Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors, Game 1 (#TryTryAgain)
2018-05-01The Toronto Raptors did not succeed against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 playoffs, losing in six games… so they tried again in the 2017 playoffs… and got swept. 2018 brings another year, and another opportunity to try, try again. Only, this matchup should be different because neither of these teams is really the same as they once were.
The team from the North may still have many recognizable names from their past two iterations, led by an All-Star back court tandem of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, and featuring big men Jonas Valanciunas and Serge Ibaka in their starting five. However, the difference isn’t only in their overhauled bench unit, but also in their overall philosophy of play as a team under head coach Dwayne Casey. The Raps have mostly transformed themselves away from an ISO heavy reliance on their star guards, and have embraced a balanced inside-out attack. They have real gunners on the perimeter, including CJ Miles, Fred VanVleet and Delon Wright, in addition to the already dangerous Lowry. Even DeRozan spent last summer focusing on his three ball with a decent degree of success. Add some length and energy in the form of Pascal Siakam and Jacob Poeltl, and there’s a demonstrable reason why Toronto finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Which leads to another thing that’s different… this being the first time the Raptors have home court advantage over the Cavaliers. That’s because the wine & gold limp across the border, battered and bruised from a roller-coaster season that landed them in the four seed, and led to a harrowingly physical series against the upstart Indiana Pacers. Injuries, roster upheaval and role uncertainty have all plagued the Cavs, requiring LeBron James to put forth a near superhuman effort to carry the team much sooner in these playoffs than anyone expected. Without some timely help here and there from the few veterans populating the Cleveland roster, the Raptors could have very well not even had the opportunity to try and redeem themselves against their biggest stumbling block to the NBA Finals.
So, all should be set up well for Toronto, right? They’ve got LeBron and the Cavs right where they want them, no? And, they’ll have all the fans in The Six screaming for possibly four home games, eh?
Yeah, not so fast. There’s a reason Canadians don’t typically have a high degree of confidence in these Raptors. Because when the pressure is on, they aren’t always the most mentally tough team. Sure, they finally exorcised the demons of playoff Game 1s in the first round against the Wizards (they had lost 10 straight Game 1s before that), but they also still seem to be at their shakiest when playing Cleveland. Even with this new, reconstituted squad, they went just 1-2 against the Cavs in the regular season… with the only win coming during that dark period when Isaiah Thomas started for Cleveland. They lost one of the signature games of the season (for the Cavs anyway) 132-129, when LeBron, missing five teammates and his head coach, scored 35 points with 17 assists and zero turnovers to overcome a 79 point half by the Raptors. During the second half of that game, Toronto reverted back to their old ISO ways as the Cavs applied pressure, and there’s no question Cleveland will look to do that once again.
No word yet on which starting five Ty Lue will incorporate in Game 1… although it does sound like George Hill’s back will allow him to suit up and be available…
Ty Lue wouldn't reveal his starting lineup for Game 1. Tristan Thompson was a hero in Game 7, but Jeff Green was very effective against the Raps in the Cavs' two regular season wins against them when they went small. Lue also said George Hill's back is "good" to go.

One thing for sure, however, if the Cavs hope to maintain their dominance over the Raptors, they will once again need some heroics from LeBron James, as well as solid contributions from their veterans. It would be a bonus to see one of their young guys (Hood, Clarkson, Nance Jr.) have a good series, but if the Cavs can defend the way they did against the Pacers (for most of the first round), they should have at least a decent chance to get back to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Sticking with my non-predictions for the playoffs, but I do think there’s a good possibility the Cavs can steal Game 1, especially if they can put the requisite pressure on the Raps.
Catch all the action on TNT starting at 8pm EST… and, as always, chime in below…
GO CAVS!
Dwayne Casey looks PISSED in the post game presser…
I get it.

That’s fair. I was terrified Derozan would take the shot.
Brutal but true
The JV collapse at the end…

I was POSITIVE one of those tips was going in. Cavs had to win after that miracle.
