Cavs Get Fourth Pick in Upcoming Draft 2012-05-30 Off By Colin McGowan I enjoyed the Kyrie Irving Era. Discuss. Links to the Present: Lottery Edition II: Electric Boogaloo What This Means
I’ve heard crazy rumors –mostly coming from those clowns on sports radio–talking about how the Cavs should give up the farm to move up to the two slot and take Beal. How ridiculous. For one, Beal will still be around at no. 4, if the Cavs would want him, but why waste this pick on an undersized shooting guard that is a dime a dozen in the NBA?The top prospect in the draft, apart from the consensus no. 1 pick Davis, is Andre Drummond. Any scout worth his salt understands this, and an athletic, talented big man who is only… Read more »
I don’t know what all the fuss is about…..we either get Davis/MKG/Beal/Robinson…..isn’t that what we want? Can’t you imagine Irving throwing oops to Robinson all day! Remember Greg Oden anyone? Guy with a ton of potential and still worked hard, evening playing through a wrist injury? BUST! Robinson is way more developed than Drummond who was lackluster at best. Robinson has the drive and motivation to win (i.e. his run to the title game) whereas when you hear Drummond you respond with “Who?”. Please don’t draft Drummond.
Matthew,
Not only that, but Stern was rigging the lottery for New Orleans no matter what. The coin flip was just a smoke screen.
Anyone who’s saying we should’ve lost the coin flip… it makes absolutely no difference. The coin flip determines HOW many balls we had. We had 138 and the Hornets had 137. The numbers drawn matched the Hornets’ numbers, whether or not the Cavs won or lost the coin toss. But anyway, I’m definitely disappointed by the result (and feeling sympathetic and slightly bemused for the Bobcats). Hopefully Chris Grant and management will study the combine well and get a good pick out of what we can. I’d love if Brad Beal drops for us, and I don’t really want Thomas… Read more »
A trade up is always possible. Gilbert took on 14 million in the Baron deal for the 8th best lottery odds. Would they take on a bad deal for the man they want? The Bobcats have multiple bad contracts and a broke owner with holes everywhere. Moving down two spots and sending out Diop’s deal to move down two picks is a possibility. Also, the Bobcats don’t have a 2016 first rounder from the Tyrus Thomas deal. If Grant falls in love with Beal or MKG, Gilbert will give him the ammo to pull it off.
I was just hoping for at least the 2nd or 3rd pick, because the guy I really wanted to see was MKG. Already knows and gets along with Kyrie, and everyone’s report says he has tremendous work ethic. We need to surround Kyrie with talent that is willing to work hard to win, and by all accounts that’s exactly what MKG is…
Didn’t Kyrie play HS ball with MKG? Maybe Kyrie will talk him into tanking at the combine/workouts so he slides by draft-day… one can only hope…
I was honestly not worried where this pick was going to fall in the 2-6 range. I would love to see Beal or MKG, and I’m still not convinced one of them won’t be there, but is everyone really convinced that Beal or MKG is going to be that much better than Barnes or Drummond. I am fine with whoever the Cavs get at # 4 outside of Lamb. Unlike Drummond, he had the option of being on the ball all the time and still disappeared during basically every relevant game they played last year. I guess my basic point… Read more »
@AlexS- The 5th or the 6th would have definitely been worse. Unless Grant pulls of a great trade, or Washington/Charlotte biffs up badly, this is really really disastrous.
I like Barnes. We needed some shooting and Barnes is a great shooter. Another interesting idea was trading thompson for picks and drafting robinson. But I don’t know if I want to give up on Thompson yet.
I think it’s more important that the cavs focus on nailing their later round picks. The one thing that sets the cavs apart from the other teams in the lottery is the fact that they have a point guard in kyrie who will help whoever they choose first become better. If they hit on their later picks, kyrie should do the same for them.
