Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors, Game 2 (Do They Blow It Up?)
2018-05-03The Cavs return to the Air Canada Center for game 2 against the Raptors, and the stakes are actually high, just not for the Wine & Gold. The Raptors have faced their demise against the Cavs in the past two playoffs. Last year Cleveland beat them in just four games after taking six games to do the same in the 2016 playoffs. If the Cavs can take game two tonight, the Raptors will hear the noise that they just cannot get past LeBron James.
It’s hard to see them being able to come back from 0-2 and win at least two games on the road or even win four of the remaining five games. I’m getting ahead of myself though. Game one in the series was hard fought by both teams, the Cavs just weathered the storm better down the stretch after coming back from being down by as many as 13 points. Let’s get into tonight’s game.
Three Things To Watch
1. LeBron had a bad game 1. He said so himself to media. He put up 26 hitting just 12-30 from the floor and 1-8 from deep. He also contributed 13 assists and 11 boards. LeBron is sort of right, even though was a large reason why the team won. He won’t be that inefficient again, and he won’t be as tired as he was in game one after playing an emotional game seven against Indy just a day before. The Raptors may think they covered LeBron well last game, but they are fooling themselves. James was just off.
2. Kyle Korver got 17 shots up in game one. That must continue. He hit five of his 12 3-points shots. J.R. Smith needs to keep shooting too. He dropped five of his six 3s. Now, the Cavs must use that gravity this game. Korver and J.R. took just one shot at the rim between the both of them in game one. Teams don’t expect them to cut into the paint, so they can get quality looks when they do actually go down low. Watch in the video below how J.R. Smith is guarded after setting a screen for George Hill. Both Toronto players are pointing to the 3-line. That’s where they assume he’s going. Smith misses the layup shot, but that shot will be there for both him and Korver all night if they want it.
3. The Cavs started Kyle Korver on OG Anunoby. LeBron James started on Serge Ibaka. Tyronn Lue should consider switching those assignments. OG was able to burn Korver a few times with pure speed. He’s not the best 3-point shooter and he’s young, so you don’t necessarily need to stay out on him. LeBron James should cover OG mainly because it would allow him to drop back into the paint with less worry than when he is on Ibaka. OG wants to drive when he can or cut to the hoop. James will stop him if he does that and if he rains from deep, so be it. Serge Ibaka is a good cover for Korver because he’s the type of guy that’s been popping out to 3-land more frequently. Korver doesn’t need to help down low as often as he did in game one. He’s not as well suited to that as James. Ibaka took just three of his eight shots in the paint, so he’s not trying to bang. One of his inside shots was even a tip-in. Korver may not be the biggest guy, but he can play decent post defense and he will stop a lot of the tip-ins that happened in game one just because he boxes out consistently.
The Cavs have a great chance tonight. They survived a ‘poor’ LeBron game and got the win. James should be looking to dominate and take this series quickly with a bounce back performance, so I’m picking Cavs 121-111.
Shaq and Barkley are ignoring Kenny Smith’s point but I think Smith is onto something. Double LeBron, force everyone else to make plays…. test the Cavs’ chemistry.
3 days ago: “Do what Indy did. Let LeBron get his but don’t let the rest of the team get going”
That’s what Shaq and Barkley were saying…. but the problem with “LeBron getting his” is that that ALSO means he’s passing and making plays all over. Just take the ball out of his hands and force the Cavs to play 4 vs. 3 without LeBron. Do the Cavs have enough chemistry with Clarkson, Hood, barely used TT, Hill, Green, JR, KLOVE????
Yeah, but the problem is Toronto is doing neither. They have been awful covering shooters compared to Indy. I don’t think you trap or double or send a ton of help at all. LBJ hit a million crazy shots tonight. If I was the raps I would be like awesome. However, they left shooters open all night. Also the Miles on love thing was idiotic. They have been just bad defensively and more importantly, soft relative to Indy.
Yup…. they’re defensive analytics over the regular season really appears to be fool’s gold. They’re nowhere near the defensive team Indiana was.
they are Atlanta from several years ago when they won 66 games. great continuity, no generational talent.
i kinda feel like he would shred them even worse. Every time they doubled tonight we got a wide open look and made most of them
I didn’t see them double KLOVE or LBJ at all tonight and they both feasted. And do you trust anybody but LeBron to make plays for others on a consistent basis?