I was positive that Van fleet three was going in after no one was within 15 feet of him. Forgot he had a hurt shoulder though.
Still I don’t expect the Cavs we’re trying to leave him THAT wide open even taking that into account.
Wow. He was having a good game too. The choking appears to be a team wide thing.

Drake being tough behind his goon squad
Pels should be playing stall ball…but they aren’t…
What a brain fart at the end of the first
Thursday will probably be a loss, but not a disaster if so…
Yep… no matter what, they’ve got home court now…
Why do you say that?
Cavs may be coasting (and tired), and desperation for Raps…
True enough. But a chance to basically knock them out. Get up 2-0 and they could be looking at Broomsville.
Man. I cannot remember the last time we won a game where Bron played this bad. Still, he did have a triple double. Westbrook variety.
Ugly beats uglier.
Bron 12/30 and 1/6 on FTs and did not score in OT. Love 3-13. Hill 2-7. Clarkson 2-7. Hood 1-5. But we still won.
Korver was good 7/17 and 5/12 from deep for 19 pts.
TT, Green, & JR were fantastic. TT 14 &12 on 5/8 and some big FTs. Green 4/4 and 7/8 from the line for an efficient 16 and team high +10. JR 20 pts on 6/11 and 5/6 from deep.
And Love hit someone in the face.
If we can get Nance some run by starting TT, I would go for it.
That was a beautiful game after the grindfest against Indy…
Jeff Green though! Ty Lue should flex on all of us haha
Was solid. The love at center lineup was nonsensical though.
This series he can actually be useful at center…
It wasn’t working in the first and Lue waited forever to take him out. Cavs played way better with tt and love together this game in my opinion. Love can’t take JV in the post but he can do some stuff with smaller guys.
Kev was -20 by the third quarter… wound up -7… good recovery
NO just taking awful shots.
Curry panic afflicting them…
TT has that 2015 back-against-the-wall game going now. JR hopping on board too. Who’s next?
Damn, still 47 (42 in regulation) minutes for LeBron . Only one day of rest in between all the games in this series. I am sure that had to have play some role in him taking more outside jumpers tonight.
Basically a seven man rotation tonight. Monster games from Kyle, TT, JR.
Obviously LeBron.
Clarkson had a couple good moments early & then it got away from him.
Time for Kev to get going.
Forgot about him
After the grindfest with the Pacers… this was fun to watch
Best play of the game: Love elbowing DeMar in the chops. Set the tone, Kevin. Set the tone.
If you’re a coach and you let a guy wearing a tshirt under his jersey to take the last shot then you deserve to lose…Casey is such a head case and so are the Raptors….they had every chance to pull this game out and Cavs took it right from them…I don’t think fans like VanFleet anymore…he may get glued to bench, Delon Wright would be better anyways for Raps….kudos to JR, Korver, TT, and Lebron…..Hood and Clarkson are lost causes, Love had some moments late but needs to be better, also looking more from Hill but thought he played solid….on… Read more »
The Raps had it but crumbled under pressure.
As per usual…
Guys like VanVleet and Wright can hit shots when the pressure isn’t on…
Funny thing was that the cavs basically almost tried to give the game back to Toronto several times in the second half and especially in the fourth even though Toronto was doing their absolute best to lose down the stretch. A very very strange game. Feel bad for the raptors fans. Reminds me of some Cleveland baseball/football teams in the past.
This game showed just how good Indy was defensively…
What a crazy win.
Pulled a rabbit out of the hat there.
That crowd took a blow to the cojones ;)
We got LeBron, and they have Demar. I like our chances in close games.
Yup.
Zero O.T. points for LBJ and we still win. When did that happen last?
Never
I missed the first three quarters, but did Lue screw up Love by making him bang against JV in the first half and everything was harder for the Cavs as a result?
Basically…. He needs to let Kev be a 4 in this series…
Yep
Yes. Love wasn’t hitting anything, and was getting abused in the paint. TT actually stabilized the game.
Curry is back… immediately drains a 3
Pels still have the lead though… for now…
Uhg. I hate that guy and that team.
