Varejao: Center?
2012-10-28The Cavs have an interesting situation at hand with the addition of Tyler Zeller. Anderson Varejao has been playing center in recent years, but Zeller’s legitimacy and history at the 5 should move Andy back to the 4. Will he produce at the same level? Will he be better? A nice piece from Hoopsworld attempts to answer the questions surrounding this move. Here’s the link.
Agree with Ben. Tee-shirts are tagless these days. Kyrie, Rose and Westbrook are all combo guards.
What Ben said…
People need stop getting hung up on traditional positions. In general, the NBA has become a 3 position league. On ball, Swing, and Bigs. Andy, Zeller, and TT will all have “center” responsibilities at times depending on match-up. Leuer is really the only one of our 4 Bigs that couldn’t play as the lone big in a smallball lineup.
But it’s painful watching him try to box out and defend centers…between his slim frame and his short arms that make him play like 6’10”, he just couldn’t get to the boards in the time I watched him.
I honestly don’t think zeller is quick enough on either end of the floor to deal with today’s MBA power forwards. I don’t know about you, but Tyler zeller chasing Ryan Anderson out to the three point line sounds like a distaster to. Me
Andy’s bigger and longer than Zeller, and is by far better at rebounding and defending the paint. Plus, Zeller’s offensive game is, to me, more reminiscent of a Chris Bosh-type power forward than a center. I’ll probably be in the minority on this, but I think if anything Zeller should transition to PF and let Andy play center.
