difference.
I don’t think the Mavs or Lakers have the horses. Though enough to win a series under the right conditions. 2 max. Not 4.
No luck for the Cavs:
The NBA has officially named Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, Kings guard De’Aaron Fox, and Raptors forward Pascal Siakam as injury replacements for next weekend’s All-Star Game in Salt Lake City
Interesting too since those 3 teams have worse records, although the Kings are pretty close record-wise.
There was an argument for Fox, Garland, and Brunson but I think Darius is having the most impactful season. And he’s improved by most measures since last year when he made the team.
I think two of the players had to come from the Western conference, although Kyrie and Durant migrated from the East.
IF I AM THE CAVS I GO “ALL IN ” FOR WINNING TOMORROW NIGHT GAME AGAINST THE BULLS—IF WE NEED TO REST SPIDA// DG 1 MORE NIGHT OR LIMIT THEIR MIN’S —DO SO—–BELIEVE –EVEN IN LEBRONS YEARS HERE // THE LAST TIME WE WON IN NO’S WAS LIKE 2010 —–SO BE SMART JB
AGREE WITH NATE —-SOMEHOW —-WITH THERE SO CALEED ” HANDSCUFFED” TO POSSIBLY IMPROVE —-DID SO—-THINK THEY COULD BE DANGEROUS COME PLAYOFF TIME ——“THE ALIEN ” WANTS 1 MORE LEBRON PLAYOFF RUN AND POSSIBLY CHAMPIONSHIP // WILL BE A ‘STORY LINE ; TO DO IT THE SAME YEAR HE BROKE KAREEMS RECORD
CURIOUS WHAT THE ‘ASKING ” PRICE FOR ROYCE WAS—-AM SURE LEVERT HAD TO BE PART OF THE DEAL —-NO WAY WERE THEY GOING TO SETTLE FOR WINDLER// KLOVES CONTRACT // A 2ND ROUNDER —–I KNOW JASON POSTED YESTERDAY THAT CAVS SAID ” SOMETIME ” WE WILL SEE WINDLER PLAY —WTF IS ‘SOMETIME “—IS IT NEXT YEAR WHEN HE IS PLAYING OVERSEAS ??—MAN HAVE REALLY BEEN BUMMED WITH HIS INJURIES SINCE HE WAS DRAFTED AND THE CAVS BEING SOMEWHAT” SECRETIVE” ABOUT HIS HEALTH// INJURIES
Fedor said they wanted more than they paid for him, which was a first round pick, which they sent to Utah for him.
Did we offer 5 2nd’s instead?
everybody has been overpaying for players this year. good time to sit on your hands.
Curious if DG or DM play tonight, and the whole approach to the back-to-back. For selfish reasons (going to the game tomorrow!) I’d kinda like them to the take their chances with the bench tonight and be at full strength for the Bulls.
I’m fairly certain they’re playing.
They’re not listed as Questionable or Probable, or on any injury report. But Rubio is.
Looks like Rubio is out tonight.
With DG & Spida good to go tonight it might be strategic. They are both well rested having sat out Detroit. Rubio cannot play b2bs. He is only playing 1 of the next 2 anyway. Save him for the b2b where DM/DG will need more rest and/or may tweak the groin/hand and gave to sit.
Fedor mentioned that the Cavs went hard after Royce O’Neill but the asking price was too much. Apparently Royce is “best friends” with DM too. He also said that the only way Love is getting back in the rotation is if someone gets injured, which seems silly to me. I don’t understand why JB can expand his rotation? 🤦♂️
And lastly the Cavs have to extend LeVert.
Short rotations from defensive minded coaches seems really counterintuitive to me. Good defense seems like it would require higher exertion, and you’d benefit from keeping legs fresh. I dunno.
The west is a joke this year. Not saying the champ cant come from the west…but whoever gets through the western playoffs is going to have had it incredibly easy compared to most years. So of course it will be the warriors
I think the Suns come out of the West, if Durant is healthy. The flat earther will bolt for LA.
I don’t think people realize how much better the Lakers got, and how well DRuss, Beasley, and Vando match Lebron’s skillet. They have a puncher’s chance. Think the west got significantly better in Dallas, LA, GS, and PHX.
Lakers need to sit AD till the playoffs.
If AD sits, there is no playoffs for them. Maybe even if he plays.
For me, I do not think Bron is an elite player any more. I have watched several Lakers games & he REALLY struggled to score come crunch time. With some shooting around him, that should help. And AD is so injury prone.
