Preview and Live Thread: Cavs at Bulls (Game 4)
2015-05-10News is that Pau Gasol will not play today after injuring his left hamstring in Game 3.  They are calling it a “strain” which means he could be back in a game or two.  The Bulls finally went to their bench in game 3 and Nikola Mirotic showed how dangerous he can be.  He scored 12 points and grabbed eight boards in just 22 minutes.  He was a game high +19.  Obviously, losing Gasol hurts the Bulls, but the “small-ball” lineup of the Bulls is dangerous if only because it features a lot of streaky outside shooting in a series that has been mostly a half-court grindfest.  I’m not sure I agree with the sentiments in these tweets that the Bulls will be “better” but they will present a different look that the Cavs need to be prepared for.

Jacob Rosen saved me some time:
Regular season and playoffs:
Cavs w/ Gasol on court: +27 in 221 mins (+5.86 per 48)
Cavs w/ Gasol on bench: -12 in 120 mins (-4.80 per 48)— Jacob L. Rosen (@JacobLRosen) May 10, 2015
The Cavs once again stand at the precipice of a chasm. Â It’s hard to see them beating the Bulls in three straight games, making this game somewhat of a “must-win”. Â However, if they split on the road they will have regained home court advantage and will be sitting pretty.
The key to the rest of the series is Kyrie Irving’s health and LeBron James’ offensive execution in the half-court. Â Both of these were severely lacking in game 3 and cost the Cavs the game (the Cavs bench played very well). Â Kyrie’s game has a chaos factor that can get buckets when nothing else is working, much like he did at times in game 1. Â Without that, the Cavs offense is predictable and relies on a lot of high screen and rolls with LeBron. Â Jimmy Butler is showing an increased acumen in defending these screens. Â He’s anticipating them and rarely getting picked. Â The Cavs “answer” to this was to have LeBron go mano-y-mano in the post. Â Unfortunately, LeBron’s been losing the handle as he tries to muscle his way into the low post.
Keep an eye out for Timofey Mozgov’s minutes in this game.  The Cavs don’t seem to trust him out there. He’s fumbled away enough passes and had his shot blocked at the rim enough to understand why the Cavs are quick to pull the plug.  Still, he offers rim protection.  The Bulls swung the momentum in their favor in the 3rd quarter of game 3 with a series of breezy dribble-drives to the hoop.
Now Mozgov played the first half of this quarter so he was partly responsible for the carnage, but he will fare better in the long run at keeping the Bulls from turning the game into a layup line for Butler and Rose. Â Keyphrase: “long run”. Â Will Blatt stick with him after a few momentum changing turnovers? Â Or will he go with James Jones and TT.
According to @ESPNStatsInfo, the Cavs are a +25 this series in the 49 mins Thompson & Mozgov shared the court. Could exploit more w/ no Pau

These teams know each other and there is some chess to be played: will Blatt try to actually “go big” to exploit the loss of Gasol (and hope the Bulls play the severely struggling Joakim Noah) or will they call in an airstrike and run James Jones for heavy stretches at the 4?
Still, this series is being defined by the play of Rose, Butler, James, and Irving. Â Going into the series, you’d have given the edge to the Cavs. Â If Kyrie’s injuries hamper him as much as they did in game 3, it’s going to take a vintage LeBron performance to advance.
KYRIE IS PROVING/ GROWING INTO 1 ” TOUGH NUT ” —-GOTTA LOVE / APPRECIATE IT
Quickhit is up from Nate…
LeBron went 10-30 from the field with 8 turnovers (although he did have 8 asts), Kyrie shot 2-10 and Iman went 1-8 and we still won on the road. Gotta believe we can do better
He also had 14 boards…
As fans, we have to realize, can we do a better job of running an offense? Yes. But the Bulls have a lot to do with these poor shooting percentages as well with their length, athleticism, and physicality.
At the end of the day, just watch great players make great plays, it’s the playoffs. We’re blessed to be cheering for a team that’s in this situation.
absolutely. didnt mean to come off as negative. im on cloud 9, this has been some of the best and most dramatic sports action ive ever seen, and all the better that we came out on top. with two teams competing at such a high level, with such a toothgrinding battle of the wills, things are bound to get sloppy and down and dirty. I was actually trying to be positive by pointing out how in spite of those stats we still pulled out the win with guts, heart, and courage. now we gotta go take care of bidness at… Read more »
JR looking fly in the post-game interview…
most ridiculous series I’ve seen in along time as well as most frustrating especially last two games…no reason for this game to be close when cavs had 6 pt lead under 2 min to go….but that was great lebron last second sheet….back to back games with buzzer beaters? has that happened before in series?
I like Blatt, but I’m actually not sure he would have survived losing this game on a technical if the refs had seen him trying to call a timeout with none left…
man, I shudder to think. You think he would have been rage-fired on spot by Gilbert?
it’s actually crazy man……

