Kyrie Irving or Stephen Curry?
2012-11-07The Cleveland Cavaliers will be facing the Golden State Warriors tonight, at 10:30 PM. That’s a little late for us Midwesterners, but the point guard match up is tantalizing enough to keep this Cavs fan (point thumbs at self) awake. Any GM worth his salt in the NBA would tell you he’d rather have Kyrie Irving than Stephen Curry, but they are remarkably similar in style of play. Both are scoring point guards with exquisite jump shots. Kyrie’s better at getting to the rim (around 3.3 attempts per game in his rookie season), but Curry is one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA, hovering around 44% from deep during his career so far. Both point guards are a sieve on defense, with the only notable argument for Irving being that Curry has been playing terrible defense for several years now, and Kyrie is an NBA sophomore. Also, Curry’s ankle hasn’t ever held up for an entire season, and his entire career thus far has been marred by injury trouble. Anyways, here’s Kyrie’s stats, and here’s Curry’s. Make of them what you will, and let me know what you think of the match up and the game overall in the comments below.
Colin,
Do you have a twitter?
I’d like to follow it. Also, I live in Chicago too. Do you hate Bulls fans too? I hope so.
Well, Karl Landry too, Dani.
Nate- I made that call right after a few ugly turnovers from Alonzo. As for Chris, Curry has missed a significant chunk of every season so far. Kyrie’s extended absence at the end of last season was almost certainly tanking-related. I honestly have to think that Casspi and Byron have some sort of beef at this point- what does Casspi have to do to get a few minutes backing up an ice cold CJ Miles? By the way, I think we win this game with Andy. David Lee really went off; he won that game.
Dion’s worst game so far as a pro. Still got into double-figures and made some really nice passes but for the first time he let his shooting woes get him down and shake his confidence.
Man, am I eating crow on the Miles signing. Sheesh!
TT played hard and pretty well. Leuer got better as the game went on but man, his foot speed is ummm…not good. Landry made him his concubine…
Well look who won? Too much hype for Irving. At least Curry played every game the first season. Irving couldn’t even do that so who are you to say he’s not injury prone? Especially for someone who didn’t even play any meaningful minutes for Duke.
He didn’t even guard Curry the entire game. When he did he got absolutely torched the first quarter. It’s alot easier to get your offense going when you have someone guard the other teams best player while you just worry about offense.
How annoyed do you think Casspi is every time that CJ Miles bricks a shot?
Dear God Jon Leuer cannot play defense or rebound.
Really Dani? 3G has had some nice plays off the dribble tonight, including one really nice crossover into an and1.
Jonas Valanciunas tonight: 4 points, 2 boards. WHATTA stud
Yeah, I have to agree. But I don’t like how Kyrie’s been playing tonight at all. he let Curry go off in the first quarter, including an easy layup or two.
Curry was older when he came in the league than Kyrie now, and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft has already put together a season which seems at least as good as any the 24 year old 4 year NBA veteran has produced. Curry is very good, but the comparison shows that Irving needs to be discussed in seriously rarefied air.
Byron Scott has to be smarter with this stuff. Don’t but in the subs when the Cavs are down 18, it is asking for trouble. Give Kyrie a shot to come out of the funk.
I’m loving this Cavs team. And by the way, Kyrie is a LOT better than Curry at everything other than spot-up shooting. Wildly better at everything else, the midrange J.
i have to agree. He can’t dribble at all.
Alonzo should NEVER put the ball on the floor.
