Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors, Game 1 (#TryTryAgain)
2018-05-01The Toronto Raptors did not succeed against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 playoffs, losing in six games… so they tried again in the 2017 playoffs… and got swept. 2018 brings another year, and another opportunity to try, try again. Only, this matchup should be different because neither of these teams is really the same as they once were.
The team from the North may still have many recognizable names from their past two iterations, led by an All-Star back court tandem of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, and featuring big men Jonas Valanciunas and Serge Ibaka in their starting five. However, the difference isn’t only in their overhauled bench unit, but also in their overall philosophy of play as a team under head coach Dwayne Casey. The Raps have mostly transformed themselves away from an ISO heavy reliance on their star guards, and have embraced a balanced inside-out attack. They have real gunners on the perimeter, including CJ Miles, Fred VanVleet and Delon Wright, in addition to the already dangerous Lowry. Even DeRozan spent last summer focusing on his three ball with a decent degree of success. Add some length and energy in the form of Pascal Siakam and Jacob Poeltl, and there’s a demonstrable reason why Toronto finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Which leads to another thing that’s different… this being the first time the Raptors have home court advantage over the Cavaliers. That’s because the wine & gold limp across the border, battered and bruised from a roller-coaster season that landed them in the four seed, and led to a harrowingly physical series against the upstart Indiana Pacers. Injuries, roster upheaval and role uncertainty have all plagued the Cavs, requiring LeBron James to put forth a near superhuman effort to carry the team much sooner in these playoffs than anyone expected. Without some timely help here and there from the few veterans populating the Cleveland roster, the Raptors could have very well not even had the opportunity to try and redeem themselves against their biggest stumbling block to the NBA Finals.
So, all should be set up well for Toronto, right? They’ve got LeBron and the Cavs right where they want them, no? And, they’ll have all the fans in The Six screaming for possibly four home games, eh?
Yeah, not so fast. There’s a reason Canadians don’t typically have a high degree of confidence in these Raptors. Because when the pressure is on, they aren’t always the most mentally tough team. Sure, they finally exorcised the demons of playoff Game 1s in the first round against the Wizards (they had lost 10 straight Game 1s before that), but they also still seem to be at their shakiest when playing Cleveland. Even with this new, reconstituted squad, they went just 1-2 against the Cavs in the regular season… with the only win coming during that dark period when Isaiah Thomas started for Cleveland. They lost one of the signature games of the season (for the Cavs anyway) 132-129, when LeBron, missing five teammates and his head coach, scored 35 points with 17 assists and zero turnovers to overcome a 79 point half by the Raptors. During the second half of that game, Toronto reverted back to their old ISO ways as the Cavs applied pressure, and there’s no question Cleveland will look to do that once again.
No word yet on which starting five Ty Lue will incorporate in Game 1… although it does sound like George Hill’s back will allow him to suit up and be available…
Ty Lue wouldn't reveal his starting lineup for Game 1. Tristan Thompson was a hero in Game 7, but Jeff Green was very effective against the Raps in the Cavs' two regular season wins against them when they went small. Lue also said George Hill's back is "good" to go.

One thing for sure, however, if the Cavs hope to maintain their dominance over the Raptors, they will once again need some heroics from LeBron James, as well as solid contributions from their veterans. It would be a bonus to see one of their young guys (Hood, Clarkson, Nance Jr.) have a good series, but if the Cavs can defend the way they did against the Pacers (for most of the first round), they should have at least a decent chance to get back to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Sticking with my non-predictions for the playoffs, but I do think there’s a good possibility the Cavs can steal Game 1, especially if they can put the requisite pressure on the Raps.
Catch all the action on TNT starting at 8pm EST… and, as always, chime in below…
GO CAVS!
We’re going to the Finals…
Also, for the record, Usher v Drake is a better match up than Perk…Perk’s falsetto is shit.
Sorry all, clipboard snafu. Meant to post this:

It was maddening waiting for Lue to put Tristan on Valencunias…he almost cost us game with his slow ass adjustments. I am basketball amateur and I figured it out after first 6 points…yikes. Lue got to go!
These game photos from the PD are incredible

Those are spectacular!
Very unsurprising:
Stark reality… hope Ty Lue sees this…
I wouldn’t bet on it.
Ty ‘likes his energy off the bench.’
When Bray is hitting his froggy threes, they are just about impossible to beat…
Wut the actual wut??