Pelinka knows they are not really contenders, if he thought they were, he’d have spent both FR picks. They had to get Russ out of there (dumbest trade I have EVER seen bringing him in). This gets them into the play-in (most likely), but that is about it. Den/Mem/Phx in Rd 1 means goodbye.
Spida & DG are reportedly good to go for NO.
Now is the time to start playing winning BB! Finish at least 4th in EC, good chance for better!
It’s early but Bulls up by 11 on Nets.
Smoking Joe Harris is now lighting up the Bulls with 6 threes in third quarter
DeRozan is an overrated chucker!
All 18 points in one quarter.
The Bulls are a real bummer
They miss Ball badly. LaVine dominates the ball and turns it into a chuckfest.
Next year’s SF FA crop via spotrac. Slim pickings.

I WOULD HOPE TO THINK—ESPECIALLY WITH HIS RECENT PLAY—THAT DG WOULD BE ADDED—–SCOOPER/// SAM ” MY MAN ” MERRLL DNP FOR ALMOST 2 WEEKS WITH THE CHARGE —–DID AN NBA TEAM(S) PICK THEM UP —–RESTING ??—-INJURED ??
No Curry, Durant, or Jaylen Brown for AS game. I wonder if Garland and/or Allen could get added now?
Also not sure Zion will be playing either.
I am not sure which conference Durant will be replaced from, East, I assume. Nor how Irving switching conglferences will work.
So the East needs 1 Froncourt player & 1 guard. I’d go with Jimmy Butler & Garland. Silver will likely pick Harden/Trae Young/Brunson and Siakam.
I’d expect Fox or Booker to replace Curry and AD to replace Zion. I’d go Booker & Aaron Gordon (Denver deserves 2).
It doesn’t matter because they Giannis and LeBron are doing the draft 1 hour before the AS game. So it doesn’t matter if you were in the east or west.
which is why there is now no point in having separate votes for the East and West.
I’ll try and call Adam Silver to work this out.
LMFAOOO hell yeah Arch, you got connects!!!!
It matters in terms of which conference you pick a replacement from.
while the “pick – up” format is kind of fun, at makes conference affiliation meaingless. What is the point of picking the best players in your conference if they won’t be on your team? And is Durant still the captain of the East?
Giannis was and is
oops, right. what would happen if Durant was a ASG captain? Two west guys pick?
HEY BUCKAROO——THE MRS NOMAD SAYS MY ” BONE DENSITY BETWEEN MY EARS IS RATHER DENSE “………..” MORE BEER PLEASE ” !!

Other potential buyout candidates:
– Ibaka
-Terrance Ross
– Will Barton
– Dedman
– Reggie Jackson
None of these move the needle
So, given where we are at, thisis my best guess at our needs going forward into next season.
Signed: Garland, Mitchell, Okoro, Mobley, Allen; Rubio, Wade, Osman (non-guaranteed), Stevens (Team Option). All 5 starters plus 8/9ths of the rotation and 9 of our top 10.
1) We need to re-sign LeVert. Signing him should not impede our ability to use the full MLE as well.
2) A playable backup C. A true C.
This is Lopez’s spot. But he is damn near unplayable. Diop was drafted last year & could be ready next. A vet min type, using our $4 mil TPE from the Ajbagi trade, or the 2nd round pick couod fill the void next year. Tricky as this player will not play much/any when JA & Mobes are healthy. Unlike other spots, we do not have a solution on the roster currently.
3) A floor spacing big. Love’s spot.
Love is an option here. Again. As is elder Mobley if he develops. Saric if he is bought out might work this year.
4) Reserve combo forward who can defend.
This is Wade’s job. And Llama’s. Play some 3. Big enough to play as PF when only one of JA/Allen isin the game. Be wonderful if they could also shoot.
5) 3 & D wing or a sharpshooter who is st least playable on the wing. Windler’s spot.
This is likely the MLE. Not a lot of great options.
6) 3rd PG. Neto’s spot.
Bring him back is my preference. But with Rubio likely gone in 2 years, having a successor for Rubio to mentor might not beca bad idea, either. Cooper, 2nd rd pick, or Neto.
Basically, while think our 6-10 spots could be upgraded (Okoro, LeVert, Wade, Cedi, Stevens, I think it better to keep them (4 are signed cheap anyway), and our cap/1st round pick situation makes upgrades difficult. Those guys are all playable, as is Neto.
I we should concentrate first on upgrading the non-playable guys (Lopez, Windler, maybe Love) and using the MLE to give us the best pisdible boost for the open spot.
anyone know how Diop is doing this year?
https://www.basketball-reference.com/international/players/khalifa-diop-1.html
Kind of hard to tell with the Spanish League & Euro stats seperate, and divergent sometimes.
