Podcap: Cavs 140, Wolves 138 in OT (or, How You Remind Me)
2018-02-08https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/episode-159-or-how-you-remind-me
After reaching the lowest depths of doubt, denial and depression Tuesday in Orlando, the Cavs returned home and played possibly the game of the season in reminding us how good they can be when they try. There were contributions up and down the lineup in this unbelievable overtime shootout thriller with the Timberwolves, that saw both teams combine for an NBA record 40 (!!!) three pointers. LeBron James also reminded us of just how great he is… notching yet another triple double with 37 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds… the last few of which vaulted him past Zydrunas Ilgauskas and made him the all time franchise leader in all three categories. Yet, he saved his best for last… draining a turnaround jumper over Jimmy Butler as the final buzzer sounded. It was arguably his greatest game winning shot in a regular season game during the LeBron 2.0 era.

It was great to see LeBron smile again. It was also great to see the Cavs free Cedi Osman from the bench, as he came up with some terrific and much needed hustle and defensive ability. But, did it change the narrative going forward? Will it be a turning point in the season when we look back? Does it alter what the Cavs do in the next 12 hours or so with the trade deadline looming? To try and answer some of these questions, as well as thoroughly break down this dramatic and genuinely enjoyable victory, Nate, Tom and EG piled into the booth to chop it up.
And, if you’re wondering about the subtitle of this podcap… well, you’ll hear the inspiration for it pretty quickly as you tune in. As always, you can listen above, on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play.
Enjoy, and GO CAVS!

I can hardly wait to see him on the floor…really think Lebron will love him…

I’m glad they made all this trades. Now all I hope is that they start defending and playing the right way. Oh and coach Lue please play Cedi more.

?????
I will gladly take Brook Lopez and Ilyasova in the buyout market.
Me too but apparently the lakers aren’t not going to buy out Lopez.
Shelburne said she’s hearing Lopez wants to finish the year in LA. So that sucks.
Exactly.
Oops, I meant Robin Lopez.
Zach Lowe has a good column up…one interesting thing he says is that people can quibble about taking on Clarkson’s contract, and that’s fair, but that the Lakers were not giving up Nance without a first back. He also says Avery Bradley was not moving without a first. Worth a read.
I think Nance and Lebron could be dynamite together. They could play Nance at center and Love at 4 when he’s back, and that could be really interesting.
That offense will be electric with hill too
For the first time all season I’m excited to be a Cavs fan.
I have been depressed about this team since we traded for IT (remember when we were disappointed that he got hurt during the Celtics series and we actually had to play 5-on-5 on offense?)
And this is coming from someone who loved watching Baron Davis and SKY-enga.
Only downside is that we still didn’t get Delly back…
We just have to wait for next year to see the inevitably unstoppable PnR between Cedi and Delly…
Yes THIS!
Why are we giving Koby Altman credit and not Dan Gilbert? Also discredit all those stories about CavsDan’s attachment to IT – today was a clear commitment to LeBron
Vintage if you read through the entire thread, Gilbert has gotten a ton of props and he deserves it.
Fair enough – have just been refreshing sporadically throughout the day but haven’t read the entire thread.
Oh yes on here
I gave credit to both. Cavsdan spending big bucks and those two managed to turn a big steaming pile of hot garbage into copper. I am not willing to say gold or silver yet, but hey copper is expensive as hell now. Also credit Tom who has I told you so rights for at least the end of this season.
It’s a sports media politics thing on Dan Gilbert. It’s very popular to hate on successful owners and they will never forgive him the Lebron letter years ago. It’s doesn’t matter what good he does, they feel justified to throw insults forever. Never mind they are not Cavs fans and just plain jealous.
So I suppose the ultimate question is: Is Hill, Hood, James, Love, Nance give us a better chance than Wade, PG, James, Love Thompson would have, if that was the trade that really could have happened, against the Warriors?
I would definitely prefer PG, but it’s not as much of a catastrophe as it was.
If the Bledsoe/ PG trade was a thing, I’d take that. PG and Lebron on the floor together would be incredible…
https://twitter.com/tonestradamus/status/961688850597806080
If the Cavs wanted to… they are now capable of putting five 6’8 or taller guys on the floor at the same time who can not only shoot but switch and defend, provided LBJ as a de facto PG…
LBJ 6’8
Hood 6’8
Cedi 6’8
Nance 6’9
Green 6’9
Plus Love at 6’10 when he returns…
Well, four of those guys can shoot. Green is a little shaky on threes and Nance can hit some 16-18 footers. However, that is a crazy long, crazy mobile lineup for defense, minus love.
Plus you can swap in a 6’7 Korver for offense or a 6’9 TT for defense (allegedly)
And true
They can all fast break like crazy too…
True
Wow!! Masterful job by the front office.. Didn’t think Koby had this in him. Today he became the Cavs GM. . we’re going back to the finals for sure..
I wish Joe Tait was still announcing games… what I wouldn’t give to hear “BLOCKED BY NANCE!!” again…
The phrase wasn’t just for Nance, but it would also be great to hear, “What with the right hand….” too.
It just happened a lot, since Nance Sr. averaged an insane 3.0 blocks per game in the 91-92 season, and over 2.5 a game for his Cavs career…
Sorry EG, I wrote the above sentence poorly. I meant to say, it would also be great to hear, “Wham with the right hand….” for Nancy Jr even though that phrase wasn’t just used by Tate for his dad.
For sure… he used to love saying that for Hot Rod and Big Brad also…
This really did turn into The Godfather Part II.
Fredo is dead and Michael Corleone had his bloodbath…
LOL… great observation!
Thanks!
And now Lebron should just answer every reporter’s question regarding this offseason with, “Don’t ask me about my business.”
Just wait until All Star Weekend in Los Angeles… especially if he’s ever in the vicinity of Paul George… LOL
This is an amazing photo lol
Perfect !!!! And I am sure LeBron would have wanted IT to be Mo Greene………….shot in the eye while getting a massage.
Spoiler alert, yo
I’m sorry. What I meant to say is that Michael Corleone rides off into the sunset with Keyser Soze and Harry Lime on Rosebud.
But then they discover the 2007 ECF trophy buried in the sand next to the Statue of Liberty and realize they have to share minutes with Sasha Pavlovich, Damon Jones, and Luke Skywalker’s (goth-dressing) dad.

