Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Celtics, Game 5 (#BestofThree)
2018-05-23I was tempted to make George Hill the poster child of this Live Thread… mainly because his number is “3” and because when he plays well, he brings out the best in the Cavs. However, since Mike covered G Hill’s effect on the Cavs in depth last week, I settled on a shot of the other crucially important matchup in this deadlocked Conference Finals. Kyle Korver is 16 years older than Jaylen Brown, but he’s been able to match the young Celtic’s energy and hustle over the last two games. Even though Brown wound up leading Boston in scoring (25 points) in Game 4, it took him an inefficient 23 shots to get there. Three of those were blocked by the craftily defensive Korver, who I always forget has good size at 6-7 (kind of like how Ty Lue forgets how old Kyle is).
Now that both teams have held serve at home, the series has effectively been shrunk to a “best of three” scenario… which you no doubt learned on Monday night when it was literally the most used quote by the President Genius Celtics hive mind in the post game pressers. Boston would presumably hold the advantage given that two of the three will be played in the always loud and annoying TD Garden… a place where they boast a 9-0 record in these playoffs. However, it’s never all that wise to bet against LeBron James winning at least one road game in a playoff series… in fact, outside of last year’s Finals, James has won a road playoff game in the other 32 previous series. He is unfortunately 0-3 on the road in Game 5s against the Celtics in his playoff career though, so he’ll look to change that tonight.
For the Cavs to put the first post season blemish on Boston’s home court record, their role players will have to exert even more of the hustle and intensity they put on display during the last two games in Cleveland. It will take more stifling defense, more teeth-rattling screens and more Kyle Korver blocks and floor burns. It will also probably take more threes from all of the Cavs’ gunners. They went just 8-23 from deep in Game 4, but still won by nine. A few more of those go in, and the game is likely not in doubt past the end of the third quarter. Korver went 2-5 from downtown and Brown wound up 2-6. Something tells me whoever can win that particular battle will make the difference tonight.
The rumblings are that President Stevens might switch things up in his starting contingency, and that he might go more defensive early with either Aaron Baynes or Marcus Smart (or both) to begin. Hard to say for sure, since Brad is keeping things close to the vest…
Brad Stevens says he doesn’t reveal lineups at media avail—as opposed to recent years, when he did—because he didn’t know he didn’t have to until before shortly before tip-off.

Ty Lue, on the other hand, will likely stay with what’s been working the last few games with Tristan Thompson in the starting lineup along with LeBron, Kevin Love, George Hill and JR Smith. We’ll see if any adjustments made by the President will force more tinkering by Ty.
Sticking to my non-predictions of playoff games, but I will say that I believe the Cavs will win once in Boston… either tonight or Game 7.
Catch all the action starting at 8:30pm EST on ESPN… and, as always, chime in below with your thoughts…
This game is an example of why you want home court. Especially as LeBron gets older he needs to have home games for his crappier teammates.
I can’t figure out if this is good or bad for Kyrie…
If he returns, the pressure will be on to at least match this year’s success. What happens if they get bounced before the ECF next year? Blame game
Not a concidence that Lebron+Korver means come back,
If we had hit our FTs, we are within striking distance right now. Still, 12 is doable.
Man, it’s tough to win when your starting back court combines to go 2-11… luckily Rozier is even worse by himself at 1-11…
And he’s missing bunnies and open threes… whatever JR has, it apparently is contagious.
And the Celtics are only shooting 36%. This game was there for the taking
The backups have so much more energy…. now just need to keep game pressure on the Celtics…. they’re young.
Still some time left …be interesting if Lue puts Love in or rides lineup
Boston is playing poorly enough for the Cavs to steal it. Still a good chance
I hate when Cavs play just well enough to remind us that this game was winnable even after spotting them a huge lead in the 1st
Cavs just got away with that James TO and the free drive to the hoop / missed layup with a bunch of Cavs just watching
Well, this is over now… Green just hit a corner three…
He’s going to attempt six more before the game is over, because he now has the confidence of that one make.
Green actually does a nice job on defense… Bron throws it away on the other end…
i think if Lue puts Bron back in.. he ought to have pink slip tomorrow morning… it’s bad enough that he can’t figure out lineups…. he’s so awful… likely another superb post game conference talk coming…..
“err.. i thought we played well.. thought JR and Green played w/ energy and grit…thought Bron was off though.. all his fault for not scoring 50 and assisting 15…otherwise, we played really well”
If the Celtics want to let the Cavs back in… they should keep jacking off balance long threes…
it’s not just JR.. it’s JR, Hill, Hood who has now totally glued to bench… we just have no consistent guard scorers who can help Bron when he’s not at best.. Love is ok but he alone can’t do it….
we need to win out now… and that will be very challenging to say the least….
Ten bucks that Lue has no idea what’s going on.
Lue trying to lose his job …no other reason to have guys on floor that can’t cintrib

