Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors, Game 1 (#TryTryAgain)
2018-05-01The Toronto Raptors did not succeed against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 playoffs, losing in six games… so they tried again in the 2017 playoffs… and got swept. 2018 brings another year, and another opportunity to try, try again. Only, this matchup should be different because neither of these teams is really the same as they once were.
The team from the North may still have many recognizable names from their past two iterations, led by an All-Star back court tandem of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, and featuring big men Jonas Valanciunas and Serge Ibaka in their starting five. However, the difference isn’t only in their overhauled bench unit, but also in their overall philosophy of play as a team under head coach Dwayne Casey. The Raps have mostly transformed themselves away from an ISO heavy reliance on their star guards, and have embraced a balanced inside-out attack. They have real gunners on the perimeter, including CJ Miles, Fred VanVleet and Delon Wright, in addition to the already dangerous Lowry. Even DeRozan spent last summer focusing on his three ball with a decent degree of success. Add some length and energy in the form of Pascal Siakam and Jacob Poeltl, and there’s a demonstrable reason why Toronto finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Which leads to another thing that’s different… this being the first time the Raptors have home court advantage over the Cavaliers. That’s because the wine & gold limp across the border, battered and bruised from a roller-coaster season that landed them in the four seed, and led to a harrowingly physical series against the upstart Indiana Pacers. Injuries, roster upheaval and role uncertainty have all plagued the Cavs, requiring LeBron James to put forth a near superhuman effort to carry the team much sooner in these playoffs than anyone expected. Without some timely help here and there from the few veterans populating the Cleveland roster, the Raptors could have very well not even had the opportunity to try and redeem themselves against their biggest stumbling block to the NBA Finals.
So, all should be set up well for Toronto, right? They’ve got LeBron and the Cavs right where they want them, no? And, they’ll have all the fans in The Six screaming for possibly four home games, eh?
Yeah, not so fast. There’s a reason Canadians don’t typically have a high degree of confidence in these Raptors. Because when the pressure is on, they aren’t always the most mentally tough team. Sure, they finally exorcised the demons of playoff Game 1s in the first round against the Wizards (they had lost 10 straight Game 1s before that), but they also still seem to be at their shakiest when playing Cleveland. Even with this new, reconstituted squad, they went just 1-2 against the Cavs in the regular season… with the only win coming during that dark period when Isaiah Thomas started for Cleveland. They lost one of the signature games of the season (for the Cavs anyway) 132-129, when LeBron, missing five teammates and his head coach, scored 35 points with 17 assists and zero turnovers to overcome a 79 point half by the Raptors. During the second half of that game, Toronto reverted back to their old ISO ways as the Cavs applied pressure, and there’s no question Cleveland will look to do that once again.
No word yet on which starting five Ty Lue will incorporate in Game 1… although it does sound like George Hill’s back will allow him to suit up and be available…
Ty Lue wouldn't reveal his starting lineup for Game 1. Tristan Thompson was a hero in Game 7, but Jeff Green was very effective against the Raps in the Cavs' two regular season wins against them when they went small. Lue also said George Hill's back is "good" to go.

One thing for sure, however, if the Cavs hope to maintain their dominance over the Raptors, they will once again need some heroics from LeBron James, as well as solid contributions from their veterans. It would be a bonus to see one of their young guys (Hood, Clarkson, Nance Jr.) have a good series, but if the Cavs can defend the way they did against the Pacers (for most of the first round), they should have at least a decent chance to get back to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Sticking with my non-predictions for the playoffs, but I do think there’s a good possibility the Cavs can steal Game 1, especially if they can put the requisite pressure on the Raps.
Catch all the action on TNT starting at 8pm EST… and, as always, chime in below…
GO CAVS!
Choke shot from Lowry…
Good catch Chones!
That’s where Lue gets upset?!! What a dumbass. How about getting upset after Lebron gets hammered in the Indy series
Almost an amazing steal!
Don’t kill yourself Bron!!
DeRozan took one for the tea lol
Raptors tried to give it away. Cavs trying to give it right back.
Most animated I’ve seen Lue this year…
We need a GIF of that
Great elbow. That sets the tone for the whole series.
Oh wow… caught DeRozan with the elbow…
Damn! That was a brutal hit the face. Love finally contributing
Love you friggin idiot
?
Garbage call!!