Yeah, freaking Drake wants a piece of Perk ‘in real life’…get real, you putz…
Drake would get destroyed by Angry Smurf…
He had body guards with him. Guarantee it was the only reason he even considers running his mouth. If Perkins actually goes after him, Drake sacrifices his body guards while running away. No doubt this is how that would go down.
You’re talking about a six foot tall 190 pound guy versus a 6’9″ 260 pound dude. He wouldn’t stand a chance even if he was a professional MMA fighter.
Drake is such a fake tough guy.
Mickey Mouse club motherf’r.
LOL.
Fyi. Seriously great live thread intro, EG.
Spot on
Thanks Nate!
No question. Just hope it’s better by june. Yes, cavs are in the finals.
Along with Hill’s back. He’s probably maxed out on shots for a few weeks.
Would pels be better with Cousins?
No
Probably.
Lue pregame: Fewer minutes for Lebron.
Lebron plays season high 47 minutes.
Hard to blame him much for that with the OT. He did rest him more than most of the Pacer games.
Maybe. Still played 42 without OT. Just think it’s funny. Every coach says he plays too many minutes and then plays him every second they can.
I think 42 is about right in a playoff game. He seems fresh enough in the 4th with that.
What a weird schedule coming up with both East series being played on the same days and at least a couple of 6 p.m. games (Cavs Thursday, Sixers-Celtics Monday).
Yeah, super-convenient 3 p.m. on the West Coast.
Has anyone ever seen someone look more lost on a basketball court than Rodney Hood?
Anthony bennett
Kevin Love in the first half.
Pels doing a better job of running an offense to retake the lead.
Draymond is still an amazing defender
Man them Klutch boys taking regular season chill mode to another level. But it’s working
Are marv and CWebb the oddest broadcast combo ever?
Still on a high. One of my favorite playoff games ever.
Any way to watch it again other than dvr? (Which I don’t currently have)
Eastern European streaming feeds
Make sure your antivirus and firewall are strong.
Otherwise the Russians might influence the outcome of the game.
They are also uploaded to NBA League Pass. I’m rewatching the 4Q and OT now.
Hmm, I may pass for now, but thanks.
Ugly games need love too.
Seriously, I get it. Gritty over pretty.
Pels driving me nuts with shot selection.
There is selection? I see no evidence for that.
We did not turn it over much. Only 5 TOs as a team. In an OT game.
If you do not turn it over, your margin for error gets a lot bigger.
I mean, Lowry & DeRozan both shot 50% from the field and JV had 21/21. Bron & Kev were 15/43.
And we won.
Absolutely – key to the game
Yep. Raps turnovers actually got the Cavs back in the game.
Fratello with a great analysis on Fox Ohio postgame: Pacers played everyone straight up and forced LeBron to best them. LeBron drawing much more attention against Toronto and the shooters have more room. They’re hitting shots.
I would make all the one dimensional Cavs make a play.
Good half Warriors and Pels, but Pels won’t have a chance at that pace…
Gross that Klay YOLO three to beat the buzzer
LBJ is so damn good that he played poorly and still had a triple double. There’s no way even he could recover from the Indy series in just a day. He drew the usual attention from Toronto and Korver and JR were served dimes graciously. Props to them for making shots and props to Love (the elbow) and Perk (calling Drake on his BS tough talk) for setting the tone.
I like Jrue a lot, he’s taking way too many quick jumpers.
People who question why the Cavs struggled s much again indy don’t realize how good indy is and how bad of a matchup they are for the Cavs.
Yeah, I saw a lot of ‘expert analysis’ that was basically: Indy took Cleveland to 7 and Toronto > Indy, so I am taking Toronto.
It doesn’t work that way. Indy was hot after Jan (5th best in the league, I heard) and they have more established guys who can hurt you.
We have Toronto’s number.
Also “Toronto No. 1 in East so they must be better.”

Fer sure…
If we have to adjust at some point… so Ty Lue…

So many heros tonight. Jeff and TT from the line, Kyle and JR from three. Even love with huge D boards in the fourth.y favorite game if this postseason so far.
I like that the Cavs bring in Fratello for the playoff post games…
Me too
He was Nets play by play until very recently if not still
Also the Ukrainian national team coach.
I wonder if he could run the actual games?
Indy played better D.
Exponentially better…
Undoubtedly. Raptors left a lot of shooters open tonight and the wrong guys for crucial stretches. They also don’t close out near as well or recover and rotate near as quick.

love golliver and the open floor podcast
I love it, and I never used to like Sharp as a writer. They are hilarious, particularly Golliver.
KD not shooting well…
Pels taking too many quick shots. I would try to grind them with AD scoring 48 points…
If the Finals wind up still being Cavs v. Warriors Pt. IV… at least it’ll be an interesting journey…
Why the hell is NO playing at the Warriors pace?
The world wonders…
They want to play fast. They are doing it on purpose. Gentry said so. Me, I would it slow down and play through Davis every time.