Really depends on where the doubles come. In the post, you are asking for a skip pass. Depending on who doubles, that pass may be easier or harder to recover to. Double him on screens and you are asking to lose in my opinion because he will likely find a cutter, worst scenario or a guy on the wing, also bad. I would double him before the cavs even get into half court actions with hyper aggressive traps. The more you make the other guys do, the better. Not only that, the teams that have done the best have always… Read more »
Bingo…. doubling him before the half court actions begin…. that’s exactly what Smith was talking about.
Ben Simmons crapping the bed tonight. Cavs just need to run the table, rest up, then let’s see LBJ take another run at GSW.
How?? How could philly lose to this team twice in a row? Neither team has any real playoff experience outside of Horford and Reddick, and both those guys are playoff losers
They are probably by far the best defensive team in the east, and better defensively without Kyrie.
Hmm. Boston could cause similar problems to the Pacers for us with their defense. Surprised they came back. I think Philly has to win this game. Not sure they are experienced enough to win a series down 2-0.
Agreed…. except I think the Cavs have the same mental edge against Boston that they do against Toronto. They’ll exploit Horford just like they have with JV. Also agree that Philly needs this game, although going to Philly will be tough on Rozier, Tatum, and Brown who all are young guys going into a hostile environment.
Maybe. Feel like this is kind of a different Boston team mentally. Horford is still there, but IT is gone, one of the main guys we could exploit. I think Smart and Rozier could cause serious problems for us similar to the pacers.
The Pacers size was what bothered us. Boston will try to be as physical but the impact wont be the same
Smart is a as big as dipo and he is as physical as they come on the perimeter. Rozier is bigger than Collison and is also physical. They don’t have a Lebron stopper but neither did Indy. Brown is probably more suited to bother him than anyone on indy save Thad Young. Similarly, Love isn’t going to be able to post Baynes. If Ty Lue goes with tt at 5 Love will have to torch Horford because I think Boston will shut down everyone but LBJ.
The Morris twins have also made things difficult in the past and Boston has Marcus. They haven’t stopped him, but he has the size to make things physical.
Neither Smart nor Rozier are the offensive threat that Oladipo was IMO. Smart’s also a headcase that can’t shoot the 3. I think if anyone’s gonna cause problems it’s Jaylen Brown and Morris as far as physical defense.
For sure. Offensively the guards are not near Dipo. I think within their system they may have more talent if guys like Tatum and Brown can continue to produce. And, overall, Boston is better defensively.
No question Boston’s good defensively. But how are they going to score? I think Baynes is completely unplayable. Horford always gets owned. If they go small, LBJ is going to the hoop over and over again. Honestly, whoever said that Indiana was CLE’s toughest test might’ve been right…. I think it’s because they had two bigs who could score.
On Baynes, maybe. I think if you play him on love, you basically shut loves water off. Put Horford on a cross match with a guard and dare smith or Korver to make something happen off the dribble. Not going to happen. Then Brown on James. Rozier and Smart will shutdown Hill and either Korver or smith. Only issue is smith and Korver coming off screens, but as long as the screeners man gets out to contest you shut the pindowns down.
why do you even cheer for the cavs JOHN B? You come up with every possible way we can lose and never come up with any ways we have advantages lol
Ok, here. Advantage: Lebron. Boston cannot stop him. All they can do is maybe shut down everyone else. That likely isn’t enough.
Also, I like the intellectual game of game planning for LBJ. Boston should be/would be the underdog, so given that, I find it intellectually stimulating to come up with ideas of how that could change. It would be easy just to say LBJ>>>so cavs win.
Except assuming Boston can shut everyone else down without evidence is basically the flip side of that coin. They haven’t every shown the ability to shut down jr, Kyle, Kevin, and Tristan for any length of time.
Past teams haven’t, this team might be able to make it way tougher on the other guys. Way different team than previous years on d.
we’ve torched them already this year.