Minutes (20 per), FGA, FT%, points, blocks, and rebounds all seem up. FG% steady.
MPG/PPG/RPG/APG/SPG/BPG; FG%/FT%
Euro: 19.5/9.8/5.6/0.6/0.6/1.0. 68.0%/68.6%
Spain: 21.6/7.6/5.2/0.5/0.5/0.9. 55.1%/60.0%
You should write for this blog I know.
Damn straight
I am not worthy.
you provide more good data than the rest of us combined.
good. might be ready soon. do I recall that Cedi did not come to the Cavs for several years?
WILL THROW OUT ANOTHER POTENTIAL BUYOUT—NOEL —-YES // NO ?
I think a playable backup to Allen is our most glaring roster need.
Agreed. Why I wanted Boucher. Need bodies to throw at the Eastern Conference bigs.
The Clippers who need PG help traded both of their PGs. 😂😂😂
Either Russ is headed their way or they think Eric Gordon is a PG.
I don’t think even the most delusional NBA FO thinks Gorgon is a PG.
DOES MASON PLUMLEE OR TERRANCE ROSS MOVE THE NEEDLE FOR ANYONE HERE —–I AM THINKING —-YES IT MOVES THE NEEDLE ” IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION “
The Clips had nada in terms of bigs after Zubac. I watched them twice last week, when he sits or is in foul trouble, they get stomped inside. Kawhi at C, or old Morris. It was brutal. Powell & Claxton destroyed them.
SARIC IS THE PLAYER CAVS SHOULD BE PURSUING
BEY TO HAWKS COULD// SHOULD HELP THEM——-WISEMAN TO PISTONS AT LEAST GIVES THEM HEIGHT ———ALOT OF MAJOR// AND OTHER TRADES COULD // WILL CHANGE THE LANDSCAPE OF THE NBA —-STANDINGS AND PLAYOFF S
I actually was puzzled by that Wiseman to Pistons. Detroit drafted Duren. Young, raw, athletic C. Wiseman ain’t taking his minutes.
Did Altman say anything other than not 5alking buyout with Kev?
” SOMETIME ” THIS YEAR IS RATHER VAGUE —I MEAN HE SPRAINED HIS FRIGGIN ANKLE IN FRIGGIN PRE-SEASON
Yes it is. But how can you give a concrete answer with Windler. We should call him, “the setback.”
He’s been out 5 months with a sprained ankle.
toothpick was toast on day 1.. his bone density is like an infant
HOW IN THE HELL DO THE LAKERS DO IT EVERY FRIGGIN YEAR—-SUPPOSEDLY ” HANDCUFFED” TO REALLY MAKE ANY DEALS AND LOOK HOW MANY THEY MADE —–IN MY OPINION THEY UNGRADED ALOT AND COULD BE A PROBLEM FOR ANY TEAM IN THE PLAYOFFS —–ONLY FOR A ” LEBRON ” TEAM —GIVE HIM ONE LAST RUN —STORYLINE IMPENDING // YOU HEARD IT HERE 1ST
Maybe. Nate thinks so. I agree the West is weak, but I am not a big fan of DeRo. Neither were the Wolves.
I think LeBron has crossed over. He can no longer be Batman on a title-winning team. Robin, yes. Alfred or Commissioner Gordon would be better, but he still wants Batman money. I don’t see AD as a Batman, either.
DAMN JASON YOU /// WE DID IT AGAIN—-YOU POSTED RIGHT BEFORE I DID—–ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME TOPIC—–YES ” GREAT MINDS DO THINK ALIKE “——–.” MORE BEER PLEASE—-FOR THE BOTH OF US ” !!
WITH ALL THE RUMORS// POSTS HERE AT CTB// GLAD KOBY MADE THE DECISION NOT TO ‘GIVE ” AWAY PLAYERS //—— IS WINDLER HEALTHY ?/—ARE WE GOING TO GET A GLIMPSE OF HIM AFTER ALL STAR BREAK TO SEE WHAT HE CAN OR CANNOT DO// STAY HEALTHY—-AND A YES TO ” PUT KLOVE IN A BUBBLE ” UNTIL MARCH AND THEN HOPEFULLY ” UNLEASH ” LAST YEARS KLOVE —-IF ICE CONTINUES TO GROW/// SPIRAL UPWARD THAT IS ALMOST LIKE MAKING A TRADE/// UPGRADE WITHOUT HAVING TO DO SO
Last update on Windler was that heis expected to play sometime this year. Nothing more specific. A couple games ago I saw him on court doing some stuff pre-game.
