Playoff Live Thread: Cavs vs. Pacers, Game 2 (#Whatever…)
2018-04-18
Well, Game 1 is in the rear view… and the hope is for Game 2 that the Cavaliers aren’t too complacent to read past the first word of this year’s team playoff slogan. It certainly seemed like it in their sleepy, sloppy dud of an opener to the post-season. Actually, I have no room to talk, since I missed the game entirely due to some work and family commitments… but the high low lights were painful enough to glance through. If you want a salient and informative breakdown of some of the finer points, make sure you check out David’s Woodshop article if you haven’t yet.
LeBron has been on the record many times about how playoff seeding isn’t important to him, and now the Cavs find themselves essentially in the five seed after losing home court advantage in the series to the Pacers. Whatever you feel like blaming the loss on… be it LeBron’s early passivity, his newer teammates inexperience or inability to gel under the bright lights of the playoffs, Kevin Love either not getting enough shots or not demanding the ball in the post more, poor defensive rotations, awful coaching, general make or miss league variance or even Victor Oladipo’s revenge for Dan Gilbert taking veiled shots at him over the summer… it’s one game, and it’s over. That said, there’s probably never been a second game of the first round more important to win than tonight’s game.
Ty Lue has been teasing changes to his starting lineup since about five minutes after he walked off the court on Sunday… but still no definitive word yet (and now it’s official).

We do know that George Hill is a bit banged up after that hard screen, and that Rodney Hood was excused from practice earlier in the day… here’s why…
Looks like Rodney Hood welcomed twins into the world this morning. https://t.co/VgX2Y3oPsq

All that really matters though is that LeBron comes out aggressively, Kevin Love demands the ball in the post, the Cavaliers’ sharpshooters actually make some shots, and the Cavs play with more intensity and physicality on defense… y’know, like a team that actually does whatever it takes to win… rather than just whatever.
My predictions haven’t been great lately, so I’m just going to say the Cavs should and will win this game, although it won’t be easy, and it will take a better triple double from LeBron than Sunday’s triple double.
Catch all the action starting at 7pm EST on TNT… and as always, chime in here with your thoughts along the way.
GO CAVS!

Don’t get the Clarkson hate. Feel like he’s been decent this game.
He’s been better the last few minutes…
Same. I can accept the occasional mistake as a trade off for someone who can create something
Also you’re holding them to even with Bron on bench. That’s a win.
If Clarkson’s screwing up… it’s on Lue.
I am with you.
Weber is an idiot.
Better than he was. I just don’t ever want him shooting those pull-up midrangers early in the shot clock while Love as in. He also is just so shaky as a passer when he does pass. He hasn’t been awful.
clarkson finally passed!
KLOVE BAILING THE BENCH OUT!!!
Why not play Hill or Calderon???
Probably saving hill for the last five. Though he will likely be really cold by that point.
Yup. May as well roll the dice.

God Clarkson is such a bad passer. Lucky nance and green save the possession.
?
Didn’t it get deflected?
Didn’t see that. Either way so very very very close to a turnover which Nance basically saved and then green finished well off the pass.
Nice stretch by Clarkson here.
Clarkson, Hood, Green, Love, Nance.
BIG THREE by Kev!
Huge three for Love!
Big shot, kev!
Wow, that swing of events.
This feels so much like game 2 against Orlando
Nice finish, jeff
What a joke! Should have been Cavs ball, and there was no discernable foul on the Bog shot…
NBA refs are the worst in sports.
They must have Indy +8 tonight.
Clarkson and Green should not see another minute on a basketball Court in 2018.
Where was the foul?
Cheapo foul on Green…
Love is real gimpy now. This team is so fragile except for LBJ (knock on wood).
Clarkson finally all the way to the basket!!!
There you go, JC!
why is jeff freaking green in the game?!?!?!!?
Way to be aggressive JC!
I’d be totally fine with Cedi getting 95% of Clarkson’s minutes, honestly…and he just scored…
Give Hood’s minutes to Cedi
Booker out there just mugging people…
Green letting Sabonis own him.
Booker is hilarious
Cavs have no idea what they are doing on offense. Not sure this team runs anything in practices.
Moment too big for Hood maybe…
Rodney, you need to hit those shots…argh
Rodney Hood is a disaster this game.
Played extremely well 1st half. 3rd quarter offense was awful.
Need love to finish those hooks
Jesus Jeff Green you can’t guard bigs.
Maybe that’ll get KLOVE going.
There you go Kevin! (I feel like Hubie Brown)
Kev!
I’m betting Bron was the one that changed the lineup and kicked Jeff out.
Let’s hope Bron puts Cedi in, then. Honestly, I’m fine with LBJ coaching the team the rest of the way.
Hood, Green and Clarkson are just not giving the team anything. Why no Cedi or Ante???
Whelp. Indy has played better and the cavs have no answer (read set plays that are have enough complexity to get a defense moving) besides give Lebron the ball and stand around while he does everything. Going to be tough going forward in this game and the series playing that way.
Setting aside the Gilbert thing for a moment, if the Cavs can’t beat this Indiana team with LBJ playing the way he is, I see no reason for him to want to stay. Everyone on this team is locked up for the next two years. We have one draft pick. If this team can’t beat Oladipo and some mediocre role players…
Cedi cannot possibly play any worse than Green
Watching Clarkson run the point and Green shoot 3s is such ugly basketball. Lue has cooled off since the great start.
to be fair…his great start was lebron scoring 16 straight.
Yep. Though the lineup change partially facilitated that scoring by hugely opening the lane.
Rodney Hood with two awful turnovers that somehow didn’t end up turning into pacer points.
oh holy hot garbage…why not cedi for lebron?@@
Well, I was probably the last holdout on Clarkson… he’s really been terrible so far in the first two games…
just not ready to handle this intensity yet.
Yeah total inexperience in full display
It’s on Lue… he needs to put him in positions to succeed…. such as off-ball guard.
If only Jeff Green could hit open 3s…
Playoff Jeff Green, folks!!
If that Stevenson buzzer shot would have gone, I would have been pissed… mostly since he took like 5 steps beforehand…
WTF are those Hood turnovers?
Argh. Jeff.
Don’t care if Clarkson is a chucker – need someone to force the issue on offense here
clarkson just boxed out Turner like he’s been boxing out his whole life. more of that type of fundamental work please.
God hood has horrible handles.
Hood excelling off his foot
Nance rebounding well
Hood’s lost the ball on the dribble a few times this game…
Hood cannot have that loose handle…
57.8 seconds of rest for LeBron…
Jeff Green is Jeff Green
Great board by Nance!
Great rebound, nance
Awful turnover by Green there…
Dammit Green
Can’t ride LeBron for 45 min per game and then expect him to be able to go 100% on D the entire time while carrying the entire offense
Yeah this is way way unsustainable and not going to win us this series.
Jesus, jeff
LBJ is literally the only thing working for the Cavs right now.
Lol. I love how Jose can. Push Turner off the block
Four on Jose now after that touch call… sheesh
LBJ is having to do everything on offense. Little help coach Lue.