makes sense not to sign Perkins –wait until after the all star break / buy outs to see who might be available for those 2 spots—-hell bring PERK back as a coach —-work with ‘ZZ” daily
Remember when…

That’s like a sports-media time capsule, with no hot takes, no analysis, no salary-cap discussion, no trade grades…

That’s incredible that there are only four guys left from the team that won it all just a year and a half ago… What’s crazier is that four of the six guys traded away today also were not even on that team…

Why do I know this scene? What movie is that from?
Anchorman… when Jack Black kicks Ron Burgundy’s dog off the bridge…
Ah yes. Right Burgandy throws out a shake in Black’s face. God that movie was so hilarious.

Other than addition by subtraction of losing Rose and IT, Rodney perhaps best addition to team.

As a fan of the Cavs from the 80’s I’ve been dreaming of a way to get Nance Jr. to the Cavs…I loved watching his dad play back in the day with Price and Daugherty and the Hot Rod….Super psyched that he’s a part of the Cavs now…
My dad says the youngest Nance brother who like his bro also plays at my high school Alma mater may have more potential than Larry Junior.
Kid’s name is Pete Nance. Apparently a four star prospect, number 64 prospect in the country. Currently a junior but has committed to play for Northwestern. Also had offers from West Virginia, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, and Virginia.
Senior that is.
Maybe he’ll be a Cav someday too…
That would be crazy. I would guess the first time in sports that would have ever happened?
SO IF YOU HAVE CHOICES NOEL / LOPEZ/ PAPAGIANNIS—WHO DO YOU PURSUE
I’d have to say Lopez…Just the most skilled and experienced player of the three…
Plus actual size guys have to match up with.
Lopez. He needs to be guarded, which would be refreshing. Papa is G league fodder who might be a decent player down the line. He’s not close right now.
Lol!

Who is that impostor with the smile?
So Perkins deleted this. Haha.
Just rolled out of bed in Australia – did I …. miss…any….
YES YOU DID. THE CAVS CALLED UP KENDRICK PERKINS FROM THE G LEAGUE. YOU CAN GO BACK TO BED NOW
Oh I love Perk! anyway, I got up too early. Laters.
Wooowwww.

CAVS GETTING “TORCHED ” BY ESPN’S —-ROUND THE HORN FOR TODAYS TRADES —WTF ???
Yeah they’re all haters!
Boston fans so bitter right now
What reasons? Has any national media actually watched Crowder, Rose, IT, shumpert this year? So so so bad. It is inconceivable to me that anyone that has watched those guys could knock the return.
If they had done nothing but cut IT today, and nothing else, it would have been a good day…
https://twitter.com/BleacherReport/status/961720329478356993
Remember when picking up JR and Shump upgraded the roster (seriously) because they made the rotation instantly more athletic? (Mozgov helped too, but wings rule.) The Cavs went from mediocre to the best team in the league over the second half of the season.
This could be like that but even better.
SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT GILBERT ( AND WE HERE AT CTB ARE SOMEWHAT DIVIDED ) BUT I THINK HIS DESIRE TO WIN IS AS MUCH AS LEBRON’S AND ISN’T AFRAID TO SPEND THE MONEY TO DO SO
what a season so far…
SHOULD WE PURSUE ANOTHER BIG AT BUYOUT—NOEL / WHO ELSE IS OUT THERE —-BUYOUT WILL BE THE NEXT ‘NBA HYPE ” PERIOD
Brook Lopez probably.
IT and daddy Ball out in LA is going to be great
Cavs roster by “position”
Pure point = Calderon
Combo Guard = Hill, Clarkson
Wings: JR, Korver, Hood, Cedi
Combo forwards: James, Green
4/5s: Love, Nance
5s: TT, Zizic
Could use a real C and another F/C type who can shoot.
Suddenly we have 7 guys who are rotation level or above, 6’5″ to 6’9″, and pretty athletic: James, JR, Green, Nance, Hood, Osman, Clarkson. Throw on Hill at a long 6’3″, Korver’s size and intelligent D at 6’7-8″, and all kinds of stuff opens up.
This is what makes me so excited. We went from an unflexible roster last year to now what is a roster filled with “switchy” players on defense.