As far as getting the fourth pick is concerned, it couldn’t have shook out worse for us. The one team that was most likely to take a shot at Drummond/Robinson at #3 just got the first pick and the two wing-depleted teams have the #2 and #3 picks. I’m terrified/pissed that we’re going to end up choosing between Drummond, Barnes, and Lamb. I’m not usually one prone to overreacting, but I think Grant seriously needs to consider moving up to #2 or #3 and package in at least one of the 2nd round picks with an expiring contract (Walton). If… Read more »
@Ben- “It’s not the failure that hurts, it’s the hope.” It’s also not a one man draft. Beal or MKG would have been huge for the Cavs. At 4, we are stuck with Barnes/Drummond/Trade down. It’s a huge missed oppurtunity.
Ditto buckeye. Cavs love Barnes. He’s a gym rat. Smart dude. Should fit in nicely. Irving and Barnes was the duo they were dying for last year. Blessing.
Kevin,
Good case scenario, yes
Best case scenario, no. It sounds as if that belongs, to Davis
To be honest Kevin, I have no problem with the Cavs pick or which players will be available, it’s just how people will act afterwards.
Please not Drummond. We don’t need another raw big who can’t shoot free throws. And he didn’t try hard in college.
In all seriousness, I hope they don’t take Drummond. Does anyone think that Jeremy Lamb would be a reach here?
And why is this a bad thing? During the season we all assumed the pick would be in the 6-8 range. Now we have 4 and it’s a tragedy? This is a one player draft. Everyone else is good but not outstanding. Did anyone really think David Stern was going to give us two #1 picks in a row?
How was tanking a failure…its better to have the #4 then the #8.
On that note, ITS DRUMMOND TIME BABY
TIME TO ROLL THE DICE, there are plenty of wings to be had in this and future drafts/free agency…there are not plenty C’s
On the bright side, Jordan has a pick above us and the bobcats have needs at every position, so anything could happen.
The fact remains that Davis is the only sure thing in this draft. I had hoped for Beal or MKG. Beal is still a possibility, but if we end up with Barnes its really not the end of the world. He could become Glen Rice.
They wont pick Robinson, he is redundant. My guess is Barnes or Drummond. Also worth noting everyone thought they had number 4 figured out last year and no one saw Thompson coming, so a “reach” pick would not be surprising
*jumps off bridge*
Ok, so clearly the next step is talking Rich Cho or Ernie Grunfeld into taking Thomas Robinson.
Cavs are gunna take Harrison Barnes because Beal and MKG wont last. Allow me to defend TT though, he struggled offensively, but showed some really awesome stuff with his peripherals. Dont sell him out quite yet.
We could have Done worse than Harrison barnes or drummond. When kendall marhsal was healthy barnes was a beat and the last time I checked we have a stud pg. And maybe someone takes Drummond or Robinson in the top three. We could’ve done a lot worse.
I’d take Robinson in a Heartbeat, and move TT. Maybe for big V…
So Cavs trade the #4 for the #8 and big V?
There is a good chance the Wiz take T-Rob at 3 if MKG goes at 2. But we’re screwed if Beal goes 2 cuz there is no way in hell MKG lasts past 3.
IT’S NOW OFFICIAL, TANKING WAS A FAILURE, PERIOD. I mean wasn’t that the whole reason for tanking was to get the first pick? No matter. Now it’s time to welcome (my guess) Bradey Beal or MKG to the Cavs, as well as for Colin to prep articles for next season mocking the Cavs to tank again just to show off his poor collection of tank pictures.
Breakfast,
Wait, isn’t Brad Beal or MKG a good case scenario?
Hope someone takesThomas Robinson in the top 3, so the Cavs can get Beal or MKG. But I would be happy if we get a guy like Harrison Barnes, PJ3 or even take a chance on Andre Drummond.
A possible positive note…in 2007, the Thunder hit a home run with Kevin Durant.
In 2008, they drafted Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka…at #4 and #24. The same picks that Cleveland will have this year.
History repeats itself?
YARGGGGGGH WHY DID WE WIN THE COIN FLIP.
Alright, now that that’s out of the way…we will get a very good wing player.
Hope the cavs reach for PJ3
Man if we had lost the coin flip we had get the nuber 1 pick, or not, problably not since they just give the number one pick to the hornets new owner.