I don’t put a ton of stock in that post trade game. Guys were juiced. Post trade games can be weird. Clarkson, Nance, and Hood were seemingly different players and basically torched the Celtics. Also I hate to say it, but Smart is kind of their defensive MVP. They played way worse d with him out and weren’t really the same team at least based off Boston blog sites.
https://www.celticsblog.com/2018/2/19/17025824/marcus-smart-pivotal-to-boston-celtics-postseason-chances-nba-defense-kyrie-irving-al-horford
i get that. smart could cause some issues. I still think you’re assuming they will give us problems based on conjecture, and assuming Lebron’s teammates will suck for no real reason.
No way does Baynes shut off KLOVE…. they’d do exactly what they’re doing to JV…. except that JV is 3x the player on offense Baynes is. Horford on a cross match with a guard??? He’s getting roasted like he always does. That’s precisely how the Cavs attack him… they would be playing into the Cavs’ hands by doing that. Brown can’t defend James on the block…. that’s where they’ll go. So, by your plan James is getting whatever he wants on the block and guards are getting open 3s against Horford defending them. I think their only chance is to… Read more »
I dunno. I think Baynes is a better defensive player than JV. Love did most of his damage in the paint tonight against small guys. Stick him in the corner and the damage is mitigated. But yeah a cross match could be problematic unless whoever Horford is matched on is stuck in the corner. I don’t have much faith as JR or Korver as a playmaker even against Horford. Pin downs could cause problems obviously but then those can be negated by pressure from the screeners guy or a switch, which of course could lead to open rollers if the… Read more »
Horford gets owned by TT and sometimes love. If Baynes is on love and tt isn’t in, then Horford gets hidden on a cross match where he guards Korver/JR. Sure pindowns, but those can be schemed for. I don’t think love will be able to do anything against Baynes. Not quick enough to completely go around, and definitely not strong enough in the post.
Essentially, LBJ may have to carry the offense again if Boston crossmatches and Cleveland doesn’t play TT. That will probably work but Brown/Morris will likely challenge him physically as much as Thad young.
Also I can’t really answer how they will score, especially with a Baynes and Morris lineup I put forth below. Only way would maybe be some Brad Stevens system magic. If the cavs finish the raptors early that obviously becomes less likely given the amount of time Lue and co would have to prepare for their plays.
LOL…. Barkley not mincing words…. and he’s right.
Like two days ago? “Charles Barkley explains why Cavs can’t beat Raptors”
No… he was speaking on this Philly/Boston game. Tore into Philly’s game management. They’re roasting him about LeBronto LMAO.
This is what I thought this series was going to look like from the start.
Boston is 4/5 games.
Philly is a tough matchup for us. Really tough.
Passive aggressive shade.
CJ wants to come home so bad! He wants to be what Kyrie was meant to be. Imagine the Canton/Akron connection!!!!
Omg get him here asap
I still got 76ers in 5. Cavs/76ers may make Pacers look elementary but in a totally different way
Welp
JUST WONDERING ABOUT LNJ MENTAL STATE IS RIGHT NOW —-IF NEEDED– IS HE CAPABLE OF GIVING US SOLID MINUTES ?
Taking cyanide?
Does ‘bonkers’ mean ‘silent’?
Not so silent now….
Poor Al Horford – finding his shot a little harder to come by now someone is actually picking him up.
‘Bron just went plaid
noice
That’s a lot of plaid
Hope Bill Simmons is enjoying this game. In person, I hope.
THEY MISS -MILLER —-MAN CAN WE GET THIS TYPE OF GAME– ( OR CLOSE TO IT )- FROM KLOVE EVERY GAME —THAT WOULD BE HUGE !!!
In bad news, indians lose in game 1. Bullpen is a major weakness.
Prediction: The bullpen will be fixed by July, and the Indians will be in first place anyway.
Yes, hopefully. Thankfully they are in the AL central.
That definitely helps. And Shapiro/Antonetti have remade the bullpen during the season a few times previously.
Shaw always made me nervous, but I’m sure they miss him.
Big loss. Solid guy who ate up a lot of innings and only occasionally had collapses.

Wow… Casey going with a “I got to look at the tape” response!
Coaches are all copycats
Here’s a head start: when KLove posts up CJ Miles and takes him to the cleaners five straight times….do something different.