I think our approach was wise & not unexpected. Again, I think watching how this group looks in a PO setting & then assessing. Watching them with Rubio at PG more often. Watching them with more consistent starting roles (Okoro starting) and LeVert, Wade, Osman the other rotational pieces.
Neto is known. We’ll see if a rested, healthy Love can give us anything. We might even get to see if Windler can do anything without getting hurt.
My only worry is that we might have had more flexibility here than we will after the season when we re-assess. But maybe we never had much of a chance of getting anything of value with a Love trade.
Yeah. That is fair on Love. That boat has sailed. But if we made a deal, we’d likely have had to eat future salary. Teams are “interested” in Love as a buyout, not in trading $28 mil of salary for him, unless it is a salary dump.
Keeping Caris + Love trade = cannot use full MLE for the length of bad salary contract.
No Love deal + keeping Caris = ability to use full MLE in future seasons.
We went with option B.
Thanks for that explanation. I didn’t realize we wouldn’t be able to use the full MLE in your option A.
I guess it could depend on what LeVert signs for and how much salary we would have eaten in the Love deal.
We have close to $125 mil locked in next year, counting Cedi & Stevens. For 9 players. $15 mil for Caris and an $11 mil MLE gets us to $151. The tax is $162 and the apron is $168. If we eat $15-$20 mil in salary we are in the tax and over the apron. And still have 4 open slots.
My best buyout/pickup candidates:
1) Danny Green (wing)
2) Dario Saric (shooting big/forward)
3) Any kind of playable backup C.
You forgot Westbrook /s
Are they buying out Saric? Yes please.
Late trade to OKC. No way to know for sure, but rumor has it.
We’ll have lots of company for Saric & Green. But if wexeant help for this year’s run, I cannot really think of a better use for our open #15 spot.
I heard the trade mentioned on NBATV a couple times, but cannot find it elsewhere. Maybe I was misled.
There it is: Saric + 2nd to OKC for F Darius Bazley.
Muscala seems like a good pick up for the Celtics.
Agreed. There were some pretty shrewd small moves. That was one, for sure. Celts can play all kinds of 5 out: Tatum, Brown, Smart, Brogdon, White, Horford, Muscala, Grant Williams.
Wanted him for years.
Love just needs to be bubble wrapped until mid-March, then break him out and get him ready for the playoffs.
It’s interesting that John Collins wasn’t moved. Felt like his name was constantly floated.
How can we get some second round picks?
I’m on the phone with Koby rn I’m sending him 6
We have plenty.
2023: Swap with GSW
2024: ours to NY/Mem/Ind; GSW (31-55 prot)
2025: ours + Bucks’
2026: ours + Lakers’
2027: ours + Denver’s
2028: ours
2029: ours
Perkins: Cavs have 4 legit all stars
Perkins: they’re not one piece away. They just need growth.
Basically, that is the bet we made with the Mitchell deal.
Zach Lowe: keep an eye on Isaac Okoro (don’t know what that means now)
In this context, he may be projecting a leap.
IF one thinks Okoro is the 5th starter (big IF), then all the Cavs need is to bolster the bench.
Rubio is the best backup point in the league outside of Brogdon. And Neto is a nice #3. PG is set. Plus Mitchell (and Caris) can do some initiation.
I was thinking he meant in the off-season, and potentially moving him, if his value leaps. But he didn’t really explain it.
True. He only makes about $9 mil, so he won’t bring a huge rerurn. You’d need to package him with another player (LeVert) to land a bigger fish.

Josh Richardson to the Pels.
One way the comin in season tourney makes sense, is you’re basically getting two seasons and postseason and the trade deadline in the middle. You’re devaluing your product, but whatevs.
How many second round picks are there? Lots of teams hording them.
The Spurs and Pelicans are in agreement on a trade that will send veteran swingman Josh Richardson to New Orleans, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic
Sources tell Charania that San Antonio will receive guard Devonte’ Graham and four second-round picks in the deal.
Eric Gordon seems like he’s exhausted from constantly being traded, throughout his career.
All these deals save the KD ones are deck chairs.
100%

Wasn’t he just traded from Houston, where he never played.
Lmao
They have to be buying him out, otherwise he’s gonna set that arena on fire.
The Pistons will acquire James Wiseman from the Warriors in a three-team trade that will send Saddiq Bey to the Hawks, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Golden State will get five second-round picks from Atlanta in the deal, Wojnarowski adds
They whiffed that #2 pick, bigly. Think about Melo Ball on GSW.