THANK YOU EVIL ( FOR THE PIC ) !!!!!!
SO NOW TY’S FAVOROTE LINE “WE HAVE TO PLAY WITH PACE “‘ MIGHT ACTUALLY HAVE SOME VALIDITY TO IT
THINK “ZZ” MAY GET SOME MINUTES NOW ??—–WHY NOT —HE CAN RUN THE FLOOR FOR A BIG MAN / GOT VERY GOOD PASSING SKILLS / ENRGETIC–HIGH MOTOR —-MIGHT BE A PLEASANT SURPRISE LIKE CEDI
No. He’s 20 and under-developed.
He should. Actually he should had already been a solid piece off the bench. Unfortunately Lue doesn’t see it the same.
I disagree. He doesn’t look ready.
SO YEAH THE WAY LEBRON PLAYED LAST NIGHT –AS RUMORED HE WAS CONSULTED BEFORE THE GAME THAT TRADES WILL BE MADE ( AND PROBABLY THIS WOULD BE HIS “LAST ” GAME WITH I.T. ——CAN’T WAIT TO SEE LEBRON / GREEN / LARRY NANCE JR ON THE CT TOGETHER –TALK ABOUT ELITE ATHLETICISM —–HEY EVIL I HAVE A FAVOR CAN YOU BRING UP THAT VICIOUS/ RECENT DUNK OF “JR’S ” OVER DURANT —THANKS MY MAN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4JbpdJjWk8
Oh MY!!!
Lue’s head probably exploded trying to figure out what to do with all these players. This should be fun to watch.
He is the worst possible coach for this type of roster upheaval, unfortunately.
If you told me yesterday that we could get rid of Thomas, Shumpert, Rose and Crowder’s contracts but it would cost us Frye and a first round pick in return … I would of strongly considered it. The fact that we got Nance Jr, Clarkston, Hood and Hill in return is amazing!
Ha that is so true.
Luke Walton must be ecstatic to have IT’s lockerroom presence going forward…
10:1 he bails and gets surgery
Didn’t we just talk about who could be the Boris Diaw on the Cavs?
https://twitter.com/RealGM/status/961709940476956672
There’s nobody left on the team that I will cringe when they enter the game… LOL
Not that I trust this year’s RPM numbers yet, but if you want to contrast them to last season: Hood has been much worse this season. Hill has been much worse this season. Clarkson has been worse this season. Larry Nance Jr. has been much better. Also, Larry Nance Jr. is now our third best player according to RPM. Hood’s usage went from ~20 to 27 this season and I’m guessing that’s part of why he’s been a bit disappointing. I’m really hoping Hill is our Boris Diaw. Larry Nance Jrs.’ DRPM was above 2 last year and is above… Read more »
I saw that DRPM for Nance. I didn’t realize. Think that makes KLove a more viable 5? Or has that ship sailed?
Nance is the 5. He is soooooo underrated
Of course:
Hill: Jazz were #4 in West last year, Kings suck.
Hood: Jazz were much better last year
Lakers are about the same.
I am not worried. Compared to the guys we shipped out, they are not worst. You yourself just had a whole pod cast about weaknesses regarding RPM. RPM despite what JE seems to indicate also appears to be highly affected by the overall strength of a team. Obviously the opposite is true as well, but I don’t buy his work is able to separate team strength from effectiveness all that well, considering you only get samples from lineups guys have played on for the current season. It is not like guys are playing with different guys or teams for most… Read more »
RPM is limited. I trust a seasons’ worth much more than half a seasons worth.
I just haven’t seen these guys play much in the last year so that’s why I Brought it up
To your point – it can’t get worse than what they were getting from IT and Crowder
https://twitter.com/stevemoxey/status/961697667385643008
Mark Price has two hoops-playing sons — one a 6-7 guard who has played at TCU and Charlotte, the other a skinny commit to Liberty who will be a freshman this coming year.
Do Daugherty and Hot Rod have any sons we should keep an eye on?
https://twitter.com/MZavagno11/status/961706305726615553
https://twitter.com/Herring_NBA/status/961706952169541632
That squad took the first Boston Big 3 to 7 games
outscored them for the series.
So, so pleased with today’s moves. I can actually watch the games again! Seriously, I have been so bummed about the current team I just could not bring myself to tune in. Win or lose, they have done what they needed to do and given us some younger, exciting players to work with LeBron.
Could be tough with less than a half season and KLove out to put it together, but there is HOPE!