A pedestrian game from Lebron (for him), and at home, and they lose…and I doubt that Lue hands them 20+ easy points with no center next game…
Don’t be surprised.
I wouldn’t wish being a Toronto Raptors fan on my worst enemy… so disheartening…
That was pretty brutal no doubt. I mean the number of possessions Toronto choked may have set a new postseason record.
Eff them.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/991511920984383488?s=19
LOL, or…
Wow! Amazing win, considering…
Big shot by JR and a whole bunch of crazy bounces. Great start to the series!
LeBron missed a bunch of shots, KLove is still MIA and the Cavs still won. Definitely not good for the Raptors.
I think LeBron said, “way to bounce back, Kev”
Boy raptors mental stigma is real against the cavs. I cannot imagine they choke on that many plays down the stretch again, but maybe they just can’t focus. If so, this will be a very short series.
That’s the correct term the raptors just choked.
https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/991511504137740288
Pretty shockingly bad loss no doubt. God they must have had like a combined 20 possessions where they couldn’t make bunnies or wide open threes or just had an unforced turnover down the stretch. Combined with the second qtr sloppiness kind of amazing they were even in it at the end.
Yet they led until OT…
Yeah. I think the cavs could have taken control much earlier. It almost seemed like the cavs knew they would collapse and proceeded to dick around for much of the second half. I wouldn’t be surprised if LBJ was that confident against this team given the history.
Can’t believe we won. LeBron with a nice hug for Love at the end and seems to be telling him to forget about the bad stuff.
TT saying…
G’NIGHT TORONTO
Am I still alive? May have blacked out
LeBron had a good possession when he set up Korver’s three. Did he have any other good possessions in OT?
He was a great decoy.
The one where JR hit a 3 was OK.
A mostly garbage offensively from Bron. 12/30 and 1/6 is brutal. Still had some big plays and helped shut Lowry down.
Valancunas bothers Bron when he goes to the rack.
I hope Ty starts TT next game. Sit Hill. Or pull him (or Korver/Love) early to get TT in.
Goodness that stadium is a morgue right now
TT is good again…he was a man tonight…
Now that his life is in shambles he’s back to focusing on only basketball.
Terribly inefficient game from LeBron… but MAN what a WIN!
Goodnight Toronto!
On short rest…amazing…
Does not bode well for raps. This was their best chance.
If it’s 0.3, it’s academic. Just throw the ball inbounds.
Cavs didn’t make it easy on themselves even though the raptors tried to.
Lol…how did we steal that game…hahahha
No way that’s a foul on Bron.
No, but JR and LBJ were both calling for timeout and refs giving it to them… now gotta inbounds…
5 wins! 11 more to go!
Looked like JR took a timeout? Dumb
He and Bron both…
Wow. If Toronto couldn’t win this one with horrible shooting night from lebron… it might be over in 4
OMFG…what a game…
Wait?
WOW
A foul before the buzzer?
Houdini escape!!
WOW!!!!
Horribly dumb possession by Lebron. That was awful. Cavs trying to give it right back to raptors.
As good as LeBron has been that was a really bad possession there.
Cavs offense in OT: a three from Korver, a three from JR, and the TT follow at the shot-clock buzzer.
I think LeBron hijacked that play
That was awful…just freaking drive it, Lebron…
This one is on LeBron if they lose…
For most of the second half he has been really passive. Jumpshot galore and lots of held possessions.
derozan has that dwayne wade shotblocking skill
If raptors win they’re gonna think they broke their curse. LeBron c’mon. On the flip side if we win curse as strong as ever
Lbj is gaaaaaaasssssssssssed
Live by the sword…
Odds are the Raps are going to hit a bucket here. Let’s go D!!
Argh. Worked too much clock. Prevent offense.
Made no sense. Got a terrible shot and assured Cavs wouldn’t get ball back
But oh welll.
You’re the biggest and strongest player on the floor and you hold the ball outside the three point line for 24 seconds
WTH LEBRON??