Just keep Bron and KLove in the bench. This game is over.
Home court matters. Regular season matters.
Boston deserves to win this series.
I mean, why even put Bron back in at this point?
Make some history
I didn’t think JR was done… games like this make me question my sanity…
just let bron sit.. he’s tired… only 1 day off b4 game 6… just rest…

We need Calderon & Cedi to play more.
Not that it matters, but another trash call by the refs.
Please convince me to watch this quarter…or don’t…
No Love… no LBJ… Lue white flag?
hey if we’re gonna give up with this lineup can we try cedi?
Terrible call, as usual.
Pretty late call on that charge…
Love the energy Nance!!!
You know, if we got our crap together, hit some shots, & stopped turning it over, we could win this. Dear Ty:
1) They play 7 guys. Speed the game up. Play MORE guys. Run them into the ground.
2) They play 7 guys. Any foul trouble is nearly catastrophic. We should attack the rack relentlessly.
Basic strategy. Instead we play slow so Bron can try to play 44 minutes.
I’d really love to listen to Lue explain why Jeff Green is good at basketball.
Scored 68 in the first half in Cleveland and just 60 through 3 quarters tonight. Clarkson third leading scorer with just 6 pts says it all on no one else contributing.
Like someone posted before if the Cavs can’t get stops and mount a comeback against the Celtics then they have no place in the NBA finals.
Lue trying to relive 2016 and getting fired in process…team had same sloppiness last game but was making shots
If the Cavs had hit all of their FTs… they’d only be down 11… lol
Meanwhile, can Cody Allen get a 4-out save with a 1-0 lead and a runner on first?
now i get it why so many Cavs fans actually rather get beat by Celtics than go to the finals…
Just not true.
Can’t blame other guys when the primary ball handlers (LBJ, Hill) literally ran no plays the entire game. Stand at top of the key, throw the ball to a guy being doubled in the post, watch the mediocrity.
this game is done…. back to watching 2 high quality teams play tomorrow night…. this is for 3-4th place anyway….
High quality teams… lol
Really tired of watching Jeff Green attempting to play basketball.
This game is not fun to watch.
I don’t want to see Green take the ball up the court ever again. Or Clarkson doing his best Kyrie-YOLO impersonation where he ignores the rest of his team while he drives into the teeth of the defense.
Let’s hope Lue is fired at the end of the season, no matter where we finish.
I will repeat: 60 freaking points. Can’t beat the Suns with that.
Oh JC… why are you such a scarecrow?
You cannot play Jeff green in boston
BLOCKED BY NANCE AGAIN!
Another TO.
60 freaking points.
Jeff Gren is poison. Poison.
Oh Jeff Green you vex me so!
God, Clarkson is poison unless he is shooting WIDE OPEN threes…
This is a November game between two mediocre teams
How are they not running any screens for Korver?
They are playing 7 guys.
We should play 11 & up the tempo.
Damn… you gotta hit that Kev…
Another TO out of a TO.
The frustrating thing is that the Celtics don’t seem to be playing all that well on either side of the ball. This is not the Celtics winning, but rather the Cavs losing.
FGs: Bron 10/18, Love 6/11, Hill & JR 1/5 each, TT 0/3.
Need Korver and someone else to actually contribute something…
LeBron must be gassed. Since when doesn’t he block that runout Tatum had?
Or maybe LeBron just wants to mount the biggest fourth quarter comeback in ECF history…
Cavs need to get this back close to 10 before end of third…
Let’s hope Lue actually rests either James or Love. They cant play the whole 2nd half.
Where are Nance and Korver?
Good question!
Again the Cavs can’t get defensive stops and just getting outplayed.
I HATE LUE.
This is one of the least aggressive games I’ve ever seen LeBron play… meanwhile he still has 24 points…
Cavs just just don’t te
Trust the pass at all.