Awful turnaround there… 7 point swing…
I think Lowry would love to play with LeBron…
Sigh. Cavs mess around and probably going to go down by 4. Dumb and so casual on offense tonight. Overconfident against raptors. Can’t blames them as raptors are trying to lose. But probably letting this one slip away. Just dumb.
Missed a golden opportunity here.
Seeming to be headed that way. Raptors basically tried to give the game away. They are playing awful down the stretch.
Or are Cavs just playing some good D?
Meh. Raptors missed a ton of bunnies and wide wide open threes. Out of bounds stuff is them just not executing
Uuugh… Bad luck on that foul.
Reminds me of KK’s big miss vs the Dubs in game three. Had to hit that
Needed that Korver three… especially if Ibaka hits these three…
Argh. That’s a good call. Korver missed a huge shot. If course he’s been in forever.
Need to score guys. Now or never.
such a late call!
Kyle Lowry just throws his body at people to get a foul and refs not smart enough to figure out
Man… didn’t see LBJ’s foot get in there…
LBJ had the whole right baseline cleared out on that OG ISO. Unsure why he would call for the tt screen.
LeBron may lose this game for us. The king giveth. He king taketh
+1
LeBron needs to attack quickly.
ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME???
This is vintage TT… Korver you gotta hit that!
Feel like the cavs could have had this in their pocket a long time ago if they weren’t settling for idiot shots on offense so much for the second half.
LOL I forgot how much I enjoy Dwayne Casey and Mike Budenholzer flip out
FIVE SECONDS!!!!
It feels that if the Cavs can find a way to get the lead the Raptors will choke the rest of the way. They are already chokin tbh.
James 1-7 from three tonight. He’s bailing them out
Raps only have one timeout left…
Didn’t love that shot from Bron…he was open, but he aint exactly lighting it up from deep tonight…need this stop
James just had to drive instead of jacking up a three there. Or let someone else take it
I’m all for making Toronto nervous… but it would be a shame to let this one slip away at this point…
James really really wants to shoot js tonight.
LeBron needs to stop going for the dagger threes. Drive!!
Exactly.
Lowry PANIC!!!!
Why why why LeBron
Bron way too in love with the jump shot tonight…
Why LeBron ?
TT is SO much better on JV than anyone else…
I still can’t believe Tristan changed his freaking shooting hand while in the NBA. Glad he’s knocking down the FTs
I am amazed the cavs are in this. Raptors have kind of beat themselves a lot this game. Kind of their MO I guess. Cavs really have settled a ton on offense tonight.
would be nice to steal one here
Let’s hope that pressure bursts the pipes now !
It’s winning time…cmon Lebron…
If raptors lose this, they may roll over show their bellies
Canada turning on their own… chanting “Khlo-e!” at TT… Still makes his throws…
When did TT become Mark Price
Don’t understand the reference?
Money at the line
Ah… well he is from Canada!
LBJ really wants to shoot js against OG.
This crowd is tortured
Thompson!
OG fouled TT on the pick AND James on the shot
Wow… so many chances for JV that time…
Derozan hit him on the head
Jeez Kev…
He got fouled.
Just can’t hold the ball though… they know he’s got a bad thumb…
Clean block. You aren’t going to get a push on a jump hook. Post play has to be tougher.
They probably didn’t get that ball inbounds in time, but hey, it’s Toronto…
Toronto traditionally has not gotten a lot of calls go their way against us….
Just caught up. Were some bonehead Clarkson and hood plays and a few missed LeBron FTs from being in this. Throw in Kevin bunnies and we should be up
They’ve had some bunnies they’ve missed as well
That was a long 5 seconds and a long 2.2. Only three point game though.
If we did not do the love at center fiasco, we would be winning this game
Down three and with the FT bonus on the Cavs favor. LeBron should try to force a switch that makes him go at JV and draw some fouls.
Getting JV out of this game would be huge
Oh nvm, thought he had 5
Bron a board away from a triple double… kind of a terrible shooting night for him from perimeter and line though…
That was pretty awful. Give up an easy 2 with 2.2 on the clock. Cavs need a good look here. Wouldn’t mind Hill back in the game.
Lol @ Korver. Stood there with his hands up and watched him go right by
Yup, he didn’t even try to contest.
Slow burn euro step drive by demar. Where a rim protector would have swatted that to oblivion.
