Cavs sign Michael Eric?
2012-08-10The Cavs have signed Michael Eric. Following Summer League, Cavs:the Blog briefly mentioned him here.
Last year at Temple, he was a really good rebounder and shot blocker. Â He is also 24 and was not remotely on anyone’s draft radar. Â I do not have a lot to say about this; hopefully he is the next Marcus Camby?
Maybe I have misunderstood some of the Cavs off-season moves, but I thought Kevin Jones received one year guaranteed, in addition to Jon Leuer being snagged off waivers. Â Luke Harangody signed a $1.1 million qualifying offer. Â Luke Walton spent most of his time at power forward last year, as the athletic ability to play on the wing eluded him some years ago.
So…the team has eight big men…only one of which is an accomplished NBA big…I guess, goodbye, slimmed-down Samardo Samuels? Â I am relatively confused.
It’s not really gaming but I like better the idea that we keep kicking around… to stock up on European league guys. Draft players to keep their rights but not limit ourselves to just 1 or 2. Last I heard (on here?) that Sasha Kaus is doing just well enough to get a nice contract in Russia that’s more than he’d get here. We know most will wash out but if we had 5-6 available, it only takes one rotation player to be worthwhile. p.s. Could the Cavs OWN a Euro team? Given the economy, one might be available, Why… Read more »
Interesting theory on the D-League. The only problem with the theory is that no one from the D-League gets any respect in the NBA. In fact, there are guys who played well in the olympics that never got sniffs from scouts who are now being recruited, leading to one GM’s conclusion: the D-League is NOT the way to make it to the NBA. Now if the Cavs can somehow game the system, great, but not with 8 big men.
Dave,
Thanks for the link. That could be a factor for the Cavs and makes their affiliation with the Charge even a better move. Once again Cavstheblog readers prove to be the place to go to find accurate information and good insights.
Checkmate Philly.
Jodie Meeks was a free agent I advocated for here. He started for back-to-back playoff teams in Philly, during which time he shot 38% from deep. He’s 24 years old and only signed for 2 years, $3 million, with the second year a team option. I am not sure how much of a discount he took to play for LA, but the ultimate moral of the story as it relates to the Cavs is that Alonzo Gee just needs to take his qualifying offer. Free agency has officially dried up.

The rule is in the article. You get to send up to 3 players to your affiliate that are cut from your training camp roster. Pretty sure Cavs did it with Tasmin Mitchell in 2010.
Dave,
Thanks for the insight on the potential meaning of the Micheal Eric signing. Maybe (hopefully?) the plan is to cut him, but get to keep him in Canton because of the sign / cut.
I wish Dave was right but as I understand things anyone that the Cavs cut who is not picked up by another NBA team will just be part of the NBADL draft and can be assigned anywhere. Please correct me if I am wrong. I’m thinking the extra players are around to replace anyone who wears their wet socks into the Cryon-X machine this year or is injured in some other fashion.
so sohuld we feel good? bad? indifferent? that we weren’t in the middle of the Dwight Howard 4-team trade???
I think that the Kevin Jones signing and this one are the Cavs attempt to try to circumvent the salary restrictions of the d-league. They gives these guys some guaranteed money so that they don’t take any overseas offers and a chance to make the team in training camp. More than likely Eric or Jones or both get cut in camp, but the Cavs would still hold their d-league rights. So they can then send them to Canton and try to develop them for the future. There is a slight problem in that other teams could call them up, but… Read more »
So, is Cleveland tanking already?
I am not sure why they would; obviously David Stern promised the #1 pick in 2013 to Orlando.