wow. unbelievable series of inches and twists of fate
Oh my goodness. Wonder if the league will weigh in with one of its after-the-fact judgments and say, yes, the officials should have T’d up Blatt.
And I can’t help adding: This is one case where it’s good the players ignored him!
Blatt is so much tougher than he gets credit for, EG. He would have owned it and moved on.
Oh, I know he’s tough… I’m just not sure Danny G woulda forgiven him…
If we can somehow win in 6 and Hawks/Wiz goes 7, Kyrie would rest from Thurs to Wed. Seems unlikely, but that is really our best chance to get back to a good offensive level.
We can do it, we can do it!!!!
Then it shall be! Cavs in six, Bulls are crushed
I hate the Blatt bashing but in all seriousness how is it that with 20 secs left up 2 it takes 3 attempts to inbound the ball and it just goes to LeBron who gets mugged.
I would have chucked it back to Delly and had him pass from there / get fouled and at least split the FTs
So glad we won this game.
On to game 5
I think it was partly JFJ being cautious because he knew he could call timeout. But JR and LeBron both getting the ball where they could easily be trapped was not great.
Been out all day with my girls. Catching the score when I can and sending rays of silent support. Can’t wait for a quiet time and I’ll have to relive the glorious finish late tonight.
I figured at the beginning of the year this would be an epic series. Little did I know that both teams would be staggering into it.
Sweet, sweet victory for The Land.
Priorities. Respect!
Avery Johnson just tweeted: “Biggest ASSIST in the @NBA playoffs come from Cavs ASSISTant coach Ty Lue!!”
Anybody know what thats about? Did he draw up that last play?
I’m assuming he’s referring to Lue catching Blatt trying to call time out with no time outs left.
Would have cost them the game.
Shades of Chris Webber…
I was going to type it but my six year old wanted to measure his leaps off the couch like some young Carl Lewis stuff
Did he get some good distance?
Blatt tried calling timeout when they had none left. Ty Lue reminded him that they had none left. Could have been a technical foul on Blatt if you call a timeout with none left, would have lost the game.
Oh wow, yeah Blatt even said he almost blew it. I forgot that would have been a tech!
Can you believe this series? Shame everyone is injured
As long as the Cavs are the last ones standing… I’ll take it
Adds to the drama
THAT IS FUNNY ARCH ( NOT TOO FAR FROM THE TRUTH )—–IF WE EVER START TO HIT OUR 3 PT SHOTS WE WILL BREAK A GAME / THIS SERIES WIDE OPEN
we would win by 25 if we would shoot even NORMAL percentages. Our defense is LOCKED IN right now. holy cow.
JR, Mozgov and Lebron saved us, only ones to score in the 4th (11 points JR, 6 points Moz, 8 points Lebron). This win is the sweetest so far for the playoffs. We need to come out for blood on Tuesday
LeBron James now has same number of career game-winning buzzer-beaters in the playoffs as Michael Jordan does (3). pic.twitter.com/gxH6fn3ipA

DITTO’S GLORIA FROM NOMAD —-THANK YOU FOR YOUR SON !!
@FearTheSword: Game 7 of this series will be Kirk and Delly playing 1 on 1 while the other 28 players are injured.
Lolol!!!!
That’s awesome!
hahaha so true. What is up with this stupid series? After the shock wore off and they showed the replay twenty times, I all of a sudden saw Thompson grab lebron after he hit the shot and i thought “holy crap that could have been tragic”
GOD i thought the same thing they mobbed him
Haha that was my thought too. “Don’t jump on him you idiots you could kill him”.
I know we have no chance of winning overall with a Kyrie who might be lame come June and everyone else being bashed around but I so want to beat this crappy Bulls team.
yeah i would rather get shellacked in the nab finals than let another east team represent right now. i dislike the other three sooo very much
God I need someone to celebrate with! Bet I’m the only Clevelander in a 2,000 mile radius
Feel you I’m in oregon and everyone hates Ohio! Cheers to you with my IPA
I’m in Buenos Aires, people don’t even care about basketball here haha. Cheers man
Cheers to you Bimmy!
Haha thanks! I wore my LeBron jersey all day today, got some curious looks. If it ain’t Manu or Scola, they don’t care
Cheers bimmy. If I was near you I would like to go skiing in the Patagonia if possible. (It is mid autumn there right? )
It is! Ski season comin up! Now I just have to get my skis mailed down from Cleveland…..
My Mom is a ski patroller at BM/BW. Always got good deals at the ski swap!
Happy Mother’s Day, Gloria!
Is there anything as riveting as playoff basketball?!?
@DwyaneWade: Bang!!!
Classy stuff from DWade
LBJ hit the game winner, but the Cavs don’t win this game without JR and Moz…
Love JR. can’t believe it. Every shot he’s taken I’ve been ok with, make or miss. He puts it up with no fear, and hasn’t gotten stupid with it.
no question. actually LeBron had another bad shooting/turnover night
Man I took my wife to her favorite restaurant with my boys. Only saw last 2minutes as a computer store. Was epic. Missed you guys though. Didn’t want to be posting while on dinner date
In front of the Bulls bench to boot. I still can’t calm down.
I need a special Stephen A. Smith mute/sensor.
He’s predicting Cleveland to win though…
That was extra sweet in so many levels. I will try and catch my breath a list some of them or maybe soemebody with better writing skills can. Wow I love it. Bulls must be crushed more so than we were Friday. Let’s ride this to the ECF
CAN THIS SERIES GET ANY BETTER —-INSTANT CLASIC —-TV HAS GOT TO BE EATING UP !!
Emergency podcast required. Surely!!!
I’m literally shaking as I type this. Mesmerizing stuff.
That was so satisfying on the Bulls’ home floor.
LeBron looked like he was going to cry in the post-game interview. Unreal. Wake-up call.
I AM BREAKING OUT THE FINE WINE FELLAS –HERE IS A TOAST TO ALL MY CTB BROTHERS—–HELLL YES !!!—LIFE IS GOOD —LIVING THE DREAM —-EVIL I WISH YOU WERE WITH ME WE MIGHT NOT BE SOBER UNTIL TUES’S PLAYOFF GAME !!!