shades of sweeping the 60-win Atlanta Hawks
Actually, Redick is the only person who has scored… Redick 8, Celts 0
Pod tonight?
Probably…
Should be a happy group.
The Celtics have not scored in the first three minutes… 8-0 Philly
Earnie needs to go with a “game 3 if necessary”
YES!!!!!!

Question. Was this game or game 1 more demoralizing for raptors? Game one they should have won. This game they just get blitzed. Dunno. Both utterly demoralizing in their own way.
After the first one they had hope. That should be gone now.
This game for sure. The firs they lost because of a few missed putbacks. This game curb stumped.
*they were
Game 2 for sure, imo. They were playing well offensively and still lost by 18. Degree of difficulty of LeBron’s shots is so demoralizing because there’s nothing you can do to stop it.
This one for sure.
No silver linings tonight. Plus now they are 0-2 down heading to the Q.
Probably true. Though losing game 1 likely makes this so much exponentially worse. I kind of expected the raptors to lose big at least one game. If they won game 1 they could have shrugged this off as just a LeBron supernova game.
Honestly good question.. I’d say game 1. I think Barkley said it’s over if they didn’t win game 1.
Scott van Pelt just destroying the Raptors right now… hilarious
Major tech failure for Legler on ESPN wrap up. Lol. Ends up having to just describe highlights.
67-47 in the second half…
https://twitter.com/kpelton/status/992201756334477313
that’s ridiculous!
Wow, crazy stats.
That was great to watch. We looked awesome!!
All the experts who said yes Toronto are the better team but won’t bet against LBJ are indeed looking very expert right now.
Analytics dweebs with no common sense.
I do not think the Raps are better than us as a team. Indy yes. Toronto no.
That was a beat down.
Only 3 TOs. Incredible.
That was a fun ride
That was one the most enjoyable watches since destroying Boston or Atlanta.
Amen. We just have their number.
Hopefully Boston & Philly go 7 bruising ones.
Also 7 games for every series in the West…
Amen to that! Get some rest into the ECF, cruise into the Finals… then watch LBJ be GOAT.
Thought the broadcaster just said “So long for Toronto”. Would have been more apt.
Just a complete annihilation of the Raps…
That second half was just a complete annihilation.
If we win game 3, Raptors will mail game 4 in.
LeBron…talking about KLove says “he was the All Star that we lo…we’ve grown to love.”
Hahahaha
“total disembowelment of Toronto” lmaooooooo
Bron: 43/14/8 on 19/28 and 1/3 from deep & 4/8 FTs and +20.
Love: 31/11 on 11/21 after an 0-3 start. 2/6 from deep. +21.
Hill: 13 pts on 5/8. +20.
JR: 15 pts on 5/8 & 2/3 from deep. +19.
Steph Green: 14 pts on 5/8 & 4/6 from deep. +3.
What a relief to see a huge game from Love…of course, we know what to expect from Steph Green…
When did he become Steph Green?
Last two games apparently.
Pretty big win…

JC loses his range.
Ty Lue is taking a victory Shump tonight for sticking with Kevin
Victory Shumps are the best shumps.
This is four in a row vs Toronto this season…
CEDI!!!!
Jordan Clarkson, Lord Commander of Garbage Time.
Pressure off… so JC lights it up… LOL
JC finds his range.
Another one!
I wanna see ZZ and Cedi!

Jonas really wanted to make sure he got the crowd to their feet with that dunk…
Altman sitting there like “whaddup b****es”
for having LeBron on his team?
As long as we don’t collapse against Toronto and we end up playing Boston ec finals, I like where we are at
I actually feel bad for the Toronto fans.
https://twitter.com/JasonLloydNBA/status/992198635751325696
Bron out.
Love gonna get 30.
https://twitter.com/kpelton/status/992198394197168128
Only 3 TOs. And onecwas a 24 second after an airball.
So in England there’s a concept of a freehold versus a leasehold in home ownership. Leaseholds are more common and it means that even if you own your house, you still technically rent the land from someone else.
LeBron is the Raptors land owner

Didn’t he just say Toronto was a way better team than the Cavs like two days ago?
Probably, but he’s also really stupid.
cedi gonna come in before hood in second half – just like we all wanted
